Clash of the Titans
There is a deep and abiding fear in many Americans that our most hallowed, secular rite, the election of our leaders, is about to be desecrated beyond repair. At the heart of our democracy lies the irrevocable promise that we choose our leaders and that they lead by our consent. When steps are taken to thwart this process, to deny the right to vote to those citizens who are entitled to do so, the taint, if untended, can become a malevolent scourge deep within the American soul. The infamous felon purge of Florida’s voter rolls in the 2000 election that systematically disenfranchised many thousands of mostly African American, Democratic voters, will go down in history as one of the foremost examples of a shameless and despicable power grab that changed the course of history, bringing the radical George W. Bush and his corporate cronies into the halls of power. Unfortunately, there are already several examples of brazen voter suppression erupting in the 2004 election season. In both Nevada and Oregon, Democratic voter registration forms have been purposefully destroyed. Several states have reported intimidation of minority voters. And Greg Palast, who uncovered the nefarious Florida voter purge of 2000, claims that most of the unfairly expunged voters of four years ago have not yet been reinstated on the eve of the 2004 election. Given that the presidential race is in a dead heat nationally, as well as in many battleground states, these numerous assaults on our democratic process may have enormous ramifications. After much consideration of the many astrological factors, I am predicting that we may well have a post-election power struggle that will culminate between November 20 and 25, with John Kerry the winner. Our present-day increasingly vicious cultural civil war is likely to be ruthless, fierce, and deeply disturbing during these three weeks. Unfortunately, though the Kerry victory will be immensely important, it will not herald the end of this bitter war between two opposing and mutually exclusive world views. One can hope, however, that with appropriate presidential leadership, some of the excesses of this ongoing battle can be muted in the coming years. Despite the more widely accepted 8:03 AM birth time for John Kerry, I have begun to look more and more favorably on the originally given 7:10 AM time. The latter chart very accurately describes the exact period of the dip in Kerry’s momentum and the very debilitating (and likely quite painful for Kerry) Swift Boat controversy that began in mid-August. These difficult times came very precisely during the converse Moon square to Kerry’s Saturn, a reliably unhappy and emotionally stressful time for someone with a natal Saturn/Moon conjunction. Two days after the Saturn/Moon aspect had begun to wane, Kerry gave his highly energized September 20th foreign policy speech that can be seen as the real turning point away from the moribund energy that was hovering over his campaign. By the rousingly successful first debate on September 30, the debilitating effect of the Saturn/Moon aspect had completely evaporated. In the 8:03 AM chart, on the other hand, the Saturn/Moon influence would have remained intensely strong through October 3. There is no conceivable way this could be so. After the first debate, the candidate and his troops were miles away from the doldrums that had gripped the campaign from mid-August through mid-September. There are several other indicators that the 7:10 chart fits events quite accurately. The second crossing of Uranus square to the Ascendant in that chart, compounded by the opposition with Mars and Mercury in mid-August, came exactly at the time the Swift Boat ads appeared and Kerry’s post-Convention momentum (with Jupiter on the MC) ended. This was clearly a surprise attack (Mars/Uranus) that reversed everything very quickly and unexpectedly (Uranus). The final crossing of Uranus square to that chart’s Ascendant will come in January 2005, before, during, and after the Inauguration, when Kerry’s personal status is once again transformed suddenly and irrevocably as he becomes the next President of the United States. The significant aspect in the 7:10 AM Kerry chart for the final weeks of the campaign and into mid- November is the exact month-long crossing of Pluto square to the chart Midheaven, 21Virgo10. This aspect, which began in late December 2003, suggests an impassioned power struggle with a fierce opponent and an all-consuming battle for survival, resulting ultimately in a profound transformation. That its final intensified phase continues through November 20 before it begins to wane, suggests that a sense of brutal struggle may continue until that time. Amazingly, November 20 will bring a Mercury Pluto conjunction, the same aspect that sealed the fate of the 2000 election on December 12, 2000. It remains to be seen if this aspect will play a role in finalizing the 2004 election as well, though it will surely be a trigger to the fervent Pluto energy agitating much of the country at that time. While Kerry is under Pluto square to his Midheaven, the country will be under the final crossing of Pluto opposite natal Mars (21Gemini23) which will peak on November 25 before it begins to dissipate. This aspect, which also began in December 2003, has brought both the escalating struggle with the Iraqi insurgency of the past year and the strengthening cultural/political war in our midst at home, played out increasingly in the presidential and Congressional campaigns. It seems likely that one or both of these fierce struggles will intensify in November before the aspect begins to wane at the end of the month. Pluto’s