Sally re her ascendant, I thought she would have her substantial taurus/scopio placements in the 5th/11th house axis from one side or another ie., cancer or capricorn asc saw those taurus planets and asteriods as her 5 boys 5th house or 11th. (tho most people don't have it spelled out like that in a house, i've seen it a number of times).

RS: Since I've been home, I still constantly monitor the news from Afghanistan and Iraq. Everyday I get the casualty lists. The thing that's startling is that they're masking the casualties, the cost of the war in Afghanistan. Iraq is bad enough, but Afghanistan — that was supposed to be the shining jewel of the war on terror. We went in kicked out the bad guys and set up a democracy and everything's gonna be fine now.

RS: It's a public relations tactic. A news cycle lasts 48 to 72 hours. Say Johnny Smith from New Haven, Conn., is in Kunar Province where his American infantry battalion is operating. He's in a fight with local insurgents — not Osama bin Laden, maybe some foreign fighters, but mostly local. Johnny Smith dies in combat. Within 24 hours there's a news release that comes out of this island we call Kabul that says a coalition soldier was killed in Afghanistan today. We're not going to give out his name because we're going to say, "The next of kin have to be notified." We're not going to give out his nationality because we're all part of this quote "coalition."

But here's the sad fact: 99.99 % of coalition forces in Kunar are in fact American. So now in the news — NBC news, national news, wire services — the only thing that's released is that a "coalition" soldier was killed in Afghanistan today.

And 72 hours later when the DOD finally releases Private Johnny Smith's name, the New Haven Register and Channel 8 will pick up the memorial service and how sad Johnny's family is. But in San Francisco, they never hear about it. In Minnesota, they never hear about it. In Florida, they never hear about it. It's a very clever public affairs strategy. Now we have NATO in Afghanistan, so it's, "A NATO soldier died."

Just some free floating thoughts about this whole mess Bush is on a supreme power trip with his 'wait until next week until my announcement'. It gives him such a feeling of total power to have everyone speculating and worrying about HIS plans. I worked for a man - for an extremely short time - that is a lot like Bush. Power trips and the feeling of being a god to those around and under him are food for his ego. Cruelty is very strong in their makeup as well. They enjoy watching people suffer because of their actions even though they would deny it to their dying day.

Karen, couldn't agree more about the collective extremes...esp with bush choosing Negroponte wanted the biggest baddest thug he could find to take it all to the limit and hack down as much of our country as possible. Until, of course, they are stopped. Impeachment will stop them. Voila.

I think Nancy Pelosi (and Leahy) will pay a huge personal price for this venture back to sanity through most of this year. They may not (especially Nancy) see much of their families who may not adapt too well to the long haul ahead.

I don't know if we've forgotten the The Six Solfeggio Frequencies but for a lot of people they seem interesting but we as a collective have not resonated beyond 3 although I see very strong signs of moving toward 4, at least closer than I remember. We are at the crossroads with this and could go either way. You would love the book "The Cosmos and Psyche" it's excellent written by Richard Tarnas, he also wrote "The Passions of the Western Mind." Tarnas books are a heavy but excellent read. Particularly if you love history,
theoretical cosmology, physics, and quantum gravity, you will love "Cosmos and Psyche" The book is fabulous right along with Hawkings "A Brief History of Time"

You're right Charles a VOC and critical degrees do not preclude effectiveness, but they do hinder "effectiveness" that the person believes will happen, or even in this case the country. With critical degrees and VOC moons, life takes different twists that may or may not bring one to a better place but it will not be a smooth trajectory and accomplishments end up very different than what one thought. A good example would be a collage student studying Engineering for 4 years and decides that's not what they want to do only to return to school for Coaching experience.

The American people demonstrated in the November elections that they do not believe your current Iraq policy will lead to success and that we need a change in direction for the sake of our troops and the Iraqi people. We understand that you are completing your post-election consultations on Iraq and are preparing to make a major address on your Iraq strategy to the American people next week.

Clearly this address presents you with another opportunity to make a long overdue course correction. Despite the fact that our troops have been pushed to the breaking point and, in many cases, have already served multiple tours in Iraq, news reports suggest that you believe the solution to the civil war in Iraq is to require additional sacrifices from our troops and are therefore prepared to proceed with a substantial U.S. troop increase.

Surging forces is a strategy that you have already tried and that has already failed. Like many current and former military leaders, we believe that trying again would be a serious mistake. They, like us, believe there is no purely military solution in Iraq. There is only a political solution. Adding more combat troops will only endanger more Americans and stretch our military to the breaking point for no strategic gain. And it would undermine our efforts to get the Iraqis to take responsibility for their own future. We are well past the point of more troops for Iraq.

