Back to Astroworld Weblog

I'M BACK

Just a bit of an update, I have Sag ruling my third house and Jupiter at 25 Cancer in my 10th. What else would I have but communication problems. My son came back yesterday and my son-in-law worked 8 hours (god what do you think I will owe them) to get me back up. Both are computer genius', that's what they do for a living (Jupiter, how lucky can I get, well a Plastic Surgeon would be lovely but I will take this.) They possess and used every single tool on the market (even the corporate tools) to erase the virus's because one (a bad one) had gotten past my firewall and it opened me up to a ton of them. Anyway there is one they cannot get, but were able to get me at least up and running this week. My son is building me a new computer because it's only a matter of time before this goes down again. He will rebuild with new hard drive and reload what I have. They set up two different systems on this so I can receive email and get to Astroworld without fear of Astroworld or email being hacked for now. Thank you everyone for the "chicken soup" you sent my way.

Now on to this administration.

John Negroponte stepped down as Ambassador to Iraq (his Sun is 27 Cancer) another late degree Cardinal is being shifted. Don't know why he did it but supposedly it was his bodyguards who fired on the Italian Journalists. Pat C suggested the possibility that Italy might have insisted he be gone and that's as good a possibility as any. It seemed rather sudden to me, however so many things seem sudden and strange to me these days. It doesn't really make any difference why "he" thinks he stepped down, he is coming up on some hard aspects with Saturn conjunct his Sun and immediately setting off his Mars/Saturn/Pluto T-square it's best for him that he step off the world stage.

The only way to honestly predict what might happen to leaders is to track and research as many of the masses with late degree Cardinal or early degree fixed and there is plenty of evidence pointing to problems. It is difficult for leaders of a country because they carry the collective intelligence of the nation, and world wide leaders carry the consciousness of obviously the world. To the extent that we feel good about ourselves and where we are individually relates how we feel collectively toward our leaders. Saturn is going to conj. the US Mercury and as a nation we will feel pretty depressed about things so I would look for some bad financial news (Mercury in the 8th) (some astrologers think it will be the bird flu spreading rapidly)

If we (the people) feel badly about our direction we will look to our leaders for solutions and they don't seem to have any. Our entire Government is so disconnected from the people they don't know how to get back and they don't realize how many minds are hardening toward them the Republicans and the Democrats. The Democratic leadership is making a big mistake trying to go "Republican Lite."

I asked Claudia Dikins her take on the Saturn transit and if I could post it here because she picked up the TSaturn incon. TPluto and this is in part her take.

"I wonder if Bush will somehow get traction on his egregious Soc.Sec reform idea when Saturn stations and picks up direct motion speed? Something brutal and depressing is coming down the pike because Saturn will again conjoin the USA's Mercury (depressing news/thoughts/censorship). It will make that quincunx to T-Pluto at about the same time and then oppose ruthless "capitalism" Pluto in Cap. How will Bush use the aforementioned to scare the by-Jesus out of the small fry? What else is going to get taken away? What will be revealed (Mercury) about how bad it really is with the deficit, jobs, wages, medical insurance, etc.?"

It's hard to tell here in "Pleasantville" how many people are awakening to what has been called the "GWB Potempkin Village" and what Buzzflash referred to as "The People Who Sell Toothpaste are now Selling Politics and Politicians," but there are signs.

The NY Times and Washington Post are openly and on their front page calling attention to the pretend news the WH made available to so called real news casts and they ran them as "real news," the Gannon/Guckert story still hangs over the heads of the White House and Peter Goss is whining. These are perfect examples of Neptune Inconjunct the US Sun and Saturn but that foggy energy is leaving the area and we will be soon looking at a Tsunami backwash returning to shore all the gunk and trash it first swept away.

All the information about the last 100 or so years tells us how far afield we have slipped in our democratic ideals. With the repressive desires of the Christian right we are being shown how far we have slipped in our hopes for religous tolerance. So now we know and are learning the worst of ourselves.

I don't see these revealations to be a bad thing at all. Only by looking at the worst of human nature, including us, can we even begin to transmute the energy into a healing force.

There is no doubt that we are at a crossroad in the world and if we survive, and I believe the human race will surive, there will be a history written of this period and the world (Including America) will be judged not by what our leaders did, but by what the people did. Do not look for or expect change to happen here overnight, it's always easier and faster to destroy than it is to rebuild, but change will happen.

Perhaps it's because I'm a Scorpio but I always think it's a good idea to know who an enemy is, what their agenda holds, I don't think it's a good idea to blindly hit into the dark, so I want to know what's in the shadows, unwittingly this administration Republicans and Democrats are showing us the shadows. We don't have all the pieces or all the players but we have an idea of the agenda. Greed, cruelity, seemingly enslavement of the people (at the very least financially) and a shift in the balance of world wide power with a resultant New World Order and there doesn't seem to be too much room for the old the sick, or "the least of these my brothers and sisters."

Knowing this can help in providing the kind of education and pro-active involvement in our communities to counter the night that is trying to close in upon us.

Morgana and Pallas will be addressing the Eclipse in April, but I am somewhat concerned about the Full Moon in March at 5 degrees Aries/Libra, and Venus is Conj. the Sun. This Moon is in a square to the December 26 Earthquake in Indonesia and Jupiter is frighteningly close to the same spot it was then. Once again we have Venus, Sun, Moon, Venus and Jupiter aligning with Earth in Libra. Astrologers who have spent their entire astrological career tracking weather patterns sees this always as a dangerous weather related alignment, specifically earthquakes.

The Full Moon sets up a T-square with the US Venus and Jupiter. Like Richard Nolle says, stay prepared for weather with lots of water and a few days of food.

This is going to be an iffy month for financial issues, I expect more news of countries pulling their money out of the US.

Mercury goes Retrograde next week (ha, make sure your computers are protected) and don't start new deals just review what's already begun and make sure you check and double check appointments so they don't get confused and with Mercury going Retrograde in Aries watch out for sharp instruments as in kitchen accidents. Aries rules the 1st house and Mercury rules the 3rd house so there may be a few fender benders out there. Mercury, Saturn and Pluto all change directions over the next two weeks and that is always an unstable period so take it easy in your everyday lives.

This marks the beginning of the spring and summer problems for the administration and for the US. Uranus will soon square the US Uranus, Pluto inconjuncts the US Mercury. There will be enough upheaval to go around and with Jupiter and Neptune in a trine aspect, there will be enough to hope for better times.

A friend of mine said today she heard a well known lecture say "hope has nothing to do with yesterday or tomorrow, it has to do with this moment in time." I like to string "hope" together minute by minute because when I break it down like that I find hope in each moment.

The economy Monday, March 14, 2005

Stephen Roach, chief economist at Morgan Stanley, discusses whether the economy is in worse shape than people think.

Then, Sen. John Cornyn, R-Texas, talks about his fight to strengthen U.S. border security and enforce immigration law.

And, Niall Ferguson joins us to discuss his book "Colossus: The Rise and Fall of the American Empire."

Plus, join us for our special report "America's Bright Future." We'll introduce you to an amazing young woman who, at age 15, has already published five books.

Free trade at all costs?
The Bush administration is trying to push the Central American Free Trade Agreement through Congress quickly and quietly. The White House, however, couldn't find the votes for this so-called free trade agreement before his re-election in the fall, and the president likely doesn't have the votes for it now. And that's a good thing for American workers.

Growing fears credit boom may implode

?
Bankruptcy advisers are hiring extra staff amid fears that an end to the global credit boom could spark a surge in business failures in the US and Europe.

Unusually loose lending conditions have encouraged record borrowing by speculative-grade companies, with leveraged buy-outs and debt refinancing on both sides of the Atlantic generating more than $100bn of deals in the past eight months.

But last week's fall in the price of US Treasury bonds, coinciding with signs that bankers are struggling to complete riskier corporate bond issues, has added to a sense of nervousness in some quarters.

Although corporate default rates remain low, some fear the legacy of recent private equity buy-outs and hedge fund investments in distressed debt will be a swath of over-leveraged companies ill-equipped to survive in less benign conditions.

PwC, the largest corporate recovery adviser, said it was hiring insolvency specialists in sectors such as retailing, utilities and telecommunications in preparation for the expected fall-out.

Scott Bok, president of Greenhill & Co, an investment bank specialising in merger advice and restructuring, also predicts the cycle will end with a lot of companies in trouble. “In many of the deals being done today you can foresee the debt restructurings to come in a year or two,” he said.

Here you go:

Slanting Social Security

By PAUL KRUGMAN

Many people involved in the debate over Social Security's future worry that the 2005 trustees' report will be slanted in favor of privatization.

I don't expect to see books that are literally cooked: Stephen Goss, the agency's chief actuary, has an excellent reputation. But it's not out of the question. After all, in 2003 the chief actuary of Social Security's sister agency, which oversees Medicare, was told that he would be fired if he gave Congress accurate information about the cost of the Bush Medicare bill.

Even if the numbers aren't fabricated, however, it's a good bet that they will be presented in a way intended to make Social Security's financial outlook seem much bleaker than it really is.

Why should we expect a slanted report?

First, this administration has politicized analysis across the board, from the Environmental Protection Agency to the Food and Drug Administration.

Second, the White House has been using taxpayers' money to sell its privatization plans in ways that would have been considered out of bounds for any previous administration. The Treasury Department has set up a "war room" to promote privatization; its first three hires were former aides in the Bush-Cheney campaign.

Third, Social Security officials have been playing a clearly partisan role. James Lockhart, the deputy commissioner, has become a regular fixture at pro-privatization rallies - and has been dispensing misinformation. Last week Mr. Lockhart echoed a misrepresentation by President Bush of a statement in last year's report, telling the audience that each year that there are no changes to the program costs "hundreds of billions."

A few weeks ago, Progress for America issued a press release describing Thomas Saving, one of the Social Security trustees, as an adviser and spokesman. This announcement drew some unwelcome attention; the organization now says it was incorrect to call Mr. Saving a spokesman.

But it's still extraordinary to have one of the Social Security trustees associated with a group that is "dedicated to a conservative issue agenda" and has been running ads in support of the Bush privatization plan. (You may have seen the ad that features Franklin Roosevelt; James Roosevelt Jr., F.D.R.'s grandson, wrote to Progress for America to demand that the ad be withdrawn.)

Finally, the Social Security Administration has already begun to slant the information it provides to the public in ways that exaggerate the program's problems. Even the recorded message callers get when the agency puts them on hold disparages Social Security's future prospects.

House Democrats have made a striking comparison between the 2000 and 2004 versions of a public information booklet titled "The Future of Social Security."

The 2000 version was hardly complacent about the future: it presented a chart showing that the trust fund would be exhausted in 2037, and warned that at that point, "Social Security will be able to pay only 72 percent of benefits ... unless changes are made."

By 2004, evidence that the productivity boom that began in the mid-1990's was continuing had led to more optimistic projections: the trust fund was expected to last until 2042. But the caption on the corresponding chart in the 2004 booklet reads, "Current Social Security system is unsustainable in the long run." That's simply false - we can argue about whether it's a good idea to maintain the present system, but there's no question that the basic form of the system could be maintained indefinitely through some combination of tax increases and/or benefit cuts.

What efforts to slant the presentation should we expect in this year's report? A recent op-ed article by Mr. Saving, in which he insists that we face a $74 trillion crisis - 20 times the funding gap estimated in the 2004 trustees' report - offers some hints.

Look for an attempt to conflate Social Security with Medicare. Look for an emphasis on "infinite horizon" estimates, which the American Academy of Actuaries, in a letter to trustees, said "provide little if any useful information about the program's long-range finances and indeed are likely to mislead anyone lacking technical expertise ... into believing that the program is in far worse financial condition than is actually indicated."

The trustees' report has always been a very useful document, providing a wealth of information. But this year, more than ever before, it will have to be read with an eye to the ways it will try to mislead."

70% of respondents to this poll are concerned about obsessive government secrecy. I hope this is an indication of increasing awakening among the public.

I wonder how the Mercury retrograde in Aries will effect thinking and speaking about the war(s)? Especially opposing Jupiter and the South Node in Libra.

Sally, with a Sag third house, I can't help but think that hope would constantly be returning to you. With the Jupiter in Cancer in the tenth, we, the public, are lovingly nurtured by your buoyancy and positive thinking. I think this is one of the best medicines in times of hateful propaganda.

Thanks Sally. glad you're back up. I KNOW how frustrating it is to lose everything onthe computer.

Your mention of the Full Moon of March 25 cued me in to take a look at an astromap of the world set for DC -

the last map I looked at which was the New Moon indicated "movement" out in the Pacific and there were geological reports of little underwater quakes - many of them - in that area - lower Pacific 1/2 the distance from Hawaii to California is the only way I can describe it.

This Full Moon shows lines of Venus/Sun on MC opposing Moon on IC running straight down the same area. I hadn't thought of those as bringing quakes, but if so, there would/should/could be more undersea/ocean quakes in the same area.

