Interestingly; here in Maine, life seems to be going on as usual.?
Last summer it was DEADSVILLE! hardly any out of state cars..... Now I am seeing a lot from Tenn, Utah, Minn. along with the closer n eastern states.....( maybe there here to evangelize us?)
There is a new restaurant in Eastport, the eastern tip of the state along the St Croix River, & a 30 min. ride down to the tip of the pennensula.
They seat 80, and are doing a 150 head turn-over every day.? Carpenters & builders notso hotso but commercial artists doing well.

Yeppers support your local community. We really have to rebuild from the community level up so all can prosper. Root out the fetid racism that permeates still in places such as the Valley Swim Club.

I've been seeing lots of Western States license plates, WA, OR, AZ, UT, NV, NM, CO and the occasional TX or LA. Our town is all of about two blocks, 3 blocks if you count the lumber yard, one stop sign no signals. The entrance to Henry Cowell State Park (which Arnie is closing down) is the source of a lot of our tourist traffic and our town is supported by tourism. It was originally a lumber hub with the San Lorenzo River and railroad to move the giant trees to become fence stakes. Very artsy area, eclectic, Al Capone had a hideout in these mountains fancy that. It's like living in a fairy grotto with small waterfalls and a myriad of springs, creeks and rivers lined with ferns, orchids, belladonna all of which are dwarfed by the redwoods. Every time I have to cool my jets behind a tourist crawling along Hwy 9 10mph under the speed limit I tell them to spend some money in our town! We have an all volunteer fire department, 2 sheriffs and 2 state patrol guys that's it. Course just about every house has a dog or three, gun owners and is right there to help out in times of disaster and boy howdy we've seen them. I shudder hearing El Nino is back even though I know we badly need the rains to refill the depleted reservoirs. Course then the levee system could and is aching to, collapse around the Sacramento area which would then pollute the California Aqueduct and there goes the southern half of the state. Not like these aren't shovel ready projects eh?

People here are good with what Obama is trying to do. Completely had it with Arnie who just doesn't get it and we are headed for a state constitutional convention. We have to fix the state government so that it can function and not be held hostage by a small Republican minority which serves their corporate and uber riche constituents.

* Robert McNamara — gone but not forgotten

Us old hippie types came face to face with a familiar name this week; just one more of the steady stream of those passing into the Great Beyond. But this one provoked a heart-heavy remembrance. Many MANY of us appear to be hoping he’ll need sunscreen where he’s going, if not full gear to protect from karmic napalm. Robert McNamara — a man as fully hated as Rumsfeld, and one order of magnitude beyond — has gone to meet his Maker. He died in Wash DC Mon at the age of 93.

What did McNamara do to earn so much strong feeling? Sec of Defense to JFK, he was inherited by LBJ and played war architect to the Vietnam debacle, much as Eichmann played accountant and manager to Hitler’s final solution; cut and dried, numbers and charts, records and dispassionate statistics. The business-as-usual accounting he put forth to the nation was met with counterpoint by REAL … yes, we had actual reporting then … footage coming out of ‘Nam of wounded soldiers and burnt children. This, every night on the nightly news. Body counts in the 100s every week. Astonishing that it went on so long.

Mr. M showed no heart until much much later in his life; and even then, he couldn’t quite apologize for all he’d orchestrated — altho he clearly saw in retrospect how badly he’d fumbled it all. By some reports, he left LBJ’s adm when it became apparent how badly he’d botched; by others, he was asked to leave. His legacy is the ‘business’ of war; his very name a cautionary tale.

McNamara devoted his later years to heading the World Bank, focusing on poverty and assuaging his conscience. I don’t believe in Hell but if what weighs heavily on our soul continues with us until we can sort it through, Mr. M has plenty of sorting ahead of him — and millions of brutal deaths as companion. He was the Godfather of our current military industrial complex and responsible for recreating the American fighting force to become what it is today; a crackerjack and world-dominant killing machine. Systems analysis was Mr. M’s game — now its ours. Over 58,000 of our soldiers and nurses died in Vietnam; over a quarter of a million were wounded; close to 2000 were MIA. Estimates for Vietnamese casualties range to over two million, and the Vietnam War is what led to the killing fields of Cambodia. If its true that we must feel, actually feel, the impact of our activity on earth through the events of those who suffered them before we can move on, Robert McNamara has a very long and painful life review ahead.

Essentially, this was one of the most pitiful humans on the planet; he knew what he did, and he regretted it — read his own thoughts in the Hullabaloo article below. He wrote a number of books on the topic, and consented to an extraordinary interview in a film called The Fog of War, all trying to get a grip on it; maybe he’s got one now.

Well Morgana, as best as I am able to track these days this is a very very good article with your usual richness of expression as you paint pictures for us of what is going on.

I've missed everyone and felt as if I had hit "the door of no return" for awhile. I am getting stronger though I believe, my first Chemo appointment is Monday so we will see. I do hit the wall very fast in a day, exhaustion just overwhelms me.

I want to thank everyone for their constant positive energy and prayers and am asking that you keep them up, I badly need those prayers and strong energy you put out and know that I am sending it all back to you. The journey isn't so long, it's actually only one day at a time.

Please everyone, look at the web home pages of both the NYTimes + Washington Post today. The Times front page has an article saying that Att. Gen. Holder is "now leaning toward criminal investigations of the Bush/Cheney torture regimes" even though Obama is supposedly against it.