In a recent appearance before the Senate Armed Services Committee, General John Abizaid, our top commander for Iraq and the region, said the following when asked about whether he thought more troops would contribute to our chances for success in Iraq:

"I met with every divisional commander, General Casey, the Corps commander, General Dempsey. We all talked together. And I said, in your professional opinion, if we were to bring in more American troops now, does it add considerably to our ability to achieve success in Iraq? And they all said no. And the reason is, because we want the Iraqis to do more. It's easy for the Iraqis to rely upon to us do this work. I believe that more American forces prevent the Iraqis from doing more, from taking more responsibility for their own future. "

Rather than deploy additional forces to Iraq, we believe the way forward is to begin t he phased redeployment of our forces in the next four to six months, while shifting the principal mission of our forces there from combat to training, logistics, force protection and counter-terror. A renewed diplomatic strategy, both within the region and beyond, is also required to help the Iraqis agree to a sustainable political settlement. In short, it is time to begin to move our forces out of Iraq and make the Iraqi political leadership aware that our commitment is not open ended, that we cannot resolve their sectarian problems, and that only they can find the political resolution required to stabilize Iraq.

Our troops and the American people have already sacrificed a great deal for the future of Iraq. After nearly four years of combat, tens of thousands of U.S. casualties, and over $300 billion dollars, it is time to bring the war to a close. We, therefore, strongly encourage you to reject any plans that call for our getting our troops any deeper into Iraq. We want to do everything we can to help Iraq succeed in the future but, like many of our senior military leaders, we do not believe that adding more U.S. combat troops contributes to success.

As the new Congress convenes today and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi ascends to the rostrum, you have to wish them all well. These are the kids who got up in school assembly and spoke on Armistice Day and were captains of teams and organized class projects to do good works, a different breed from us wise guys who lurked in the halls and made fun of them, and in the end you want them and not us running your government. Yes, they had serious brown-nose tendencies and a knack for mouthing pieties, but you could count on them to do what needed doing. They were leaders. They weren't going to swipe the lunch money and buy a keg of suds.
You wonder, however, what this earnest bunch can do when things are so far out of whack as they are in Iraq. The gangland-style execution of Saddam Hussein was visible reality, a token of the bloodlust and violence that swirl around Iraq, where our forces are mired, sitting targets, aliens, fighting a colonial war in behalf of a Shiite majority that is as despotic and cruel as what came before, except messier.

Humane Society shelter to remain open during remodel
The large-scale project is set to begin later this month at the no-kill facility in Huntington Beach.

HUNTINGTON BEACH - The Orange County Humane Society animal shelter is not closing.

A shelter remodel is scheduled to begin later this month, said Dr. Samir Botros.

Botros responded today to rumors swirling around Surf City that his animal shelter was being shut down next week and that the animals not adopted would be euthanized.

"I don't think we'll even turn away any animals" during construction, said Botros, who noted that he runs a no-kill facility.

The shelter, which has been open on Newland Avenue for about 28 years, and the adjacent AAA Animal Hospital are scheduled to begin a massive remodel in upcoming weeks, said Botros, who owns both businesses.

The shelter will remain open during construction, but its capacity will be slashed to about 60 percent or 70 percent. There are now up to 64 cages for dogs at the shelter and a large room to accommodate cats, Botros said.

Shelter officials already have signed contracts with other area shelters and rescue groups to take animals that can't be accommodated during the remodel, which should take six to eight months, Botros said.

The shelter is funded with proceeds from animal control contracts with Costa Mesa and Westminster, medical bills from the clinic and money from animal adoptions. Occasionally it receives private donations.

The shelter will be able to maintain its contracts with Westminster and Costa Mesa during the remodeling, Botros said.
He also said he believes the facility won't have to turn away pets given up by their owners.

“We have legislative jurisdiction over [the Freedom of Information Act] and some of the other issues that relate to openness in government,” Waxman said yesterday.

I spent 42 years in HB and neighboring cities, got most of my pets from that very SPCA so whew is right. Early this year the Bush administration is to ask Congress to approve an additional $100bn for the onerous task of making life intolerable for the Iraqis. This will bring the total spent on the White House's current obsession with war to almost $500bn - enough to have given every US citizen $1,600 each. I wonder which the voters would have gone for if given the choice: shall we (a) give every American $1,600 or (b) spend the money on bombing a country in the Middle East that doesn't use lavatory paper?
Of course, there's another thing that George Bush could have done with the money: he could have given every Iraqi $18,700. I imagine that would have reduced the threat of international terrorism somewhat. Call me old-fashioned, but I can't help thinking that giving someone $18,700 brings them round to your side more quickly than bombing the hell out of them. They could certainly buy a lot of lavatory paper with it.

In 2002 the house budget committee and the congressional budget office both guesstimated the cost of invading Iraq at approximately $50bn; $500bn seems a bit wide of the mark. What's more, with over half a million dead, it means that the world's greatest military superpower has spent a million dollars for every Iraqi killed. That can't be value for money!

Boise State University has moved former Vice President Al Gore's speech to the Taco Bell Arena after about 1,500 tickets for the event, formerly planned for a ballroom in the student center, were sold or given away in 10 minutes.
The speech, the keynote to a conference sponsored by BSU's Frank Church Institute, is titled, "Global Warming: Beyond the Inconvenient Truth." It's scheduled for 7 p.m. Jan. 22.