stimulation of Mars’ position in the US 7th house throughout 2004 suggests ferocious battles with an open enemy. In addition, Mars’ dual rulership of the 4th and 12th houses suggests struggles with secret, hidden enemies (12th house), as well as the instability and anger at home relating to the battle (4th house). Another indication in the US chart of the strain that its citizens are currently under is the transit of Saturn quincunx US Moon (27Aquarius12) which runs from October 4 through November 19. Although a quincunx is not a major aspect, this configuration nonetheless indicates increased angst, sorrow, and feelings of burden, which certainly describes the pre-election feelings of many. That it continues through November 19 could easily indicate a prolonging of those insecure feelings in the general populace. The alternative, though not mutually exclusive, view would be that this Saturn/Moon aspect suggests a population increasingly upset about the war and the economy. Unexpected events could certainly add to concerns in those areas, but these are unlikely to lift after late November as would a belatedly finalized election. A consideration of other elements in Kerry’s chart contrasted with the general mood of Bush’s chart further clarifies the picture. Although Kerry is going through what is likely to be the power struggle of his political life (Pluto/MC), there are several other aspects that suggest a positive outcome during the same period. Progressed Venus is quincunx the Moon (8/04 through 6/05) and transiting Uranus is trine to his natal Venus (9/1 through 12/24/04). In addition, Jupiter, his ruling planet now in Libra, will be trine or sextile his Ascendant, Sun, Mars, Uranus, Moon, Pluto, and Mars at varying times over the next few months. The strong Venus influence suggests that the candidate will be surrounded by supportive and adoring crowds, and the Jupiter aspects indicate feelings of success and optimism. Bush, on the other hand, will be unable to avoid the failed consequences of his irresponsible policies, as reality continues to relentlessly nip at his heels over the next several months. With Saturn opposing the Midheaven in the Inaugural chart and both square the Midheaven and conjunct its own place in Bush’s own chart, and these aspects continuing with great strength through early December (Bush’s Saturn return) and early January (Saturn square Bush’s MC), I see no significant relief in sight for him. It is true that Jupiter will cross his Moon, December 19 through December 26, and cross his natal Jupiter, January 1 through January 11, 2005, normally an uplifting set of aspects for him. But the Moon/Jupiter can be ascribed to the Christmas holiday spirit, and the Jupiter return is concurrent with Saturn exactly square to Bush’s Midheaven and semisquare his Mars, which would seem to cancel much of Jupiter’s optimistic and celebratory energy. There are two other significant aspects that are currently impacting Bush, both triggered by Pluto in November. The first of these is Bush’s progressed Ascendant square to progressed Uranus (21Gemini32), triggered by transiting Pluto from November 2 through November 30. This aspect is likely to bring upsets, surprises, and reversals that can affect Bush personally (Ascendant). It suggests that the results of this election may surprise Bush and quite suddenly change his personal position in life. The Mercury/Pluto conjunction square the Moon on November 20 may act as a strong activator of this energy. The other noteworthy aspect in Bush’s chart is the converse progressed Mars conjunction to his Ascendant (7Leo07), which has been making him increasingly irritable, impatient, and angry in recent months. This progression goes well into 2005, but it is also triggered by Pluto in the immediate future. Pluto will be sesquiquadrate to Bush’s Ascendant/converse Mars progression from November 19 through December 16, and further stimulated by Mars on November 20 and 21. It seems likely that November and early December, especially the 20th and 21st of November, will be a time of great irritability and anger for our Resident in Chief. After almost four years of the radical Bush Presidency, the country is deeply stressed and fearful. Besides the deteriorating and violent conditions in Iraq, oil prices are soaring, the Stock Market is sinking, job creation is stagnant, we are swamped in debt, and our only allies, other than Great Britain, are the world’s dictators. The solitary thing that the Bush administration has excelled in has been its self-serving propaganda, and its manipulative control of the national conversation has been extraordinary. Half of the country continues to believe the Great Deceiver on a wide array of subjects despite an inordinate amount of evidence to the contrary. Much of the battle for John Kerry has been to penetrate this fog of illusion and present the American public with an alternative view of reality, one that is far closer to the truth than Bush’s myriad of fairy tale deceptions. The debates were a great aid in this regard in that the Senator was able to dismantle the caricature created by Bush and his toadies over the previous month. It remains to be seen, however, what November will bring in terms of post-election turmoil and how Bush’s Machiavellian propaganda machine will disfigure what should be a clear election victory for Senator Kerry. The planets indicate to me at least three weeks of some kind of struggle that seems likely to relate to the election results. It is hard to imagine that Bush will graciously concede defeat and abandon his addiction to power for the greater good of the country. He has never done so before.

