LIFE ON CAPITAL HILL
"You went into jail in the summer. It is fall now. You will have stories to cover -- Iraqi elections and suicide bombers, biological threats and the Iranian nuclear program. Out West, where you vacation, the aspens will already be turning. They turn in clusters, because their roots connect them. Come back to work -- and life. Until then, you will remain in my thoughts and prayers. With admiration, Scooter Libby." The above quote from Scooter Libby’s now famous note to Judith Miller, who was languishing in jail for her refusal to turn over her notes or name her source, (even after “her source” had given her permission to do so) remains a mystery as to the true meaning of his words. Was Scooter waxing poetic or was he sending a message to the neo-cons chosen messenger turned jailbird, and maybe a turned coat. Several years ago I went through a period of time where everything I touched or did turned to chaotic pandemonium. My speech most often was inarticulate, I seemed to be always dressed wrong for whatever occasion came up, dinner parties became nightmares of burnt dishes, babies teething, roofs falling in, bathrooms backing up; chaos, absolute chaos every day for weeks. My experience and everyone’s experience when disruptive energies swirl around is what life is like right now on Capital Hill. Watching the missteps, the recently enraged and awakening media, the looming indictments, George Bush’s noticeable ticks, swirls, jigging, and rapid blinking creates an image of poltergeists flying around the White House and the Presidency. Almost looks as if the jokes about GWB as the puppet are true and the Puppet Master has left the room leaving our “leader” to flop around like a rag doll. For years now what has been obvious to 50 percent of Americans and 90 percent of the World, is beginning to frighteningly creep into the consciousness of the other 50 percent. Was it Ms. Sheehan, the grieving mother of a dead soldier who wasn’t important enough? Just as America’s problems and the players involved resembles a train wreck, so is the astrology around them. There are too many interconnecting waves to even begin to address in one article. I must pick only a few as they relate to the grand events unfolding, and so I pick America, January 1, 2005, and the Grand Conjunction of Jupiter/Saturn in Taurus on May 28, 2000 at 11:51 AM Washington, DC. The Jupiter/Saturn conjunction and January 1, of course affects not only American but the entire world. Once we escape from our myopic view of ourselves and stop seeing ourselves as the only “center” of the Universe we are looking at a stunning diary of the times and only time will tell if it was “the best of times” or singularly the “worst of times.” The Jupiter/Saturn conjunction is an energy that affects the world for 20 years at all levels of human and earth changes. Taurus is an earth sign and concerns itself with things of the earth, food, clothing, shelter, money etc, and potential changes in those resources. Taurus is also ruler of the physical earth, all earth signs are concerned with the physical earth. In 2000 as Jupiter and Saturn aligned for its 20 year journey, Uranus squared that marriage, and we all know how Uranus disrupts, it’s also the “new” the “progressive.” Uranus at 20 degrees Aquarius in 2000 was a reminder to Taurus that he is coming, he is the change agent and the “status quo” would be shattered. In fact, all three of the outer planets were in universal signs (Sagittarius and Aquarius) signaling to Jupiter/Saturn that they could visit the past but change would rule in the end and that the change would be chaotic; when a person or the collective feels change is on the way, the tendency is to become more rigid and try to control. Another strong message at least to the US, was revealed by the 6 planets in the 10th house, Jupiter and Saturn in Taurus, and Venus, Sun, Mars and Mercury in Gemini, another signal of confusion among our leaders and institutions and of intended and/or unintended duplicity. At the dawn of the new Millennium in 2000 Pluto was at 11 degrees Sagittarius, knocking on the door of the US Ascendant and ringing the bell of brutal awakening for this country and carrying the message that all has not been what we thought for the last 200 years. It’s the Sun at 7 degrees Gemini, ever so close to the US Uranus, that’s creating the most recent topsy-turvy mess we find ourselves. Transiting Uranus has been squaring that Sun, and the day Hurricane Katrina struck, Uranus was in an exact retrograde square to the US natal Uranus. As the first sky god, created by Gaea without help, and ultimately becoming her husband, Uranus does not stand on convention or the niceties, and loves to stir up a hurricane here, an earthquake there, carve that coast away and level that mountain across the divide. Uranus has one more square to its own US place through January and February. The main thing to remember about those higher realm Gods which would be Saturn, Uranus, Neptune and Pluto, they most of all love turning kings into peasants and peasants into kings, and that’s what I think is happening right now. When the dust settles on this period of time, it will not be what our “leaders” have done to us; it will be what is done to the “leaders” all over the world and in every section of their life. Do not believe the mighty cannot fall because they are falling all over the world. And the more the “mighty” scramble for control and try to bring the hammer down on the people, the more you can be assured they are falling.
I said in my article in January that our politicians on both sides of the aisle haven’t yet realized how angry and disgusted the people are with them. I also said the media would have the chance to turn and they are turning. While millions could see the naked Emperor from December 12, 2000, millions more shockingly saw a leader at 9/11; hardly anyone saw a leader at Katrina and they won’t see one again and they won’t know what they saw in the beginning. The players, Rove, Libby, Cheney, Bush, Rummy, Porter Goss (his turn is coming soon) miscellaneous side shows like Delay, Frist, Abrahams, etc., are almost of no consequence to our own collective growth. We will beat them, but not with money, power or swords, we will beat them with our own and collective spirituality. Start humming.

Welcome Back. I will be going to a registered system as soon as possible, probably over the holidays or 1st of the year. I will let you know. Your emails will have to be registered however, if you wish to exchange emails you must do that between yourselves, I will under no circumstances be giving email addresses to anyone. The comment section will be open on this article only, and as each new article is put up, the comment section on the old or past articles will be closed, that way I hopefully can control where the hacking originates. Posted by: Sally on October 15, 2005 08:46 AMSally, How fantastic that the site is back up. How could I possibly explain how bereft I felt when it was down? Excellent, intelligent article, as always. It does seem that there may be a small ray of hope shining far down the corridor. It's much more that we've had for a long time. I, for one, feel some of the weight lifting off of my heart and spirit. I can almost breathe again! Definitely breathing much better now that Astroworld is back up. Thank you so much for all of your hard work.... Posted by: kristl on October 15, 2005 11:21 AMWelcome back, Sally. I have always wondered why someone would go through so much trouble to hack into a site like this. After all, isn't astrology just some arcane, inconsequential pseudoscience? I think they realize, as most here do, that astrology is no pseudoscience, and that you speak the truth of those events which must come to pass. It must be very frightening for them to watch as one after another of the transits take place, and one after another of their cherished illusions are shattered to pieces before their very eyes. And so, the "great awakening" unfolds. Posted by: NEOBuckeye on October 15, 2005 11:26 AMDarkness is drawn to the light. It's been suggested that golden light is more protective because of that (or at least it draws fewer attacks. I don't know if that is true, but it makes sense to me and I've used gold light ever since I read that. Whether it works or not, it can't hurt, and I'll be surrounding AW with gold light from now on. Posted by: kristl on October 15, 2005 11:30 AMWelcome back! Hey isn't this grand this downhill slide we're watching in DC?? The world is waiting for leaders that can tell us the truth about everything. Can we see this comming in the stars/astrology? Posted by: Charles on October 15, 2005 01:06 PMI am delighted you managed to get the site up and running again. Although I do not post often, I do read the articles and I keep track of on-going threads every day. It troubles me someone felt compelled to hack the site because of what -- differences in opinion, a different perspective??? Thank you for continuing to post such wonderful articles. The current one really hits the nail on the head, so to speak. Sincerely, Truewater2 Posted by: Truewater2 on October 15, 2005 01:23 PMSally- I am so happy to have AW back. I was about to go into severe withdrawal. Thank you for giving us this space. This article explains why AW is desparately missed: it informs, it provides much food for thought, and it is smartly written. Posted by: Garry on October 15, 2005 02:47 PMI don't know why they would hack this site either, but I think it's a "spam" hacker. This article showed up on Buzzflash, and the fact it's from the UN and on the BBC I give it more credance, plus it's what they did in NO. I don't know how long Bush can make it or if he will last the next three years, (I thought the people would have had him well out of there before now) but