Sea of Tears
The New Year floats into existence on a sea of tears. The tsunami disaster that has engulfed Southeastern Asia has grasped us all in its grisly tentacles. And perhaps that was its purpose, rather than some vengeful manifestation of divine wrath for a swath of supposed sinners. For a brief moment, we have awakened to the deeper truth of our united human family. Our petty disagreements have faded into the background, momentarily replaced by our collective effort to bring aid and comfort to the suffering of our brothers and sisters half a world away. This fleeting feeling is one we need to steadfastly remember and one that we all too often forget. More commonly, nascent attempts at global cooperation to resolve the world’s most pressing problems clash with a regressive narcissistic nationalism that sees international geopolitics as a Darwinistic struggle for the survival of the fittest. Witness the examples of the International Court and the Kyoto Treaty in which the United States’ refusal to participate puts short-term national gain over long-term collective responsibility and benefit. At our peril, we ignore the handwriting on the wall, especially with regard to our choice of energy sources. The air we breathe causes an ever-increasing rate of asthma amongst our citizens; scientists warn of devastation related to global warning if we do not reduce our use of fossil fuels; we are fighting an unwinnable war against an indigenous and growing insurgency in our effort to control a waning resource upon which our civilization depends. And yet, we do not hear the trumpets blaring, calling us to awaken from our slumber. Now the tsunami tragedy has pricked a deeply buried fear that a fickle and unpredictable Mother Nature could strike anywhere at any time. Will it also awaken a resolve to tackle global warming before it tackles us? Will we aggressively move toward alternative fuel sources or continue to unwillingly limp in that direction? Will we rejoin the global community with humility and a spirit of cooperation or cling to our fading and isolated superpower status? Such thoughts give a 21st Century, globalized meaning to Ben Franklin’s famous words: We must all hang together, or we shall all hang separately. Franklin 2.0. At the moment, we have George Bush captaining our ship with his extraordinary lack of vision and his breathtaking inability to grasp the potential for devastation and chaos that stem from his myopic policies – environmental, military, and economic. The entire thrust of his Iraq war misadventure is a giant regressive step away from the struggling-to-evolve human consciousness that understands the need for collective, peaceful cooperation and shared goals. This war was initiated against the will of a large majority of the world’s citizens and governments. Its unstated aim was to establish the United States as an unopposable global hegemon with a firm military presence in the Middle East, not incidentally the source of most of the world’s oil. And it has incited anger and hatred in the Muslim world, further engendering feelings of disunity and separation rather than cooperation. It is hard to imagine a policy more suited to sabotaging the world’s early attempts at international cooperation and enlightened policy. As discussed on this site in articles written at the outset of the Second Gulf War, the chart for this conflict suggests an inability to reach the primary goals set by the US government and a likelihood of enormous and irresolvable resistance and power struggle. The Sun in the 29th degree of Pisces, a void-of-course position, implies that the original goals will be left dangling and unfinished, superceded by an entirely new set of circumstances and demands which would become increasingly apparent as the Sun progressed into Aries (early 2004). The position of Pluto on the MC opposite Saturn on the IC, both square to the Sun (goals), suggests an ongoing conflict between an immense and controlling power (Pluto/MC) and a resistant, conservative, indigenous force (Saturn/IC). This ongoing struggle thwarts the ability of the war’s goals (Sun) to be manifested, due to the Sun/Pluto/Saturn T-square. It is likely that we will see the growing insurgency in Iraq, now estimated by some as roughly 200,000 strong, significantly more than the current 150,000 US troops, continue to wax in power as the progressed MC of the War chart moves to an exact opposition of natal Saturn and then progressed Saturn, through mid-May 2005. Furthermore, through early November 2005, transiting Pluto will also be opposite natal war chart Saturn, stimulating the MC-opposite-Saturn progression to be active for a further six months and giving continuing strength to the forces that frustrate and repel the US military power and its goals. Thus, the power struggle between American forces and the strong resistance on the ground is likely to rage until at least mid-November 2005. We can expect this to be especially strong in late March and early April 2005 when progressed War chart Moon quincunxes War chart Saturn, and in June, September, October, and early November 2005 when transiting Pluto opposes War chart Saturn. In addition, planetary transits to the birth chart for Iraq also shed some light on this volatile conflict. The war began with the overthrow of the Iraqi government and the initial invasion as Uranus opposed the Iraqi Sun (29 Leo) and then