After interviewing Lawrence Wilkerson, the Associated Press reported he "said that wrongheaded ideas for the handling of foreign detainees after Sept. 11 arose from a coterie of White House and Pentagon aides who argued that 'the president of the United States is all-powerful,' and that the Geneva Conventions were irrelevant."

AP added: "Wilkerson blamed Vice President Dick Cheney, Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld and like-minded aides. Wilkerson said that Cheney must have sincerely believed that Iraq could be a spawning ground for new terror assaults, because 'otherwise I have to declare him a moron, an idiot or a nefarious bastard.'"

Congressman Predicts Troops Will Leave Iraq Within a Year

LATROBE, Pa. (Dec. 1) - Most U.S. troops will leave Iraq within a year because the Army is "broken, worn out" and "living hand to mouth," Rep. John Murtha told a civic group.

Two weeks ago, Murtha created a storm of comment when he called for U.S. troops to leave Iraq now. The Democratic congressman spoke to a group of community and business leaders in Latrobe on Wednesday, the same day President Bush said troops would be withdrawn when they've achieved victory, not under an artificial deadline set by politicians.

Murtha predicted most troops will be out of Iraq within a year.

Pat C - YES! I have been saying the same thing to friends for some time now. Our military is not there fighting a war, they are acting as police and security for Halliburton. I agree that if we pull out it would be a death blow to Halliburton and KBR, both of which are charter members of Fiendco and Friends. Besides how will we ever, the US that is, pay back China and eveyone one else that is funding this debacle. These IDIOTS have dug a deeper hole then they can get out off.

I also think that the recent trips to China and Saudi Arab Land were to bolster support for the inevitable invasion of Iran.

Yesterday, President Bush claimed that Iraqi security forces “primarily led” the assault on the city of Tal Afar. Bush highlighted it as an “especially clear” sign of the progress Iraq security forces were making in Iraq.

"The progress of the Iraqi forces is especially clear when the recent anti-terrorist operations in Tal Afar are compared with last year’s assault in Fallujah. In Fallujah, the assault was led by nine coalition battalions made up primarily of United States Marines and Army — with six Iraqi battalions supporting them…This year in Tal Afar, it was a very different story. The assault was primarily led by Iraqi security forces — 11 Iraqi battalions, backed by five coalition battalions providing support."

TIME Magazine reporter Michael Ware, who is embedded with the U.S. troops in Iraq who participated in the Tal Afar battle, appeared on Anderson Cooper yesterday. He said Bush’s description was completely untrue:

"I was in that battle from the very beginning to the very end. I was with Iraqi units right there on the front line as they were battling with al Qaeda. They were not leading. They were being led by the U.S. green beret special forces with them."

this is interesting....and predictable...for non CA people, the former Sec of State was Dem Kevin Shelley, who made sure that Diebold and crooked machines couldn't be used, that all machines had to have a paper trail....so what happened to him? One of the people who raised money for him turned out to be funneling illegal money....and all of a sudden, the media was calling for an investigation (the repubs were) and Shelley was forced to resign...it always was fishy to me. Then Bruce McPherson, repub, was given the job....he became even better known several years ago when his son was murdered in the Potrero Hill area of SF....has always been respected....but looks like he's gone to the dark side also.

I should add to that...it profiles ALL the attendees....ALL of them involved in suspicious voting problems in many states...this is just outrageous.

In what the Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) is calling the "Immaculate Certification" the North Carolina State Board of Elections has decided to certify Diebold. This is the same Diebold that three days ago said that they would have to pull out of consideration in the state because they were not willing to put their buggy software source code from their flawed Voting Machines into escrow claiming they had third-party software that could not be submitted to the state. This is the same Diebold that, as BRAD BLOG correctly surmised, were apparently making faux claims about their need to pull out of NC due to a court's refusal to allow them exemption from that state law. But what else is new for a company like Diebold?

And who made the decision to go ahead and ignore the code and certify Diebold? A gentleman by the name of Keith Long was hired to be in charge of the process for the state. And what are Mr. Long's credentials to handle this job? Mr. Long was one of the Diebold representatives responsible for previously selling the Diebold voting system to the state of Georgia.