the beat, beat, beat to remove him will become louder. If you've noticed, Germany, England, France, Italy, and Turkey are politically shifting more to the conservative end of problem solving. Nonetheless, this government did this in NO http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/middle_east/4344136.stm There are some critical mid-points on GWB's ascendant and Saturn will keep on hammering those, he will see his popularity fall further. I heard Howard Dean, when asked why government, both parties are tone deaf, and aren't hearing the people. He said "well the people are usually ahead of politicians when it comes to change." That is one of the most lame answers I've heard. Who and why and how do they think they got there. We have "given" them the candy store folks and we gotta figure out how to get it back. Posted by: Sally on October 15, 2005 02:52 PMA good morning to all! I am so glad that the site is back up and running, the withdrawal symptoms were about to get unbearable! Thanks Sally for keeping the show going and I'll gladly register when the time comes! And now that I am working again, a donation will be headed your way soon! Popcorn? I'm setting up a margarita machine! By the way, I had a dream last night that Cheney died and the WH was trying to cover it up. In the dream, Schrub flipped out and was hauled off...Then I woke up. Damn, I wanted to see what else happened. Oh well, time will tell. Posted by: Cybear on October 15, 2005 03:02 PMHappy, happy joy- joy!!!! Thank you Sally. The first few days weren't so bad, but withdrawal started setting in quickly after that, followed by a feeling of being all alone. This site means so much to me & apparently to many of us. Thanks for putting up with the hassles, and thanks for bringing us your genious (yes, genious) at your craft. I was imagining what kind of issues I'd like to see addressed astrologically while the site was down, and you hit them square on the head! I especially enjoy revisiting the Saturn/ Jupiter conjunction because I remember everything that was so crazy in MY life at that time, too. I'm seeing some closure to some of that stuff now, which feels wonderful. Weirdly enough, I had problems with my thoughts/ speech then too. It's not very much fun to feel like nothing is going right & nobody can even understand you. Anyway- you really raised my eyebrows talking about the Uranus square in Jan./ Feb. I saw a prediction somewhere that this was when the New Madrid faultline would take a hit and was curious what ole Uranus would be doing. I'm about 200 miles north of St. Louis, just on the edge of a catastrophe. Anything you want to do to secure the site, is a-ok with all of us I'm sure. I think I'm going to quit smoking here pretty quick & one withdrawal attack is all I can handle at a time I think. Today will end up being violent in Iraq (either today or tomorrow) The towns likely to vote no to this constitution awakened this morning without voting booths or ballets. Blessings to all, Sally, Sally, Sally, I am so glad you are back. I took a page out of shylurker's book and cleared space under the bed. I am glad I don't have to spend any more time there. I hear the White House press corps has really been giving it to Scottie McClelland and there was some outrage because he accused Helen Thomas of not supporting the war on terror. Is he beginning to go through a melt down? Are the lies he is having to spew actually getting to him? It's all getting to be very very interesting. Your wonderful/astute articles and those of the other talented contributors to your site have helped me keep hold of my sanity these long five years. The contrived obliteration of our constitution/freedoms and the American press by these evil vandals desperate to turn back the clock of progress in America is beyond frightening to me. Like the cowards and loons presently holding our government hostage the hacker/s of this site cannot stand freedom of thought or dialog. History, has recorded how the dictatorial and corrupt frightened by any opposing discourse always attempt to mute/destroy those that have different ideas or views . . . need I say more. Hurray!!! Yeeeeeeha! Yippeeee! Bet you can't tell how darned happy i am to see you back up Sally! Did i say happy? I felt so guilty for awhile having addressed the wayward visitor, (prior to the assault on this site) but actually know it didn't matter whether or not anyone responded, since he/she was insistent on creating a scene. Like M, i wonder who is so darned concerned that they need to attack this site? The article, as always, was just perfect, Sally. Perfectly timed, as well. There aren't enough shovels to cover up the *hit that's hitting the fan. There will continue to be droplets of doo-doo everywhere this POTUS has walked (stumbled, tripped, fallen). I too will be glad to comply with whatever changes you require, Sally. Caring For Creation Bill Moyers I don’t fit neatly into the job description of an environmental journalist, although I have kept returning to the beat ever since my first documentary on the subject some 30 years ago. That was a story about how the new Republican governor of Oregon, Tom McCall, had set out to prove that the economy and the environment could share the center lane on the highway to the future.
Thanks to Pat for posting the link to aspartame and the flu shots/epidemic. You were right. The whole site was a very interesting read. And I have never taken a flu shot and never will. Was it on the last thread that Cybear? was posting about December 22nd being eventful. Gosh, I can't remember. So much going on here at home. I'll have to search. As for the avian flu, it has killed 100 people worldwide. 100 people does not an epidemic make. However, those "scientists" who resurrected, so to speak the 1918 Spanish flu culture, worry me. If any flu outbreak happens, that'll be it. Just like they did with AIDS. That was man-made. Patricia Posted by: Patricia on October 15, 2005 09:05 PMDear Sally, What a riveting article. I am so glad you mentioned Porter Goss in light of his decision last week to refuse disclipine/reprimand/dismissal to agents irresponsible in their work concerning 9/11. This decision was made against the recommendation of an internal investigation just completed last week. I know the tragedy concerns all levels of governmental bureaucries and to single some out would not be fair, but seems to me as a minimum he could officially address some of the internal "cultural" issues, which still exsit even after restructuring. U.S. Saturn and progressed Venus, Libra in aspect to 9/11 Mercury will be very interesting to watch. On a similar topic to this article, I want to share these two little movie tidbits since they relate to America/Democracy, a new television movie. Click on Howard Beale, there are two of them. Look at Beale in the boardroom first. I forgot to tell you all to clik on the Political videos...the very last option on the home page. Ms. Miller should have written Valerie Plame. That name is at the core of a federal grand jury investigation that has reached deep into the White House. At issue is whether Bush administration officials leaked the identity of Ms. Plame, an undercover C.I.A. operative, to reporters as part of an effort to blunt criticism of the president's justification for the war in Iraq. Ms. Miller spent 85 days in jail for refusing to testify and reveal her confidential source, then relented. On Sept. 30, she told the grand jury that her source was I. But Cheney out of the picture too, whoa. Pat C Thanks for the article on Judy Chalibi...the whole thing stinks and the NY Times once a great Amen to all the comments expressing relief that Sally is back. Astroworld offline is like a day without sunshine and a night without starlight. Cybear and Jill G, a few nights ago I dreamed I was watching Bush on television. It was live, but one of those scripted events with screened "regular Americans" lined up for props. In my dream, Bush behaved erratically and insanely, insulting the people who were there to applaud him, jumping around, toppling over chairs, etc. and plain acting crazy. I jumped up to record the event but just got a few minutes before the picture went dark. Then on a later news show I saw a severely cut snippit that just showed Bush walk in. All the crazy stuff had been edited out. Then I woke up and for a few minutes didn't know if I had been dreaming or remembering--it seemed so real. I remember thinking during the dream, "Gosh, now everybody is going to see what he is really like." This afternoon saw "Good Night and Good Luck" Great movie, though people who are younger than their late 60s are going to need some context. Posted by: Barbara on October 16, 2005 02:41 AMRaj, you asked about the coming week astrologically. There is an eclipse on the 17th that squares the US Mercury and falls exactly across GWB 10th and 4th houses. This eclipse relates to Saros Series 7 South (Bernadette Brady) begun June 22, 1248 19:07 GMT South Pole "the immense power, anger and force of the Based on that I would interpret the effect on the US (eclipse square Mercury) might be a shutting out of hidden information or knowledge. A sense of "what just happened here." For GWB it could mean the sudden release of these impending indictments supposedly coming for at least Rove and/or Libby and in a snap, the whole Plame issue will be over. Another possibility is the sudden resignation of Ms. Miers from SCOTUS nomination. For sure something will pass suddenly and unexpectedly for GWB and for USA. However it could be that for GWB the passing is a release and for the USA the passing results in frustration but an important lesson will be learned. It could also indicate Iraq and the sudden passing of the new Constitution, giving Bush an sense of success but with resultant Civil War, or the