squared the Iraqi MC (2 Gemini) in 2003. Saddam was finally captured when Uranus, the planet of sudden, irreversible change and upset, opposed the Iraqi Sun, symbolizing the ruler, for the final time in December 2003. As Uranus then moved to oppose the Iraqi Ascendant (4 Virgo) in 2004, the situation became increasingly unstable and the feeling of rebellion and insurgency (characteristics of Uranus) increased. Currently, Uranus is finishing its last crossing opposite the Ascendant, waxing through January 22, 2005. Transits of this planet to the angles of a chart normally bring tremendous disruption, upheaval, and unexpected dislocation. Iraq is especially sensitive to these transits with natal Uranus (8 Pisces) conjunct the Descendant. Beginning in March 2005 and continuing through January 2006, Iraq will experience its Uranus return, when Uranus comes back to its natal place (8 Pisces) in the birth chart. In the United States, the first Uranus return in 1861 brought rebellion among the slave-holding states and their secession from the Union. In much the same way, the Iraqi Uranus return is likely to bring some kind of insistence on freedom and independence from the people. Whether this means a civil war fomented by stirrings for independence from the minority Sunni and/or Kurdish populations or whether it means the elected government insists on independence from the residing American troops is yet to be seen. But there will be a strong Iraqi spirit insisting on freedom from perceived oppression and restriction, and high drama is likely to continue from March 2005 through January 2006 in this regard. In the US chart we find that from January through mid-February 2005 military activity is highlighted due to the Jupiter station that will be conjunct US progressed Mars (18 Libra), itself quincunx US progressed Midheaven (18 Taurus). Both the transit and the year-long progression will wane after February, suggesting the possibility of a decrease in US military activity by late winter. Perhaps the US military will assume a lower profile within a few weeks after the January 30 election, although the War chart intimates several months of a continued power struggle nonetheless. With Iraq acting like a festering sore, irresolvable and extremely painful, it seems likely that the administration will be increasingly branded with this calamitous failure during 2005. The coming Inaugural chart Midheaven/Chiron conjunction will wax in strength for several months (likely through September 2005) due to the progression of the Midheaven, suggesting some kind of wound that will alter the course of the administration and perhaps cripple it in some way for the duration of the term. But, while Chiron may bring a grievous and agonizing situation to the administration, it may also offer the possibility of compensatory action that forces a new phase of tremendous growth. It remains to be seen how George Bush, known for his obsessive inability to change course, will handle this energy. At the moment, many of the stories swirling around Washington relate to the administration’s willingness to deceive the public, its lack of connection to reality, and its obliviousness to its impact on others. The Armstrong Williams payoff, the bogus Social Security crisis, and the opulent Inaugural plans that simultaneously force District of Columbia residents who don’t even have a vote in Congress to pay for the event’s security are all examples of a deceptive and arrogant administration disconnected and disinterested in the needs of its citizens. There has even been an actual description in the media of Bush’s refusal to listen to any bad news whatsoever. In all of these stories, we see the effect of Neptune squaring the Inaugural chart Ascendant for the entire month of January, bringing with it an administration out of touch with reality and all too willing to obscure and deceive. The Neptune/Ascendant square will be exact in the 2005 Inaugural chart that goes into effect on January 20, indicating that this deceptive, shifty, disconnected tendency will permeate the Bush administration’s next four years.
Meanwhile, the evolution of human consciousness stands at the threshold of a new era. Within the next century and a half or so, the Sun at the time of the Spring Equinox will move from the constellation of Pisces to the constellation of Aquarius, and we will enter what is known as the Aquarian Age. Every 2160 years, the Equinoctial Sun advances through another constellation, indicating the ever-forward movement of human understanding. Already, there are glimmerings of what is to come as we approach Aquarius, a sign that denotes a true equality among humankind and a communal cooperation in the pursuit of goals. It may be that the great devastation of the Christmas Tsunami was the Earth’s way of pulling us forward another notch, by waking us up to our deeper connections rather than our differences. And just as the tsunami victims and their families, at immeasurable cost, have given us a gift of remembrance of our true destiny, perhaps the tragic mess that is Bush’s Iraqi misadventure may also hold a hidden gift within its bloodshed and sorrow. In fact, it may prove a success by its very failure, pulling us back from the brink of a path of conquest and a plundering hegemony. When a child burns his fingers, he learns not to play with matches. It is far better than burning down the house.