The W.P. on its front page says that "Cheney was directly responsible by his orders" for keeping the secret (and illegal!) CIA foreign assassination program concealed from Congress.

Perhaps the mood is changing, as people have (hopefully) finally had it up to here with allowing these war criminals to run around giving speeches and blithely enjoying their blood soaked wealth. We shall see, but I'm more hopeful after reading Sally's prediction for September!

Thinking off all of us here on this site- S and I and my sister, B are becoming part of a community here in this neighborhood we moved to about two years ago-this started by talking to people on our walking routes. We talked about gardening-last year we had tomatoes and this year we have zucchini and sage, some of our neighbors are native habitat folk and we are learning about what used to be here although I am a little troubled by this movement since it reminds me a little of anti-immigrant. I mean we are told that fennel is foreign- oh well so am I. I have just learned how to grow potatoes in a modified container this is so thrilling to me. At any rate I believe that in our own personal lives we are seeing the move toward small and homemade and our friends and ourselves are highly educated, older people turning away from the madcap run away train of our society and back to what is eternal. My grandchildren are fascinated even though to them this is what old folks do.

I have pondered this..............and arrived at this theory: adolescents, 10 - 14, ( being a difficult time to begin with ) were more traumatized by the assasignation of JFK, than other demigraphic groups.as a collective they decided to "look out for # 1". The Kent state shootings confirmed the correctness of that decision. Many of them have early retired up here to flip old houses for a profit or open a little shop..................... Speculations, based upon guesses, assumptions or the outcome one would love to see, skew reality around wayward turns like a train out of control, racing down precarious mountain track. For instance, consider the astrological “predictions” that John McCain would now be Pres of the US - hey prognosticators, no fair using the Saturn-Uranus opp as a wild card out. Since you already knew of this effect, it should have been factored in your call. There was a magnificent rainbow over the Town of Milbridge just now! It spanned across the bay from one end of Main St to the other, makea a U around the end of the bay!
Actually there was also a partial double rainbow!
People were standing looking up at it in awe!

Our Mod. Rep. Senators, are sending regular weekly e-mail newsletters, detailing how the stimulus money is being spent here on new jobs in developing tidal & wind power, as well as the expansion of the port facilities in Eastport.
The natural deep water lends itself well to being a major shipping destination, once docks are expanded to receive goods.........And the rest of the money is being used to improve the highways leading away from the port!
So they have put together a pragmatic, instant job creating, reducing the future cost of goods.
Former Gov King was pushing an East West highway,
but current Gov Baldacci is behind the port effort.
Historically Eastport, is where FDR was brought from their summer home across the bay on Campobello Island, to take a train to DC when he was stricken with polio.Next step: restore train service throughout the state. We have none! I miss the sound of trains!

Sally and I chatted about Doug Coe and this bunch last night. She talked about wanting to read the book by Jeff Sharlet, the book is called "The Family: The Secret Fundamentalism at the Heart of American Power". Rachel Maddow has had him on a couple of times this week. I wonder if we can find a founding date for them, that would be an interesting chart.

Over these two decades, Radvany's interest in gardening has evolved from casual to consuming, fueled by a strong belief in the healing power of gardens. It's a subject she often discusses at garden clubs on behalf of the Penn State Cooperative Extension in Montgomery County.

"Gardening isn't just a fun activity," Radvany says. "It's good for you from physical, mental, and healing perspectives, too. It's a great stress-reliever."

Gardeners know this intuitively, and so do many cultures going back millennia. But it's also science.

Studies show that being in a garden, looking at some natural scene, or even viewing a botanical mural can lower blood pressure and ease levels of fear, stress, and anger.

Wow Frank Rich was spot on. I always enjoy his hit pieces on the GOP. I channel hopped every time a Republican questioned Sonia Sotomayor they came off so badly hammering 'Wise Latina' which she proved she was a 'Wise Latina' to everyone but these buffoons. The muckety mucks are digging themselves deeper into the ooze they've created. There are times when i just cannot bring myself to listen to, or read any more "News" since more than half of it is propoganda, or skewed in some way. Most defies logic.

This past spring i picked up an older book by Anya Seton from the library book sale. I've no idea why this author has escaped my attention over the years. It felt as though she had channeled the characters she wrote about. This particular book -- Katherine -- was the result of her careful historical research. I'm guessing her other books fit into the historical novel category as well. Is anyone familiar with her?

Somewhere someone wrote that much would be revealed that people would rise and others fall. Reading what is coming out regarding "The Family"and their friends is clearing up some points of understanding for me.
I was raised christian and converted to Roman Catholism. I love the Virgin Mary, Dorothy Day. The Catholic Worker, Father Bill,Sister Prejean and I could go on- my point being that I have been so confused by the ugliness coming forth as Christianity-I think we will now see that this "Christianity" is the work of fascists. I imagine that these men ,who suggest, by the way, that a woman who desires sexual fulfillment is possessed by Satan, are starting to feel "the heat" and that "heat" will only increase now until we can all see.
I have renounced christianity during this time of the fascists. I am grateful that the literal facts are coming out.

It's cool in Maine too. Not one night much over 60o most closer to 50o I have a window box of baby tomato & papper plants, that haven't even gone out yet.
My garden is a complete disaster...........seeds haven't even sprouted....( planted by the moon cycles & NOT, planted early or late.....from different seed sources.....) Yet the wild flowers are booming....? Did the nutrients all erode down the hill with the massive volume of melting snow?
I am going on total faith that I will eat next winter!