Constitution goes down in defeat adverting a Civil War for the immediate future. Anyone who is affected by this eclipse look to the house and planet affected, and expect release from a seeming growing crisis. Posted by: Sally on October 16, 2005 03:22 AMSally, regarding the eclipse, what signs and degrees would that relate to? This week should be very interesting and I hope nothing but health and happiness manifests for everyone here. Welcome back up! Absolutely nothing can keep a good woman down and that means you, Sally! Much appreciation to you and all the great astrologers here for your outpouring of love, high intellect and spirituality. Hello also to all my friends here. Pat POQ, thinking of you as you experience the seasonal change and prepare for winter. Please take good care of yourself and nuture yourself; the same to all the rest of you. I am not able to be online as much as I used to be but I will keep checking in. I am using my cell phone to facilitate my connection...still waiting for regular phone service but that is really small stuff; my life has been very blessed. I'll be glad to register as needed, Sally. Check back with you later. Shylurker, Sally, WV, or anyone else, have any of you heard from Jo? White Light to all.... Welcome, welcome back. Like so many others on this site, I kept checking it each day. So very sad about malicious, destructive hackers. And Sally, your article rocks. A while back we were discussing Fitzgerald's birth data. Some said 1960, some said 1961. Stariq has an article this week citing Dec. 22, 1961. Whatever the case, Fitzgerald's Sun is on Rove's Chiron and Pallas Athena. Pallas has always been regarded as a strategist, both military and political. In Rove's chart it is at 0 Cap. conjunct the Chiron at 25 Sag. Cybear, I agree with Sally. Your dream may have more kernals of truth than linear thinking would allow. Cheney's chart is being bombarded with adverse aspects, particulary his health. Isn't Conyers' Sun right on where that 2000 Jupiter/Saturn eclipse was? Must research. CNN is running a jagged and well over due documentary about soldiers from NC and their families who are asking bitter questions about the war in Iraq. Pretty fair airing of those who are pro and those who are con. John King reporting. More tomorrow night (Sunday) on Cnn. Night all... Posted by: Beasley on October 16, 2005 05:40 AMI mean the Jupiter/Saturn conjunction! Not eclipse. The conjunction of 2000 in Taurus. Posted by: Beasley on October 16, 2005 05:49 AMBeasley, I do have both birthdates, and kind of go eenie, meenie, minni, moe with them, but the thing I think is interesting is in the 1960 chart, Mercury is at 22 Sagittarius and in the 61 chart his Venus is at 22 Sagittarius, so Pluto is aspecting one of his personal planets and indicates a power struggle he will have and has had over this. Pluto will be aspecting 22 Sagittarius for the last time this month, (and he has had 4 hits over the last 18 months to 22 Sagittarius) so he will be bringing a resolution to his power struggles, hopefully for a win. Posted by: Sally on October 16, 2005 05:52 AMMan, are my brains addled or what?!! Stariq says Fitzgerald was born in 1960. Dec. 22, 1960. Yeah Sally! How I've missed "hearing" your voice! Good morning Sally, Astroworld, That was a gorgeous article, Sally. Filled with inner steel and confidence. >>We will beat them, but not with money, power or swords, we will beat them with our own and collective spirituality. Start humming.<< Do I ever love that. And I am encouraged as I have none of those three items you mentioned. Welcome Back, Sally! I so missed you. You are the other site that I followed so much (The other one is Starlight News) for the real insight into what's happening. I think I know why some people hack this site. Think of all the fundies who are taught that astrology is of the devil (I used to be a fundie, until I got metaphysical) and who also believe Shrub is somehow God's Great Anointed. A site like this that actually predicts trouble for the Great Leader by using astrological and intuitive means, is seen as a double abomination by those Bush cult types. And there's always has been the fear and jealousy that astrologers seem to be more loved and believed by the general public than all of the preachers on tv. All of it leads to a very toxic brew ripe for inspiring people to actually hack your site. Sally, have yout thought about not only going to a registration program, but a Scoop like system like Kos and MyDD have? I almost visualize a system where on diaries, we could have basic astro information, follow particular people's transits, the world of astrology in general, et cetera, while having a main page asd well.... Pat QQP, best wishes and my condolences. I hope you find a new kitty like Cinnamon. Cats keep you warm, emotionally and physically, when it's cold outside. Unfortunately, my daughter came home with the flu, and I caught it before this years formula for Influenzinum arrived, so I took homeopathic remedies for each symptom, and I'm doing quite well now. Yeaaaa! Helen, you are welcome! I'm grateful for some very good and wise friends who provide me with really good and useful information. I know people I would otherwise never have met because of the internet. First the telephone, and now the internet...technology has a good side! Patricia, I as sure as I can be that they are trying to control the major population with fear. That's a particularly evil thing to do to fellow human beings. wv, LOL, "Judy Chalibi"...absolutely! You are so clever and right on! You've probably seen the continuing list of articles the NYT has marched out since the one I posted. Most sadly the one from Judy Chalibi herself. No surprise in any of them. Like Norman he stonewalled. What makes Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation compelling, whatever its outcome, is its illumination of a conspiracy that was not at all petty: the one that took us on false premises into a reckless and wasteful war in Iraq. But to get to a point you made about the control by fear thing--has anyone else noticed this but me? Think back on this....every year in the last few years, the "experts" and the msm have reported that "this year is going to be the worst flu season EVER!" How can EVERY YEAR be the worst season ever? I haven't had the flu in at least 10 years, nor do I recall my friends getting the flu, so those factors make me suspect about the severity of the flu seasons past.....and also what the real agenda is? What these countries do with their new wealth could have substantial implications for the American economy. The petrodollar stash is enormous. According to estimates by the International Monetary Fund, oil export revenues of Middle Eastern countries will reach nearly $400 billion this year. On an inflation-adjusted basis, that is double the amount of those revenues in 1980, when oil prices surged after Ayatollah Khomeini came to power in Iran, and more than three times the figure of 1974, when the price of crude spiked after the Arab oil embargo. This time around, it's not just Arab countries that are making a lot of money from oil, but also countries like Mexico, Russia and Canada. Ted Carmichael, chief Canadian economist at J. P. Morgan in Toronto, estimates that the 19 big energy exporters will reap $781 billion this year, compared with $549 billion in 2004 and $324 billion in 2002. What ultimately happens to this windfall - whether oil exporters decide to spend it or salt it away - will help determine how the pain caused by expensive energy is distributed throughout the American economy and the rest of the world. The 8th house has something to do with finance and suffering so the country is moving toward increasing its national deficit, and it may take many, many years for this country to be free of its debts once again. This is due to wrong economic policies, unexpected natural calamities, unanticipated increase of war costs and a reduction in production activities as well as unanticipated increases in costs of living. Malefic Saturn, creates a pessimistic mood in the country. Financial matters as well as business matters get unexpectedly adversely affected. The transit of Saturn in Cancer and the transit of Mars in Aries beginning from July 2005 to February of 2006 is extremely malefic with much negative consequences to the country and world at large. Saturn's transit in Cancer until July 2007 = more bad news. With all this upheaval, I do see a light at the end of the tunnel because, after July 2007 the nation will be looking for change. That change will come in the form of a new government. I was encouraged by his last paragraph: the US will be looking for a change, and we'll get a new government. I can't wait to see what that will look like. I've been a member of the DU for about 4 years. In their 'Astrology' room, we used to have fights constantly. There were a few rabble-rousers who made it their mission in life to cause trouble in there. The DU Admin's finally had enough and made it a "Donations Only" room. Guess what? The fighting instantly stopped. I guess someone who wants to cause trouble will never donate. That's one way of weeding them out. I will gladly donate to this site. It's pretty obvious how many people rely on Astro World to get their Astro News. Sally and all, it's great to have you back!!! You are really the best - you're such a and thoughful, sensitive, loving, and uplifting being. I was the one posting at 4:51 a.m. above, forgetting that my name wasn't listed since I'm using my husband's computer. Things are at a point where I can now participate more regularly and my voice stream can combine with all of yours again. It feels good to be home :-) I'll tell you one thing I'm really appreciating lately in post-Katrina New Orleans, and that's the opportunity to live simply