Tickets were gone almost immediately when they became available Wednesday, the university said. Seven hundred free tickets were given away, and about 500 more tickets were sold at various prices, said Garry Wenske, executive director of the Frank Church Institute.

Wenske and other BSU officials said disappointed Idahoans flooded their offices with calls Wednesday morning after the tickets were given out and sold.

Unfortuanately also, one of my best friends lost her mom on 21 Dec, and a woman I really really liked alot died on 31 Dec (she was one of the founders of the Center for Attitudinal Healing - Gerry Jampowlski the other founder- in Marin, CA).

My mother is dying....I got some angelic flower essences from my friend Patricia (http://www.patsgarden.com) and spent about 5 hrs yesterday giving them to her at the nursing home. She is on a morphine patch, in lots of pain. Not fair for someone to reach almost 98 and be in pain. She has not eaten in 10 days....yet this morning, I called, and she had eaten all her breakfast. This doesn't mean she will recover, but apparently, it has happened before, specifically to a 108 yr old Italian lady at the home who went thru the same thing. I am going down to continue the essences....but she might have just been at the effect, as I and so many others have been, of this energy shift...

What I find interesting is that I've spent the last few weeks looking for some sort of answers....and all I could see, repeatedly, was an enormous void....and the mass of stars swirling in the middle....nothing there, just this void....

Last year, a friend told me about his Mother. She was in the hospital,so close to death, bodily systems shutting down, that his Father sold her car ( he didn't see well enough to drive it) winter coat etc. When she recovered and came home, she was some peeved with him for doing that, but I guess he needed the money! My friend is dtill going to Fla. to visit both parents 5 or 6 years later!

Wesley Clark, the former Nato commander who led the 1999 war in Kosovo, is urging President George Bush not to send more troops to Iraq, saying the "surge" in forces being considered by the White House would be too little, too late and could only deepen the hole that the United States and its allies have dug themselves.

Writing exclusively in The Independent on Sunday, General Clark said the time for a military solution was long past, that US troops lack the skills and the political legitimacy to pacify the conflict-ridden regions, and that the only way forward was a political initiative encompassing the entire region.

"We've never had enough troops in Iraq," writes General Clark, who was the Supreme Allied Commander of Nato forces from 1997-2000. "In Kosovo, we had 40,000 troops for a population of two million. For Iraq, that ratio would call for at least 500,000 troops so adding 20,000 now is too little, too late."

"What the surge would do is put more American troops in harm's way, further undercut US forces' morale, and risk further alienation of elements of the Iraqi populace," he added.

The Timely Death of Gerald Ford

THE very strange and very long Gerald Ford funeral marathon was about many things, but Gerald Ford wasn’t always paramount among them.

Forty percent of today’s American population was not alive during the Ford presidency. The remaining 60 percent probably spent less time recollecting his unelected 29-month term than they did James Brown’s “Papa’s Got a Brand New Bag.” Despite the lachrymose logorrhea of television anchors and the somber musical fanfares, the country was less likely to be found in deep mourning than in deep football. It’s a safe bet that the Ford funeral attracted far fewer viewers than the most consequential death video of the New Year’s weekend, the lynching of Saddam Hussein. But those two deaths were inextricably related: it was in tandem that they created a funereal mood that left us mourning for our own historical moment more than for Mr. Ford.

What the Ford obsequies were most about was the Beltway establishment’s grim verdict on George W. Bush and his war in Iraq. Every Ford attribute, big and small, was trotted out by Washington eulogists with a wink, as an implicit rebuke of the White House’s current occupant. Mr. Ford was a healer, not a partisan divider. He was an all-American football star, not a cheerleader. He didn’t fritter away time on pranks at his college fraternity, Delta Kappa Epsilon, because he had to work his way through school as a dishwasher. He was in the top third of his class at Yale Law. He fought his way into dangerous combat service during World War II rather than accept his cushy original posting. He was pals with reporters and Democrats. He encouraged dissent in his inner circle. He had no enemies, no ego, no agenda, no ideology, no concern for his image. He described himself as “a Ford, not a Lincoln,” rather than likening himself to, say, Truman.

We're going to look into that more carefully. Only a small part of the money spent in Iraq has been audited, but what we've seen is very, very frightening.

And that's not only a problem in Iraq. When we look at the spending on homeland security, when we look at the spending on Hurricane Katrina, we see the same pattern of hiring big contractors, having them overcharge for the work they do. We've got to be the watchdog for the taxpayers.'

Waxman is the 'watchdog' to the businessman and he seems set to Unmask the masquerade that Neptune has allowed to be covered up for so many years... fingers crossed!!