The same Full Moon (at 3:58 PM) shows Mars and Chiron on the Descendant crossing from the Los Angeles area down the West Coast of Mexico, as well as affecting the very NorthWest corner of the US. Somehow one doesn't think of acts of nature coming from the Descendant area.

Saudi Arabia, Iraq & Iran area get the Full Moon Venus/Sun on the IC opposite Moon on the MC squared by Pluto on the Ascendant. Certainly that's a known earthquake area, but I'm inclined to think it seems to indicate that the natives of those countries will be restless.

Australia's Northern most area gets Pluto on the MC squaring the Full Moon conjunct Jupiter on the Descendant - an area somewhat diagonally opposite the Dec 26 quake in Indonesia..and a tectonic plate that is connected to those in motion.

Yes Sally, as you say: "Full Moon in March at 5 degrees Aries/Libra, and Venus is Conj. the Sun. This Moon is in a square to the December 26 Earthquake in Indonesia and Jupiter is frighteningly close to the same spot it was then" - it looks like there might be some connected activity..at least connected by tectonic plates being forced to move to release pressure.

I has a momentary awful fleeting thought that the fundamentalists were saying(and believing): See, * is God and he's punishing those mooslims".

Bush orders policy to ‘contain’ Chávez

Senior US administration officials are working on a policy to “contain” Hugo Chávez, the Venezuelan president, and what they allege is his drive to “subvert” Latin America's least stable states.

A strategy aimed at fencing in the government of the world's fifth-largest oil exporter is being prepared at the request of President George W. Bush and Condoleezza Rice, secretary of state, senior US officials say. The move signals a renewed interest by the administration in a region that has been relatively neglected in recent years.

Roger Pardo-Maurer, deputy assistant secretary for western hemisphere affairs at the US Department of Defense, said the Venezuela policy was being developed because Mr Chávez was employing a “hyena strategy” in the region.

“Chávez is a problem because he is clearly using his oil money and influence to introduce his conflictive style into the politics of other countries,” Mr Pardo-Maurer said in an interview with the Financial Times.

Venezuela restocks its arsenal

The US military's senior officer responsible for security co-operation in Latin America has warned of the destabilising potential posed to the region by the Venezuelan government's controversial, and opaque, arms procurement programme.

Hugo Chávez, the president of the world's fifth-largest oil exporter, has begun signing contracts to buy an array of weapons to revamp his defences to thwart what he claims could be outside “aggression”.

Such fears were intensified two weeks ago when Venezuelan officials were alarmed by the presence of US warships and marines near Curaçao, off Venezuela. US officials said it was a routine manoeuvre.

Equipment ranging from 50 latest-generation Mig-29 warplanes to dozens of helicopter gunships, 100,000 Kalashnikov automatic rifles and a fleet of naval vessels, have all been reported as imminent deliveries to Venezuela's new arsenal.

JM, thank you, I just never thought of my third house and Jupiter in that way, and that was so nice of you to say.

I would think the Mercury oppose Jupiter would be a lot of BS and conversation. Again the danger of wild claims about the danger we are in. I've notice over the last 4 years that everytime Mercury goes retrograde for this administration there is a scandal a few days right before the retrograde, then the whole period of time people are talking and it seems as if we might finally get to the truth of the matter and bang, it dissipates when it goes direct.

I will never understand why the people just don't get it, these right-wing think tanks have done a great job of framing the whole debate and moving this country in stealth toward the right's agenda.

This was posted on Salon.

"There's actually a specific episode we're living. Anyone remember the one where Kirk beams down to visit an old friend who set up a colony, only to find out to his horror that the friend based the colony on Nazi Germany?

His friend argues that the Nazis were the most successful political party of all time - they took a ruined country and virtually overnight became a world power. And Kirk's friend wasn't committing genocide, so he counted himself as not being as bad as Hitler. But he did single out a particular minority to oppress on his planet, so Kirk teaches him an important moral lesson and probably cleans his clock.

I've thought for a long time - before GWB took office, even - that the Republicans had the same idea. There were actual Nazis http://www.bartcop.com/nazigop.htm working for the Bush '88 campaign, and the GOP seems to have been following the Nazi strategy since at least the 60s:

Use propaganda as much as possible; keep the Big Lies coming. Keep the country at war so you can shout down dissent. Put business leaders in as many positions of power as possible. Blame foreigners for the country's problems. Encourage citizens to spy on each other.

But the master stroke of the current regime, the genius improvement on the original Nazis, is that instead of demonizing an actual, flesh-and-blood minority like the Jews, they created a fictional minority that they could demonize and use to scare people without going to the trouble of actually carting people off to camps.

During the cold war, it was the communists infiltrating the State Dept., writing spec scripts for MGM, and hiding under every bed. Once the cold was over, the new boogeyman became the America-Hating Liberal. No actual human being falls into the AHL category. No liberal believes what people like Ann Coulter say the AHL believes. Conservatives built the AHL into a straw man they can attack again and again, blame all the country's problems on, and scare the populace about.

The paralells continue with 9/11. The Nazis burned down the Reichstag, blamed a Dutch Communist named van der Lugge, and used this Dutchman's actions to justify invading Czechoslovakia, and curtailing civil liberties at home. I don't think BushCo actually destroyed the Twin Towers - I think they conveniently let their guard down at just the right moment and let bin Laden do his thing. But they certainly used the attack to justify attacking an unrelated country (and counting...) and curtial civil liberties.

As for the big question; when Captain Kirk is going to beam down and clean Bush's clock, here's hoping it happens soon."

On "slanting" social security"

That has already begun. The Shell game.

The advertising now is:

"Saving Social Security For Our Seniors"

the same way the war was - get those WMD -

and it became "Liberate the Iraqi People"...

yup, he liberated them, right out of their homes, their lives , and their skin.

Conspiracy theory: increasing the cost of medicine, lack of flu vaccine, cutting social security benefits, cutting medicare and medicaid is another way to get rid of seniors - faster. Don;t they call it, in the corporate world, "attrition" ?

The seniors and baby boomers who are now becoming seniors remember democracy. They are the generations of troublemakers. And they have to be gotten rid of before a true totalitarian enslavement can be completed.

Just ask Henry Kissinger and David Rockefeller.
They gave speeches on it to the Trilateal & Bilderburg.

I'm not kidding.

Senator Byrd is Correct to Equate Bush With Hitler

The U.S. Senate's senior Constitutional scholar has correctly equated Bush with Hitler, and the usual attack dogs are howling.

But they are wrong, and Americans now must the harsh realities of an increasingly fascist and totalitarian GOP.

Octogenarian Senator Robert Byrd of West Virginia made the equation in the context of Bush’s attack on Senate procedures which might slow or halt his on-going attempt to pack the courts with extreme right-wing fanatics. Byrd said Bush’s moves to destroy time-honored Senate rules parallel Hitler’s ramming fascist legislation through his gutted Reichstag. “Hitler never abandoned the cloak of legality,” said Byrd. “He recognized the enormous psychological value of having the law on his side. Instead, he turned the law inside out and made illegality legal.”

Anti-Defamation League Director Abraham Foxman has played the holocaust card for the Republicans, saying “It is hideous, outrageous and offensive for Senator Byrd to suggest that the Republican Party’s tactics could in any way resemble those of Adolph Hitler and the Nazi Party.

GOP Chair Ken Mehlman has labeled Byrd’s remarked “reprehensible and beyond the pale,” remarks joined by Pennsylvania Senator Rick Santorum. Santorum is best known for equating sexuality between consenting gays with bestiality between humans and dogs.

But Byrd is one of the few in either house of Congress to truly understand the Constitution and to advocate for the Bill of Rights. He points out that like Hitler, Bush is pursuing a strategy designed to win absolute rule by one party and one leader. Hitler’s central slogan “Ein Volk, Ein Reich, Ein Fuhrer”—one people, one government, one dictator—accurately describes the current GOP strategy of Karl Rove, Bush’s Joseph Goebbels.

"FODDER" Pallas, that's what the masses are, fodder. Of course they have to get rid of us. 20 years ago I worked for a Transitional Housing non-profit and I said then if the wealthy would be honest they would admit they want to see everyone who is sick, old, poor, mentally ill, or mentally challanged - dead.

Eugenics, it was a big deal for the Rockefeller's in the 20's/30's, they poured tons of money into the project. They not only see it as their duty to bring on Armageddon, but they intend to design what the 1000 years of peace on earth will look like and who will populate it.

Hello folks. Just wanted to check in and let you all know what's been going on.

First off, thank you Sally for your post. I hope your computer situation gets resolved soon (especially before the Mercury retrograde).

Second, I have been rejected from 5 out of 8 schools. I'm still waiting to hear from American, Tulane, and Wash U. It's gotten to the point where I dread going to the mailbox. I hope I get into American, but I'm starting to think that law school may not be my path at this time in my life. I don't want to write it off completely at this point, but I'm having doubts.

Finally, onto the meaty stuff.

Thursday night at around 9:30pm, I returned home with a friend of mine to play some music with him. About half an hour after I got home, the doorbell rang. I picked up the receiver to answer it but no one reponded. My friend and I walked downstairs to see who rang. What we found was absolutely shocking.

Someone had left a tissue box full of dog shit on our front porch. It was on fire.

As if this was not enough, there was a white Jewish star painted on the box.

No one in my family has any idea who might be responsible for this. Although the flaming bag of shit is an old prank (akin to toilet-papering someone's house), the Jewish star takes it to a whole new level in my opinion.

I called the local police department and filed a report on the incident. They were very responsive and very helpful.

But there's another part of this story. About ten minutes before the doorbell rang, my dog was barking at something, although she was locked in her cage. There are windows near her cage, and I am convinced that she must have seen some people wandering around on our property because she NEVER barks in her cage. The downstairs of our house is full of windows and is very exposed to the outside. Almost anywhere on the first floor, you can be seen from the outside. I am absolutely terrified of being downstairs at night. While I suspect that the incident may have been a prank, I have no idea who did this and I am very very worried when I am alone in the house.

Anyway, that's the thrust of what I've been dealing with in the last few days, aside from working long hours at both of my jobs.

If I don't post much, it's because I am very very busy at work. But I thought you all should know about this.

guido called. he'd sobered up and had this to say about social security. don't look for a change on that * disaster, it stays very comatose. the core group against it, AARP and those over 65 are not going to be convinced by ANYTHING. they are the road block which spells the end for the * SS scam. must be something else. guido will report in when he hits the rockies.

Posted by: mike on March 14, 2005 06:42 AM

dave, that is just outrageous!!! i'll be thinking positive thoughts for you and your family. keep the faith on law school. i'll bet you get au or gwu. hang in there and realize that these people are a joke whether or not they were serious.

Posted by: mike on March 14, 2005 06:49 AM

I occasionally check the "letters to the leaders" at the government site for the senators.
Lately the letters , for the most part, are not supportive of the republican agenda.
Many republican voters seen to be catching on to who in fact these senators are really serving.
It is really quite refreshing.
Judging by their actions I seriously doubt the senators even read the letters.
It's as if, being they serve the robot voting machines,
they no longer have to rely on the votes of the people in order to maintain their positions.

Jonathon and Travieso I am also a March 20/53 b day

Sally,

Sorry to hear about your computer problems. I am not sure I understand your comments re Negroponte and his bodyguards being the ones to shoot the Italian journalist and her bodyguard. Do you suspect Berlusconi was part of a deliberate hit, that Negroponte made it happen on orders from the White House, that it was a horrible mistake, or what? I am really curious about your opinion?! As more comes to light re these people, I really believe you cannot be TOO paranoid regarding their motivations and actions!

Also could you give us some kind of a hint re what might possibly be revealed about the true circumstances of 911 this Spring? Thanks

Posted by: Grizzly on March 14, 2005 11:11 AM

Grizzly,
Did you not read the hundreds of newspapers reporting that special 'checkpoints' were set up on the airport road because Negroponte was going to dinner 'at the airport' the same night Sgrena was shot, Calipari was killed... it was one of his 'special task forces' (translate 'death squads') that assaulted the group. Go two threads back here at AW and 'read all about it' --- there's NO PARANOIA here. Sgrena was taken to a 'military' hospital in Italy and she is being told daily to 'forget about' what happened, it was an 'accident'... some believe Sgrena was not the 'real' target, that Calipari was.

Berlusconi owns MOST of the print newspapers in Italy... (talk about conflict of interest!) He does not however own Il Manifesto, Sgrena's paper. This incident has been used to smear that paper in the US as "communist" so that Sgrena's credibility is NIL. She was writing about the women who were tortured at Abu Ghraib when she was captured, as well as Falluja... the WMD USA used there...

Paranoid? NO... INFORMED...

Black Commentator has an article on how the GOP is using faith-based initiatives and vouchers to provide wedges between Black clergy and their flocks and between usually Democratic Teacher Unions and Blacks... (watch the shell game... it is being employed EVERYWHERE!)