Does it not feel more manic and insane this year? Is there not more commercial pressure and consumerist mania and does it not seem increasingly surreal and obnoxious and silly? Or is it all relative and it just seems more utterly intolerable because we've had 10 months to try and forget the last holiday season's odious marketing-shopping miasma?

Christmas decorations were out long before Halloween. Retailers were preparing their attack months in advance. On Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving and the most gruesome shopping day of the year, stores from the hellbeast of Wal-Mart to tepid ol' JCPenney to upscale shopping centers across the nation were either open all night or opened their doors at 6, 5, even 4 a.m. to accommodate dazed and bleary-eyed hordes of frothing shoppers, most of whom wouldn't know the concept of patience if it smacked their butts with a PlayStation 2, and by the way if shivering in the dark outside a Best Buy at 3:30 a.m. in frigid November drizzle waiting for a half-price deal on a cheap-ass Chinese-made DVD player isn't the very definition of self-immolating karmic torture, I don't know what is.

Air America’ Majority Report

Barbara Bush is allegedly TICKED off at Dick Cheney, Karl Rove, Andy Card, nearly all of them—except Karen Hughes—for how her boy is faring in the hearts and minds of Americans.

The matriarch of the Bush clan is colder than North Pole ice right now to those around her son who she thinks have undermined him. I’ll tell who my sources are if Patrick Fitzgerald gives a call and makes me—but the sources are very close to Poppa Bush (41), who has been traveling a bit with some of his old entourage, including Brent Scowcroft and others of the first Bush regime.

While TWN has been able to confirm that Laura Bush’s mother-in-law wants to do more than put coal in the stockings of the Vice President and the other top handlers of her son’s White House, we have not been able to confirm a slightly stronger bit of the rumor, which is that Barbara—not Laura—was planning to call on Nancy Reagan just to get a refresher lesson on how she took on and kicked out then Chief-of-Staff Donald Regan. (I embellish here; Barbara Bush is not going to take lessons from Nancy, it just sounded good. My source told me that Barbara was about to “pull a Nancy Reagan” on these attendants.)

Cheney may be tougher to dump than Don Regan, but then again, Barbara Bush is one of those wonders of nature (we hear) who knows no limits and can easily surge beyond category 5 hurricane winds.

Should be interesting to watch the role of the First Mother in the coming couple of months. Watch for a lot to change right after the State of the Union address, I’ve been told.

Thousands of Firms Could Stop Reporting Emissions

Thousands of companies throughout the nation, including many in the Los Angeles region, would no longer have to provide the public with details of toxic chemicals they release into the environment under a Bush administration proposal to streamline the nation's environmental right-to-know law.

For nearly 20 years, the national Toxics Release Inventory has allowed people to access detailed data about chemicals that are used and released in their neighborhoods. In about 9,000 communities, the annual reports identify which industrial plants emit the most toxic substances, whether their emissions are increasing and what compounds may be contaminating their air and water.

Seeking to ease the financial burden on industry, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has proposed eliminating some requirements for smaller facilities that must monitor their emissions and file the complex annual reports. The EPA will make a final decision on the proposal next year, after a public comment period.

Under the agency's proposal, 922 communities would lose all information from the inventory detailing emissions, according to a report released Thursday by the environmental group National Environmental Trust.

Los Angeles, Santa Ana, Santa Fe Springs, Compton, South Gate, Ontario and Fontana would each lose data from at least half a dozen industrial plants, according to a statewide analysis by another group, Environment California.

Forced to resign his office immediately as part of his plea bargain with federal prosecutors, the once-powerful California Congressman, whose leverage derived from his chairmanship of an important defense subcommittee, was a dominant type in the Republican Party of this era.

During his career on Capitol Hill, Mr. Cunningham’s style was loud, mindlessly reactionary and full of flag-waving bluster. He once described Bill Clinton as a “traitor” and compared Senator John Kerry to Jane Fonda on the House floor.

There are three phrases I have been hearing repeatedly (several times per day/every day) over the last couple of weeks from the pundits, talk radio, reading, etc., .... it's very unnerving! Here they are:

PUSH BACK - President Bush has been doing a lot of this pushing back lately trying to counter assults about his lies. So have Republicans been doing a lot of PUSHING BACK toward Democrats and Murtha for the same reason. Sometimes, once in a while, the Democrats PUSH BACK! Are they trying to make a good knock down, drag out fight sound a little more acceptable? Do they adapt this phrase from sports?, football? Whence does it proceed from?