and begin anew in a certain sense. With lots of businesses still closed, traffic is still light, and choices are narrow so everything is more special. Of course, I am very blessed and not in the situation of those who are homeless and living in trailers or with relatives. Then, again, knowing me, I would find things to enjoy and appreciate. Don't get me wrong, though, I'd probably also find things to complain about -- I'm no angel. The hysterical aftermath of September 11 has put into place the main components of a police state. Habeas corpus is the greatest protection Americans have against a police state. Habeas corpus ensures that Americans can only be detained by law. They must be charged with offenses, given access to attorneys, and brought to trial. Habeas corpus prevents the despotic practice of picking up a person and holding him indefinitely. President Bush claims the power to set aside habeas corpus and to dispense with warrants for arrest and with procedures that guarantee court appearance and trial without undue delay. Today in the US, the executive branch claims the power to arrest a citizen on its own initiative and hold the citizen indefinitely. Thus, Americans are no longer protected from arbitrary arrest and indefinite detention. More... WASHINGTON (AP) - Cash in the campaign coffers of Rep. Tom DeLay rose to $1.2 million over the past three months, although much of the money came before the former majority leader was indicted in Texas. DeLay raised about $920,000 in the three months that began July 1 and ended Sept. 30 in anticipation of a March primary race. His Democratic challenger in the November election is expected to be former Rep. Nick Lampson, who lost his seat in 2004 after he was forced to run in a new district under a redistricting plan pushed by DeLay. http://www.guardian.co.uk/uslatest/story/0,1282,-5348687,00.html Posted by: wv on October 17, 2005 03:14 AM...and this http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/10/15/AR2005101501539.html How a Lobbyist Stacked the Deck
Washington -- Listen to Democrats and it is easy to say what they are not. They are not the party that led America to war in Iraq. They are not the party trying to privatize Social Security, cut taxes to the rich or add to the deficit. They are not the party responsible for the slow federal response to Hurricane Katrina, whose top leaders in the House and Senate are under investigation, whose White House is being scrutinized by a special prosecutor, or whose members are up in arms over their president's latest Supreme Court selection. Democrats, some barely able to contain their glee, seem to have embraced the strategy of Napoleon Bonaparte, who famously advised: "Never interrupt your enemy when he is making a mistake." By Farhad Manjoo Oct. 16, 2005 | During the past couple of weeks, the New York Times has been promising to eventually publish a thorough account of its reporter Judith Miller's run-in with federal prosecutors investigating the leak of CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity. On Sunday, the paper finally published that report. Unfortunately, the account, along with a personal firsthand account by Miller herself, raises more questions -- about Miller, the Times and the Bush administration's attempts to manipulate the press -- than it answers. The paper's coverage provides a broad and intriguing outline of Miller's dealings with I. Lewis Libby, Vice President Dick Cheney's chief of staff, and his attempts to discredit Joseph Wilson, the former ambassador who began criticizing the Bush administration's case for war in the summer of 2003. But many details in the report are mystifying. In particular, it's unclear why the Times allowed Miller -- a reporter whose discredited work on weapons of mass destruction had recently embarrassed the paper -- to be put in charge of the Times' response to investigators looking into the Plame leak. Some revelations are astonishing: Apparently nobody at the newspaper asked to review Miller's notes in the Plame case before allowing her to defy Fitzgerald, and before the paper's management made her a high-profile symbol of press freedom in peril. http://www.salon.com/news/feature/2005/10/16/times_miller/print.html Posted by: wv on October 17, 2005 03:17 PMWV garry, It keeps a lot of us with websites that are more secure and less creative than we'd like...ps according to my network engineer son who specializes in security it isn't even considered (legally) to be hacking or even spamming sigh. When we practice walking meditation beautifully, we massage Earth with our feet and plant seeds of joy and happiness with each step. Walk slowly with love and awareness on each step. Our mother will heal us and we shall heal her." Lovely day to all,
This may not be the evironmentally friendly Admin. but they sure are good at recycling. There is already talk of who will replace Rove and Libby if they resign following indictments. Given his close ties to Cheney, Douglas Feith's replacement as Deputy Secretary of Defense for Policy and Plans Eric Edelman is rumored to be a top candidate to replace Libby as Cheney's Chief of Staff. CIA Leakgate may be part of a larger intelligence war between the CIA and Pentagon. Miller's status as a security cleared Defense Department embedded reporter adds to the mix of intrigue The involvement of the Pentagon in Miller's aspect of the CIA leak matter may indicate that senior Pentagon officials have also been called before the Grand Jury. As previously reported by WMR, the Fitzgerald case has, for quite some time, dovetailed with the case by Federal prosecutor Paul McNulty against Pentagon analyst Larry Franklin and officials of the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC). The AIPAC case continues with other Pentagon officials, Israeli government officials, and a "senior fellow at a Washington think tank [specializing on Iran]" still under investigation. Franklin is now a cooperating witness having agreed to a plea bargain with McNulty. The links between the White House and Pentagon neocon cells, as well as others within the U.S. government, may be what Libby referred to in his letter to Miller: "They [the aspen trees] turn in clusters, because their roots connect them." http://www.waynemadsenreport.com/ Your words and your voice are so lovely Flo C. Consider the roots of the United States. While the official declaration of this country occurred in July 1776, according to consensus reality and the signing of the Declaration of Independence, a prenatal epoch began a century and a half before. Our forefathers and foremothers, at least as far as Anglos go, landed in Massachusetts in 1620. There are no more words to be said All we have left are the bombs Which burst out of our head All that is left are the bombs Which suck out the last of our blood All we have left are the bombs Which polish the skulls of the dead. The Bombs by Harold Pinter from War courtesy of Faber and Faber By Harold Pinter 10/14/05 "The Independent" -- -- The great poet Wilfred Owen articulated the tragedy, the horror - and indeed the pity - of war in a way no other poet has. Yet we have learnt nothing. Nearly 100 years after his death the world has become more savage, more brutal, more pitiless. But the "free world" we are told, as embodied in the United States and Great Britain, is different to the rest of the world since our actions are dictated and sanctioned by a moral authority and a moral passion condoned by someone called God. Some people may find this difficult to comprehend but Osama Bin Laden finds it easy. What would Wilfred Owen make of the invasion of Iraq? A bandit act, an act of blatant state terrorism, demonstrating absolute contempt for the concept of International Law. An arbitrary military action inspired by a series of lies upon lies and gross manipulation of the media and therefore of the public. An act intended to consolidate American military and economic control of the Middle East masquerading - as a last resort (all other justifications having failed to justify themselves) - as liberation. A formidable assertion of military force responsible for the death and mutilation of thousands upon thousands of innocent people. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article10630.htm By Sheila Samples 10/17/05 "ICH" -- -- The one thing -- the only thing -- that George Bush has ever done successfully is campaign. That boy sure loves to play dress-up. He's in his element strutting around in various costumes, while smirking and blinking before carefully vetted audiences whose members sign loyalty pledges and are conditioned to cheer and wave their flags as he gives the same smoke-'em-out-and-kill-'em-all stump speech over and over. And over again. Bush loves to talk about his bold vision and to brag about the options piled on the table, and his disciples love to hear it. Like their counterparts in 1930s Germany, these vacuous, grinning, paper-mache masses are loyal, patriotic and obedient. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article10635.htm NPR has a woman reporter named Libby Lewis and she By Francis A. The city placed the liens in 2001 to force her to reimburse it for clearing the vacant lot of tall grass, weeds and debris after Miers failed to have the work done herself, as required by city law, and after she did not respond to city notices to maintain the property. This shows what her attitude will be toward law enforcement if she's confirmed as a Supreme Court Justice: privileged people don't have to do what they don't want to do. Is this a coincidence? Besides stolen US vehicles being used in car bombings, British developed technology is also being used in Iraq bombs. This was reported in the NZ Herald yesterday. "bombs and the firing devices used to kill the soldiers were initially created by the British security services as part of a counter-terrorism strategy in the early 1990s." B*'s natal Mars has a right ascension of 161d 15m. On Nov 2, 2004 (Election Day) his progressed Sun conjoined it. On Aug 17, 2005 transiting Uranus opposed it. Maybe something to do with Cindy Sheehan? Uranus will again oppose it on Feb 6, 2006 and it's precession corrected position on about Feb 22. Transiting Mars will square it around Mar 14, 2006 and conjoin it Aug 6 or 7, 2006 to add to the Saturn activity during that time. In a statement, the organization said the decision was made after Mr. Bartlett supplied its president, John C. Goodman, with the manuscript of his forthcoming book, "The Impostor: How George W. Fitzgerald has zeroed in on the role of Vice President Cheney's office, according to lawyers familiar with the case and government officials. The prosecutor has assembled evidence that suggests Cheney's long-standing tensions with the CIA contributed to the unmasking of operative Valerie Plame. snip One former CIA official told prosecutors early in the probe about efforts by Cheney's office and his allies at the National Security Council to obtain information about Wilson's trip as long as two months before Plame was unmasked in July 2003, according to a person familiar with the account. It is not clear whether Fitzgerald plans to charge anyone inside the Bush administration with a crime. But with the case reaching a climax -- administration officials are braced for possible indictments as early as this week-- it is increasingly clear that Cheney and his aides have been deeply enmeshed in events surrounding the Plame affair from the outset. Posted by: shylurker on October 18, 2005 06:01 AMThe office of the Presidency is ruled by the 1st Inauguration of George Washington (although he was not the first president, there were 8 ahead of him, but this is the one we recognize) anyway that Inauguration was April 30, 1789, about 12:15pm in New York. This has been a good chart to track the office of the presidency and it's in trouble right now. The eclipse fell across its Mercury, certainly in the six months leading to this eclipse there has been a ton of information and missteps coming from the WH that has obviously affected the office of the President. As a side note whenever Neptune was in a fixed degree at 14,15,16,or 17 a president died. The midheaven is 15 Taurus and Neptune in a fixed sign at those degrees has been hard on the office. The progressions to this chart aren't all that good either. It will be a very tough year for this President and it would have been tough on who ever was in the office. Ed Schultz – the host of the most popular progressive radio show in the country — was supposed to start broadcasting on Armed Forces radio. Jones Radio, the company that syndicates The Ed Shultz Show, received an email on September 29 from an Armed Forces Radio official confirming that one hour of Schultz’s program would begin airing today, October 17. But this morning at 6AM, the producer of the Ed Schultz show, James Holm, received a call from Pentagon communications aide Allison Barber. She told Holm that she was calling so early to let Schultz know his show would not begin airing on AFR today. You’ll remember Barber as the aide caught coaching troops before a photo-op with President Bush last week. Barber told Holm that the Ed Schultz show would not start on AFR today because her boss, Pentagon spokesman Larry DiRita, was out of the country and couldn’t approve it. Barber also said she was going out of the country soon for a week-and-a-half. Holm asked Barber if the show would begin when DiRita and Barber returned. Barber said she couldn’t guarantee that. Here’s the really interesting part. Barber told Holm she heard Ed announced that he would begin on AFR during his show Friday. Schultz’s show Friday began with audio outtakes of Barber sounding foolish as she rehearsed the troops “Q&A session” with Bush. From Jo on Salon: "... Cheney may be target of probe BY JAMES GORDON MEEK, THOMAS M. DeFRANK and KENNETH R. BAZINET DAILY NEWS WASHINGTON BUREAU WASHINGTON - A special prosecutor's intensifying focus into who outed a CIA spy has raised questions whether Vice President Cheney himself is involved, knowledgeable sources confirmed yesterday. At least one source and one reporter who have testified in the probe said U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald is pursuing Cheney's role in the Valerie Plame affair. In addition, at least six current and former Cheney staffers - most members of the White House Iraq Group - have testified before the grand jury, including the vice president's top honcho, Lewis (Scooter) Libby, and two top Cheney national security lieutenants. Cheney's name has come up amid indications Fitzgerald may be edging closer to a blockbuster conspiracy charge - with help from a secret snitch. "They have got a senior cooperating witness - someone who is giving them all of that," a source who has been questioned in the leak probe told the Daily News yesterday. Cheney was questioned last year byprosecutors and has hired a private attorney, former colleague Terrence O'Donnell, who declined to comment when contacted by The News." http://nydailynews.com/front/story/356858p-304125c.html
Links within text http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/archives/individual/2005_10/007358.php CHENEY AND PLAME....Today's Washington Post story about Dick Cheney being a target of the Valerie Plame probe turns out to have no actual new information about Cheney being a target of the Valerie Plame probe. In fact, it quotes a former Cheney aide saying that "it is 'implausible' that Cheney himself was involved in the leaking of Plame's name because he rarely, if ever, involved himself in press strategy." However, if you're still holding out hope that Cheney is a target, Stephen Bainbridge confirms that both Democrats and Republicans agree that a sitting vice president can be indicted on criminal charges. Only the president is immune to criminal indictments. And of course, both president and vice president are vulnerable to civil suits, as the Supreme Court helpfully reminded us in the case of Clinton v. Jones. Joe Wilson says he and his wife may be taking advantage of that once Patrick Fitzgerald wraps up the criminal stuff. And when might that be? The Post article isn't very helpful on the Cheney front, but it does include this tidbit about timing: In a move people involved in the case read as a sign that the end is near, Fitzgerald's spokesman yesterday told the Associated Press that the prosecutor planned to announce his conclusions in Washington, where the grand jury has been meeting, instead of Chicago, where the prosecutor is based. Some lawyers close to the case cited courthouse talk that Fitzgerald might announce his findings as early as tomorrow, though hard evidence about his intentions and timing remained elusive. Since the story is dated Tuesday, "tomorrow" refers to Wednesday. Stay tuned. http://www.senate.gov/artandhistory/history/common/generic/VP_Spiro_Agnew.htm Spiro T. She is known for her work with the Republican Party. She was an assistant to George W. Bush and counselor to vice president Dick Cheney. Matalin, a colleague of Karl Rove, worked for Vice President Dick Cheney in the White House. She attended meetings of the White House Iraq Group, a secretive internal White House task force convened in August 2002 (nine months before the 2003 Invasion of Iraq). WHIG was charged with the task of educating the US public about the threat from Saddam Hussein's purported weapons of mass destruction. Matalin resigned her responsibilities as of 31 December 2002.[1] Although Matalin left the White House more than six months before the leak that triggered the Valerie Plame scandal, she is reported to have testified before the grand jury of Independent Counsel Patrick Fitzgerald. (Notes and records of WHIG meetings were subpoenaed by Fitzgerald in January 2004.) ....... Does anyone have her place and time of birth? Posted by: Pat C on October 18, 2005 05:37 PMHelloooooo? "... Think of it like baseball: the OSP pitched, and WHIG caught. The OSP was on no government payroll and suffered no Congressional oversight. Their tainted information and interpretations overtopped the Iraq data being provided by the State Department and CIA. The OSP was able to accomplish this thanks to devoted patronage from high-ranking members of the administration, most prominently Vice-President Cheney. Two questions remain: why would the administration take such a fantastic risk in attacking Wilson, and where are Bush's fingerprints on this thing? Both questions can be answered by another tidbit that has fallen down the memory hole. On May 22nd, 2003, two months after the invasion of Iraq, George W. Bush signed an Executive Order titled "Protecting the Development Fund for Iraq and Certain Other Property in Which Iraq Has An Interest." It is easy to bury ourselves in the minutae of the Plame scandal (who said what and when to whom, lie vs inaccurate memory, etc) and forget the bigger picture. Whatever crime was committed in this affair is part of a much larger crime that will most likely go unpunished. I'm all for convicting all of these people, but whatever Fitz gets them for legally will be comparable to Al Capone's conviction for income tax evasion: he did a hell of a lot worse than avoid paying taxes but that was all that could be proved in court. My guess is Fitz understands that but wants to give them as much of what they really deserve as he can. by Doug Soderstrom In Hitler's Germany there was a determined effort to brainwash the people so they might support Mein Fuhrer's efforts to conquer the world. However, what if one were to suggest that much the same is occurring in the United States of America, that there has been a determined effort through the socializing influence of our schools, the government, the mass media, the churches we attend, even that of our own parents, to pressure us into believing (just as Hitler) that our country has received the blessing of God. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article10653.htm