I have heard that it takes about 72 years for the Sun to move about one degree through the Precession of the Equinox. My understanding in about 1975 was that we had about two and a half to three degrees to go. That would be between from about 150 to 185 years from now. Moreover, we would be in the first duadashampsha or 2 and a half degrees of Pisces right now, which would be very Piscean. The critics say we are a bunch of phonies because no on saw it beforehand. I have studied earthquake charts since the early 70's and have predicted a few on radio shows that did occur. However, the tsunami was different. Saturn was opposite Chiron just after the event and I believe that was the planets indicator of this rare occurence. We should go back and study the last time this occured and see what happened. The SVP is 5 Pices 11 min and 31 sec on Jan 1. And it moves backward at about 1 degree every 71 1/2 years. It is how much the Sideral Year and the Tropical year differ or the great year. At least that is what I think. They were conjunct in 221 AD, just as the Christian religion got a good start. It seems that when we enter a new age then we have a shift in religion and power in the world a few hundred years on each side of the "cusp". But I am sure not a scholar on these things. Christianity is based on faith, which is a more Pices/Neptune thing, and the fish is even the early symbol of it. Aquarius is more a reason thing and brotherhood thing. The symbol of Aquarius is the water bearear who spreads knowledge like water. Spreading knowledge has the manifestation of spreading the power among the many or more of an equalization. It takes a long time for these great shifts to take place and hence an age just does not happen all at once but has a gradual build of change around the cusp. This is a terrific article, Nancy! As Mike pointed out there were two gems that just struck the "truth note." Darkest before the light? Yes. Can it get any darker? Yes. This is an impersonal Universe always in transition. The contradictions seem to be ongoing interplays in an attempt to achieve balance. Having an Aquarian ascendant, i've visioned aqaurian achievements since childhood. Fully believed by now that we would be navigating the earth in vehicles using earth's magnetics or that our homes would be fully powered by earth/wind/sun. Perhaps what i see clearly will one day be. It took no less a sage than President Bush to put the firing of four high-level CBS News employees in perspective: "CBS said they would act. They did. And I hope their actions are such that this doesn't happen again." This from the man who fired not a single person in his entire administration for getting nearly everything wrong about Iraq and taking the nation to war for reasons that did not exist or were downright specious. Lucky for Bush he's only the president of the United States and not the head of CBS.
Those who paid at CBS happen to be some of that network's best people. They made a mistake, no doubt about it. They had professional lapses. Again, no doubt about it. But most of them had long and distinguished careers. One of them, in fact, helped break the story about abuses at the Abu Ghraib prison near Baghdad. They deserved to be reprimanded for putting an apparently bogus (at least the documents were) report on the air. They did not deserve to be fired. Liars get fired. None of the CBS four lied. Plagiarists get fired. None of the four plagiarized. Incompetents get fired -- and one mistake over the course of an entire career is not proof of incompetence. Nationalism--nations--at least have a soul. But corporations don't. All they have is the bottom line. And it is the bottom line that is sending our poorest young people (inadequately equipped and in inadequate numbers) to risk death or mutilation for a corporate prize--oil. The troops we are told to "support" i.e. , encourage them to risk life and limb for freedom (actually for profit to others than themselves) are, to Mr. Bush and his dear partners--including the bin Laden family--expendable. Why is there not widespread outrage about this in the US? Because only a small percentage of the population is suffering. That's why we have the backdoor draft, etc. If there was a widespread univeral draft that caused every family--especially the middle class--to suffer, there would be hell to pay. Pls excuse the rant. They seem like the Morlocks in the Time Machine - intelligent and well educated and in most cases very nice people, yet let the church bells ring on three nights a week and they shuffle off to listen to the religious crazy talk with no basis in reality and get whipped into a religious frenzy about rapture and end of times. Being "rapture ready" is the new code word here - everything you do has to reflect on the fact that you may be spirited away at any time and at any moment so you better be prepared spiritually and physically. In our neighborhood alone there have been 4 gastric bypass surgeries endured by overweight women wanting to shed serious pounds to look good for the rapture. Since scripture tells them that when the rapture occurs you will shed your earthly clothes and be spirited away in your human body naked as the day you came into the world, you surely don't want to assend to heavenly glory showing your love handles or a loose caboose! Several churches here are holding "rapture diets" similar to Weight Watchers, only you "diet for Jesus" so you will look good for that final trip of a lifetime. If I've learned anything from all this it's that you cannot argue or debate these people - they cannot even consider an opinion other than their own or what has brainwashed them. There is nothing you can do but sit back and watch the show. George Carlin once said that all of us when born are given a ticket to the Freak Show that is life on earth. SOme of us are the players, some of us the audience, and some of us are the writers/directors. My ticket says I am forced to be here in the audience ... the curtain has come up and it's "showtime" - you have to let it play out, and the reviews don't look good. For true patriots, this will be a treat. And maybe we'll even have the drive and energy to keep it up; there should be plenty to motivate us. The ingress of three