DRAW BACK - DRAW DOWN - Used in speech/talk about troop levels. I never heard the phrase used during Vietnam troop withdrawls. It must be something new. I even heard a caller ask what "draw back" meant! I thought it was self explanatory, but I could be wrong.
I am just bugged to no end about these phrases/words coming out of the blue from absolutely no where and am without reason to explain the source of my ire about them. These two must come from sports talk too.
It must be the often repeated phrases "sea change" (which cannot be found in the dictionary)and "absolutely" have been pushed back, drawn back or drawn down to make room for other more irksome phrases/words. What a bugger.
Have these phrases been around all the time, and I just didn't notice them?
I have been on the internet only 10 minutes and am being hit with the phrase "drawdown" very early on. Here is an example from a economic post:
"What has kept the consumer intact has been the sharp DRAWDOWN in the savings rate from 2.4% in 2002 to the low 1.5% in the last quarter of 2005." It's unbelievable to me!

There is something that just doesn't jive about the President's speech yesterday and the content of the insight magazine article. Doesn't sound to me at all that Bush has eliminated Cheney from the Iraq policy or other matters of foreign or national concern. Did anyone else get a similar impression?

Well, Beverly, I'm with you--it is strange how some--until now--unknown, or little known phrase suddenly will be on every "pundit's" lips. Does the phrase fairy drop them on the pillows at night?

Also, because of sloppy education, sloppy standards, or maybe the valuation of speed over accuracy, words and phrases are often misused in a way that makes my teeth hurt.

I haven't heard "sea change" in a while, but haven't been watching tv much in the past week or so. Sea change means a change in the sea--for example it can be calm and blue and beautiful one day then there's a sea change and it is grey and roiling, and stormy--or the opposite.

Also, before I entirely forget my manners, thank you Joyce for a great article. I have printed it out and pinned it to my calendar for further study.

Re: The Atlantic heat conveyor........I've had a sense that the gulf stream has been closer in this fall in Maine, making it warmer than usual! Ie: it was colder in NY & Phila. this morning than it was here in Maine, ( & I'm at the top of the coast near the Bay of Fundy) According to the Farmers Almanac ( the real one) Jan. will be 8o cooler than normal, the rest of the winter will be 1 - 3o warmer than average.
Link this to the fact that the state of Maine is focusing on organic & non-genetic farming. I just got my Fedco seed catalogue. Dear Barbara, thanks for your comments. I finally figured out a couple of years ago what "sea change" means. I tried to look it up, thats why I know it's not in the dictionary. It is embarrassing for me to admit this, but am sufficiently humble enough to laugh about it now.
Honestly, I didn't know if it was one word, two words, or how to spell it. One day it just dawned on me that the sea is apt to change very abruptly and that was a metaphor for it's use in political commentary. Having insufficient water in my chart must account for my inability to understand the nuances of the sea!
I have been waiting for Herbst's report wv. If anyone missed November's, it is an excellent set-up for the December report.
He says that Bush will be protected at all costs! It is another phrase, though actuality, that I have been seeing everywhere lately. His numbers will not increase no matter what he does to improve them is some consolation, but wonder about the overall effect it will have on the running of the country. Perhaps a Democratic Congress in 2006 will be the only hope I can expect at this point. It would be the best deterent to any outlandish, distopian, destructive ideas he tries to implement. I want to list this essay "Erasing America" by Steven Yates about the very balant idea proposed by the CFR to integrate U.S., Mexico, and Canada, which was published last spring. This proposal is creeping up on us very slowly, but seems also at the speed of light. Although this is not a site I would be inclined to since it seems to be Libertarian, I list it for the great essay's value.