..."Faith-based initiatives and private school vouchers, they theorized, could provide portals directly into the realm of Black grassroots politics. If generously funded and working in tandem, the twin strategies had the potential to subvert a portion of the Black clergy and create a wedge to divide inner city residents from teachers unions and other pillars of the Democratic Party. The synergy of bribed clergy plus a phony voucher “movement” would give the appearance of an authentic conservative “groundswell” among African Americans. Corporate media could be counted on to provide a narrative lifted directly from the position papers of the same think tanks that crafted the faith/vouchers strategy. The stage would be set for the media-hyped emergence of a “New Black Leadership” – Democrats as well as Republicans and “independents” – reflecting the supposedly growing conservatism of the Black middle class and youth."

Hurray Sally! You're back and in GRAND STYLE as well. Something "dawned" on me this morning and it fits into your post. (No surprise there.)

Throughout the past century the power base has intentionally fractured society by perpetuating prejudices. Pat C touches upon this with her post. Dave is experiencing this directly (i'm so sorry, Dave. Will be sending white light to you.)

Just recently someone asked me a question regarding immigration (from Mexico). Did i think it was right that the government was subsidiing workers to come into this country, paying benefits and all to the tune of $9 per hour when very few Americans are making that kind of money. My response was that her anger was misplaced since those who have manipulated this situation are directly to blame. Instead we need to be angry at the fact that our country is being impoverished and fewer and fewer are making a living wage.

Divide and conquer. It is this we've perfected and not a more perfect union.

Taking democracy seriously

President Bush's enthusiasm for democracy's advance abroad challenges us to take seriously the development of democracy in America.

Democracy isn't only about elections, constitutions, and institutions - it's also about the democratic development of the people. If, as William Hastie, the first black federal judge, put it, "Democracy is a journey not a destination," then we haven't arrived and should not self-righteously lecture the world on the topic. America ought to advance democracy again at home.

Karen,

I could not agree with your theory more! They are about conquest, always have been, and that of course includes "us", the little US... the people. Now, they are expanding their MO to the planet. We are at war alright... the People against the would-be conquerors. As Sally says in her opening comments atop this thread... it is good to know one's enemy. Unfortunately, as she states, we are only seeing the shadows... shadow boxing our way, we are. Some of us are awake to that... too many others are asleep to it... not able to wrap their minds around the fact that their 'protectors' are the enemy.

Sally, so glad to have you back and to know you are up and running again... How blessed you are to have not one, but two fellas to help you. You are blessed, as you bless others... thank goodness for you and this comfy sofa in cyberspace. Namaste

Jo,

Thanks for your reply. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on one's point of view) I am living in Warsaw, Poland, so I only have dial-up right now, which is enormously expensive by U.S. standards, so I cannot keep up with everything I would like.

The bottom line though is after reading this site, Daily Kos, the Truth Seeker, Raw Story, Truthout, Smirking Chimp, Buzzflash, Crisis Papers, etc., etc. America (which I left three years ago) seems in general to be one big Stepford
community. If the shit does not start hitting the fan re the fascists and maniacs currently in power within the next month or so, finally waking up the pod populace and the totally pimped out press, I will probably go stark raving mad here and might have to find comfort in the arms of Ambassador Ashe in the U.S. embassy, if Bush dosen't get wind of this and then puts me in Guantanamo for cheating on him with his purported lover of 30+ years (since Yale as roommates).

The Senate passage is not the end of the line. We can still kill this in the House -- for one thing, lots of conservatives and Republicans don't like this bill, either. This is why the people backing it are trying to rush it through so fast: They were hoping that we wouldn't be paying attention.

Bankruptcy Coalition: Monday Action Items

From the Tunesmith link:

Here is the summary.  The House bill number is H.R. 685.  Go to that page and then click "Cosponsors" to view the 83 cosponsors - you might be surprised.  (Darlene Hooley in Oregon?)

The bill has been referred to committee.  According to Thomas, it has been referred to the House Judiciary Committee (some think the Subcommittee on Commercial and Administrative Law) and the Committee on Financial Services.

Finally, a group of twenty Democrats have written a letter to Hastert asking for quick movement on the bill, saying, "It is our hope that the House of Representatives will consider this important piece of legislation in an expedited manner."  In a way this is worse than being a cosponsor because one gets the sense they are worried about the political cost of due consideration.  (Note the signatures that are not on the cosponsor list.)  It's a cynical dismissal of their duties as our representatives.  Check the bottom of this post for the letter and the list of representatives that signed.

There are a lot of implicit action items in that chunk of information, so let me spell them out.

• If there is a cosponsor on this bill that has no business being a cosponsor, contact them immediately and tell them to withdraw.  Note that many of these reps cosponsored en masse on 2/9 - they might not have been paying attention.  Getting someone to unsponsor would be a major coup.

• It is still not clear where the bill is and where it could be frozen.  Find out exactly what subcommittee(s) the bill is in (if any), and report back.

• Go ahead and start contacting the representatives that are in the full Judiciary and Financial committees to apply pressure.

• For liberals - contact the letter-signing Dems that are frightened of due consideration, and tell them what you think.

• Enlist your contacts.

Email is okay - if you'd rather simply contact your assigned Senators and Rep, you can use our tool (information).  Calling is better.  Google a rep's name to find their (206) phone number.  From the comments:

Also effective are postal letters to their district (non-DC) offices, letters to the editor, and prepared questions at in-district 'town hall' meetings (call the district offices and ask about the schedule).

Fax your postal letters to get around the delivery delay.

Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal
This past week, leaders of five mainstream Protestant denominations came together to speak in one voice. Standing shoulder to shoulder, leaders of the Episcopal Church USA, Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, Presbyterian Church (USA), United Church of Christ, and United Methodist Church together condemned the 2006 Federal budget proposed by President Bush as unjust by biblical standards....

"It has much for the rich man and little for Lazarus," harkening to Jesus' parable of the beggar Lazarus at the gate of an anonymous rich man. Lazarus, you'll recall, finds his reward at the side of Abraham in heaven when he dies, while the rich man burns in hell.

In closing, the denominational leaders pleaded with "the members of our churches, of other churches and other faiths, and all whose conscience compels them to do justice to join us in opposing this budget. And we invite them to work with us on economic policies infused with the spirit of the man who began his public ministry almost 2,000 years ago by proclaiming that God had anointed him ‘to bring good news to the poor.'"

I wouldn't say that last part is exactly right. What about Guantanemo,Abu Ghraib, and other prisons and secret holding tanks?

With a Wink and a Nudge, President Bush Is Turning Into a Stand-Up Kind of Guy

A hearty laugh, according to research presented to the American College of Cardiology, keeps you living longer because it juices up the body's vascular system by pumping blood through blood vessels.

Depression and stress can kill you, in part, because blood flow is reduced during mental stress. The researchers concluded that 15 minutes of laughter a day is good tonic.

Since this is a column about politics, I congratulate President Bush for working to keep Americans healthy. After analyzing his speeches, I find that his audiences (except the foreign ones) do not leave without getting their blood circulated.

Even in a somewhat dull speech on energy policy that he delivered in Columbus, Ohio, the other day, Bush managed to make the audience burst into laughter 11 times.

In a session with the Boston Red Sox, there were 14 moments of raucous cheer.

At a White House session on the sober topic of faith-based volunteer efforts, there were 17 moments of spontaneous joviality.

In a speech in Westfield, N.J., on his proposal to overhaul Social Security, Bush elicited 24 body-satisfying cackles from the audience.

How does the president do this? Memorize jokes with clever punch lines? Deliver witty word plays? Raise humorous nuance to a presidential art form?

No. This president relies on simple, failsafe methods anyone can master.

Dave,

Your news is chilling.

It's the beginning. The unconscious message of the administration has been "blame it on the Jews" - see, what troublemakers they are - we're doing all this for them"

And the brain-dead in America get the underlying message and Kristalnacht begins.

Please don't leave your dog outside. They'll poison him.

For $10 you can go to Walgreen's or some of the drugstores or on line to Intermatic, they sell a little buzzer thing to put on windows and doors with sticky tape, 4 to a pack, and they're wonderful, if anything is opened they let out a reasonably loud alarm.

STOP BEING AFRAID. it telegraphs.

Do something to let them know you're not. Put one of those yard signs out " Protected By ABC Alarm Company.. leave a note in chalk or paste
it on the sidewalk...Nazis are c_ _ ck suckers.

Of course...that Aries eclipse is affecting my chart. Wish I was there - I'd let them know which side is up!

"Bush, via Karl Rove, was projected as a moral man who would return a hedonistic America to the simpler virtues of a bygone era. A large part of the American public, unhappy with what they saw as debilitating liberalism, abortion on demand, gay marriage and other forms of moral decay, put Bush back in office," said the Barnes editor.

"Now they have to deal with rampant male whores prancing around the White House in consort with a small army of closet queens, all of whom very obviously have the ear, and the confidence, (and hopefully, that’s all they have) of their ‘moral’ choice for President," said Storch.

Interestingly, TBRNews.org also counts "one Supreme Court Justice, several governors (all Republican) and at least one very prominent televangelist" among those high officials who are saying one thing and doing another with respect to Storch's closet queen issue.

While American citizens watch, unanswered questions remain as Democrats and Republicans ignore young witnesses with clear and credible evidence--refusing to hold each other's legislators criminally accountable for their unspeakable crimes against children.

Sally,
Thanks for your great article. Glad to hear your computer is alive again. My husband and I spent a week getting #^*@) Norton out of our computer. We decided to get a router for our firewall right before your calamity.

Whether the masses have been fodder or a source of indentured servants, the future looks brighter because of the Indigo and Crystal children born within the last 2 decades. They see through the lies! Here is my favorite song off the High School pop rock station:

“They” by Jem.

Who made up all the rules. We follow them like fools.
Believe them to be true. Don’t care to think them through.

And I’m sorry so sorry, I’m sorry it’s like this,
I’m sorry so sorry, I’m sorry we do this.

And it’s ironic too. Coz what we tend to do,
Is act on what they say. And then it is that way.

And I’m sorry so sorry, I’m sorry it’s like this.
I’m sorry so sorry, I’m sorry we do this.

Who are they? And where are they?
And how can they possibly know all this?
Who are they? And where are they?
And how can they possibly know all this?

Do you see what I see? Why do we live like this?
Is it because it’s true that ignorance is bliss?

Who are they? And where are they?
And how do they know all this?
I’m sorry so sorry, I’m sorry it’s like this.

Do you see what I see? Why do we live like this?
Is it because it’s true that ignorance is bliss?

And who are they? And where are they?
And how can they know all this?
And I’m sorry so sorry. I’m sorry we do this.

Pallas commented upthread:

"It's the beginning. The unconscious message of the administration has been "blame it on the Jews" - see, what troublemakers they are - we're doing all this for them"

This fascist administration is using everybody to get what they want. They use the rapture-readies who say once the Jews are used, they will be eliminated... they use Muslims to evoke the terror of 9/11... they use 9/11 and all who perished to excuse everything illegal they do. They use... and they exploit...

As Karen states above, they seek to divide, and thus conquer. Nothing uniting about this group.

Dave, I too am sorry for the hate dumped at your doorstep. We all know it is out there... but we sure don't want it at our door, in our face. Sending light to you. As for the opening... Power corrupts...

During the runup to the invasion of Iraq, there was word on some of 'far out there' websites of a British pedofile ring... involving some of Blair's cabinet, allegedly... I thought it was garbage then. Now, I'm not so sure.

Thanks for the support everybody. The whole thing still freaks me out a little, but I'm going to encourage my parents to install some cheap security cameras around the house.

I don't know if I would go so far as to say that the anti-semitic content fits into a larger pattern, but I think in some sort of obscure synchronistic way, it is. The national dialogue isn't moving in an anti-semitic direction yet, but the prerequisites for it to do so are already there. Flaming bags of shit don't happen in the neighborhood where I live. Especially not with Jewish stars. But I am keeping my senses open. If I start receiving other signals like this, I will make note of it.

In virtually every case of widespread homophobia throughout history, a huge wave of anti-semitism is always right behind the homophobia. I took a course in college on this subject, and there are almost NO exceptions to this rule, even before homophobia was a fear of homosexuals--when it was just a matter of enforcing rigid gender roles. Homophobia has historically been the "testing ground" for anti-semitism. Given all the insanity over the gay marriage issue, I would not be surprised if Jews start being targeted in the near future.

With regard to law school, I haven't given up home yet. I still think I have a good chance of getting into American and Tulane: the former because of my campaign experiece, and the latter because my family has several legacies there. Wash U is a crap shoot. But that's it. Three to go.

I do sense that whatever happens, this is going to be a critical year for me and will likely set the tone for developments that take place when Chiron starts heavily impacting my Aquarian birthsun in 2008.

But when it comes to my faith, nothing can tear it down. I believe in myself and I believe that the universe will unfold as it should.