Amen, Nancy, Amen. Many of us are feeling this will not be decided Nov. 2nd. I know we all have bushfatigue so I am especially impressed with focus on what is happening right now and what can be expected from this election. W. Robert Hand's book while extremely valuable can only take interpretations aspect by aspect, there are hundreds of possibilities within a transiting aspect. There are progressions, solar returns, the condition of the planet in the natal chart. Kerry's Saturn is conjuncted by his Moon and opposed by the Sun and it all sextiles his Jupiter. The Saturn oppose the US Pluto and conjunct the US Mercury is a far more telling aspect because of the Mercury/Pluto natal opposition. Pluto will not be opposing Kerry's Saturn until January of 2005 and the opposition will show up in his Solar Return. I would say he has a lot of hard work without much reward in 2005. In May of 2005 Pluto opposes his natal Saturn, trines his progressed Jupiter, while Uranus will be squaring his natal Mars and his progressed Mars conjunct his natal Mars. the Spring of 2005 promises to be a difficult and dangerous time for Kerry. Once he is president, all kinds of pressures will come. Saturn rules his 2nd house and is in his 7th. He is talking a lot about regaining our allies. With Pluto on his 7th house Saturn that may not be so easy, but he will work hard at it. The idea of partnerships is very important to him. With Saturn ruling his second house, I think we will see the economic reality of the country and the painful reality of the Bush created recession making things very difficult as well. Posted by: Nancy on October 21, 2004 01:34 AMW....I am exactly 6 months older than John Kerry...my birthday is June 7, June 8 by GMT because I was born in Hawaii....I was born with Saturn conjunct my natal Sun at 16 Gemini. When Pluto opposed my sun exactly, it was my 59th birthday. I got shingles. My sun/ sat and Uranus is in the 8th, so Pluto was in the 2nd. I did have lots of things to take care of...my mother had declined so much that I had to ask help from the county to take care of her. It was intense....but not terrible. Well...it HURT alot! But Sally never ignores transits...I am sure John Kerry won't be able to either.
From Crystalinks.com Posted by: wv on October 21, 2004 01:52 AMIf you look at the 7:10 chart, Uranus first squares the Ascendant - change in personal conditions and envrionment - during the Inauguration period. Then it squares Uranus - ruler of the 3rd and in the 7th - perhaps Kerry will feel freer to act and speak out. He may also try some unusual things and be very creative in unexpected ways. Then Uranus squares his Mars, and things could get quite heated up. He could be quite aggressive in dealing with Congress or allies, or have some unexpectedly aggressive things to deal with. He won't wimp out under those aspects. The Pluto square to Saturn, second pass, comes during this springtime Uranus station square his Mars. It won't be dull!! Basically I think he will have sh*t pile left by Dubya, on the one hand, and Tom Delay, et al, on the other. By the way, when Pluto squared my Saturn it wasn't much of a big deal. I think I was a little more touchy than usual but that was it. It isn't necessarily such an awful aspect by itself. It depends on many other factors. Washington Post: "[I]n the October issue of Vanity Fair magazine, former Supreme Court law clerks from the court's 2000-01 term speak out -- under cover of anonymity -- about what they saw behind the scenes during the fateful case of Bush v. Gore. That case, decided by a 5-4 vote, ended the contentious recount in Florida, thereby giving the presidency to George W. Bush. [C]lerks contend that the decision was a rank exercise in partisanship by conservative Republican justices.... 'We feel that something illegitimate was done with the Court's power, and such an extraordinary situation justifies breaking an obligation we'd otherwise honor,' one clerk told the magazine. Even my favorite nut job Pat Buchanan stated if Bush loses re-election a fight for the heart and soul of the Republican party will take place between more moderate Republicans and the gaggle of extreme right wing wacko's that are now in charge. Posted by: Bushfatigued on October 21, 2004 07:10 PMRReagan ran against then Pres. Gerald Ford in the Rep primaries for President in 1976... he lost by only 60 delegates to Ford, who went on to lose to Carter in November... many say Carter won because Nancy Reagan convinced those who supported Reagan to go fishing on election day... she never forgave the win to Ford... my point? Republicans have been known to express themselves by NOT voting... 1976 was not the only time. There are a number of paleoconservatives who will have 'other plans' on Nov. 2nd... Rationale? If * wins, it will be virtually impossible for Buchanan and others to 'take the party' back... They dislike the direction the country is headed as much as we do. If, on the other hand, JFK wins... the paleos will have plenty of time and means to restructure. Posted by: Jo on October 21, 2004 07:45 PM