To have a Canadian official come out on E.T. happenings is interesting. I wonder if anything will become of it. Just a little personal note. I signed a real estate marketing/listing contract with a homeowner this past Friday, 12/2. I know that there are a few retrogrades in motion, such as Mars, and that Mercury was probably stationing (?) waiting to go direct on 12/3 or 4. How might that affect the progression of the business transaction? I did an event chart on astrodienst and it's a good chart for me personally as it has 7 Pisces rising and I probably then have Jupiter, Mars, Venus in the 1st house (my sun is at 0 Pisces in the 12th). Also, Venus in Capricorn is in my 7th house and Venus then transits my 8th house, Aquarius, all my 9 & 10th house Pisces planets, and, finally, my Arian 10th house, which should sweeten my dealings in the next few months. Anyway have any thoughts on the retrogrades, especially Mercury. If I'm not mistaken, I think I have Mercury retrograding natally. BTW, this house is in New Orleans but on high ground which didn't flood (it did flood in '27) and adjoining a beautiful park/golf course in one of the best parts of town (maybe the best!) At some point, I'd also like to discuss the astrological outlook on the future of New Orleans (and will look in the archives because I think that was covered).

Back in Miami, the NHC is still rather puzzled about Hurricane Epsilon's continued existence in the Central Atlantic. The storm that was originally expected to turn extratropical by lunchtime Friday has survived bad shear, water temperatures allegedly too cool for a hurricane to form in, and has made better moves than Barry Sanders in order to dodge a couple fronts that have threatened to absorb it.

Statement as of 4:00 PM EST on December 05, 2005

the cloud pattern continues to be remarkably well-organized for a hurricane at such high latitude in December. It has a well-defined large eye surrounded by a ring of convection...and the outflow is established in all quadrants. Epsilon resembles one of these annular hurricanes or "truck tire pattern" described in the scientific literature. Although this classification is for hurricanes in the deep tropics...Epsilon has indeed maintained its intensity...more than anticipated...like these type of annular hurricanes. Dvorak estimates support an initial intensity of 70 knots. Only a slight decrease in strength is anticiated during the next 12 to 24 hours. Thereafter...Epsilon should weaken at a faster pace and become a remnant low as it moves southwestward and encounters stronger shear. According to the SHIPS model...the 200 mb temperature has been the only atmospheric parameter contributing positively to the intensity of Epsilon for the past few days. Epsilon is already slowing down...apparently getting ready to make the southward turn...much anticipated in previous forecasts. Latest guidance shows a decrease in forward speed as the cyclone moves to southwest compared to previous runs...and the GFDL turns the cyclone eastward at the end of the forecast period. The official forecast decreased the forward speed beyond 72 hours to compensate for the eastward component suggested by the GFDL. By then Epsilon should be a remnant low...we would like.

In addition to the Rendon/Bamford article, The Lincoln Group is another type of PR organization that was hired by the government to do "propaganda" type stories in Iraq. This was reported in the news the same time as Rendon last week. The were awarded $100 million to do this work! The organization's head is just a "young kid".

I did not realize that the Cunningham scandal would/could lead beyond him and his co-conspirators, but looks as though it might lead to the C.I.A.
Congress is reviewing their defense budget and allocations to make sure there are no underhanded Cunningham suggestions/proposals, but what I am reading from Josh Marshall is something completely different dealing with a promotion of a man (forget name) to third in command at the C.I.A. by Porter Goss shortly after he was appointed to the top post. Hillary Clinton is co-sponsoring a bill to criminalize the burning of the American flag. Her supporters would characterize this as an attempt to find a middle way between those who believe that flag-burning is constitutionally protected free speech and those who want to ban it, even if it takes a constitutional amendment. Unfortunately, it looks to us more like a simple attempt to have it both ways.

Senator Clinton says she opposes a constitutional amendment to outlaw flag-burning. In 1989, the Supreme Court ruled that flag-burning was protected by the First Amendment. But her bill, which is sponsored by Senator Robert Bennett, Republican of Utah, is clearly intended to put the issue back before the current, more conservative, Supreme Court in hopes of getting a turnaround.

Secretary Rice's Rendition

It was a sad enough measure of how badly the Bush administration has damaged its moral standing that the secretary of state had to deny that the president condones torture before she could visit some of the most reliable American allies in Europe. It was even worse that she had a hard time sounding credible when she did it.

Of course, it would have helped if Condoleezza Rice was actually in a position to convince the world that the United States has not, does not and will not torture prisoners. But there's just too much evidence that this has happened at the hands of American interrogators or their proxies in other countries. Vice President Dick Cheney is still lobbying to legalize torture at the C.I.A.'s secret prisons, and to block a law that would reimpose on military prisons the decades-old standard of decent treatment that Mr. Bush scrapped after 9/11.