centaur planets into new signs within one month -- an event so rare and unusual that slot machines in Reno laundromats have better jackpot odds -- will accelerate the historical process. Centaur energy breaks the box and is extremely challenging for people stuck in old reality frameworks. All the extremists who are busy bombing the living piss out of one another, and many others, in the name of God are definitely old-school types. They are not friends of progress. They are not friends of much at all. Centaurs are progress; and they reach deep into the human level. Yet it will, I think, seem mysterious how much and how fast the social and political landscapes change in the coming weeks. There is a blast of awakening coming; then the centaurs (Chiron, Pholus and Nessus, the first three discovered and named) retrograde and retreat to their old signs, and things quiet down. We get to take stock of the lessons learned in late winter and spring. Then they return to their new signs, and the excitement and enlightenment begin again. Two thousand-five is a transition phase, but it's a transition in levels rather than just across horizontal time. The main thing that shifts is awareness. I was corresponding with one of my astrology teachers this past weekend, an expert in classical interpretation methods, about the inauguration chart. I have deep reservations about publishing his comments to a general audience, and I also have different interpretations not just of the chart but also of hat our calling must be, that is, of how we need to respond, in light of such a situation. But from the standpoint of traditional astrology, which by the way also says we can't do anything to change the course of 'fate', the picture is a bit grim, and you're likely to read about the symbolism elsewhere. When you do, please keep your mind open to other possibilities. Remember that reality is a work in progress. Remember that you get a vote. Remember that miracles happen every day. Over the summer, I published a not-so-grim but deeply concerned essay series interpreting both the inauguration and election charts, links to which I will provide below. It will take a little time, but we will soon discover the deeper qualities of the monster collectively known as "Bush." It is not Bush, George W. or George H.W., or Jebby or Prescott (George H.W.'s father, a senator and Skull and Bones member, who had, let's say politely, some interesting ideas about life). What we are about to encounter is the idea that these people represent; the collective for whom they are the (admittedly well-paid) spokesmen and actors and pawns. In essence, an idea takes the throne on Thursday. Not a person. We have had clues, if we are looking for what that idea may be. But then clues are always the result of observation. The $60 billion per month trade deficit is one clue. That means that, despite the incredibly weak dollar (which makes our products cheap, and therefore theoretically appealing to foreign markets), America is still importing $60 billion more goods than it is exporting each month. (I often wonder if that figure factors in the merchandise we "export" to Iraq, which would make the deficit look better.
Up to $9 billion per month (that's nine thousand million dollars) is being spent to shoot, bomb and napalm Iraq, money not even included in the federal budget -- it is "supplemental." BushCo is about to go to Congress to seek yet another $100 billion, money which goes somewhere, that is, into someone's pockets. The whole original rationale for the war (weapons of mass destruction, Saddam's plans for conquering the universe, etc.) collapsed into the sand and was exposed as a bald lie, but we're still being told by BushCo and BlairCo that they did the right thing. Of course they did! What else could they possibly say? And why should they say something else, if half the people believe them? Yet at this point, I must be the big-mouthed citizen-son and intervene with a logical question about all this debt: WHY? Why are all the resources going to war and violence, and to the super rich (in the form of tax cuts) and not to simple, cheap social programs? Why so much death instead of life? Why does it seem a war is being waged on the US economy from within its own borders? Why does it feel like the US economy, a 747 that flies pretty good, is being pointed at the nearest mountaintop? I believe there is a reason. I am going to let the question stand for a while, and ask that you ponder it, and maybe to get back to me if you feel like it; just reply to this email and I'll see what you write. I ask this question with the prejudice or presumption that in politics and government, anyway, there are no accidents. Everything is so carefully planned, deliberated and drawn out so many years in advance that something like the most stunning national debts and deficits, concurrent with most the expensive wars in all of known history, combined with this bizarre plan to trash and trade for debt our most precious social program -- Social Security -- cannot possibly be an accident or a coincidence. There is an agenda. But what is that agenda, really? One of the most intriguing and disturbing qualities of the inauguration chart is its 8th house. Sagittarius is on the cusp, and the house contains a rather hostile conjunction of Mars and Pluto, applying. It represents a developing situation. The 8th house is generally thought of as the place where we look for information about death, but it's also the place where we look for information about financial transactions with others. Mars and Pluto are the two ruling planets of Scorpio. Since the chart has Taurus rising, Scorpio is setting, on the 7th house cusp: the house that represents partners and enemies. (The 8th develops the themes of the 7th several steps further, to the level of contractual arrangements, exchanges, commitments and mergers with the partners we meet in the 7th). In the 8th, you can lose control, lose your name, lose your body, inherit someone's wealth, form a merger, make a child, incorporate, and so on. But there is always -- always -- someone else involved. So we find these two rather intense, mysterious, powerful, and obsessive rulers of Scorpio in the 8th house, together, joining forces. They