We were planning to call Kerry Headquarters in some of the more Republican areas like the panhandle, etc. What's your take on this? We will ship them out in the next 2 days and pay shipping costs. He lifted his shirt and showed me a scar on his back put there by young George. "He burned this into my flesh with a red-hot poker," he said solemnly, "and I have hated him ever since. That jackass was born cruel. He burned me in the back while I was blindfolded. This scar will be with me forever." There is nothing new or secret about that story. It ran on the front page of the Yale Daily News and caused a nasty scandal for a few weeks, but nobody was ever expelled for it. George did his first cover-up job. And he liked it. WV,Shylurker, Jo, Old Granny....and anyone else I can't think of by name from the 60's....time to throw dead rats over the fence on Penn. Ave....more from Hunter Thompson, who still ROCKS.... "Back in June, when John Kerry was beginning to feel like a winner, I had a quick little rendezvous with him on a rain-soaked runway in Aspen, Colorado, where he was scheduled to meet with a harem of wealthy campaign contributors. As we rode to the event, I told him that Bush's vicious goons in the White House are perfectly capable of assassinating Nader and blaming it on him. His staff laughed, but the Secret Service men didn't. Kerry quickly suggested that I might make a good running mate, and we reminisced about trying to end the Vietnam War in 1972. That was the year I first met him, at a riot on that elegant little street in front of the White House. He was yelling into a bullhorn and I was trying to throw a dead, bleeding rat over a black-spike fence and onto the president's lawn. We were angry and righteous in those days, and there were millions of us. We kicked two chief executives out of the White House because they were stupid warmongers. We conquered Lyndon Johnson and we stomped on Richard Nixon -- which wise people said was impossible, but so what? It was fun. We were warriors then, and our tribe was strong like a river." That river is still running. All we have to do is get out and vote, while it's still legal, and we will wash those crooked warmongers out of the White House. It's important that we listen carefully to the honest voices of those closest to our Iraq catastrophe. Here's one not to be missed. Tom
I am not a pacifist. I am a mother. By nature, the two are incompatible, for even a cottontail rabbit will fight to protect her young. Violent action may well be necessary in defense of one's family or home (and that definition of home can easily be extended to community and beyond); but violence, no matter how warranted, always takes a heavy toll. And violence taken to the extreme -- war -- exacts the most extreme costs. A just war there may be, but there is no such thing as a good war. And the burdens of an unjust war are insufferable. I know something about the costs of an unjust war, for my son, Nick -- an infantryman in the U.S. Army -- is fighting one in Iraq. I don't speak for my son. I couldn't even if I wanted to, for all I hear through the Mom Filter is: "I'm fine, Mom, don't worry, I'm fine, everything is fine, fine, fine, we're fine, just fine". But I can tell you what some of the costs are as I live and breathe them. First, the minor stuff: my constant feelings of dread and despair; the sweeping rage that alternates with petrifying fear; the torrents of tears that accompany a maddening sense of helplessness and vulnerability. My son is involved in a deadly situation that should never have been. I feel like a mother lion in a cage, my grown cub in danger, and all I can do is throw myself furiously against the bars…impotent to protect him. My tolerance for bullshit is zero, and I've snapped off more heads in the last several months than in all my 48 years combined. For the first time in my life, and with great amazement and sorrow, I feel what can only be described as hatred. It took me a long time to admit it, but there it is. I loathe the hubris, the callousness, and the lies of those in the Bush administration who led us into this war. Truth be told, I even loathe the fallible and very human purveyors of those lies. I feel no satisfaction in this admission, only sadness and recognition. And hope that --given time -- I can do better. I never wanted to hate anyone. Xanax helps a bit. At least it holds the debilitating panic attacks somewhat at bay, so I can fake it through one more day. A friend in the same situation relies on a six pack of beer every night; another has drifted into a la-la land of denial. Nice. Then there is the wedge that's been driven between part of my extended family and me. They don't see this war as one based on lies. They've become evangelical believers in a false faith, swallowing Bush's fear mongering, his chicken-hawk posturing and strutting, and cheering his "bring ‘em on" attitude as a sign of strength and resoluteness. Perhaps life is just easier that way. These are the same people who have known my son since he was a baby, who have held him and loved him and played with him, who have bought him birthday presents and taken him fishing. I don't know them anymore. But enough of my whining. My son is alive and in one piece, unlike the 