House Passes 3 Tax Cuts, Plans a 4th

Cost Would Outstrip Recent Action on Deficit

The House passed three separate tax cuts yesterday and plans to approve a fourth today, trimming the federal revenue by $94.5 billion over five years -- nearly double the budget savings that Republicans muscled through the House last month.

GOP leaders portray the tax bills -- for the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast, affluent investors, U.S. troops serving in Iraq and taxpayers who otherwise would be hit by the alternative minimum tax -- as vital to keeping the economy rolling.

"Our economic policies have done the trick," said Rep. Deborah Pryce (R-Ohio). "We are in the middle of one of the strongest economies this country has ever seen."

But some budget analysts say the flourish of tax cutting badly undermines the recent shows of fiscal discipline. Last month's budget-cutting bill would save $50 billion over five years by imposing new fees on Medicaid recipients, trimming the food stamp rolls, squeezing student lenders and cutting federal child support enforcement.

"I don't think it makes any sense to go through all the difficulty they just went through with the budget-cutting bill, then give it all back in tax cuts," said Robert L. Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a nonpartisan budget watchdog group. "If they want to cut taxes, fine, but they are going to have to cut spending by at least that much to help the deficit, and clearly they are not willing to do that. They have to start looking reality in the face."

Under rules reserved for the least controversial bills, the House yesterday approved three tax bills in rapid succession. The first, at a cost of $31.2 billion, would slow the expansion of the alternative minimum tax, a parallel income tax system designed to prevent the rich from dodging taxation but that increasingly has affected the middle class.

The next, at a cost of $7.1 billion over five years, would provide an array of tax breaks to create President Bush's proposed Gulf Opportunity Zone in the region ravaged by hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Businesses could write off much of the cost of new structures and equipment, while the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama would be granted tax-exempt bond authority for their own rebuilding.

Bowing to pressure from Rep. Frank R. Wolf (R-Va.) and other social conservatives, GOP leaders exempted casinos, country clubs, hot tub facilities, liquor stores, massage parlors, golf courses, racetracks and tanning salons from the tax breaks, exemptions the administration initially opposed.

Yesterday, Lynne Cheney appeared on NPR’s Diane Rehm Show to offer an indefensible defense of her husband’s attempts to link Iraq to 9/11:

I’ve seen Dick specifically say “no” to the question asked “is there a connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11” because there isn’t a connection between Saddam Hussein and 9/11. So, if your caller is troubled, I guess I would just like to know more specifics.

In fact, when specifically asked about the link, Vice President Cheney did not play down — but rather played up — the connection. Here are the specifics:

WHEN ASKED SPECIFICALLY ABOUT AN IRAQ - 9/11 LINK, CHENEY SAID IT WAS “PRETTY WELL CONFIRMED”:

RUSSERT: Do you still believe there is no evidence that Iraq was involved in September 11?

CHENEY: No. I think it’s not surprising that people make that connection.

Haaretz/Dialog Poll / Likud, Labor, Shinui voters back Sharon

Barring any dramatic developments in the next few months, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon has a good chance of being the next premier as the leader of the largest party, according to the Haaretz Dialog poll conducted this week.

Supervised by Professor Camil Fuchs, the poll examined personal status of Sharon and that of his party, Kadima, according to Israeli voters.

Haaretz reported this week that if elections were held today, Kadima would receive 39 Knesset seats, compared to 22 for the Labor Party headed by Amir Peretz and 12 to the Likud, which has yet to elect a new leader.

Nation's Alienation Index Up Significantly as More Feel Powerless and Isolated

'Time' reporter interviewed in CIA case

WASHINGTON (AP) — Special counsel Patrick Fitzgerald spent more than an hour Thursday morning at a law firm representing Viveca Novak, a Time magazine reporter whose testimony was being sought in the CIA leak case.

Fitzgerald and an associate emerged from the office of attorney Hank Schuelke at 11:30 a.m. ET, declined to answer questions and rode away in a taxi cab. A short time later, a court stenographer left the building.

An hour later, Schuelke escorted Novak from the building and helped her into a taxi. He declined comment when asked if she had provided sworn testimony in Fitzgerald's investigation of the leak of an undercover CIA agent's identity. Time Washington bureau chief Jay Carney referred questions about Novak to the magazine's managing editor, Jim Kelly, who was not immediately available for comment.