Pentagon to Global Cities -- Drop Dead

In our world, the Pentagon and the national security bureaucracy have largely taken possession of the future. In an exchange in 2002, journalist Ron Suskind reported a senior adviser to President Bush telling him:

"that guys like me were ‘in what we call the reality-based community,' which he defined as people who ‘believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality.' I nodded and murmured something about enlightenment principles and empiricism. He cut me off. ‘That's not the way the world really works anymore,' he continued. ‘We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality… We're history's actors . . . and you, all of you, will be left to just study what we do.'" Slowly, step by step, the present White House has found itself forced back into at least the vicinity of the reality-based community. This week we may, in fact, get to hear one of the last of this President's great Iraqi fictions.
The same cannot be said of the Pentagon and the Intelligence Community (IC). They have settled into the future and taken it in hand in a business-like, if somewhat lurid, way. It's the Pentagon that, in 2004, was already producing futuristic studies about a globally warmed world from Hell; it's the Pentagon's blue-skies research agency, DARPA, that regularly lets scientists and other thinkers loose to dream wildly about future possibilities (and then, of course, to create war-fighting weaponry and other equipment from those dreams). It's the National Nuclear Security Administration that is hard at work dreaming up the nature of our nuclear arsenal in 2030.

Typical is the National Intelligence Council, a "center of strategic thinking within the U.S. Government, reporting to the Director of Central Intelligence." In 2005, it was already expending much effort to create fictional scenarios for 2010, 2015, and 2020. Someone I know recently attended workshops the Council's long-range assessment unit organized, trying to look at the "threats after next" -- and this time they were deep into the 2020s.

Universal health care, much as we need it, won't happen until there's a change of management in the White House. In the meantime, however, Congress can take an important step toward making our health care system less wasteful, by fixing the Medicare Middleman Multiplication Act of 2003.

Officially, of course, it was the Medicare Modernization Act. But as we learned during the debate over Social Security, in Bushspeak "modernize" is a synonym for "privatize." And one of the main features of the legislation was an effort to bring private-sector fragmentation and inefficiency to one of America's most important public programs.

The process actually started in the 1990s, when Medicare began allowing recipients to replace traditional Medicare - in which the government pays doctors and hospitals - with private managed-care plans, in which the government pays a fee to an H.M.O. The magic of the marketplace was supposed to cut Medicare's costs.

The plan backfired. H.M.O.'s received fees reflecting the medical costs of the average Medicare recipient, but to maximize profits they selectively enrolled only healthier seniors, leaving sicker, more expensive people in traditional Medicare. Once Medicare became aware of this cream-skimming and started adjusting payments to reflect beneficiaries' health, the H.M.O.'s began dropping out: their extra layer of bureaucracy meant that they had higher costs than traditional Medicare and couldn't compete on a financially fair basis.

That should have been the end of the story. But for the Bush administration and its Congressional allies, privatization isn't a way to deliver better government services - it's an end in itself. So the 2003 legislation increased payments to Medicare-supported H.M.O.'s, which were renamed Medicare Advantage plans. These plans are now heavily subsidized.

According to the Medicare Payment Advisory Commission, an independent federal body that advises Congress on Medicare issues, Medicare Advantage now costs 11 percent more per beneficiary than traditional Medicare. According to the Commonwealth Fund, which has a similar estimate of the excess cost, the subsidy to private H.M.O.'s cost Medicare $5.4 billion in 2005.

Yes! Back in the day( 1980) when I had a stock broker; he advised me to buy oil stock (Mea culpa, I was politically asleep then) and gave me a list of companies. Pat C, that is indeed a disturbing article. But I like how the author points out that the U.S./Pentagon can only ever seem to gear itself up to bully smaller and supposedly weaker nations. I'm not at all certain as to how this will play out. I have had a recurring vision for a couple of years now, of a town with streets empty of vehicle traffic during what would normally be a busy high noon on a hazy day. Empty, because no one can drive, because gas is simply too expensive... Somewhere above $9.00 per gallon. I was walking around, and there was this weird Uranian/electric feeling about it all, yet people weren't rioting. Everything was unusually calm. Time-wise, it seemed to be after 2008.

I don't know what it means, but I'm hoping that maybe it suggests a wake-up call that people respond to in a non-violent way.

One side of the house where I live is a busy 1-way street for a neighborhood. Sometimes, I just gaze out the window to watch... lossa accidents at this particular corner when folks try to creep out of the side street. I've noted the cars/trucks becoming smaller as gas goes up...pretty quickly, too. There they go... one driver to a vehicle... thousands & thousands of them. Multiple by the countless (almost) towns & cities across the nation. One driver to a vehicle... slurp, guzzle, gobble... gobble, guzzle, slurp. There are so many other ways to get around even aside from taxies & buses. Freakin' walk for starters! Bike, skate, a group maintained auto for special occasions. That insane bidness of "commuting" to one's job is not even for the birds.

I really despise this darkside cancerian country's nasty habits of swaggering greed & patho-selfishness for MY freakin' "clan" or MY family, MY whiney tantrum binges whenever another country calls MY on its crap. Those of us babe-booms with uranus in cancer really are some of the worst... my this, my that, my everything I see or hear about, my my my mine mine me me me me me my mine Note the internet titles for different bits... my photos, my bills, my my my my my my...

I'm sure it's a similar story everywhere. Maybe its up to us in the Pluto in Virgo and Libra crowds to show them the way?