By Dan Plesch The US army and marines are heavily committed in Iraq, but soldiers could be found if the Bush administration were intent on invasion. Donald Rumsfeld has been reorganising the army to increase front-line forces by a third. More importantly, naval and air force firepower has barely been used in Iraq. Just 120 B52 and stealth bombers could target 5,000 points in Iran with satellite-guided bombs in just one mission. Get article background THERE are few things quite as hypocritical as American politicians hurling accusations of cronyism. The Democrats are lambasting George Bush about his weakness for promoting people such as Michael Brown, the horseman turned emergency-agency chief. But does anybody seriously believe that a Democratic president wouldn't appoint cronies of his or her own? And it works the other way as well. The White House is currently defending Harriet Miers as “exceptionally well-suited” for a job on the Supreme Court. But does anybody seriously believe that the Republicans wouldn't have been up in arms if Bill Clinton had tried to put his personal lawyer on the Supreme Court? http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=5021264 Posted by: wv on October 18, 2005 09:12 PM
WHAT good is vaccination? Obviously it is good for the person receiving the vaccine, if he is thus prevented from suffering from a nasty disease. More subtly, it can be good for an entire population since, if enough of its members are vaccinated, even those who are not will receive a measure of protection. That is because, with only a few susceptible individuals, the transmission of the infection cannot be maintained and the disease spread. But in the case of many vaccines, there are non-medical benefits, too, in the form of costs avoided and the generation of income that would otherwise have been lost. These goods are economic. Quantifying these more general benefits is hard. But a pair of researchers from Harvard University has just tried. David Bloom and David Canning, together with Mark Weston, an independent policy consultant, have looked at two vaccination programmes and attempted to calculate the wider benefits. Their conclusions have just been published in World Economics. http://www.economist.com/displaystory.cfm?story_id=5017166 Posted by: wv on October 18, 2005 09:17 PM
Indeed, in looking back on her career, it's clear that there were more red flags popping up around Judy Miller's work as a journalist than at a May Day parade in Red Square. We now know that Miller's bosses were being warned about serious credibility problems with her reporting as far back as 2000 -- a warning that came from a Pulitzer Prize-winning colleague of Miller who was so disturbed by her journalistic methods he took the extraordinary step of writing a warning memo to his editors and then asked that his byline not appear on an article they had both worked on. http://www.commondreams.org/views05/1018-28.htm
That is the blunt message of the belated but devastating report in Sunday's New York Times on how the paper turned reporter Judith Miller's "case into a cause." In its zeal to present its own discredited reporter as a 1st Amendment hero, the "paper of record" badly neutered its news department's coverage of the Miller saga and deployed its editorial page as a battering ram in her defense, publishing 15 editorials supporting Miller's protection of her White House source. "The Times . . . limited its own ability to cover aspects of one of the biggest scandals of the day," concluded the front-page article. "Even as the paper asked for the public's support, it was unable to answer its questions." http://www.commondreams.org/views05/1018-26.htm
EDITORIALS October 18, 2005 JUDITH MILLER IS OUT OF PRISON, no longer a martyr to the 1st Amendment, and on Sunday she broke her long public silence with a first-person account in the newspaper she works for, the New York Times. But it's becoming increasingly clear that she and her employer have abused the public's trust by manufacturing a showdown with the government. The newspaper once claimed that Miller's willingness to go to jail rather than talk to the grand jury in the inquiry into the leak of CIA agent Valerie Plame's identity was a badge of honor. Yet journalists from other news outlets appeared before the grand jury after receiving waivers releasing them from the promise of anonymity they had offered their sources. The Times alone insisted that such waivers were not enough and that it alone would stand up to an overreaching prosecutor. Posted by: wv on October 18, 2005 10:18 PMThanks for that one wv. Israel is redrawing its borders inside Palestinian territories to secure all of Jerusalem and put the issue beyond negotiation. Oct. 18, 2005 | At the northern edge of Jerusalem, on the main road to the Palestinian city of Ramallah, three towering concrete walls are converging around a rapidly built maze of cages, turnstiles and bombproof rooms. When construction at Qalandiya is completed in the coming weeks, the remaining gaps in the 26-foot (eight-meter) walls will close and those still permitted to travel between the two cities will be channeled through a warren of identity and security checks reminiscent of an international frontier. So as the scandal embroiling House Major Domo Tom Delay and Republican lobbyist Jack Abramoff grows hotter, there may be new revelations about the 9.11 attack. One of the most amazing thing about this most amazing scandal-hundreds of millions in slush funds beats Oval Office blowjobs by a mile-is that some of the same names in the Abramoff scandal also surface in connection with Mohamed Atta's. Less than a week before the 9.11 attack, for example, Atta and several other hijackers made a still-unexplained visit onboard one of Abramoff's casino boats. What were they doing there? No one knows. Wrestling with alligators There remains a strong suspicion that Atta's terrorist cadre-supposedly unknown and friendless and burrowing into the woodwork-was able to call on the assistance, when necessary, of a friendly global network. Could it be that this network is the same one being probed so gingerly today by investigators looking into Jack Abramoff? More... Posted by: Pat C on October 19, 2005 03:38 PM
WASHINGTON, Oct. 18 - The special counsel in the C.I.A. leak case has told associates he has no plans to issue a final report about the results of the investigation, heightening the expectation that he intends to bring indictments, lawyers in the case and law enforcement officials said yesterday. The prosecutor, Patrick J. Fitzgerald, is not expected to take any action in the case this week, government officials said. A spokesman for Mr. Fitzgerald, Randall Samborn, declined to comment. Bush whacked BY THOMAS M. DeFRANK WASHINGTON - An angry President Bush rebuked chief political guru Karl Rove two years ago for his role in the Valerie Plame affair, sources told the Daily News. Bush has nevertheless remained doggedly loyal to Rove, who friends and even political adversaries acknowledge is the architect of the President's rise from baseball owner to leader of the free world. As special prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald nears a decision, perhaps as early as today, on whether to issue indictments in his two-year probe, Bush has already circled the wagons around Rove, whose departure would be a grievous blow to an already shell-shocked White House staff and a President in deep political trouble. Asked if he believed indictments were forthcoming, a key Bush official said he did not know, then added: "I'm very concerned it could go very, very badly." "Karl is fighting for his life," the official added, "but anything he did was done to help George W. Bush. The President knows that and appreciates that." Other sources confirmed, however, that Bush was initially furious with Rove in 2003 when his deputy chief of staff conceded he had talked to the press about the Plame leak. http://nydailynews.com/front/v-pfriendly/story/357107p-304312c.html
Oct 19 11:09 AM US/Eastern Spain's agriculture minister dismissed fears bird flu sparking a global epidemic among humans as "science fiction", saying the virus currently only poses a threat to birds. "The idea of a pandemic among humans is something from science fiction," Spanish Agricultural Minister Elena Espinosa said on the private radio station Cadena Ser, as Europe braced for the further spread of the H5N1 strain of the bird flu, which has killed 60 people in Asia during the past three years. http://www.breitbart.com/news/2005/10/19/051019150912.ke81exhc.html Posted by: wv on October 19, 2005 05:27 PMPat C....I had a psychometry reading 2 weekends ago, and the reader said I had something to do with the goddess Bast, daughter of Ra and keeper of fire, and the temple of Bast, which kept cats ...which were mummified after death to join Bast....she was the cat headed goddess. The reader may have been influenced by the fact that one of her adopted cats came up to me, stared at me, and when I sat down, got up and sat next to me and purred. She said the cat NEVER goes near anyone....I've always had a real easy relationship with cats. The two ferals I'm feeding are taming up...the male is now sleeping on my bed and doesn't run away. The female is touring the joint, but still runs away. The racoon keeps trying to join them.... Seriously, other things going on which aren't getting attention.....the 'bipartisan' (Ha, I doubt it) team putting new tax rules and changes into the tax code....and eliminating the mortgage