Sally, et al:
I have a job where once a month I do computer entry for an online astrology site and I also do desktop publishing, providing teaching manuals for students of mine that have gone on to become teachers themselves. Blessedly, I am gratefully privileged to work at home.
I absolutely have to have an operating computer. I have also found that when viruses and spyware have me down, I have to have another computer to get me out of it. So has my son who works under similar circumstances. He spent two days recently recovering from an insidious attack from one of those BHOs (browser helper object) He would have had to junk the computer without being able to get online with his old MAC. Did he have a current back-up? No. Does he now? Yes. A current back-up would have reduced two days to two hours.
Bottom line, it is not self-indulgent to keep two computers operating and to consistently back up one to the other. Then you can just wipe or replace the hard drive and restore back-up and you're off and running.
Regular back-ups!
AVG free!
Spybot!
Update them often.
Scan frequently.
There are other dilemmas that develop with computers, bad drives or motherboards, but virus and spyware attacks are most common.
Give yourself an excuse to get that snazzy new (and likely cheap) computer you've seen advertised and use the current one as your safety net.

Proxy Wars

by Sascha Matuszak
The U.S. is confronting China with a variety of issues this coming week as Condoleezza Rice makes her first East Asia appearance as secretary of state. Most of these issues are old problems – namely human rights, the Taiwan Straits, North Korea, and the trade deficit, among others.

But the recent joint statement after the 2+2 meeting between U.S. and Japanese ministers changed the dynamic of the problems facing Sino-U.S. attempts at finally creating a "strategic partnership." As did North Korea's February admission that they did indeed possess nuclear weapons.

It should be clear by now that a strategic partnership between the U.S. and China is not a short- or even mid-term possibility in East Asia.

"John Negroponte stepped down as Ambassador to Iraq (his Sun is 27 Cancer) another late degree Cardinal is being shifted. Don't know why he did it but supposedly it was his bodyguards who fired on the Italian Journalists. Pat C suggested the possibility that Italy might have insisted he be gone and that's as good a possibility as any. It seemed rather sudden to me, however so many things seem sudden and strange to me these days."

Am I losing my mind? I'm flummoxed!! I googled Negroponte quits and found only two articles, one of which was al-jazeera and had been deleted.

Feb 17th * named Negroponte his Director of Intelligence (new dept. to head up the BrownShirts?) --- Mar 4th was the Italian shooting --- and now we learn that * named Khalilzad (envoy to Afghanistan) US Ambassador to Iraq.

So, did Negroponte quit? Or, did he get promotion to handle the DOMESTIC situation/intelligence? as well as international?

It was his comment last year when told the Congressional Cafe told him the government didn't allow smoking in the Cafe and he said "I am the government." That was Tom's Pendergast moment because he put himself "Above" the law and above his colleagues, the same ones who what to think of themselves as King, they don't want to think of Tom as the only King. I can guarantee you that he took that same arrogant attitude to the floor and his Saturn at 1 Leo has been waiting. Saturn actually isn't welcome or comfortable in Leo, he doesn't really approve of what Saturn considers the Leo show-off attitude.

Tom Tom the Pipers Son just got too big for his britches and he is gone no later than the end of July. And he should be in jail for some of the things he's done because they weren't just a slip of ethics, they were illegal.

GOP senator would block Medicaid cuts

A moderate Republican is trying to strip all $14 billion in Medicaid cuts from the Senate's $2.56 trillion budget, testing the GOP-run Congress' appetite for trimming spending as President Bush has proposed.

As the Senate began debating the budget Monday, Republicans struggled behind the scenes to head off the amendment by Sen. Gordon Smith, R-Ore. Should Smith prevail later this week, it would mark an embarrassing rejection of one of the pillars of Bush's budget and raise questions about how much deficit reduction the GOP can achieve, even at a time of record shortfalls.

"All the talk this year is about cracking down on spending," including on Medicaid and agriculture aid, "and neither is getting very far," said Robert Bixby, executive director of the Concord Coalition, a bipartisan group that advocates eliminating federal deficits. "What's Plan B?"

Uranus has begun its square to US Uranus. The press is rebelling!!! There was the big NYT article yesterday revealing all the dishonest news programs of the adminsitration (paid for by our taxes). And now this:

I heard Sam Donaldson being interviewed yesterday. he compared Bush to a mafia boss and siad if you cross him he will retaliate viciously. It was on CNN around mid day.

Dave - Are you under any Pluto transits along with Saturn? As soon as they pass things will improve. That was indeed a hate crime and it sounds horrifying!!! It also sounds like inspriation to be a lawyer and hold onto your dream. I think when the planets shift, your life will probably open up again.

Mapes' husband on Goodale's Rathergate examination

Letters Sent to Romenesko 3/14/2005 4:38:49 PM

"From MARK WROLSTAD, whose wife, Mary Mapes, was fired in the so-called Memogate controversy:"
Buried, unfortunately, in the daily blur of news-about-the-news is perhaps the first extensive examination of the supposedly independent panel's report on 60 Minutes' George Bush/National Guard controversy. You'll find it on today's Romenesko roundup just before a little treatise on how SpongeBob would do as Dan Rather's replacement.

Former New York Times counsel James Goodale doesn't tackle that one, but he strongly and correctly questions whether the panel's work was complete or fair. He takes on the conventional ignorance that the Guard story was pushed onto the air without proper checking or vetting. In fact, the documents were carefully corroborated through interviewing, document analysis (which the panel mischaracterized) and a "meshing" of the new documents with the known record.

Mr. Goodale is the first to have access to the 40-page meshing analysis that Mary provided to the panel. He and Joe Hagan of the New York Observor are among the media few who have not accepted the panel's conclusions as inviolate.

The public will eventually know the full story behind the Guard story. Until then, truly inquiring minds at least have James Goodale.

Here's the latest channeling from "Blue Star" about 9-11. You may make of it what you will.

http://www.bluestarspeaks.com/bluestar4.html

An excerpt:

You need understand that this particular hellacious venture involved thousands upon thousands of people in order for it to be successful. The plan was diabolical, yet it was known by the countries involved, that it would succeed. There never was only one government responsible for 911, there were 3.

How can this be, you may be asking yourselves. It was quite easy but most definitely time consuming. The plan HAD to be implemented on the date that it was, in the year that it was, with the American President who was in ascendancy. At stake were billions and billions of dollars, the usurping of a country whose people had nothing to do with 911, but that same country was located in a pivotal area to control the Middle East. To control the Middle East is to control the world. Now, the thousands of people involved in this were of all classes, all professions, and various religions. One official laughingly referred to it as "a fan," with all the blades being the "little people," "those dumb m………………. that believe anything we tell them. They and the religious fanatics, the skin heads, they want glory, well by damn they will get it." In fact the religious fervor of certain countries was "fanned" to an all time high with lies of an impending American destruction of their faiths. Many banditos were paid large sums of money to pose as terrorists from other countries. Many "sleepers" from the 3 countries were set into place, their presence was essential for the culmination of the plan. In America as well as in other countries, more yellow journalism written by the media convinced humans of the dangers of the people of Iraq. Not a day passed that more news was not broadcast foretelling of future dangers and possible loss of life by the terrorists. Now I shall tell you a secret. Saddam was not responsible for 911.

Hugo Chavez. He may turn out to be a jerk, but for the sake of the people of Venezuela, I hope not. I found this about him:
Born: 28-Jul-1954
Birthplace: Sabaneta, Barinas, Venezuela

No birthtime, but would anyone be willing to take a look at his chart? He has several planets in Cancer (mid-to-late) and, of course, his sun in early Leo. He has Mars at 25 Sag. And he's in the crosshairs of you-know-who's administration. Whaddya think?

And to Dave: I am enraged that such a despicable thing could happen--and on your front doorstep!! I have calmed down somewhat now, having read your account early today. Sick, sick people! Stay calm and strong and don't let the authorities forget about this. It is a hate crime! I do hope the authorities will be able to identify the cretins responsible and put them behind bars.

Mike, that story you posted on the pedophilia among the DC insiders was by far the most disturbing, disgusting, horrific thing I have ever read. And it takes a lot to make me sick to my stomach. That was truly, breathtakingly horrific.

If the accounts of the abuse are in any way true, then this country is well beyond thouroughly rotten, and as much as I tend to rebound to optimism after absorbing stuff like this, I even question if there is anything that we can or should do anymore. I say hurry up and bring on the US' Pluto Return, step back and watch the whole rotten house come tumbling down upon itself.

I try to avoid labelling anyone or anything as outright evil, but these people truly are that and more. The entire Bush Regime and probably 2/3 of Congress are as rotten as Hitler and the Nazis. The sect of Christianity I was raised up in never quite bought into the idea of an anti-Christ, but George H. W. Bush sure seems like the closest thing to it alive on Earth, today.

*Shudders* I'm still shaking my head about this. Makes me wish I could buy a house up in the hills and get away from this madness. I always had bad vibes about D.C. Now I know why. (Nothing personal, Nancy)

I'm as horrified to hear about what happened to you, Dave. I'm thinking that maybe you should take up self-defense or something similar to it. The chickens are definitely coming home to roost in the US and things seem to be getting uglier with each passing day. I don't know if things are going to explode into open anti-semitism yet, though. At least not while the Jewish Neo-Cons like Wolfowitz and Perle remain in favor with Dimson. Muslims and Gays are still by and large "IT" for hatred in this country. But who knows what's next in a nation where its' leaders molest and abuse the young and innocent?

As Mike Malloy says, watch your back. Take care.

Posted by: NEOBuckeye on March 15, 2005 08:05 AM

Nancy,

Pluto is currently conjuncting Neptune (which I understand to be a "generational" transit), and it is also sextiling my natal Pluto. Saturn in conjuncting my natal Moon. Neither of those long-term transits are particularly volatile.

However, looking at the days surrounding the incident:

The day before, Mars was squaring my natal Moon, the day of was a New Moon, and the following days included Mercury opposing my natal Saturn and my natal Jupiter, and Mars squaring my natal Pluto. That last one sounds like the culprit, and it was probably being assisted by some of the Mercury action in the vicinity.

The rest of my natal transits are relatively mundane until the 29th and 30th of March when the following transits all occur within about 48 hours (and you'll notice that there's some Mercury action that's identical to the stuff above due to the retrograde).

The Sun, Mercury, and Venus are all going to be conjuncting each other over those two days. These conjunctions are all going to be opposing both my natal Jupiter and my natal Saturn (since the two gas giants are nearly conjuncted in my natal horoscope). On top of that, Mars will be conjuncting my natal Venus (which sounds hot!)

The Sun and Venus will both be in my 1st house, Mercury will be in my 2nd house, and Mars will be in my 12th house. My natal Jupiter and Saturn are both in Libra in the 7th house. And my natal Venus is in Aquarius in the 12th house.

Can anyone interpret this? What's all this about?

Posted by: Dave on March 15, 2005 08:23 AM

Dave,

Saturn/Moon transits can bring up issues of rejection and security. The incident might be connected with your feelings of security within your home, which are symbolic of deeper feelings. The school rejections are probably part of it, but that should work out well in the end. You'll go to the right one.

Saturn/Moon can bring up fears, so you can use this time as an opportunity to face them and build emotional strength.
What is happening at home, and how do you feel about leaving? And also, about letting go and venturing into your future? Are you comfortable with these choices. Disappointments and sorrows can be included with Saturn.
A moon in Cancer can be skittish. But Saturn guides with care and wisdom. Give it a bit of time. You'll soon see things more clearly in retrospect.

The good thing about these pitiful souls who do things like this, is that they usually do no worse. So I think you can expect that to be the end of it.

And don't worry excessively about being a little afraid. That's normal for a Cancer Moon. It's part of the gift of sensitivity.

Posted by: jm on March 15, 2005 10:10 AM

And I just want to add, that my last Saturn/Moon transit found me day after day in my dark unfinished basement feeling my loneliness and sadness... in all that gray cement--very Saturnian. I felt oddly safe, though, and felt like I was facing something important, and that I would emerge relieved of some burden. That I would probably grow less isolated. And that I would mature.

The basement is finished now, and it is the brightest spot in the house.

With saturn going direct, and you feeling our collective Cancer anguish now, It can be big, if not volatile.

Posted by: jm on March 15, 2005 10:32 AM

Sally, thank you. I must not be putting in the right key words. I came up with only his biography when I put in his name and the word "quits". Weird.

Posted by: Pat C on March 15, 2005 02:04 PM

Dave, like you Saturn has been toying with my Moon (prior to that my Sun) for quite some time. It will once again direct hit in June. Awareness of your emotional vunerability at this time can lead equally to an awareness of deeper issues connected with how you've been taught to perceive -- the parental conditioning aspect (if you will). At least this has been so with me. It can be quite liberating.

Now, a question to all you AW pros. In the Swiss Ephemeris available for download on Astro.com there is a glif that i'm unfamiliar with. It's inbetween the South Node and Chiron paths respectively. Is it a fixed star? And what is it's "energy?"

Karen,

I believe that is Lilith, the dark moon...