1,102 dead and 7,782 severely wounded American soldiers; which equals 8,884 blood soaked uniforms, and doesn't even count the estimated 20,000 troops-- not publicly reported by the Department of Defense-- medivaced out of Iraq for "non-combat related injuries." Every death, every injury burns like a knife in my gut, for these are all America's sons and daughters. And I know I'm not immune to that knock on my door either. And what of the Iraqi people? How many casualties have they suffered? How many tens of thousands dead and wounded? How many Iraqi mothers have wept, weep now, for their lost children? I fear we will never know, for though the Pentagon has begun --almost gleefully -- counting Iraqi insurgent deaths, there is little chance of getting an accurate verification of civilian casualties. You know, "collateral damage." Yes, my son is alive and, as far as I know, well. I wish I could say the same for some of his friends. One young man who was involved in heavy fighting during the invasion is now so debilitated by post-traumatic stress disorder that he routinely has flashbacks in which he smells burning flesh; he can't close his eyes without seeing people's heads squashed like frogs in the middle of the road, or dead and dying women and children, burned, bleeding and dismembered. Sometimes he hears the sounds of battle raging around him, and he has been hospitalized twice for suicidal tendencies. When he was home on leave, this 27 year old man would crawl into his mother's room at night and sob in her lap for hours. Instead of getting treatment for PTSD, he has just received a "less than honorable" discharge from the Army. The rest of his unit redeploys to Iraq in February. Another friend of Nick's was horrifically wounded when his Humvee stopped on an IED. He didn't even have time to instinctively raise his arm and protect his face. Shrapnel ripped through his right eye, obliterating it to gooey shreds, and penetrated his brain. He has been in a coma since March. His mother spends every day with him in the hospital; his wife is devastated, and their 1½ year old daughter doesn't know her daddy. But my son's friend is a fighter and so is making steady, incremental progress toward consciousness. He has a long hard struggle ahead of him, one that he need never have faced -- and his family has had to fight every step of the way to get him the treatment he needs. So much for supporting the troops. I go visit him every week and it breaks my heart to see the burned faces, the missing limbs, the limps, the vacant stares one encounters in an acute-care military hospital. In front of the hospital there is a cannon, and every afternoon they blast that sucker off. You should see all the poor guys hit the pavement. Though many requests have been made to discontinue the practice for the sake of the returning wounded, the general in charge refuses. Boom. Then there is Nick's 24 year old Kurdish friend, the college-educated son of teachers, multilingual and highly intelligent. He works as a translator for the U.S. Army for $600 a month and lives on base, where he is relatively safe. (Translators for private contractors, also living on base, make $7200 a month). He wants to travel to the States to continue his education, but no visas are now being issued from Iraq. Once the army is through with him, will they just send him back into the streets, a virtual dead man for having worked with the Americans? My son places a high premium on loyalty to family and friends, and he has been raised to walk his talk. This must be a harsh and embittering lesson on just how unprincipled the rest of the world can be. My heart aches for his Iraqi friend as well as for him. A year ago in January, when Nick left for Iraq, I granted myself permission to be stark raving mad for the length of his deployment. By god, I've done a good job of it, without apology or excuse. And I dare say there are at least 139,999 other moms who have done the same -- though taking troop rotations into consideration to maintain that magical number of 140,000 in the sand could put the number of crazed military moms as high as 300,000, maybe more. Right now, you might want to be careful about cutting in line in front of a middle-aged woman. I know there are military moms who view the war in Iraq through different ideological lenses than mine. Sometimes I envy them. God, how much easier it must be to believe one's son or daughter is fighting for a just and noble cause! But no matter how hard I scrutinize the invasion and occupation of Iraq, all I see are lies, corruption, and greed fueled by a powerful addiction to oil. Real soldiers get blown to tatters in their "Hummers," so that well-heeled American suburbanites can play in theirs. For my family and me, the costs of this war are real and not abstract. By day, I fight my demons of dreaded possibility, beat them back into the shadows, into the dark recesses of my mind. Every night, they hiss and whisper a vile prognosis of gloom and desolation. I order the voices into silence, but too often they laugh at and mock my commands. I wonder if George Bush ever hears these voices. And I wonder, too…just how much are we willing