deduction and state tax deduction from the federal tax code could devastate the blue states, where properties cost so much more. My daughter struggles to pay the property taxes ($6000 a year, and that is about the median price in SF bay area, where most properties now are $800K to well over a million, some just 2 bed 1 baths in good communities) as well as the mortgage payments, and they can't make it just on her husband's salary. If put into place, eliminating the mortgage deduction will put a final blow to middle class home ownership. It will devastate the mortgage industry....3 more years of republican rule, and we will be back to no middle class at all....bye bye, miss american pie....and having suffered the loss of MY home under the tax law changes of 1986, which precipitated the S&L crisis, I see the black hearts of people in Congress thinking that they can make wholesale changes to current rules when people have formed their financial futures based on existing rules....it will be devastating. REGARDING RUMORS of the possible resignation of Dick Cheney, I have this to add to the discussion. When Spiro Agnew became the second vice president in US history to resign from office, on Oct. 10, 1973, Mars was retrograde in Taurus. This occurred less than one year prior to the resignation of Richard M. Nixon. This does not guarantee anything -- but it's a very interesting synchronicity that the discussion is even happening at all; it could be a kind of echo effect, since Mars has not been retrograde in Taurus since that time. The "health insurance" companies are constantly trying to figure out how to wring more profit out of their creations. Fewer and fewer people can afford "health insurance" so they are delaying care, dying from delayed care, or turning up on government footsteps (and guess who pays for the government-provided care?). And with every additional dollar we pay into this mess, the less we have to spend on everything else (including, as you mentioned, property taxes) and on and on. Disgusting. Posted by: shylurker on October 19, 2005 06:26 PMOutside of Josh Marshall who also links to the DeFrank article, I haven't seen anyone mentioning that Bush was either actively involved or at the very least complicit in keeping the leak quiet from the very beginning. In either case, he is definitely standing behind Rove ANYWAY. Posted by: judi g on October 19, 2005 06:38 PMShylurker, I'm one of those 45 million plus people with no health insurance.... Some of this is US, not them....I have read that the patient demand for the best and most expensive and ALL testing has driven costs thru the roof. The problem is still one of inequality....some people can afford to have equality and others are priced out of the market. In fact, there was a story over the weekend about couples in the Bay Area who make 70K or more and can't afford to live....(which is my daughter's case, and they make more than that). But think about it....the higher the housing costs, the higher everything else costs......the median price of a house here is $626 K now.....and good luck finding anything but a condo at that price. So that means that it will be almost $900/mo (on top of $500/mo in state property taxes) for her to put her 2 children in preschool for 2 days a week....so that she can work, and I take care of them one other day....gas is 3.19/gal for reg.....food is even higher. Posted by: judi g on October 19, 2005 06:47 PMI'm in the public sector, Judi G., and I can assure you that the people seeking care from us are seeking decent basic care--desperately. The insurance industry sets the benefits for people who belong to their plans, and the poor have to accept what we providers of last resort have available. So, those who are demanding the latest and most expensive tests and treatment, I presume, are those who can pay for it themselves. Nice of them to take that situation and turn it around and accuse us of being the reason health care costs are so high. The reason is the profiteering industrywide (from insurance to Big Pharma to big hospital/health care corporations and so on). Posted by: shylurker on October 19, 2005 07:15 PMShylurker, yes, that is what I meant....and as for the corporations....well, Bill Frist is one of the biggest of the abusers in that area! Now we have DeLay ordered to be booked, and indictments coming down on the whitehousegang. About Wilma, Myron heard on the news tonight that by the time it reached the U.S., it was supposed to downsize to a 1 or 2...although it is currently the biggest storm on record (2 Eyes, is it a mutant?). My comment was, I don't think I want to live anywhere near the coast and we need to start planning to move in the next few years, sooner if possible. I now realize how we arrive at the changes on most of the earth change maps...the mighty Mississippi mouth is very enlarged and FL is a seriour of islands. We don't know if it's global warming, the 20 or 30 yr. hurricane cycle, or a combination of both, but I'm beginning to think the coast is not the place to be, at least until the water settles. About Fitzgerald, Garry, watch for his story appearing at your latest Blockbuster in the next year or so - it will be a good movie. Any guesses as to who is cast to play him? Uranus in the 12th....my girlfriend has a large 12th house that encompasses Aquarius and Pisces --- major working out of karma has been happening in her life and it hasn't been fun - time for Delay to pay the piper and I am not at all surprised. This has the effect of strangling the storm and weakening it somewhat. It's sort of like nature itself has become afraid of the power of the storm and needs to rein it in. The evidence of widespread wrongdoing and conspiracy is before every American with a cheap laptop and a cable television subscription. And we do not have the same powers of subpoena granted to Fitzgerald. We know, however, based upon what we have read and seen and heard that someone created fake documents related to Niger and Iraq and used them as a false pretense to launch America into an invasion of Iraq. And when a former diplomat made an honest effort to find out the facts, a plan was hatched to both discredit and punish him by revealing the identity of his undercover CIA agent wife. Patrick Fitzgerald has before him the most important criminal case in American history. Watergate, by comparison, was a random burglary in an age of innocence. The investigator’s prosecutorial authority in this present case is not constrained by any regulation. If he finds a thread connecting the leak to something greater, Fitzgerald has the legal power to follow it to the web in search of the spider. It seems unlikely, then, that he would simply go after the leakers and the people who sought to cover up the leak when it was merely a secondary consequence of the much greater crime of forging evidence to foment war. Fitzgerald did not earn his reputation as an Irish alligator by going after the little guy. Presumably, he is trying to find evidence that Karl Rove launched a covert operation to create the forged documents and then conspired to out Valerie Plame when he learned the fraud was being uncovered by Plame’s husband, Ambassador Joseph Wilson. As much as this sounds like the plot of a John le Carre novel, it also comports with the profile of the Karl Rove I have known, watched, traveled with and written about for the past 25 years. More... Devastation is the byline and the term is apropos. It began to rain—very hard—late in the afternoon of October 8. As the droplets continued to fall (sometimes as hard as an inch an hour), the rivers and streams began to roar and the lakes behind the dams began to fill. Raining all night long, sheets of water started to pour over the pavement and roads began to wash away. By morning Warren Dam (which sits several miles above Alstead Village) was full and water was pouring over the top. The deluge traveled down the ravine toward town but was stopped by a blocked culvert. A huge temporary lake began to form in a large field behind the culvert. This held until 7:18 am (October 9) when everything let go and a 10 foot wall of water barreled down the Cold River and into the village, taking with it the homes, businesses, roads, telephone poles and vehicles in its path. We are left with a 5 mile long ravine. More.... Posted by: Pat C on October 20, 2005 02:07 PMnew crawl over at cloakanddagger.de: FIRESTORM COMING? Pluto at 21 Sag (which is my progressed ascendant), and it opposes US Mars and it is in square to Neptune AND it is moving into the conj. to the center of the Galaxy. A diehard republican http://news.ft.com/cms/s/afdb7b0c-40f3-11da-b3f9-00000e2511c8,ft_acl=,s01=1.html Edward Alden in Washington Published: October 20 2005 00:00 | Last updated: October 20 2005 00:19 Vice-President Dick Cheney and a handful of others had hijacked the government's foreign policy apparatus, deciding in secret to carry out policies that had left the US weaker and more isolated in the world, the top aide to former Secretary of State Colin Powell claimed on Wednesday. In a scathing attack on the record of President George W. Bush, Colonel Lawrence Wilkerson, chief of staff to Mr Powell until last January, said: "What I saw was a cabal between the vice-president of the United States, Richard Cheney, and the secretary of defense, Donald Rumsfeld, on critical issues that made decisions that the bureaucracy did not know were being made. "Now it is paying the consequences of making those decisions in secret, but far more telling to me is America is paying the consequences." Mr Wilkerson said such secret decision-making was responsible for mistakes such as the long refusal to engage with North Korea or to back European efforts on Iran. It also resulted in bitter battles in the administration among those excluded from the decisions. "If