Macintosh's don't get viruses..my tech friend at the middle school with 300 Macs in his care doesn't even use anti-viral software.The summer I was a VISTA, the entire 3 story social services agency where I had an office, was taken down with a virus. I printed out on e-mail messages (to my Mac at home) from headquarters in Augusta, to my supervisor, for about 6 weeks while they rebuilt their system! I had also received the guilty e-mail message on my Mac but it wasn't affected!

I work in this field and have been commenting continually this past year that it seems to me that the program (Medicare part D) was purposely made confusing and the stingy programs offered through the Medicare Advantage system are a joke. Gas-Like Odor Permeates Parts of New York City
Authorities were investigating widespread reports today of a strong odor that many described as similar to natural gas, permeating parts of New York City and nearby areas of New Jersey during the morning commute. In some buildings, office workers were evacuated and subway and train lines affected, but the mysterious smell did not appear to be harmful.

New York City agencies and the United States Coast Guard responded to numerous calls on emergency telephone lines. Fire trucks raced around in search of the odor.

The company had been working with the Army since 2003 on a plan to ship wastewater from neutralized VX nerve agent from a chemical weapons depot in Indiana to Deepwater, N.J., to be treated at DuPont's Chamber Works facility and then dumped in the Delaware River.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention had signed off on the idea, but environmentalists had fought it, and regulatory approval by New Jersey officials was uncertain, said Nick Fanandakis, DuPont vice president and general manager for chemical solutions.

Artists always tend towards the Macs, because they are easy to use and intuitive. You did a wonderful job explaining why.

Unfortunately, programs like the one Sally uses for her astro biz can't be run on Macs older than this past year, unless they are the new dual core Macs which have the Intel chip which allows PC programs to be run on them.

I had a big tower Mac G4 for 6 years, and then I bought the little mini Mac, which is about 6.5 inches square and 2.5 inches high....they are great, and you can buy the dual core ones also, and run your PC programs.

Steve Jobs was born 2/24/1955....amazing guy, but he has got to have a lot of Aries energy, he has the temper of one!

The twist of the VOC was played out somewhat also. She had all these kids around her and kind of let each hold the gavel handle. She then laid it down, but one kid may have been grandkid-don't know-picked it up to do a bit of gaveling in the house himself. According to U.S. maritime industry sources, tanker captains are reporting an increase in onboard alarms from hazard sensors designed to detect hydrocarbon gas leaks and, specifically, methane leaks. However, the leaks are not emanating from cargo holds or pump rooms but from continental shelves venting increasing amounts of trapped methane into the atmosphere. With rising ocean temperatures, methane is increasingly escaping from deep ocean floors. Methane is also 21 more times capable of trapping heat in the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.

In fact, one of the major sources for increased methane venting is the Hudson Submarine Canyon, which extends 400 miles into the Atlantic from the New York-New Jersey harbor. Another location experiencing increased venting is the Santa Barbara Channel on the California coast.
Meanwhile, a strong natural gas odor was reported this morning in Manhattan, Brooklyn, Jersey City, Weehawken, and Newark. The strong odor was also detected in Union City, Secaucus, and Hoboken. Last August, a similar unexplained gas odor sent people to the hospital in Staten Island and Queens. Although methane is odorless, natural methane venting is often accompanied by the venting of acrid hydrogen sulfide, a byproduct of bacterial decomposition more...................

The spark that could set it ablaze may be lying in the hands of an Islamic terrorist cell, in the hands of the ideological twins of the Christian Right. Another catastrophic terrorist attack could be our Reichstag fire, the excuse used to begin the accelerated dismantling of our open society. The ideology of the Christian Right is not one of love and compassion, the central theme of Christ's message, but of violence and hatred. It has a strong appeal to many in our society, but it is also aided by our complacency. Let us not stand at the open city gates waiting passively and meekly for the barbarians. They are coming. They are slouching rudely towards Bethlehem. Let us, if nothing else, begin to call them by their name."

Honestly, I think Pluto in Sagittarius has done a number on the Religious Right of all beliefs, but here in the US, mainly Christianity.

I've been observing a number of churches dying, shutting their doors because of scandals that drive away membership, or even membership that has aged and does not have a younger generation to pass the torch of leadership onto. Even many of the Big Churches that have emerged over the course of the past decade have generally been more "mainstream" and even spiritual in appeal.

The once powerful Christian Coalition is now in serious membership and financial decline with factions re-emerging and splitting over differences. Other fundamentalist movements, along with the Catholic Church have been plagued with scandals involving supposedly moral clergymen revealed as pedophiles and adulterers. Even what should be a harmless revelation like homosexuality can throw an entire congregation into major upheaval.

The Republican Party, once dominated by the Religious Right movement, after having been summarily ejected from control of Congress, is now itself in disarray, with factions competing for control of the 2008 agenda.

Also consider, when was the last time you heard Bush tout his "Born Again" Christianity?

I won't rule out another power grab by the Religious Fundamentalists, and Jupiter in Sag will probably see one last desperate push, but I think by and large, their time of political dominance is at an end, at least for now. The emerging threat is that of the Corporatists themselves, and their insatiable lust for power and control. They are the real challenge we must face, as they have grown stronger all while the Fundies were out in the open wreaking havoc, drawing our attention away from them.