to pay for a gallon of gas? Differnce between Bush and Kerry supporters.... The blind leading the blind Even if they don't like to say it out loud, lots of Democrats think that George Bush's supporters are a horde of ignoramuses. Now comes evidence that they're right! A remarkable new report, titled "The Separate Realities of Bush and Kerry Supporters," from PIPA, the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland, suggests that rank and file Republicans are more benighted than even the most supercilious coastal elitist would imagine. Analyzing data from a series of nationwide polls, the report finds that a majority of Bush supporters believe things about the world that are objectively untrue, while the majority of Kerry supporters dwell in the reality-based community. For example, Bush backers largely think that the president and his policies are popular internationally. Seventy-five percent believe that Iraq was providing "substantial" aid to al-Qaida, and 63 percent say clear evidence of this has been found. That, of course, would be news even to Donald Rumsfeld, who earlier this month told the Council on Foreign Relations, "To my knowledge, I have not seen any strong, hard evidence that links the two." Though its language is dispassionate, the report lays responsibility for this epidemic of ignorance at the White House's door. "So why are Bush supporters clinging so tightly to these beliefs in the face of repeated disconfirmations?" it asks. "Apparently one key reason is that they continue to hear the Bush administration confirming these beliefs." Indeed, it says, "an overwhelming 82% [of Bush supporters] perceive the Bush administration as saying that Iraq had WMD (63%) or a major WMD program (19%). Only 16% of Bush supporters perceive the administration as saying that Iraq had some limited activities, but not an active program (15%) or had nothing (1%). The pattern on al Qaeda is similar. Seventy-five percent of Bush supporters think the Bush administration is currently saying Iraq was providing substantial support to al Qaeda (56%) or even that it was directly involved in 9/11 (19%). Further, 55% of Bush supporters say it is their impression the Bush administration is currently saying the US has found clear evidence Saddam Hussein was working closely with al Qaeda (not saying clear evidence found: 37%)." These people aren't going to be swayed by the argument that Bush has alienated America's allies and left the country isolated in the world, because they don't believe this to be the case. "Despite a steady flow of official statements, public demonstrations, and public opinion polls showing that the US war against Iraq is quite unpopular, only 31% of Bush supporters recognize that the majority of people in the world oppose the US having gone to war with Iraq," the study says. Bush supporters also think that world public opinion favors Bush's reelection. In a poll taken from Sept. 3-7, the study says, "57% of Bush supporters assumed that the majority of people in the world would prefer to see Bush reelected, 33% assumed that views are evenly divided and only 9% assumed that Kerry would be preferred." In fact, a PIPA study released in early September found that a majority or plurality of people from 32 countries preferred Kerry to Bush. PIPA surveyed 34,330 people, ages 15 and above, from regions all over the world. A Pew poll released this spring similarly found that "large majorities in every country, except for the U.S., hold an unfavorable opinion of Bush." Bush supporters are also mistaken about the president's own positions (a pattern of misapprehension that an earlier PIPA report also documented). "Majorities incorrectly assumed that Bush supports multilateral approaches to various international issues -- the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty (69%), the treaty banning land mines (72%); 51% incorrectly assumed he favors US participation in the Kyoto treaty -- the principal international accord on global warming ... Only 13% of supporters are aware that he opposes labor and environmental standards in trade agreements -- 74% incorrectly believe that he favors including labor and environmental standards in agreements on trade. In all these cases, there is a recurring theme: majorities of Bush supporters favor these positions, and they infer that Bush favors them as well." According to the report, this reality gap is something new in American life. "So why do Bush supporters show such a resistance to accepting dissonant information?" it asks. "While it is normal for people to show some resistance, the magnitude of the denial goes beyond the ordinary. Bush supporters have succeeded in suppressing awareness of the findings of a whole series of high-profile reports about prewar Iraq that have been blazoned across the headlines of newspapers and prompted extensive, high-profile and agonizing reflection. The fact that a large portion of Americans say they are unaware that the original reasons that the US took military action -- and for which Americans continue to die on a daily basis -- are not turning out to be valid, are probably not due to a simple failure to pay attention