represent a partner or an enemy, or both. The violence of this imagery, the god of War and the lord of Death placed in the house of death, is obvious. Then, the whole business is magnified by the Great Attractor, which is right there in mid-Sagittarius. And the Sagittarius connection brings in foreigners, particularly with religious overtones (not news, but the intensity of this chart is certainly new and newsworthy). Yet the whole issue of debt has not been discussed astrologically in the context of this chart, that I have seen. Over the summer, I spent an afternoon talking with one of my wise In that notebook, the words, "Debt as religion" are written. They are her words. I remember my sense of mild shock as I wrote them down. Debt as religion? A religion of debt? What would that look like? Or rather, what does it look like? It looks like a world so hopeless that people see no future at all; so they spend and expend and consume the future on things they don't even need in the present. They eat tomorrow's food today, taking no real satisfaction in the moment, and getting bloated. They spend their endowments instead of living on the interest; they cash in their 401K to go on vacation; they bake cookies out of their heirloom seed stocks; they poison the well, or sell the water rights and have a party with the money. At the same time, the whole notion of sex and healthy exchange of sex (critical to the 8th house) becomes so alien under these conditions that it's as if all the creative/erotic energy we have is being bound up in debt, or shoved into debt, or put there because we're scared of creativity and fun. It is nearly impossible to relax under such circumstances; nearly impossible to let the energy and inspiration flow. Can you really make love when you owe everyone everything? When the 8th house is full of passion, surrender, creation, reproduction, collaboration and partnership, there is prosperity. When it is filled with conflict, debt, chaos and death, there is suffering and loss. Most times we choose between the two. Life is never a smooth ride, but we do have some power to choose. (The 8th house in the first inauguration chart is quite impressive, featuring Pluto, the Moon, Ceres and Chiron). But we have more power the less debt we have. We have less power the more debt we have. These days, you graduate with college with school debt and credit card debt, and embark on your 20s to pay it off. Some American dream. When my father graduated college in 1965, he bought a two-family house and a new car one year later. And he was a school teacher, not a stock broker. Much of our economy, working at its best, is financed on debt. Consumer spending, for example, incurs vast debt, at what should be called usurious interest rates -- the lending of money at an exorbitant (and what are held, by the Bible anyway, to be illegal) price. Foreign governments gamble on US business interests, financing the economy and hoping to make a buck, or a billion. We go into debt as a society as a result. Without those investments, we're pretty much screwed. And when there is debt, he who controls interest rates controls those who owe him the principle. These are high times for people addicted to powerlessness. Of course, being powerless makes some people feel "safe." They don't have to do anything, because they "can't." The US national debt is an interesting bird. In 1868, an amendment was made to the federal Constitution -- the 14th. It has some very cool language, on which we all depend every day. In part, the 14th holds that no state shall "deprive any person of life, liberty, or property, without due process of law; nor deny to any person within its jurisdiction the equal protection of the laws." This is part of our social contract. It is a very 8th house statement, about life and property, and about the proper use of power by the government. This particular provision is being violated every minute of the day in the treatment of "detainiees" and many other provisions of the PATRIOT Act and its successor laws. But at the end of the 14th amendment, something very strange is added on, having something to do with the then-recently-fought Civil War, but which still remains in the Constitution today. It says, "The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned." The validity of the public debt shall not be questioned! In other words, it could be held as unconstitutional by the Supreme Court, for example, for Congress to pass a law requiring the budget to be balanced. So, in a sense, debt is part of our national religion. Particularly war debt. And money is a big, big theme in both the news and in the inauguration chart. Consider a 2nd house Gemini Moon, as appears at noon Thursday, about to oppose an 8th house Mars and Pluto. That does not seem too stable to me. What do you think? We see the actual results of that about nine months from now -- in October or so. In the inauguration chart, Taurus is rising (it always is), so Venus is one significator for the new president (so, too, is the Sun in the 10th house). Where do we find Venus? In the 9th house, of foreign matters, and foreign countries. The president is abroad! (He is also rich; Venus in Capricorn says old money.) And in Capricorn, we have the image of the president not just as a foreigner or alien (placed in the 9th) but also as being directly involved with foreign governments; quite literally, part and parcel of them. Venus goes quite well in Capricorn. She doesn't take her shoes off at the beach, but her investments add up. Saturn, the ruler of Capricorn and the planets located there, tells us more. Saturn is retrograde in Cancer. Cancer Conjunct Mercury, whoever Venus represents is smooth talking and politically tenable. This person, our leader, makes a plausible case that seems reasonable to many; reassuring in that patronizing way to very scared people; even responsible, despite every indication to the contrary. Scared people are always more likely to believe lies than those who have some freedom and tranquility. Scared people need to believe lies; content people do not. The founding fathers knew this, when they said that democracy can only function in a state of relative peace and stability. This is why an election in Iraq