Posted by: Jo on March 15, 2005 02:22 PM

Karen,
There's a ton of info online on Lilith... just google it up... here's one

http://www.expreso.co.cr/centaurs/BlackMoon/lilith.html

..."Astronomically, the Black Moon is an isolated point, a point of neglect, repression, fermentation, and "magical" transformations that belong to a phantasmal, nocturnal, and instinctive/erotic world. It contains all the more instinctual energies (including the atavistic wisdom and clairvoyance, which is dependent on bodily functions) deep within the psyche, of which sexuality is of course paramount, and which manifest themselves in fairy tales and in primitive lunar symbolism: the night, the mystery, the magic, the danger, the secret, the fear, that which is forbidden...

There is a dynamics between the 2 foci, they are seeing each other, like 2 twins, although one is physical and has weight while the other is absent and ghostly. It represents an absence, a ghost, an emptiness, like the emptiness of the womb or an unattainable ideal. Seen dynamically, there will be important differences between men and women... which is part of the dynamics of the 2 foci seen each other and getting polarized, fighting against a ghost and against emptiness, or trying to attain its invisible and ideal part.

One way of seeing its more negative manifestations, thinking on the "neglect" and "emptiness" of the empty focus of the Moon's orbit, is that the Black Moon is a reaction against the "reproductive" and mothering role which "chains" women and leaves them "empty" as individuals. Lilith can be seen as the polar opposite of this kind of woman, which, in turn, is a reaction against all sorts of forces that try to castrate a person."

"Privatizing Jails - Corporate Profits"

There was a movie on an HBO channel a couple of nights ago - a women's prison - where they had the women sewing expensive coats for pennies while the coats sold for $1000.

It was in the form of a docu-movie, a story told by an inmate - black of course.

This has been happening since Bush 1 privatized the prisons - I'm not sure if it goes back to Reagan but I do remember that Wackenhut is a good friend of Bush 1, and they have the contract to guard, build more prisons, and rent out "slaves".
Another sweet deal for bush cronies and contributors.

See if you can catch the movie - late night.

This morning's news..Halliburton has overcharged a known 100 million dollars and some in Congress are demanding every penny back and an investigation of how they got the contract....
( duh - how they got the contract, ha ha)

tUranus square USA nUranus was mentioned by Sally last thread and by Nancy upthread. I would like to add to those comments.

USA nCeres squares nUranus within a few mins., in Pisces, in the 3rd house. In their "Asteroid Goddesses" Demetra George and Douglas Bloch call Ceres (Roman Demeter)the universal mother and ruler of Cancer. Their studies indicate the four asteroids Ceres, Pallas Athene, Juno and Vesta have strong rulership associations with the transitional signs Virgo, Libra and Scorpio... that they function as the active agents in these signs that facilitate the transformation from individual to collective awareness.

Often associated with food and nurturing, Ceres is linked to Virgo. We find Ceres in the USA chart in opposition to it's natural placement Virgo, in Pisces and counterpoint, or Retrograde.

Ceres in Pisces people identify nurturing with compassion, and they receive nurturing through feeling connected to and unified with a reality beyond him/herself. Nurturance is expressed through alleviating the suffering of others - either through empathy or inspiring them the qualities of faith, universal love, and recognition of a transcendent reality. Unconditional love is a strong Ceres theme, as is single parenting. Ceres entered the astrological stage in 1973 about the time of the passage of Roe v. Wade. tUranus is rattling the USA's Ceres' energy, which is natally counterpoint, anyway, in a heavy duty way. Uranus takes about 83/84 years through the zodiac. Last time it was here at this point, was 1922, beginning a period of isolationism for the US and what would later be called 'Republican Normalcy' (1921-33). Wilson was doing battle with Congress for League of Nations. Also during this time Sup Court decided Adkins v. Children's Hospital, finding a congressionally mandated min wage for the District of Columbia is unconstitutional. Warren Harding died in San Francisco, apparently from a heart attack and hyperinflation began in Germany. Several women who would later become important to the 60s movement were born: Helen Gurley Brown, Betty Friedan and Constance Baker Motley, civil rights attorney and first Black woman to become a state senator of NY, later a federal judge. Several women achieved 'firsts': Rebecca L. Felton of Georgia became first woman to serve in US Senate.

In 1942 tUranus squared this natal square (of Ceres/Uranus)finding US military battling Japan in the Pacific and the country dealing with rationing of food and other items, and something called a "Mobilization of the Homefront"... women were entering the factories in the US - think Rosie the Riveter.

In Oct. 1963, when tUranus is opposite this natal square of Ceres/Uranus, Betty Friedan publishes "The Feminine Mystique" and the sexual revolution is underway, with the rise of the "pill". In 1984, tUranus again squares the square. Emily's List is established as a financial network for pro-choice Democratic women running for national political office.

And Maya has a few words on transiting Ceres, which is in Scorpio much of 2005 [and is stationing now, going Rx on the 21st -- powerful energy shifting, along with three planets: Mercury, Saturn and Pluto (Ceres' adversary/ruler):

"She was the signal planet in the Bush Inauguration chart, and thus we see the Scorpio Ceres in action now throughout the world. Mr. Bush, with Pluto on his Ascendant, is Pluto, and he has stolen the daughter, who represents loving nurturing. Ceres in Scorpio is no weak mama. She takes her revenge. Ceres cutting off of the food supply, i.e., nourishment, is endemic now. I could list 1000 examples, but dominant now in the U.S. is the social security fiasco, the systematic transfer of resources to the most wealthy, regardless of who suffers, denial of medical care, denial of help to veterans, the killing fields of Iraq, the torture of prisoners, the cruel onslaught on the earth herself, etc. etc."

US nCeres Rx trines the nSun conj nJupiter, and tUranus is acting on that energy now --- our social vision and exploratory urge.

This month and particularly the next week/ten days is bringing lots of shifting energy... but Ceres/Demeter, the Universal Mother is going to have something to say... and those fascist boyz (as Joanna calls the boys) better mind their backs. You'd best not mess with Mama, boyz... as Maya says, she's powerful now, and vengeful.

Thoughtful post, Jo. (By the way i misspelled glyph and should have known better. I'm wide awake now. ;-)

Your post coincides with research i've been doing on behalf of my daughter who developed thyroid challenges sometime in 2000 shortly after moving to NYC. During this time a potent mix of pesticides was used to pray vast areas of the city including Queens (where she resides)to prevent the spread of West Nile Virus. The effects of the chemicals can, of course, directly impact the thyroid.

Percholate (jet juel additive)has been found in high concentrations in water supplies particularly in the West. It has also been found in the greens, vegetables, fruits at your local food store. This nasty brew also affects the thyroid.

From various research (easily accessed by a google search) thyroid challenges among the population are growing exponentially. Some trace this to the reaction of the body to various pollutants. Our immune systems are functioning overtime to help rid the body of various poisons.

Sorry it took so long to get to this point but i'm wondering, Jo whether or not some revelation regarding the food supply may be exposed during this Ceres transit.

Also found that Lilith (in my chart) resides in Taurus/2nd house with Aires ruling. The description seemed to fit though i'm rather loathe to admit it. (grin)

Pallas,

From my perspective, I see the energy of these four asteroids impacting our psyches as much as anything else... changes in attitudes, particularly regarding their roles in society... and our 'attitude' about food. I was very very young during the rationing, but I believe it had more to do with sugar and nylons and gasoline than anything else... there was a 'sense of sacrifice' because of wartime... but not the deprivation of the depression... in fact, it generated jobs, boosted the US economy and made the US a superpower (which is what those who wanted the war had in mind). You're right though, it does not sound 'promising' --- I continue to remind myself that Uranus is unpredictable, if anything... so, it's really difficult to foresee the 'unpredictable'... I would think that some female leaders are being born in this time, just as they were in 1922, when tUranus last conjuncted US Ceres... and they will be there in the future, when there are again major changes in society... say, 2047 or thereabouts, when tUranus is in Virgo and opposes US Ceres...

Your handle is 'Pallas' - so you must have some affinity for at least one of the goddess asteroids... :-)

Thank you for posting the gold prices... as soon as I win the lottery, I'm collecting in 'gold'...
LOL

Posted by: Jo on March 15, 2005 05:27 PM

I apologize, Karen... to answer your query, yes, I do believe the current shifts in energy involving Ceres have to do with revelations about food supply... Pat C., Pat QofP and Joanna have been giving us news about Monsanto and their control over seeds, the 'sterile seeds' and news on organic seeds... Did you know that among other things, the Iraqis are now forced to buy their seed from Monsanto?

Thanks for bringing forth the reminder of Monsanto's ( also buying up a lot of the organic food companies!) depridations vis-a-vi the food supply. Yes I perceive GM seeds to be the food threat of this time period. One that could permanently affect humankind, if we let them get away with it!!
On rationing in 1942. I was 3 years old at the time & remember clearly............meat and dairy products were in short supply as well. My Aunt & Uncle raised chickens in their back yard; I remember plucking the quill ends of the feathers out of the skin, for my Mother, as well as scattering feed for the chickens with my Aunt and mixing the yellow food coloring powder into the white oleo as a butter substitute. Vegetables were no problem as Seabrook Farms, ( in my hometown ) canned & froze them for the entire world.
I do think we are in for problems due to the price of fuel. We have been improvident in clustering all our food growing regions, in areas far from the population that consumes the food. South Jersey is virtually a bedroom community now, when it has the third longest growing season in the country.
Astrological footnote! Ceres (in Gemini) was in my 12th house at birth. It crossed the ASC. in 1945....as the war was winding down! ( That is if the asteroids progressthe same as planets.a year for a day!)
Also t.neptune is sitting right on my n.lillith, and squared to my n. sun in the 12th. If my posts have been inappropriate at times I appologize...it's one HELL OF a ride I'm on!

Farrout,
Don't ditch Johnnies Seeds..WORK with them. The transfer of power JUST happened. Its too soon for this years seeds to be affected!!!!
TO REPEAT..MONSANTO BOUGHT OUT SEMINIS SEEDS WHICH SUPPLIES Johnnies, Fedco and a lot of other companies. We need to help these companies deal with the problem not just abandon them!
On thyroid.............I did some research a few years ago trying to solve my own thyroid problems. I bought a research tract from a Dr. Broda Barnes in CT., who was on the outs with the AMA at the time. His research is now accepted in the mainstream, thank goddess! He theorized that thyroid problems proliferate through intermarriage as well as a result of environmental problems. Hypothyroid people attract each other, and produce hypothyroid children.

Farrout,
All my life I have been an athlete and then my thyroid went whacko and I resembled a huge Idaho spud. Bone spurs not only mashed my spinal cord but also interfered with the distribution of thyroid hormone (even though they had me on huge high doses). Turns out, that the acupuncturist and diet changes are reversing not only the calcium spurs (arthritus c5-c7 vertebrae) they nolonger show up on mri's, but my thyroid is behaving normally now and the spud factor is reversing itself. So might want to check for neck injuries, I've lost count how many times I've gotten smushed playing sports, surfing, etc.
Course these days I'm just recovering my stamina to play again.

No thyroid problems on either side of my family. But yes, Apache and Caucasian.

Hijacking Scare Brings Jets to Northeast

Published: March 15, 2005

The North American Aerospace Defense Command scrambled two F-16 fighters from Atlantic City, N.J., on Sunday afternoon to patrol airspace in the Northeast after an airline pilot and two other pilots overheard transmissions indicating a hijacking, officials said on Monday.

The Coast Guard also received reports of aircraft with mechanical problems, but the reports included tail numbers for planes that did not exist, officials said.

The location of the planes was not clear. "I'm hearing Boston, I'm hearing New York, I don't know where," said Maj. Douglas Martin of the Canadian Army, a spokesman for Norad. He would not say exactly where the fighters, which were from the New Jersey Air National Guard, patrolled.

Major Martin said Norad had flown about 40,000 sorties since Sept. 11, 2001, about 2,000 of which were diversions from planned air controls, or planes that were gathered in a scramble.

A spokeswoman for the Transportation Security Administration, Lauren G. Stover, said of the radio broadcasts: "There were a few things that were communicated. The overall transmissions were distress-related."

Ms. Stover said that her agency coordinated with the Federal Aviation Administration, Norad and other agencies and used the occasion as an exercise to practice its response. She said the government had carried out "a serious response to a noncredible threat."

RAMADI, Iraq - The deputy commander of the Iraqi army in western Al-Anbar province was shot dead by US troops at a checkpoint Tuesday night, a police officer said.

"The US forces opened fire at 8:00 pm (1700 GMT) on Brigadier General Ismail Swayed al-Obeid, who had left his base in Baghdadi to head home," police Captain Amin al-Hitti said.

"They spotted him on the road after the curfew, which goes into effect at 6 pm," the officer said in Baghdadi, 185 kilometres (142 miles) west of the capital.

No immediate reaction was available from the US military.