George W. Bush has purged senior military and intelligence officials who were obstacles to a wider war in the Middle East, broadening his options for both escalating the conflict inside Iraq and expanding the fighting to Iran and Syria with Israel's help.
On Jan. 4, Bush ousted the top two commanders in the Middle East, Generals John Abizaid and George Casey, who had opposed a military escalation in Iraq, and removed Director of National Intelligence John Negroponte, who had stood by intelligence estimates downplaying the near-term threat from Iran's nuclear program.

Most Washington observers have treated Bush's shake-up as either routine or part of his desire for a new team to handle his planned "surge" of U.S. troops in Iraq. But intelligence sources say the personnel changes also fit with a scenario for attacking Iran's nuclear facilities and seeking violent regime change in Syria.

Bush appointed Admiral William Fallon as the new chief of Central Command for the Middle East despite the fact that Fallon, a former Navy fighter pilot and currently head of the Pacific Command, will oversee two ground wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

The choice of Fallon makes more sense if Bush foresees a bigger role for two aircraft carrier groups now poised off Iran's coastline, such as support for possible Israeli air strikes against Iran's nuclear targets or as a deterrent against any overt Iranian retaliation.

Negroponte's departure should give Bush a freer hand if he decides to support attacks on Iran's nuclear facilities. Bush's neocon advisers fear that if Bush doesn't act decisively in his remaining two years in office, his successor may lack the political will to launch a preemptive strike against Iran.

Bush reportedly has been weighing his military options for bombing Iran's nuclear facilities since early 2006. But he has encountered resistance from the top U.S. military brass, much as he has with his plans to escalate U.S. troop levels in Iraq.

Lindsey Graham shill for the administration on Meet the Press this weekend, and hearing him state with utter conviction and a gleam in his eye, "We've got a new team on the ground. We're going to come up with a new strategy. The strategy is going to be designed to win," I couldn't help but think of the reports from psychiatrists who have treated patients with delusional personalities. The truly deranged are often so committed to their delusions, and so insistent, that part of your brain actually starts thinking: Hmm, maybe this person really is Napoleon! Maybe that woman really is a fried egg! Maybe the surge really will lead to victory in Iraq!

Meanwhile, the other part of your brain -- the rational part -- is reminding you that, no, in fact, that person is not Napoleon or any part of a Denny's Grand Slam Breakfast. They are simply utterly insane.

Past Time to Get Real on Iraq

We’ve been down this road before. This time, it has to be different.

There have been too many times that President Bush has promised a new strategy on Iraq, only to repeat the same old set of failed approaches and unachievable objectives. Americans need to hear Mr. Bush offer something truly new — not more glossy statements about ultimate victory, condescending platitudes about what hard work war is, or aimless vows to remain “until the job is done.”

If the voters sent one clear message to Mr. Bush last November, it was that it is time to start winding down America’s involvement in this going-nowhere war.

What they need is for the president to acknowledge how bad things have gotten in Iraq (not just that it is not going as well as he planned) and to be honest about how limited the remaining options truly are. The country wants to know how Mr. Bush plans to end its involvement in a way that preserves as much of the nation’s remaining honor and influence as possible, limits the suffering of the Iraqi people and the harm to Iraq’s neighbors, and gives Iraqi leaders a chance — should they finally decide to take it — to rescue their country from an even worse disaster once the Americans are gone.

The religious are rallying by torchlight outside parliament this evening. In the Lords they are trying to strike out regulations in the new equality act that outlaw discrimination and harassment of gays, making it illegal to discriminate in providing any goods and services to anyone, from healthcare to hotel rooms. This is a mighty test of strength between the religious and the secular. Any peers against discrimination, get on down the Lords: the vote is at 7.30pm. Will the Tories prove to be gay-friendly?
Christians, Muslims and Jews are all fighting against the sexual orientation regulations with a wrecking clause that would render them meaningless: "Nothing in these regulations shall force an individual to act against their conscience or strongly held religious beliefs." Anyone could use their "conscience" to discriminate against gays.

Get one thing clear: this law does not stop religions from banning gays joining their congregations or becoming priests. (Though they don't seem to be very good at it.) But it does oblige any organisation or business offering services to the public to offer them equally to all comers. Bizarre and repugnant ads in newspapers from Christian organisers have spread outright lies about what this law does. Their campaign, strongly supported by the Daily Mail, has whipped up a degree of homophobia still lurking under an apparently tolerant surface. The gay rights group Stonewall has been horrified at the resurgence of threats and obscene abuse.

Sharon, there are a few 'different' sets of forks. There are chakra sets, harmonic sets, etc...C and G are a good start. Shia hostages hanged in streets in revenge for Saddam's execution

Saddam Hussein's execution has inspired a gruesome cycle of revenge, with scores of Shia Muslims found hanged from lampposts in Baghdad.

The residents of the city's Haifa Street will long remember the events of Sunday morning. As shop owners raised their shutters and stall holders set out their stock, three minibuses roared to a halt.