is a farce. There is no democracy at the point of the gun. Whatever the PR team may call it, that is tyranny. In part due to the intensity of that 8th house, I don't expect Bush to finish his second term. The Sun-Chiron conjunction does not bode well in this respect, either. And I believe there is a plot brewing inside the administration. The 8th is a lot about secrets, and something is definitely brewing there. And Nessus is in the last degree of Capricorn, which in the Sabian symbol system is about the men who rule the world. Astrologers have been writing predictions of a doomed Bush presidency for years, but I think their predictions have been premature, and most don't take into account what would happen next (a lot would happen next). I don't expect him to be replaced by anyone better. Meanwhile, I think we should consider ourselves extremely fortunate if we have a functioning economy in four years. And I'll personally be very grateful if, four years from today, we have passed the time without a major nuclear incident. I say to you today: we will be grateful, more grateful than we are at our most aware today, to be together with our families, and to be safe in our homes. At this point, we need a little reality check. On this day, in your opinion, whatever your current political stripes (quite a few zebras will soon be rearranging their patterns, and we'll soon be surprised to find anyone who claims to have voted for Bush) how far would be too far? How egregious would the government's conduct need to be before you became concerned enough to do something? What would you personally put up with? Friends, loved ones and citizens of the world: we have a debt to ourselves and our children and our communities. If we listen, we will hear the calling. If we feel, we will respond. We must do our dharma and act as if to hold the world together. As Washington makes final preparations for Thursday's inaugural bash, a new poll out from the BBC World Service http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/americas/4185205.stm shows some pretty dark sentiment around the globe regarding President Bush's encore in the Oval Office. "On average across all countries, 58% of people -- and 16 out of 21 countries polled -- said they believed Mr Bush's re-election to the White House made the world more dangerous," the BBC reports. "Only three countries -- India, Poland and the Philippines -- out of 21 polled believed the world was now safer." "The survey found that 47% now viewed US influence in the world as largely negative and such unfavorable feelings extended towards Americans as a whole. None of the countries polled supported contributing their troops to Iraq. "'This is quite a grim picture for the US,' said Steven Kull, director of the Program on International Policy Attitudes (PIPA), which carried out the poll with GlobeScan. 'Negative feelings about Bush are high and are generalizing to the American people who re-elected him.'" "Most negative feelings were found in Western European, Latin American and Muslim countries. They include traditional US allies such as Germany, France, Britain and Italy as well as neighbours Canada and Mexico." Also noteworthy is that Turkey -- a U.S. ally and the only Muslim member of NATO -- topped the anti-Bush list, with 82 percent believing his reelection would be negative for global security. "Other predominantly Muslim countries -- Indonesia and Lebanon -- were also high up the list," the survey adds. "But, any warmer feelings in Indonesia towards the US following its tsunami relief operations would not show up as the poll was carried out before the disaster struck, says the BBC's Dan Isaacs." You'd hate to have to rely on catastrophic natural disasters to restore America's standing around the world… still, according to the BBC, Kull says the results do not constitute a definitive worldwide majority, "suggesting there may be some underlying openness to repairing relations with the U.S." We suppose the question is, do those amenable folks have four more years? Fox News as a source: Ready Reserve Soldiers Resist Iraq Service NEW YORK — With U.S. soldiers serving extended missions in Iraq and Afghanistan, the Army is tapping its more rusty forces for help. But some Individual Ready Reserve (search) soldiers — many of whom haven't touched a weapon in years — are crying foul at the call-up. Unlike their counterparts in the Army Reserves (search) and National Guard (search), who are paid to train regularly and be combat-ready, the IRR typically receive no routine payment or training. "I thought it was very unlikely that I would be called back," said one IRR soldier now training at Fort Jackson, S.C. (search). But IRR soldiers receive points toward retirement and are contractually bound to serve if needed — which is uncommon, but it happened during the first Gulf War in 1991. "It is sort of difficult, but you still have to honor your commitment and you still have to be here," said another soldier. For Operation Iraqi Freedom, the Army is meeting resistance from as many as one in four of the nearly 5,000 IRR soldiers who have completed their enlistments but were called back to duty. In some cases, it's a matter of outdated addresses and other paperwork. Other soldiers have medical problems or pressing family commitments, which the Army takes into consideration. But some veterans insist they've already fulfilled they military duties and are being called back unfairly. One such soldier is Todd Parish, who served as a lieutenant and claims he fulfilled his commitment in 2003. The Army disputes that claim, insisting that Parish, who is suing the Army, failed to submit the proper paperwork to resign and is still eligible to be called back to active duty. "I met the requirements of resignation, I did my eight years. I would have gladly gone before then, but at some point, every person volunteers and they should also have the right to de-volunteer themselves if they choose to go ahead and be a private citizen once again," Parish told FOX News. Many of the IRR soldiers going back see their service as fulfilling a commitment they made years ago. But for those soldiers who believe they are being called back unfairly, the Army is simply resorting to a backdoor draft.