Monsanto suing farmers over piracy issues << back
Published: 13 January 2004
Source: Associated Press/Paul Elias

SAN FRANCISCO - Monsanto Co.'s "seed police" are constantly prowling the nation's farm belt in search of growers using genetically engineered seeds they haven't purchased.

They found Mississippi soy farmer Homan McFarling in 1999. He said the company is now demanding he pay $1.2 million for allegedly "pirating" its technology. In doing so, Monsanto is attempting to protect its business in much the same way the entertainment industry does when it sues underground digital distributors exploiting music, movies and video games.

McFarling, 62, is in court for saving seed from one harvest and replanting it the following season, a revered and ancient agricultural practice. But saving Monsanto's seeds, genetically engineered to resist weed sprays, violates provisions of Monsanto's licensing contracts with farmers.

McFarling is hardly alone on this new frontier of piracy lawsuits, a legal assault critics say is radically altering farming habits around the world.

"My daddy saved seed. I saved seed," said McFarling who still grows soy on the 5,000 acre family farm near Tupelo. "Monsanto is ruining farming."

Have to say I AM THRILLED! Orange is Clemson University color --- Graham went to University of South Carolina... so, orange might not be the best color (they're arch rivals)... but roses definitely!!!

A Tutorial in Greed
Lesson of new bankruptcy bill is that campaign cash is worth more than family or religious values.

March 15, 2005 – Because they keep revamping and expanding the SAT, I'll propose a new economics puzzler for the test makers' consideration.

Question: What is the difference between a loan shark and a banker?

Answer: Not much. The former uses hired thugs to enforce repayment from the debtors; the latter employs the feds as paid muscle.

Even better would be to make the fast-tracked bankruptcy bill – already passed by the Senate and expected to be approved soon by the House and signed by president – the subject of one of the test's new critical thinking essays. Teens could trace the correlation between the massive campaign contributions of credit card companies and banks and the imminent passage of legislation making it much more difficult for the hopelessly indebted to find the kind of relief offered by enlightened societies for millenniums.

Of course, not many high school students have been taught the central place of class warfare in modern American politics, but the bill would provide an excellent classroom case study in the political economy of greed. Consider it an updating of that old staple of government classes, "How a bill becomes a law." It would accurately place the role of corporate money in clear ascendance over the interests of regular people.

All we've been hearing the past few years is security, security, security(coupled with terror, of course).
Now with Merc retro squaring the Saturn station in Cancer, plus a two month station of the nodes at 22 degrees, also squaring that Saturn, are we about to really learn something about security? It's Aries, so who is in charge? Is George Bush responsible for our security, or are we, the people. Each individual. Are we locked in battle defending our right to security? I am going to get my house in order.

Very wise JM. There was a bio terror scare in post offices in the DC area today, and now the bird flu threat. Remember the lack of flu shots for Americans?

Then there is this.

"Italy is to begin withdrawing its troops from Iraq in September 2005, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi has said.

He told Rai state television the pullout would take place "in agreement with our allies".

Italy has 3,000 troops in Iraq - the fourth largest foreign contingent. "

***jo***, i had a mars square my n. moon in the 10th and it's been a huge energy drain. hence i'm working hard at work and neglecting my important duties on the internet. i'm blown away by what graham did. teaming up with byron dorgan,D,ND is brilliant. dorgan is THE smartest senator on the budget (last uber smart person was childs of FL, actually saw him do a markup, amazing). i think graham was sticking it to * big time, and not just on SS. he was pissed about the prison torture but lacked the ability to push it (absent a chairmanship in that area). this is a nice payback. and, what do you think greenspan is thinking today after his prediction of cuts. outdone by a south carolinian.

speaking of greenspan, here is my formula for understanding the "wizard"

G - R = 0

Greenspan minus Robert Rubin (Clinton Treasury chief) equals Zero accomplishments. think about it -- Greenie suckedk under *I. he was completely unable to do anything from 88-92. the fed policy was very helpful in the clinton years, WITH RUBIN. after clinton, Greenie is a big fat negative number. he's worse than ever.

Good for him...

Thanks for checking in...

This is not a congress, it's an aberration:

"Last year, the ethics committee admonished DeLay on three matters: a 2002 fund-raiser that it said gave the appearance of donors getting special access; enlisting the help of a federal agency in a Texas political spat; and offering a political favor to a member in an effort to win passage of a prescription drug bill.

Since then, in a shake-up of the ethics committee, the chairman was replaced and two donors to DeLay's defense fund were placed on the panel.

The full Republican-led House in January changed its rules to make it more difficult for the ethics committee to initiate an investigation.

Bernie Ebbers of WorldCom has been found guilty on all 9 counts of fraud and could be sentenced to 85 years in prison. (Aug. 27, 1941, Edmonton, Canada) One news report stated his "aw shucks rags to riches defense didn't make it for the jury" Mr. Ebbers Mars is in a late degree Cardinal sign (23 Aries) Another example of Saturn's sweep through Cancer. Saturn is the ruler of Capricorn, co-ruler of Aquarius, and he isn't happy in Cancer. Most of all, in Cancer Saturn takes exception to anything that threatens the security of a home or nation that Capricorn has carefully built. It isn't going to be a propitious time for greed. This bodes ill for Ken Lay of Enron with his late degree Aries planets and bad news for Halliburton.

It doesn't matter who we are, Bernie Ebbers, the government, George Bush and friends, Sally McDonald, Saturn holds all our feet to the fire and gives us the opportunity to clean up our sloppy act or pay the price. How high a price depends on how sloppy we've been and how much advantage we have taken of others for our own self-serving interests. It could be as simple as not taking care of our teeth and the ensuing problems that causes for us, to as high as stealing from the people watching it all be stripped away from us.

I'll take the dentist over having to pay for being corrupt. If this government and the leaders who might be steeped in corruption aren't hearing the words "for whom the bell tolls, the bell tolls for thee" ringing in their ears, they soon will and that goes for both parties.

After Saturn finishes sweeping up "his" house of as much dirt as he possibly can, he is going to move forward into Leo. As I stated earlier, Saturn in Leo isn't any happier than he is in Cancer, he does not approve of the mis-use of Leo energy as in grand-standing.

The coalition of one grasshopper is certainly not the plague of locusts we were warned about.
The Italian pullout is absolutely fascinating. Kind of like a Uranian surprise...eh?
There is so much behind it. Not only is it abandonment of our cause, but it hints of battles with our European allies, which is what I thought would happen. We've definitely stepped in a pile.
I still think Iraq is the vortex. The beginning and end to the PNAC dream. I think they call it, "Building America's Defenses", and it looks like Saturn has some other ideas about our security. De fence around dis country is more like it. we are trapped in the prison of Iraq, while Europe has united even more and gained strength, the Middle East is uniting in a Shiite coalition of the very willing, South America seems to be gelling, Russia is doing great in the weapons business, and Asia is rockin' economically.
Looks like the empire building has ground to a halt.

Speaking of the Middle East, I bet this Delay thingy will be the straw that breaks the camel's back.

I hear that sweet clicking sound of dominoes falling.

So there's this odd little problem I'm having. I was wondering if anybody else was experiencing the same thing.

Whenever I see the word "delay" in a newpaper headline, I automatically think of the Congressman even though the word is being used as a noun or a verb. And likewise, whenever I see the word "DeLay," used in reference to the Congressman, I'm thinking of the noun or the verb.

It's an odd little quirk. Does anyone else have this problem? If so, do you feel that there is a deeper meaning to this peculiar phenomenon?

Hey everyone, this one looks like a real doozy...

Let's call it: "Enron meets Big Oil" And yes, that's about as bad as it sounds.

--

Running on empty
The leading energy analysts who foretold Enron's demise have an alarming new claim: The world's major oil companies are almost tapped out.

- - - - - - - - - - - -
By Robert Bryce

March 15, 2005 | Four years ago, the analysts at John S. Herold Inc. were the first to call bullshit on Enron. On Feb. 21, 2001, three Herold analysts issued a report that said Enron's profit margins were shriveling, the company had too few hard assets, and its stock price was way too high. Less than ten months later, Enron filed for bankruptcy.

Today, the analysts at Herold -- a research-only firm that issues valuations on several hundred publicly traded energy companies -- are making predictions even bolder than their call on Enron. They have begun estimating when each of the world's biggest energy companies will peak in its ability to produce oil and gas. Herold's work shows that the best minds in the energy industry are accepting the reality that the globe is reaching (or has already reached) the limit of its own ability to produce ever increasing amounts of oil.

Many analysts have estimated when the earth will reach its peak oil production. Others have done estimates on when individual countries will hit their peaks. Herold is the first Wall Street firm to predict when specific energy companies will hit their peaks.

Since last fall, Herold has done peak estimates on about two dozen oil companies. Herold believes that the French oil company, Total S.A., will reach its peak production in 2007. Herold expects 2008 to be critical, with Exxon Mobil Corp., ConocoPhillips Co., BP, Royal Dutch/Shell Group, and the Italian producer, Eni S.p.A., all hitting their peaks. In 2009, Herold expects ChevronTexaco Corp. to peak. In Herold's view, each of the world's seven largest publicly traded oil companies will begin seeing production declines within the next 48 months or so.

Bush: Wolfowitz to World Bank

Posted by: wv on March 16, 2005 03:34 PM

M.,
Good question. Apparently it is customary for US to select the head of World Bank --- here's an link to their website... reads as if they designed it as educational tool for middle school children. I checked "about us" and there are a number of questions... all answered very succinctly. According to their website and info, the US runs the World Bank, EVEN THOUGH it is designed to run like a coop... LOL, huh. US owns only 16.41% of shares, but rest of the countries are willing to lay down and allow US to make all decisions.

http://www.worldbank.org/

"Who Runs the World Bank Group?"
The World Bank is run like a cooperative, with its member countries as shareholders. The number of shares a country has is based roughly on the size of its economy. The United States is the largest single shareholder, with 16.41 percent of votes, followed by Japan (7.87 percent), Germany (4.49 percent), the United Kingdom (4.31 percent), and France (4.31 percent). The rest of the shares are divided among the other member countries."

I guess "might" makes everything right, huh...

I have faith in Tom DeLay - Bush

Posted by: wv on March 16, 2005 03:35 PM

I'm thinking there might be some good to be garnered out of this. First of all, all eyes will be on the Wolf now and secondly, maybe with this act of hubris, they are finally flying too close to the sun. After all, the coming problems are very likely involved with money (mercury). We may have reached the point where what looks dastardly may be the final domino being put in place. They are, after all, now positioned to fall. Thanks Jo for the info, 16% indeed!

Bankruptcy: Wednesday Action Items

Today is House-targeting day, and we have a very cool tool to help us.

Congresstrack.org has developed a tool to enable groups to track where congresscritters stand on particular issues. CongressTrack's creator is allowing the tool to be used by anyone (whether conservative, liberal, or anything else) for the bankruptcy bill.

I've set up three trackers for groups of representatives in the House. I have several categories for the representatives, and they are all currently in the "Uncontacted" category.

The first group is The Cosponsors. It would be a real accomplishment to get someone to unsponsor, the sort of thing that could start feeding on itself. If you go through the list, you might find some real surprises. I am personally very surprised to see Rick Boucher (D-WA) on that list; one of his specialties is internet law and he's always been on the side of the little guy in those battles. There are six other Democrats on the list.

The second group is The House Judiciary Committee. It's likely that many of these are definitely voting against the bill, but they need to be contacted to make sure.

The third group is The Democratic Letter Signers. I just don't understand these people; many of them are asking for a quick turnaround, but have not endorsed the bill. It would be progress if we can get any of these folks to promise to vote No.

Action: Click the above links to find the representatives, and then click their names to get their contact information. This tool makes it very easy to contact them.

Then, tell us what you find out. It is not sufficient to simply give them a piece of your mind. Make your case, and then ask where they stand. If they are one on of the lists, ask them if they will withdraw. Ask them how they are going to vote, and let us know if they are voting yes, no, or are thinking about it. I will then be able to go to the pages for the campaigns and update the status for the representatives in question.

I'll be out part of the day - I have a weekly trip to Seattle to take a film orchestration class - but will keep tabs on comments and status. On Thursday, we'll catch up with the state of things around the blogosphere.

My economy guru, Stirling Newberry who blogs and sometimes writes a diary for dKos has the skinny on * and Social Security (my bias is showing!)...

dKos is having server problems, started Monday I believe --- ahhh, Uranus square Uranus? or what?

Anyway this is the gist of his diary at link below:

"Social Security isn't a program - it is a revenue stream. And Bush/Greenspan/Rove and the rest need that revenue stream to prop up their devaluation game. They must have it. Not because Social Security is in trouble - but because it is not in trouble. The money from SS is pouring in faster than benefits are being paid out. That is the last pile of money on the budget - Iraq has run out as a funding source, they aren't getting another war, there is nothing to cut in nondefense discretionary spending. If they were worried about budget problems - they would be going after Medicare.