Gunmen jumped out and pulled blindfolded prisoners on to the street. Ropes were tied to lampposts and electricity poles. Those hostages who resisted were shot. Others who were still alive had nooses tied around their necks and were then suspended in mid air to choke to death.

All were left hanging, and the victims received little sympathy from those who witnessed the events.

"We watched as all these blindfolded men were hung up and some were shot in the head," Imad Atwan, a supermarket worker said.

"Altogether there were 23 bodies. We are all Sunni people here so we supported the gunmen. Some of them are the guards of our neighbourhood.

"Somebody called the police and the guards waited to shoot at them when they arrived.

"Half an hour after the police fled, they came back with the army and took the bodies away."

Capt Mohammad Salim, of the interior ministry, said: "We have gathered 102 Shia bodies and believe that 90 per cent of them were taken hostage for Saddam Hussein's execution and then found hanging from poles by ropes."

The discoveries were not limited to Haifa Street. People murdered in the same way had been found in Al Doura district and Amriya, in western Baghdad.

The interior ministry estimates that 200 Iraqis were taken hostage after Saddam was sentenced to death for ordering the murder of 148 Shia villagers in the city of Dujail after an assassination attempt in the 1980s.

"We counted the people from families that reported a phone call claiming their relatives would be killed if Saddam Hussein was hung."

Iraq is George Bush's Vietnam, and we cannot allow history to repeat itself any longer. Our troops deserve better. We must act now.

Today, I introduced legislation to reclaim the people's right to a full voice in the president's plan to send more troops to Iraq. My bill will say that no additional troops can be sent and no additional dollars can be spent on such an escalation unless and until Congress approves the president's plan.

Congress must exert its constitutional authority and demand a vote before any escalation in Iraq. In October 2002, Members of Congress authorized a war against the regime of Saddam Hussein, not to send our troops into a civil war. I voted against that resolution and feel an escalation of this war only compounds the original mistake of going in the first place.

A military escalation in Iraq would not strengthen our national security -- instead it would further weaken it by enabling the Iraqis to avoid taking responsibility for their own future. More than 3000 American soldiers have died in Iraq and more than 22,000 have been wounded.

Instead of continued mistakes and shoot-from-the-hip policies, it's time to get this right. The President must make clear the mission of our troops and lay out a path to bring them home, and Congress must stop being a rubberstamp for failed policies and stand up and act.

Teddy Kennedy gave a speech at the National Press Club yesterday about his new legislation that would require Congressional approval before troop levels can be increased. Afterward, he was asked if he would try to block the escalation with an amendment to an upcoming Iraq spending request.

“The horse will be out of the barn by the time we get there,” Senator Kennedy replied. “The president makes his speech now. We’re going to get the appropriation request probably the end of January, early February.” He said it could take eight more weeks for Congress to act. “By that time, the troops will already be there,” he said. “And then we’ll be asked, are we going to deny the body armor to the young men and women over there?”

In other words, the president will ask us to the prom once he reserves the hotel room.

Democrats: Anti-surge resolution is only the beginning

When Ted Kennedy offered legislation earlier this week to block funding for a troop increase without further congressional approval, Harry Reid seemed to back away by calling instead for a nonbinding "bipartisan statement" opposing any escalation in Iraq. At a press conference at the U.S. Capitol a few minutes ago, however, Sen. Chuck Schumer made it clear that Reid's nonbinding resolution would be only a first step -- a way to measure congressional opposition to a "surge" and the president's response to it.

Schumer was an early Iraq hawk, but his experience as chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee has probably left him with a pretty good sense of where the American people are on the war. He said that the president faces an "enormous" task tonight if he hopes to convince the public -- or Congress, for that matter -- that the way forward in Iraq involves sending more U.S. troops to fight there. He predicted that if the Senate were to hold an up-or-down vote on Bush's "surge" plan today, the opposition to the plan would be "overwhelming" and that Republicans would be part of it.

Schumer said "an escalation" alone is "not going to bring any kind of safety or calm" in Iraq. Appearing at the same press conference, Sen. Jack Reed said predicted that Bush will "dress up" his speech tonight with "rhetoric" about a "new approach," but he complained that the plan Bush has in mind is less of a "surge" than it is a "gradual escalation" that will set a "new troop plateau" without accomplishing any strategic goals. Retired Gen. Wesley Clark dismissed the Bush plan as "stay the course more," a "political gesture made at the expense of our men and women in uniform and their families" and designed to hide the fact that the president still isn't addressing the diplomatic issues he'll need to address if he has any hope of success in Iraq or the Middle East.

Like Clark, Schumer said that Bush is putting the cart before the horse -- that he has come up with a plan to send more troops to Iraq without articulating a strategy they will further. Schumer said that hearings before the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the Senate Armed Services Committee this week and in the weeks ahead will allow Democrats to "ask the tough questions" about the right way forward in Iraq. In the meantime, he said he expects Democratic leaders to draft a "simple resolution" opposing the "surge" and to get it before the Senate as early as next week. "That resolution will not be the last thing we do," Schumer said.