NOT WITHOUT CONDITIONS By Arianna Huffington When pressed by The Washington Post last week about why no one in his administration has been held accountable for the myriad failures in Iraq, President Bush sounded uncannily like Will Forte's petulant caricature on "Saturday Night Live": "Well, we had an accountability moment — and that's called the 2004 election." There was no word on whether the president then put his thumb on his nose and wiggled his fingers or just went with the more efficient single middle finger. In the next few weeks, Democrats in Congress will have an "accountability moment" of their own — George Bush's request for another $80 to $100 billion in supplemental funding for the war in Iraq. This will be the third time since the war began that the president has come to the Hill looking to refill his Iraqi coffers. The last two times, congressional Democrats helped rubber-stamp his requests, forking over $152 billion in military funding. The time has come for Democratic leaders to say: "Not this time, Mr. President." First they need to admit that they were wrong. Wrong to trust the president and wrong to allow him to put our troops in harm's way without a plan for post-Saddam Iraq, without significant allies (sorry Bulgaria), and without an exit strategy. It can be Harry Reid or Nancy Pelosi or the just-back-from-Iraq John Kerry or the ranking Democrat on the House Appropriations Committee, David Obey — but somebody with a (D) after his or her name needs to demand a straight answer to specific questions. Questions like: Mr. President, what are our long-term goals in Iraq? Are they realistic? How long will it take — and how many more billions will have to be spent — to reach them? What are our total casualty figures and how many more casualties are we willing to endure? Are we or are we not committed to a permanent presence there? Democrats should begin the appropriations debate by demanding, at long last, a realistic assessment of the situation. While the president continues sounding like a happy-talk local weatherman, forever optimistic that the insurgency's torrential RPG and IED showers will soon be giving way to loads of sunny freedom and democracy, some high-profile Republicans — perhaps looking to their legacies, or maybe just sick of the condescending lies — are offering a gloomy forecast. Outgoing Secretary of State Colin Powell, for example, recently told the president, "We're losing." And Brent Scowcroft, the outgoing head of the Foreign Intelligence Advisory Board, warned that the Iraqi elections "have the great potential for deepening the conflict." So which is it, Mr. President? Are we about to witness Iraq's 1776 (with Grand Ayatollah Sistani taking on the role of Thomas Jefferson) or about to find ourselves smack in the bloody middle of a Shiite vs. Sunni holy civil war? Democrats should then demand that the president explain his exit strategy and how long he thinks it will take before our troops come home. The White House originally figured we'd be in and out before the flowers tossed at the liberators' feet had wilted. That fantasy soon gave way to the notion that things would be better once we captured Saddam. Then once sovereignty was transferred ("Let freedom feign!"). Then once elections were held. Now they're certain they'll be better, uh, when they get better. "Clearly, we don't see the election itself as a pivotal point," Deputy Secretary of State Richard Armitage suddenly announced last week. "It's the beginning of a process where Iraqis will write a constitution and at the end of the year will actually vote for a permanent government." So now it's when Iraqis vote for a "permanent government" — which is precisely what many Arabs in the Middle East are afraid of. As a high-ranking Jordanian official told me: "When the mullahs take over, the election will turn out to have been one person, one vote, one time." The Democrats should also do everything in their admittedly diminished power to try to place some conditions on this next round of funding before they vote. That is, after all, their job. The one they've sworn an oath to do. For starters, they should demand an answer to the question: How do you propose to pay for the $100 billion? Will the president consider rolling back the tax cuts he gave the top 1 percent of American taxpayers, asking them to sacrifice in the name of freedom and democracy? (Yeah, right!) Or will he just add another hundred bil to the mounting tab he's running up for future generations? Democrats should also link the money to a pledge from the administration that the first dollars spent will go toward making sure our troops have everything they need, including body armor, fully-armored Humvees, GPS devices, and equipment to jam the signals insurgents use to activate the remote-controlled explosives that have caused the death and mutilation of so many young Americans. The Democrats should force the president to put our money where his lip service is. They should also take the opportunity to turn the spotlight on the epidemic of fraud and corporate profiteering that have infected the Iraqi operation. The White House has to explain why taxpayers should cut it another $100 billion check when the money we've already forked over has been so poorly spent, much of it by administration cronies. According to the Center for Strategic and International Studies, just 27 cents of every dollar earmarked for the rebuilding of Iraq is reaching ordinary Iraqis, with the rest being pocketed by big U.S. corporations. What's more, nearly two years after we toppled Saddam, the people of Iraq still have to deal with massive food shortages, less electrical power than before the war, and disease-producing water and sewage systems. At the very least, Democrats should demand that Congress pass the bipartisan resolution co-sponsored by Sens. Dick Durbin and Larry Craig calling for the formation of a special committee