The real fight is over the global monetary system, and who controls it. Social Security is on the menu because Bush has run out of other places to borrow money. So, instead of offering unsecured debt (fed prints money), or debt secured by a hostile take over of Iraq (oil flows), he now has to find a way to tap Social Security in order to offer a secured loan - raid the revenues by cutting benefits, and borrow that money now."

Exceptionally busy day!!!

I only heard the wrap-up of Bush's press conference. He said something telling at the end and to the effect that the air was rather suffocating in the newly redecorated press room. Perhaps this slip indicates the coming stranglehold. ;-)

What was your take, wv? Did you see it in its entirety?

This on peak oil delivered to the House just recently: http://www.energybulletin.net/4733.html

Though rather lengthy, it's informative. I admit i skimmed through. There are parts where i disagree entirely with the speaker on how to rectify the coming challenge. I'm deeply saddened that most systems including solar and wind are prohibitively expensive AND that there are few residential help programs available but an abundance of programs for commercial purposes. Further i'm clueless why each and every home is not fitted with at least one solar panel -- each of us providing energy. But again, i'm an idealist and this is certainly impractical from our current need to elevate business above human need.

Morgana, i'll ask my daughter about a neck injury. Though when i sent her the article regarding pesticide spraying in Queens, it resonated with her.

Thinking about Sally's article, i had this flash related to a past experience with a Capricorn Moon person who could not relate to this emotional Cancer Moon person, for that matter he was unable to relate to anything on an emotional level. Therefore, i was wondering how heavily the Moon (in a person's respective chart) might play in today's climate. Are there an inordinate number of "players" on the scene with a Capricorn Moon? My theory is that there may be allowing them to pursue an agenda void of empathy.

WV,
That Steve Bell cartoon you linked to above was wild! The nation has an article on Phony Tony and his 'trials'. Of particular interest to me is the following info on the Stop the War Coalition and their planned demo on 3/19 - anticipated to be bigger than the one two years ago! It seems Moveon has moved on from the war... and most leftists are suggesting we have to stay the course... can't leave Iraq, can't leave it to chaos... well, chaos is in the eye of the beholder, much as truth is --- the 'course' seems to be straight to hell, but I guess we'll stay it... while the rest of the world protests... wonderful to be an American, isn't it?

"The news came as Britain's national Stop the War Coalition was busily organizing mass demonstrations against British involvement in Iraq to take place on March 19. Tony Benn, a former Labour Party Cabinet minister who has split with Blair on the war issue told me, "This will be one of the largest demonstrations since the war began, perhaps the largest, and it will confirm that their remains a hearty opposition to Tony Blair's decision to follow George Bush into war."

Karen,

My late Mom had a Capricorn moon... she was not devoid of emotion, she simply held it in... the appearance was of chill... it took me decades to realize that... as I on the other hand cannot play poker because you have merely to read my face to see the cards I hold! And I cry at the drop of a hat... or I did until my progressed Moon moved into Capricorn for the second time in my life... and I had more understanding of my Mom...it happened at the time she was diagnosed with Cancer and stayed the length of her illness. I bless that Capricorn Moon, it was the thing that got me through the ordeal, without falling apart. My youngest sister also has Moon in Capicorn... she too keeps things close to her chest... but she feels deeply.

The machine apparently sensed the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre four hours before they happened - but in the fevered mood of conspiracy theories of the time, the claims were swiftly knocked back by sceptics. But last December, it also appeared to forewarn of the Asian tsunami just before the deep sea earthquake that precipitated the epic tragedy.

Sally and all,

my first thought on the Bernie-World Com thing is
- and so where is Kenny Boy Lay's payback? With Ashcroft & Gonzales at Justice and the dimbot protecting him - nothing seems to be happening with the worst offender, Enron.

You do know that Enron is still in business in parts of the world? And I'm wondering if Rice's announcement today that an oil pipe-line from Iran to India is a bad idea has anything to do with the fact that Enron has an energy contract in India that is raping the people.

I tend to play connect the dots.

Wolfowitz to World Bank? Does Congress have to
confirm it???? I hope so, because they grilled him on where the lost billions were, and he didn't know - they were furious at his stonewalling.

BUT - this is very unfair - as Sally said...the
dentist.....I have been doing extensive dental work for years on my teeth...and it turns out they were BAD dentists....and just yesterday an abcess flared up under a cap - so one side of my face is swollen and lips crooked...boo hoo hoo.

Now if you're doing right Saturn is supposed to confirm it, reward - dammit - those dentists should be paying - NOT ME!!!!!!!

MORGANA

I'm interested in your mention of spurs growing out of the ruptures and your healing with accupuncture.

The doctors want to remove C-3 to C-7, ruptured from an auto accident 12 years ago (and my trusted chiropractor who sent me to the surgeon, says absolutely don't do it).

But the spurs growing out of both left and right sides of the neck have now numbed part of my left palm and pinky (actually 3 fingers were numb, couldn't feel them but the chiropractor got feeling back in two and part of the palm)

Logic is telling me that as the spurs grow in the future....well you know .... and I negate that thought!

So can you get in touch with me through Sally who has my e mail ? - if accupuncture really diminished those spurs, or whatever else you took or did, I certainly want and need the advice.

Thanks Morgana.

Jo, before posting my Capricorn Moon comment i had hoped i would offend no one since this was not my intent. And, i hope i didn't offend you and deeply empathize with your loss. My own mother's Scorpio Moon played out through vindictiveness that was none too pretty though i long ago forgave it. Believe i needed to have stated that a Cappy Moon could exacerbate (through aspect and contact) that distinct coldness that seems to flow through the blood of all the aforementioned players including Rove, Wolfowitz, Cheney, Delay, et al.

Pat C, Jo, Pallas18--
I think the Neocon(vict)s DESPERATELY want to get one of their own as head of the world bank to shore up the dwindling dollar--I mean, c'mon, wouldn't that be their main purpose in such a move(that plus the inevitable extortion/bullying of the European Union, etc. or anyone else against whom their "diplomacy" didn't work---this would give them an extra economic edge against the rest of the world)? I think that's why they're flailing about to get him in there.....

Hey Sally,

So sorry to hear about your computer woes! I can relate, my MAC has been in the shop for a week and it will be another two before the part arrives to fix it. Their best guess is that the "power supply box" needs to be replaced. All I know is that it silently transformed from being cutting edge technology to abstract sculpture.

I had no idea that Negroponte stepped down (see what happens when your computer is taken away from you?!?) That's an amazing thing for one of Bush's prized sycophants to slither off into the darkness, exit stage left. Let's all visualize that more will be joining him soon.

Thanks for the article, it's always so nice to read your thoughts of both the world stage and the microcosm. You're all in my thoughts and I wish you the best.

Jo...my mom, who is still alive and almost 96, was born with moon in Aries conjunct Saturn....(echo-ing my own sun conj. Saturn in Gemini)...so she is sort of a Cap moon person also. My grandson, who was born 2 days after my mother's 95th birthday is a Cap moon person also...I think 'stability' in his case, but depressive emotions in my mother's case. My daughter is not a cold person, so I reject that characterization of Cap moon people having cold mothers. I do think conservative expression of emotions might work much better...

Pat C...do I need to give you some info? I have been so incommunicado recently ... Sally's and I are on the same page....I have Scorpio rising AND the same Jupiter at 25 Cancer. But my computer didn't crash....I just had trouble getting everything working again after my move.

Sure thing. I"ll drop Sally a note.

Posted by: Morgana on March 16, 2005 06:46 PM

Garry,

"I think the Neocon(vict)s DESPERATELY want to get one of their own as head of the world bank to shore up the dwindling dollar--"

could be - but - what if they no longer care about the dwindling dollar? You know that Pappy and Carlyle bought a Korean bank a while ago right?

And that the bigboyz with big bucks have converted to Euros and Gold right?

So, the other side of the coin (unintended pun) is
that since dumbot has raided the US treasury, what if he can get another chief neocon in control of The World Bank, he and the multinationals can raid that moneypot....dictate terms to every country in the world - and that I think is the final piece being put in place and completion of their New World Order.

Quotation from David Rockefeller, founder of the Trilateral Commission of which Pappy was also an original member:

"We are on the verge of a global transformation. All we need is the right major crisis and the nations will accept the New World Order."

"We are grateful to The Washington Post, The New York Times, Time Magazine and other great publications whose directors have attended our meetings and respected their promises of discretion for almost forty years. It would have been impossible for us to develop our plan for the world if we had been subject to the bright lights of publicity during those years. But, the world is now more sophisticated and prepared to march towards a world government."

"The supranational sovereignty of an intellectual

elite and world bankers is surely preferable to

the national auto determination practiced in past

centuries."

David Rockefeller, founder of the Trilateral Commission, in an address before that organization in June of 1991.

Henry Kissinger, employee and tutor of David & Nelson Rockefeller in the 40's and 50's.\

Henry Kissinger in an address to the Bilderberger meeting at Evian, France, May 21, 1992.:

"Today Americans would be outraged if U.N. troops entered Los Angeles to restore order; tomorrow they will be grateful! This is especially true if they were told there was an outside threat from beyond whether real or promulgated, that threatened our very existence. It is then that all peoples of the world will pledge with world leaders to deliver them from this evil. The one thing every man fears is the unknown. When presented with this scenario, individual rights will be willingly relinquished for the guarantee of their well being granted to them by their world government."

"Yes, many people will die when the New World Order is established, but it
will be a much better world for those who survive."

Henry Kissinger Evians, France - 1991 Bilderberg Conference

********************

Now tell me that it wasn't generous of David Rockefeller to sacrifice the Two World Trade Center buildings that his brother Nelson built as a monument to himself.

Now tell me that it was a complete surprise and that this New World Order government had nothing to do with it.

Posted by: M. on March 16, 2005 07:19 PM

Jo, your great insight was much appreciated. I had just hoped i had not offended you and obviously i did not. Whew!

Garry, Joanna and all. The plans of * and co-conspirators are becoming more transparent daily. However, that does not lessen the deadly outcome of their intentions. I stated some time back that i believed the push to privatize social security was a ruse to rob it. Now with Wolfowitz in the running for the already stingy World Bank we have the makings of another coup.

Add to this toxic brew is the coming pandemic. More info today on http://www.rense.com and other sites as well. There are several things that bother me about this. Though it can be argued that it's "time" for another pandemic, medical advances made since the last scourge could all but wipe out the virus in its current stage BEFORE it begins mutating. Since this isn't happening we can expect an outbreak. It will induce panic and opportunity to exact even more secret deals behind sealed doors not to mention the millions and millions of families touched by the horror and death of such an outbreak. Problem of social security SOLVED. Problem of peak oil SOLVED.

See me banging my head on the table.

Does having nJupiter at 25 Cancer get me into the boo-hoo club?
What about needing $2,000+ dental work and having a buggy computer?
With nUranus at 24 degrees Cancer it’s a certainty!
With nNeptune at Libra 26r I’m confused about how to pay for it all!
I must say it figures about dental work and slow moving Saturn and Jupiter
Because fillings get loose after ten to fifteen years and need replacing.
Aside from greedy dentists out to make a buck, you have to avoid mercury
amalgom fillings since that is a neural toxin poisoning your body.
I finally found an honest, mercury-free, dentist in Seattle, but can’t afford him!

Dumbot's Press Conference this morning .

He complained there wasn't enough "oxygen" in the room and abruptly ended the conference leaving the room.

feeling you can't get "not enough oxygen" is very descriptive of a heart or an angina attack.
Silent angina squeezes but you can't feel it, and the oxygen to the brain is being cut off...they feel like they can't get air and might pass out.

Transiting Saturn in his chart at 20 Cancer was moving to the exact midpoint of his natal Sun at 13 Cancer and natal Saturn at 26 Cancer.

Appears he is having heart trouble.

Pallas and Karen....those two postings describe it all...although reading the Unauthorized Bio of GHWB*** which I posted last thread pretty much tells you all of it...c. 1990. All coming true, so the Kissinger/Rockefeller quotes work well with all of it.

Soylent Green, we are...

Did you read the stuff posted by Pat C. on the Princeton Egg and Global Consciousness project?

I have, in my life, experienced knowing things would happen before they happened...it is more common than believed, both in 'knowing' and in dreaming. The dream I had of the river of bodies last August (which I thought was Iraq war stuff), massive rivers of bodies in a very yellowy hot climate, but drowned bodies everywhere, was actually the Indonesian nightmare....it fits perfectly.

I think that is why I get so sick just when all these horrible things happen. It is the global consciousness being channeled down. Very difficult to handle.

So we are here while the veils are dropping....ugly stuff. Raise our consciousness, and we raise everyone elses....

Posted by: judigemini on March 16, 2005 08:02 PM

I checked Dan Froomkin's column... he sheds a different light on the press room:

"During the renovation, reporters could be moved to workspace in the Old Executive Office Building. The work is expected to start in August, when President Bush often retreats to his Texas ranch for several weeks, but could begin earlier."