Fitzgerald had been seeking testimony from Novak about her conversations with Robert Luskin, an attorney for deputy White House chief of staff Karl Rove, who is still under investigation.

Very timely & uplifting post Patricia,
I was dumbstruck by Democracy Now today. Amy interviewed Leah Hodges. ( Katrina Survivor) I saw her testify before the House committee on Cspan the other day. She referred to the RT #10 on ramp as a concentration camp several times. Finally Rep Jeff Miller of Fla. pulled that male, power play, superego, "parental overdrive", clueless stunt, & requested that she stop referring to it as a concentration camp, because nobody was "gassed to death" in the ovens! Well the dictionary doesn't require that conclusion to qualify it!
So I called the Rep and talked to his aid, but of course he didn't get it either......"We're Americans we don't have concentration camps even when we deter people against their will & bundle their children off on buses, leaving the parents behind. There are still 1,300 missing children.......and the death count isn't any more precise than that of Iraq citizens. There are some 6,000. dead; more than twice the number of 9/11!
Today Leah Hodges looked so sad, I just wanted to reach into the TV and give her a hug! SHe needs our collective vibes, as 6 or 7 of her close family members are still missing. They have given DNA but of course that hasn't been resolved either.
She is a community leader & working with Dyan French ( that wonderful matriarch who organized all the neighborhood freezer food into her backyard barbeque to feed the hungry & has filled that yard with as many evacuees as can fit on the property. ( I think she's on the fringe of the 9th ward that didn't flood.)
Sharon, if there's anything you can think of to help this woman, please try to do it. And you have my e-mail address, if you can find anything that would help. All I can offer is caring letter writing and solidarity!

IS GEORGE BUSH THE WORST PRESIDENT -- EVER?

PARIS -- President John F. Kennedy was considered a historian because of his book "Profiles in Courage," so he received periodic requests to rate the presidents, those lists that usually begin "1. Lincoln, 2. Washington ..."

But after he actually became president himself, he stopped filling them out.

"No one knows what it's like in this office," he said after being in the job. "Even with poor James Buchanan, you can't understand what he did and why without sitting in his place, looking at the papers that passed on his desk, knowing the people he talked with."

Poor James Buchanan, the 15th president, is generally considered the worst president in history. Ironically, the Pennsylvania Democrat, elected in 1856, was one of the most qualified of the 43 men who have served in the highest office. A lawyer, a self-made man, Buchanan served with some distinction in the House, served as chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and secretary of state under President James K. Polk. He had a great deal to do with the United States becoming a continental nation -- "Manifest Destiny," war with Mexico, and all that. He was also ambassador to Great Britain and was offered a seat on the Supreme Court three separate times.

But he was a confused, indecisive president, who may have made the Civil War inevitable by trying to appease or negotiate with the South. His most recent biographer, Jean Clark, writing for the prestigious American Presidents Series, concluded this year that his actions probably constituted treason. It also did not help that his administration was as corrupt as any in history, and he was widely believed to be homosexual.

Whatever his sexual preferences, his real failures were in refusing to move after South Carolina announced secession from the Union and attacked Fort Sumter, and in supporting both the legality of the pro-slavery constitution of Kansas and the Supreme Court ruling in the Dred Scott class declaring that escaped slaves were not people but property.

He was the guy who in 1861 passed on the mess to the first Republican president, Abraham Lincoln. Buchanan set the standard, a tough record to beat. But there are serious people who believe that George W. Bush will prove to do that, be worse than Buchanan. I have talked with three significant historians in the past few months who would not say it in public, but who are saying privately that Bush will be remembered as the worst of the presidents.