you're not prepared to stop the feuding elements in the bureaucracy as they carry out your decisions, you are courting disaster. And I would say that we have courted disaster in Iraq, in North Korea, in Iran." The comments, made at the New America Foundation, a Washington think-tank, were the harshest attack on the administration by a former senior official since criticisms by Richard Clarke, former White House terrorism czar, and Paul O'Neill, former Treasury secretary, early last year. Mr Wilkerson said his decision to go public had led to a personal falling out with Mr Powell, whom he served for 16 years at the Pentagon and the State Department. "He's not happy with my speaking out because, and I admire this in him, he is the world's most loyal soldier." Among his other charges: Ű The detainee abuse at Abu Ghraib and elsewhere was "a concrete example" of the decision-making problem, with the president and other top officials in effect giving the green light to soldiers to abuse detainees. "You don't have this kind of pervasive attitude out there unless you've condoned it." Condoleezza Rice, the former national security adviser and now secretary of state, was "part of the problem". Instead of ensuring that Mr Bush received the best possible advice, "she would side with the president to build her intimacy with the president". Ű The military, particularly the army and marine corps, is overstretched and demoralised. Officers, Mr Wilkerson claimed, "start voting with their feet, as they did in Vietnam. . . and all of a sudden your military begins to unravel". Mr Wilkerson said former president George H.W. Bush "one of the finest presidents we have ever had" understood how to make foreign policy work. In contrast, he said, his son was "not versed in international relations and not too much interested in them either". "There's a vast difference between the way George H.W. Bush dealt with major challenges, some of the greatest challenges at the end of the 20th century, and effected positive results in my view, and the way we conduct diplomacy today." www.newamerica.net Pat C....that NH story...wow....and Taunton, MA, having an old Dam on the point of breaking, too.... By Chris Floyd If anyone in the White House is actually indicted and convicted for the high crime of exposing the identity of an undercover agent -- in wartime, no less -- they will certainly be pardoned when George W. Bush finally limps away from the steaming, stinking, blood-soaked ruin of his presidency. "You can see it in their darting eyes, the twitches and fidgets: the fear, the nagging worry that perhaps, just perhaps, they haven't got it all nailed down this time; that perhaps, just perhaps, the law is something more than a fancy cane to beat the poor with; that it might, just might, apply to them as well. The sight of Bush's porky puppetmaster, Karl Rove, tottering out of his fourth grand jury appearance last week, with the shadow of manacles dangling before his pinched, bloated face, was an image to warm the cockles of every American patriot's heart. But this schadenfruede, however tasty and effervescent, is no substitute for the strong meat of justice. And even in the unlikely -- not to say inconceivable -- event that the entire pack of jackals gets herded into the hoosegow for the agent-outing conspiracy, it will not bring back the innocent dead murdered at their command. It will not restore the shattered families writhing in the pits of grief and loss, from Baghdad to Burbank. It will not be recompense for the pointless sacrifice of soldiers and reservists sent on a criminal errand, plunged into a brutal and brutalizing hell -- for nothing, for a chimera, for ideological lunacy, for the enrichment of cats already so fat they can barely stand up and waddle to the dish for another slurp of cream." Posted by: Pat C on October 21, 2005 02:09 AMAs the poster on Salon said, "Are you ready for it?". snip It isn’t just Pitchfork Pat and the Gargler who are coughing up furball apologetics for institutional thuggery, it’s also such nominal liberals as Tom Oliphant, Richard Cohen, and Jacob Weisberg, dubbed Eschaton’s Wanker of the Day. Some of the same so-called liberals who worked themselves into a capuccino froth about Clinton’s Monica lie shrug off the outing of Valerie Plame and the larger campaign to mislead the country into war in Iraq as no biggie even American troops and Iraqis continue to die and F16s continue to pound targets in the very country we occupy. I don’t know what indictments, if any, are coming down the pike. But I promise you this: If there are high-reaching indictments from Fitzgerald’s grand jury that threaten to rip out several vital organs of the Bush regime, the same milksop Machiavellis who extol “hardball” as the Beltway’s favorite sport will suddenly start worming their fingers together in major fits of nervous handwringing and warning us these trials risk “tearing the country apart” and becoming a “terrible distraction” to more “urgent problems facing the nation.” I remember this happening during the early stages of Watergate, when many of the poohbahs of journalism and punditry tried to bottle up the surge force of the investigations, feeling that the country had been through so much pain and woe in the late Sixties (the assassinations of Bobby Kennedy and Martin Luther King, the riots at the Chicago convention, etc) that another national trauma would be too much to bear. This was before the full dimensions of the rot and gangsterism were known, and even the Voices of Caution (such as Hugh Sidey) were forced to concede that Nixon had to go. I fully expect a replay if there are major indictments, with David Broder assuming the role of Sidey, Richard Cohen performing his yeoman best to much everything up, etc., and the all the former hardballers going soft, saying that whatever was done to strike back at Joe Wilson is dwarfed by the more important challenges facing us in Iraq, the War on Terror, the Katrina rebuilding, and so on. What's up with John Dean? shy, here's one from Joe Conason http://salon.com/opinion/conason/2005/10/21/miller_times/print.html Fitzgerald is no Ken Starr The same pundits who are absurdly smearing Fitzgerald as a partisan zealot were notably silent during the Whitewater disgrace. Posted by: Pat C on October 21, 2005 02:28 PMFrom the article: snip Yet an honest comparison with Starr is actually a useful exercise, if only because it helps to illustrate the phoniness of the grievances against Fitzgerald. Starr was appointed by Republican judges, under the dubious influence of Republican Sens. Jesse Helms and Lauch Faircloth. He had no prosecutorial experience and proved to be an inept partisan. His investigation meandered repeatedly into new areas far afield from his original brief, took nearly five years to complete, required many grand jury extensions, and cost approximately $70 million. Starr and his prosecutors leaked promiscuously to favored reporters throughout the probe, thereby ensuring favorable press coverage and inflicting political damage on their White House targets. Fitzgerald was appointed by the Bush administration's own deputy attorney general, as noted above, at the request of the CIA director. He boasts extensive experience and success as a federal prosecutor. He is not only skilled but absolutely free of any partisan taint, having prosecuted both Republicans and Democrats in Illinois. His investigation of the CIA leak will be wrapped up after less than two years, without any grand jury extensions. His office has been remarkably free of leaks, which may help explain why he gets none of the fawning publicity that was once lavished on Starr. Critics like Weisberg, admittedly having no concrete knowledge of the evidence presented to the grand jury, suggest that those who revealed Valerie Wilson's identity were not motivated by revenge and committed no serious crime. Their destructive leak, Weisberg suggests, was "accidental," and he finds it impossible to believe that Bush administration officials would intentionally endanger CIA operatives. With equal ignorance of the evidence, Tierney echoes the current Republican spin downplaying the likelihood of any "real crime," a category that apparently doesn't include perjury or obstruction (unless perpetrated by a Democrat). Considering the Bush administration's past treatment of dissenters and adversaries, however, it is entirely plausible that the officials now under scrutiny would have sought to intimidate Joseph and Valerie Wilson -- and that they may have done so recklessly, without thinking about the consequences of revealing her identity. Thuggishness and incompetence are not mutually exclusive. As for whether perjury and obstruction are real crimes, Tierney and other would-be defense lawyers should answer this question. How can prosecutors require witnesses to tell the truth -- and refrain from obstructing justice -- if they are unable to prosecute those who would commit those offenses in covering up their misconduct? In any case, the appellate judges who upheld the subpoenas of reporters Judith Miller and Matthew Cooper believed that Fitzgerald was on the trail of offenders who deserved to be caught. Unlike Fitzgerald's critics, they had seen some of the evidence -- and we should soon find out why they considered the crimes he is investigating to be very serious indeed. Tasked by U.S. President George W. Judy had moved on from her tempestuous tenure as a Washington editor to be a reporter based in New York, but she showed up at this national security affairs briefing. At first she leaned against the wall near where I was sitting, but I noticed that she seemed agitated about something. Midway through the briefing, she came over and whispered to me, "I think I should be sitting in the Times seat." It was such an outrageous move, I could only laugh.