Bush joked about the renovation during his press conference, which was a last-minute affair held in the room in question. "Whoever thought about modernizing this room deserves a lot of credit," he said. "It's like there's very little oxygen in here anymore."

But my question is: Will reporters really be allowed back? It's hard to imagine the White House press office won't make at least a token effort to permanently displace the press corps from its current lodgings.

After all, it may be a basement -- and a sub-basement -- but it's still only yards from the Oval Office, making it about the most prized office location anywhere.

Posted by: judigemini on March 16, 2005 08:52 PM

Re-doing the press room?

what comes to mind is that they can rewire the phone lines and plant microphones...

but I think that has nothing to do with his feeling the room too close to breathe - no matter Froomkin's different take.

The planets say he doesn't feel well - and something;s going on with either his back or his heart...

As I said I had never listened to one of his press
conferences before. I was sitting here at the
computer and CNN was on low in the background...
actually I had it on to hear John Conyers, but
Bush came on instead. I knew he was a simpleton
but no aware of how bad it is. I kept thinking
"Why in Hell did he call this news conference?"
He had nothing to announce, no formal opening statement, a lot of smart ass remarkes. Some blood
wiggy defence of his Social Security plan - not
one reporter suggest that millions of people already buy stocks on their own and have been doing it since FDR sat in the Oval Office. Jesus,
where do these reporters come from. That Roberts
from CBS is certainly a flunky, glad they didn't
make him anchor after Rather left. He was first in
line at one time.
Bush tried a few lame jokes - he's like a smart alec teenager. The a few smart remarks about going
to Crawford, and how lucky the press got to go along. and then remarks about the stuffy air...
44 minutes of wasting everyone time. He must have
piles and wanted to walk around some. He had to
be asked about Wolfowitz and DeLay - he loves them
both. Birds of a feather I guess. The sky is falling and this simplistic SOB doesn't notice!

Judi, maybe you were sensing the ANWR vote. Drilling was approved by a 51-49 vote with three turncoat Democrats( both Senators from HI and the one from LA) joining the Rethugs.

Posted by: Roderick on March 16, 2005 09:20 PM

Roderick, both senators from HI? No wonder I am depressed....Hawaii of all places, my home state....and one that was ALWAYS Democratic and liberal...geez. But not surprised by the vote....thanks for that update....obviously these guys are trading their votes....

I haven't posted in a long time (too discouraged maybe?), but check in all the time ... this site is where I find my sanity ... don't know if anyone has posted this ... but it's a must read and a pass it on. Explains in very simple terms exactly what is going on in this country.

Marta,

Exactly. thank you. the first few paras deserve to be printed out:

[The Master] regards himself as a determiner of values; he does not require to be approved of; he passes the judgment: ‘What is injurious to me is injurious in itself;’ he knows that it is he himself only who confers honor on things; he is a creator of values. He honors whatever he recognizes in himself: such morality is self-glorification. “
Friedrich Nietzsche
Beyond Good and Evil

George Bush has said that he wants to run the government like a business. He has achieved his objective, for although Bush was allegedly “elected” as President of all the people, Bush, Inc. is in effect, less a government than it is a vast holding company. The firm’s executive officers are Bush, Cheney, and the Bush Cabinet. The Board of Directors are the Republican Party and the GOP Congressional leadership. The stockholders are the contributors to the Republican campaigns. The “accounts receivable” to the firm are the federal tax revenues from 280 million American citizens, who receive, in return, poor if any government services. Finally, the product of Bush, Inc., is regulatory relief, legislation, and government contracts, all designed to benefit the stockholders.

In almost all instances the dividends to the stockholders are generated and “the product” is delivered at the expense of those who produce the national wealth – the vast majority of our fellow citizens.

The American public is persuaded to tolerate this racket by a mass-media owned and controlled by the Bush, Inc. stockholders. As ultimate insurance, the officers and directors of the firm can not be voted out of office, because the public’s votes are counted and compiled by unauditable machines manufactured and secretly coded by stockholders of the firm. The corporate media, of course, refuses to investigate and publicize this outrage, and dismisses all citizens who raise this issue as “conspiracy theorists.”

To appreciate the force of this analogy, one need only contemplate a broad range of policies proposed by the Bush Administration, and the legislation enacted by his Republican allies in the Congress: one discovers that these policies and legislative acts are all designed to further enhance the wealth and power of the “stockholders” – elites who “own” the Republican party, and hence the White House and the Congress.

In the piece posted upthread about Will Pitt talking with an American fascist in a bar --- Will asks him if he thinks fascist is on the rise in the country and the AF responds he thinks it (fascism) is needed...

I have come to realize that a number of Americans will LIKE fascism... and that a number of politicians of BOTH political parties will be comfortable with fascism.

Marta, thank you for bringing the link from the Crisis Papers... the piece is on the mark...

but according to a statistic I saw in the Theresa Whitehurst piece upthread, about 50% of American adults read at the 5th to 7th grade level. I know a lot of Americans don't read newspapers or anything else, but I had no clue about this statistic... FIFTY PERCENT! That is the most frightening thing I have heard lately.

WV,
Thank you for bringing the description of *'s press conference, so that I don't have to watch or listen to him... one does have to wonder why he even bothered to call one... do you think it was to announce Wolfie?

We all should have known it.

Whenever the administration starts calling your
attention to all the balls the're juggling in the air, something else is going on that they don;t want you to see.

You won't and haven't heard it announced on the news...but if you watched the crawl on the bottom of the news, you would have found out that Riggs
Bank, managed by none other than a brother Bush,
has been found guilty of money laundering not in just the cases that were known about, but in
9 - count em- 9 cases.

But they didn't mention WHO the money laundering was for.

I think we can guess some of the names.

Posted by: Pallas18 on March 16, 2005 11:42 PM

Jo...the 50% of the country who read at 5th-7th grade level are the ones who will be comfortable with fascism...most people don't even know WHAT fascism is...

Posted by: judi gemini on March 16, 2005 11:51 PM

Right, Judi...

I think so many people are insecure... * has certainly played on and enhanced that notion! Those folk will welcome fascism in exchange for security (against terra-ists)

Ironic, isn't it... that the Freepers are accusing Liberals of being fascists!!!

Yes, you're right, most people don't know what it means. But they will be reacting (or not) to a situation, not a label... and they will know that... I think that is what Crisis Papers editor was speaking to above in Marta's post.

Dear astro worlders, I have been seeking info on Jeff Gannon aka James Guckert aka Johnny Gosch. After searching the net, Johnny Gosch was born Nov 12 1969. If Gannon is Gosch and is a sex slave of Lawrence "Larry" King and the Bush Sr white house call boys, his chart is clear!
He has Venus in scorpio opposing Saturn square Mars. Talk about kidnap and sex torture. I hope this info is correct as it may lead to the truth. Bill Marshall

Bill Marshall, that's the date I got from his mother's web page. Of course, we have no idea of the time of birth, and I wish to heck we did, given that the moon is in Sag or Cap (I'm referring to Pluto's progress through Sag and on into Cap).

I am so bummed out about the ANWR vote. Mary Landrieu, my Senator, released this statement:

Sounds like she did it in return for some promises for LA. Why are these people willing to sustain the oil-based economy that adds to global warming for short-term economic gain? We need to go in other directions such as the Apollo Project is trying to do: employing people in the alternative energy industries and in hybrid car production.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
03/16/2005

Sen. Landrieu Statement on ANWR Vote

WASHINGTON --- The following is a statement by U.S. Sen. Mary Landrieu (D-La.) regarding her vote today to maintain a provision in the federal budget that would open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge for oil exploration.

Sen. Landrieu said:

"For Louisiana and our nation, more domestic oil and gas production is vitally important. We need to be drilling more, not less. We need to be exploring new areas where the minimal environmental impact can be closely guarded, as well as in the Gulf of Mexico, which generates billions of dollars of revenue for our federal government each year. My colleagues and I have been encouraged in recent days that a revenue-sharing measure is forthcoming that will benefit our coastal oil- and gas-producing states. Hopefully, we'll be able to get this done this year, just as we have helped Alaska today."

All for 6 mo. worth of oil that can't be tapped for 10 years.

Arctic Refuge Plan B
by lorax
Wed Mar 16th, 2005 at 12:36:44 PST

By now, you've seen the bad news: the Cantwell amendment to strike Arctic Wildlife Refuge drilling from the budget has failed, 51-49.

It is not time to give up. This battle can still be won. We must take the following steps immediately.

1. Focus on defeating the entire Senate budget. This is a distinct possibility, if we can cobble together a coalition of Arctic Wildlife Refuge drilling opponents and enough fiscally conservative Republicans to oppose this bloated, deficit-expanding budget. It is very common for budgets to go unapproved. Dems can offer to support the budget if Arctic Wildlife Refuge drilling is removed.

2. The House budget does not include a provision for Arctic drilling. This is somewhat of an anomaly, as the House has been much more enthusiastic in the past about drilling the Arctic Wildlife Refuge than has the Senate. The budgets will have to undergo a reconciliation process, and maybe we can use this as another bottleneck to protect our national treasure.

3. Worst-case scenario--the budget passes both houses with a provision to open the Arctic Wildlife Refuge for drilling. Then we take it to the corporations. BP and ConocoPhillips, while not model corporate citizens, have renounced their desire to drill in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. We can support them by only buying gas from them and their subsidiaries, while boycotting ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco, the satan-spawn corporations behind this administration and drilling in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. We can hit them where it hurts. A majority of Americans oppose drilling the Arctic Wildlife Refuge, and we can get many of them to boycott the soulless Houston motherfuckers who are behind this bullshit.

Boycott update: Call these two corporations and tell them you refuse to buy their gas until they promise not to drill in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge.

ExxonMobil: (972) 444-1000

ChevronTexaco: (925) 842-1000

Call these two corporations and thank them for refusing to drill in the Arctic Wildlife Refuge. Inform them that they will benefit from your boycott of ExxonMobil and ChevronTexaco.

BP: (281) 366-5174 and (202) 457-6603

ConocoPhillips: (303) 649-4065

" Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez Followers Get Paramilitary Training"

Wednesday, March 16, 2005 11:30 PM EST
The Associated Press By FABIOLA SANCHEZ

"Chanting "fatherland or death," dozens of President Hugo Chavez's supporters lined up in formation, vowing to defend the country if the United States tries to invade. Led by an army reservist, the volunteers in black caps said their numbers would swell in the coming months.

The start of training for "Popular Defense Units" marks a more confrontational stage in U.S.-Venezuelan relations.

Chavez is tightening his personal security, accusing Washington of backing a plot to assassinate him. While U.S. officials seek to isolate a leader who has become a symbol of anti-American sentiment in Latin America, Chavez is warning he will cut off oil exports to the United States if it supports any attempt to overthrow him.

Some of the men and women _ street cleaners, retired teachers and the unemployed _ wore military patches on their sleeves, even though they are civilians and they have yet to obtain formal recognition from the government. They consider themselves part of the army reserve forces.

The training is only one sign of growing tensions between Chavez and U.S. officials, who have traded increasingly sharp accusations. State TV shows video of U.S. officials criticizing Chavez, while playing the "Star Wars" theme music for the "evil empire." Many observers say a U.S. invasion is highly unlikely, but Chavez's warnings have struck a chord on the streets of the capital, where graffiti now declares: "If they kill Chavez, he will return as millions."

Chavez has said his socialist "revolution" for the poor is by nature "anti-imperialist," claiming that has angered the United States. Chavez, a former army paratroop commander who is up for re-election next year, has said U.S. plans to support the Venezuelan opposition are an "obscene interference."

The president has been busy signing oil deals with countries from China to India. Analysts suggest he is lining up alternative allies through oil deals to diminish Venezuela's reliance on the United States, its top oil buyer.

"Venezuela will now help the Southern Hemisphere countries with its oil more than it has helped the United States," Chavez said in India this month.

"Chavez has already spent years weaving a clever and intelligent network of interests in the Americas and the rest of the world to accept this challenge," lawyer Italo Luongo Blohm wrote Wednesday in the Venezuelan newspaper El Universal. "Chavez is preparing for a conflict."

It remains unclear how the tensions could affect the oil market. Venezuela is the fourth-largest supplier of crude oil to the United States, and top Venezuelan officials have pledged to continue supplying the rising U.S. demand.

U.S. diplomats say they are concerned about Venezuelan democracy, freedom of the press, Chavez's stance toward leftist Colombian rebels and moves to buy 10 helicopters and 100,000 Kalashnikov rifles from Russia.

Every critical statement by officials of the United States _ which Chavez calls "the empire" _ has drawn a sharp Venezuelan response.

"Whoever throws a stone at us, we will throw a stone back," Chavez said Sunday. "We will not keep quiet like before, and even less with the Empire."

Chavez last month accused President Bush of backing a plot to kill him, saying "If anything happens to me, forget about Venezuelan oil, Mr. Bush."

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice called the accusations "ludicrous" and also denied Chavez's claim of U.S. involvement in a short-lived coup against him in 2002.