He declined to get specific about what the Senate might do after passing a resolution. Asked whether Democrats might move to limit appropriations for an expanded war, he said: "We will examine everything."

ABC News is reporting that the "surge" Bush is expected to announce in a prime time speech tonight has already begun. Ninety advance troops from the 82nd Airborne Division arrived in Baghdad today.

An additional battalion of roughly 800 troops from the same division are expected to arrive in Baghdad Thursday.

According to the ABC article,the plan is to divide the the city of Baghdad into nine separate sections supposedly at the request of Iraqis who want one Army and police battalion devoted to section.

The additional U.S. troops being sent to Baghdad will be divided among those nine sections of the city, nearly doubling U.S. combat power in the region.

In a switch from the current course of action, these U.S. forces will be housed in the very neighborhoods they patrol. Military planners tell ABC News there will eventually be about 30 mini-bases, called joint security stations, scattered around Baghdad housing both U.S. and Iraqi troops.

They have the audacity to admit they are sending bodies to the slaughter house, admitting "the new approach is riskier and will likely mean more U.S. casualties in the short-run"... "we don't know if this will work, but we do know the old way was failing."

They have beaten the Dems at their game. Binding or non-binding resolutions - what are they worth now? Bush/Cheney have basically said they don't give a rat's ass about the constitution, the people of this country, it's military, and the many more Iraqis who too will die.

After his attempted speech tonight, pull out these and use them:

Where the soldiers will sleep each night, how they will be resupplied, what they will do with their prisoners, and so forth was not explained on the radio.

And now Fred Kagan, and General Keane behind the scenes, have expanded the powerpoint presentation into an article of sorts. The mask falls off the euphemism ``securing the population''. And what do we see? Our old friend, the proverbial ``cordon and search operation''.

Let's let Kagan and his co-authors say it:

``When the operation begins, joint U.S.-Iraqi teams isolate the district through checkpoints and other outposts, patrols, surveillance, and obstacles. American and Iraqi infantry then sweep through the district. They cordon off each house or apartment block and then knock on the door, asking to examine the inside. If they are granted permission, they enter politely and then examine every part of the structure for weapons caches and evidence of enemy activity. The Iraqi forces with them provide a vital cultural interface with the inhabitants both by communicating with them and by sensing irregularities. On the rare occasions when the occupants attempt to refuse permission to examine the house, Iraqi and U.S. soldiers enter by force and continue their search.''

``When every structure in the district (including every mosque) has been searched and all weapons caches and suspicious individuals have been removed, neither the American nor the Iraqi soldiers leave the neighborhood. Instead, they establish permanent positions in disused factories, houses, apartments, government buildings, and, if necessary, schools (although coalition forces prefer to avoid occupying schools because it sends a bad signal to the neighborhood). American and Iraqi teams man each position jointly. They allow traffic into the neighborhood to resume, although they continue to man joint outposts at critical intersections.'' (page 22).

Although Kagan describes the first Battle of Fallujah in April 2004 as a failure of a clearing and holding operation, and Tall Afar in September 2005 as a success, he doesn't mention the second Fallujah operation in November and December 2004, which blasted the city and left a horrible humanitarian catastrophe. Today, Fallujah is not a pretty sight. And, ominously, Kagan admits that ``some sequels'' may be necessary after ``clearing and holding'' the center of Baghdad, namely, ``Redeploying forces from Baghdad to clear and hold Anbar, beginning with Ramadi and Fallujah . . . .''

Before we forget, let's go down memory lane to November 2005 and another plan for victory in Iraq called, surprisingly, "National Strategy for Victory in Iraq'' , by the National Security Council.

All this talk about cordon and search, checkpoints, removing ``suspicious individuals'', the destruction in Fallujah and elsewhere, and the political ``leader'' of the area must do certain things or else, sounds like an echo of another horror story: the occupied Palestinian territories."

Chris in Paris was telling me that Bush's "new" plan for victory in Iraq reminded him of an episode of the hysterical BBC comedy "Blackadder."
With a little sleuthing, Chris was able to find the episode in question. The relevant part begins about 2 minutes into the video - I've transcribed the dialogue.

GENERAL: Now, Field Marshal Hague (A British WW1 disaster of a leader - my comment) has formulated a brilliant new tactical plan to ensure final victory in the field.

CAPTAIN BLACKADDER: Ah, would this brilliant plan involve us climbing out of our trenches and walking very slowly towards the enemy, sir?

CAPTAIN DARLING: How could you possibly know that Blackadder, it's classified information?

I really enjoyed this post on Speaker Pelosi. I too feel really great vibes from her and have watched her since 2005 and knew that she would be a great Speaker. One thing I really liked about her speech is when she said this was the people's House and not Democratic or Republican but for everybody. I also like how she stands up for her principals but when she is a leader she is not favoring one over the other. When she became minority leader she quit all the groups she was a part of so she could truly do her job as a leader and be fair and just to everyone. I agree with everything you said about her and what's going to happen to her. She's definintley going down in the history books and not just being the first woman Speaker. :)