modeled on the one Harry Truman created during WW II to root out war profiteering. And, finally, Democrats should force the president to address the question of whether the 14 "enduring bases" we're constructing around Iraq indicate plans to make a U.S. military presence there permanent. Even Bush family fixer James Baker is concerned about the message being sent by the bases: "Any appearance of a permanent occupation will both undermine domestic support here in the United States and play directly into the hands of those in the Middle East who — however wrongly — suspect us of imperial design." Weren't U.S. bases in Saudi Arabia what initially caused Osama bin Laden to set his murderous sights on America? Bush needs to send an unequivocal message that there will be no long-term American military presence in Iraq. He can begin by getting rid of the clause in the interim Iraqi constitution that allows the U.S. to set up permanent bases. Does sovereign mean sovereign or doesn't it? The Democratic leadership has a responsibility to act as the loyal opposition and not just throw up its hands and sign off on the funding. I realize that they are outnumbered and can't actually stop the White House from getting its way — but the moral power of making a stand is critically important, especially coming after an election in which even staunch Democrats sometimes wondered what precisely their party stood for. What better way for Democrats to set the stage for the 2006 campaign than by forcing the Bush administration to level with the American people? But the more I hear from congressional Democrats, the graver are my concerns about how ready they are for their accountability moment close-up. Take Rep. Rahm Emanuel, the new head of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. This weekend, when Tim Russert asked whether, knowing there are no WMD in Iraq, he would still have voted for the war had he been in Congress, Emanuel went all John-Kerry-at-the-Grand-Canyon and answered "Yes." I actually had to get the transcript to make sure I hadn't misheard. I hadn't. And it isn't just Emanuel. Judging from conversations I've had with a number of other congressional Democrats, it doesn't appear that there is a strategy — let alone a clear one — for how to deal with the appropriations request. As one House member told me, "We haven't even started thinking about it yet." Well, what have they been doing? Deciding what to wear to the inauguration of the guy who beat them because they "hadn't even started thinking about it" last year either? His missing in action status until a few days ago on the disinfranchisement of voters(particularly black voters) not only in Ohio but other parts of the country was truly HOPELESS. Mostly these days I just try to take things in, sort through all the emotions, and find some way to balance all the negativity. Honestly, I think sometimes you guys here are just like all the repub. & military sites I go to, just the other side of the coin. Firstly, Barack Obama is an incredibly gifted, intelligent man. I wish any one of us had one tenth the degree of his intellect, wisdom, class, knowledge, and life experience. I would have preferred that he vote "nay" today also on the Rice confirmation; however, my viewpoint on his vote leads me to my primary reason for posting tonight: we, as a people, as the children of God, MUST find a way to bridge our differences. The world is a damn mess, and it's up to ALL of us to BE THE PEACE, not continue to tear each other down. I know from years of reading the wonderful words on this site that you ALL can be the harbingers of the wisdom that is so sorely lacking and utterly necessary at this moment in our time. But sometimes, I think ya'll really let the political games overshadow your spirits. I see this all the time on the progressive sites we all visit, and if you would think about it, I think you'd agree that it is absolutely DRAINING. This is a sign folks to step back, and see the process, and have faith; not to continue to push and push an agenda that will only be met by it's opposing force. Bush for a second term as President, the opposition is doing a lot of soul searching. There are some who say Democrats have to moderate the message to reach out to the red states. This would be for them a recipe for disaster. They must instead learn from the tactics of the Republican revolution of the 80s. They did not try to become more like the Democrats who controlled Congress; instead, they made a united effort to move the country to the right. Democrats panicked when they began to lose the South; they abandoned their core values and instead of making the case that their message was the right one, they tried to create what Bill Clinton called "the third way." While Bill Clinton was able to win two Presidential elections against inferior opposition, the Republicans took control of both houses of Congress. Bill Clinton's victories had nothing to do with the new agenda pushed by the DLC - he was a charismatic campaigner who connected with the American People. He won despite the lack of a united party behind him. Progressives need to build a party that represents working people, that protects the environment, that provides a safety net for those in our society who can't help themselves, that protects civil liberties and the rights of all people. It would be unwise for Progressives to pander to the religious right - remember when they called themselves the Silent Majority? They are not silent anymore, they are in power, and they won't be removed from power with the right candidate in one election. Progressives must now engage in a long-term campaign to build a new majority. The real majority does not share the values of the Republican Party - the problem is that the Democratic Party has abandoned its core values and is trying move in the direction that pollsters are telling them to go, instead of moving the people.