There are some numbers. The History News Network at George Mason University has just polled historians informally on the Bush record. Four hundred and fifteen, about a third of those contacted, answered -- maybe they were all crazed liberals -- making the project as unofficial as it was interesting. These were the results: 338 said they believed Bush was failing, while 77 said he was succeeding. Fifty said they thought he was the worst president ever. Worse than Buchanan.
This is what those historians said -- and it should be noted that some of the criticism about deficit spending and misuse of the military came from self-identified conservatives -- about the Bush record:

He has taken the country into an unwinnable war and alienated friend and foe alike in the process;

He is bankrupting the country with a combination of aggressive military spending and reduced taxation of the rich;

He has deliberately and dangerously attacked separation of church and state;

He has repeatedly "misled," to use a kind word, the American people on affairs domestic and foreign;

He has proved to be incompetent in affairs domestic (New Orleans) and foreign ( Iraq and the battle against al-Qaida);

He has sacrificed American employment (including the toleration of pension and benefit elimination) to increase overall productivity;

He is ignorantly hostile to science and technological progress;

He has tolerated or ignored one of the republic's oldest problems, corporate cheating in supplying the military in wartime.

Quite an indictment. It is, of course, too early to evaluate a president. That, historically, takes decades, and views change over times as results and impact become more obvious. Besides, many of the historians note that however bad Bush seems, they have indeed since worse men around the White House. Some say Buchanan. Many say Vice President Dick Cheney

Let us hope we see this kind of statement used more and more to drive home the separation of most of us from the corporate stooges now running/ruining our gubmint. Eric Francis has this posted over at Planet Waves:

U.S. Foreign Money Addiction Means Trouble

December 10,2005 | NEW YORK -- It's an addiction. Every day, the United States sucks in more and more of it from abroad, just to keep the nation going. We speak, of course, about foreign money.

At our current rate of trade and budget deficits, foreigners need to purchase $2 billion in dollar-denominated assets each day just to keep the dollar stable, said Axel Merk, who manages $60 million at Merk Investments and runs the Merk Hard Currency Fund.

Over half the national debt is now financed by foreigners, according to Roger Ibbotson, chairman of the financial consulting firm Ibbotson Associates in Chicago and a professor at Yale School of Management. That's been true since 1980, but the difference now, he says, "is the scale of the game."

"I guess everyone wants to keep this game going," Ibbotson said. But if one of the countries we're most dependent on drops out, it could be "like a bank run."

David Wyss, chief economist at Standard & Poor's, is also concerned. "If this money stopped coming, the dollar would take a dive and U.S. bond yields would have to come up. That would constrain capital spending and housing and slow down the U.S. economy."

Foreign investments in U.S. bonds and equities set a record in September, the last month for which data is available.

Foreigners bought $1.01 trillion in U.S. securities in the 12 months ending in September, up from $866.6 billion for the same period in 2004, according to U.S. Treasury International Capital, which tracks foreign purchases of U.S. securities.

Why did foreign investors' interest in the U.S. intensify?

For one thing, investors can get a better return on U.S. bonds than they can in their home countries. Yields in the United States have been near 4.5 percent, while yields on Euro bonds are closer to 3.2 percent and yields on Japanese bonds are near 1.5 percent.

Second, our massive trade deficit has sent tens of billions of dollars abroad, as imports increased while exports declined, which has helped foreign business owners sock away plenty of dollars. And our budget deficit means the federal government keeps issuing more debt.

Then, there's our personal savings rate, which has been hovering near zero.

"We need the money because we're not saving any," Wyss said. "We need it from anyone who has a spare yen to lend us."

At the same time, economic growth in Europe and Japan has been weak, Wyss said. "The U.S. was the only large safe market where the yield looked reasonable."

The gush of foreign money "is critical to keeping the U.S. dollar from collapsing, because we have a large trade deficit," said Daniel Katzive, foreign exchange strategist at UBS. "If the deficit wasn't financed, the dollar would fall until it reached a level where U.S. assets were more attractive to foreign investors."

It's simple accounting, he said: Cashflow in must equal cashflow out. "If it doesn't, you have a big adjustment until you reach equilibrium."

Some argue that the waterfall of foreign money has also prettied up U.S. Treasuries. A study released as part of the Federal Reserve Board's International Finance Working Papers Series asserts that the yield on 10-year Treasury notes would be a full percentage point less without abnormally high flows into bonds. That's because increased demand for U.S. Treasuries has pushed the yield on Treasuries lower than it would be otherwise.

Normally, Wyss said, foreign investors would be reluctant to stake so much on the Treasury market because they would be worried that a decline in the dollar would erode their returns.

But, in recent years, the Japanese and Chinese central banks have intervened to keep the dollar high.

"Central banks have trained investors that there's not much risk there," he said. "That scares me."