to the news." The analysis says that the roots of this denial could lie in the trauma of 9/11 and people's desire to hold on to their image of Bush as a "capable protector." It offers no guidance, though, on how ordinary Republicans might be coaxed back to reality. And while "The Separate Realities of Bush and Kerry Supporters" may be perversely satisfying to Democrats in its confirmation of blue-state prejudices, it carries a pretty disturbing question for all rational Americans: How can arguments based on fact prevail in a nation where so many people know so little? -- Michelle Goldberg Posted by judi gemini at October 21, 2004 09:41 PM Thank you, Judi, for this. Posted by: judi gemini on October 21, 2004 11:30 PMRe last night’s visualization: Lay down on the bed and went into meditation mode. Slowly. Slowly...finally I settled down. After getting all clear inside my head, these pictures emerged. Sort of the essense of Kerry(like a kind of an embodied light which was sort of in the shape of Kerry, almost like a flame) on a kind of platform about three feet off the floor. In front of this light-of-Kerry were John Edwards, slightly to the right of center, and Elizabeth Edwards who was standing behind John and to his right(in the picture I saw). They were in a sort of “wing” formation in front of Kerry, like pillars supporting, like the prow of a ship, breaking the waves. Like battering rams. Like the solid representatives. John and Elizabeth were very sharp and very clear, appearing just as they do. THK was over slightly to the left and she was not as clear, but a strong, supportive presence as well. A quiet energy, like I feel coming from her when I see her. I focused on that for some time, then went off in my mind and did something else. When I came back to this image(above) I opened my heart chakra and offered any assistance I could. Felt like a broad cord of energy going out from my body to the image. I’m going to spend some more time tonight, and I’m going to try to post my comments, along with the pictures. Don't know that I'll come up with anything concrete, but it might be fun to look at, anyway. Sally: What happened in last night’s visualization, I think, was the first period I just focused on what came. The second time I asked how I could help. That’s when my heart opened up. I thought later about your posting of the Pluto period next year and how potentially difficult and dangerous it may be for Kerry. My thoughts were that I would help any way I could, do anything I could to help. Arnold Schwarzenegger confessing that his wife cut him off for two weeks after his speech at the Republican convention and San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom's wife bragging to a New York audience about her husband's size -- and how she keeps him happy. First up, the Governator -- who even after nearly one year in office is proving that he is far from your typical scripted, overprepped American politician. In a Q&A with former White House Chief of Staff and ex-Rep. Leon Panetta in Monterey, the host asked Schwarzenegger how his famously Democratic wife, Maria Shriver, had reacted to his speech supporting President Bush at the Republican National Convention. "Well, there was no sex for 14 days,'' the governor told the thousand- person audience. "Everything comes with side effects.'' The crowd at the Panetta Institute laughed loudly, and so did Panetta. "I think we'll move right along,'' Panetta said. That wasn't the only glimpse the governor offered into his bipartisan marriage. "I don't even know why I should watch the presidential debates," he said at one point. "If I want to see a liberal Democrat -- a smart, liberal Democrat -- and a Republican leader argue, we just go out for dinner. "Fortunately for Bush and Kerry, they were lucky they only had to (debate) three times. I have to do it every morning when I get up.'' Even if they don't like to say it out loud, lots of Democrats think that George Bush's supporters are a horde of ignoramuses. -- Michelle Goldberg Posted by: Nancy on October 22, 2004 02:56 AMWelcome back Dommael, Here is a good collection of facts on current fascism. http://www.oldamericancentury.org/14pts.htm Posted by: Pat C on October 22, 2004 03:48 AMWell, I am now looking at this site as my only window to the outside world. Posted by: Sally on October 22, 2004 04:10 AMSorry about posting that Salon article that was already posted. I put it up and then went back to catch up on the thread. I tend to think a Virgo MC fits Kerry well, square Saturn, Sun, and Moon, and with the ruler, Mercury, square Neptune, sextile Venus, and quincunx Uranus. It makes sense that the MC has lots of action. I have never been comfortable with a Venus ruled Libra MC conjunct Neptune. That would fit someone with a more nebulous career path, and I don't see the Venus influence either. He seems more ambitious (Saturn and Sun) and very focused (Saturn) regarding career issues. Andhis reputation is one of someone very serious, straight, and ambitious. That also doesn't sound like Neptune /Libra to me. Granny - I would be very interested to see where your "hand" study leads. The republicans brought in people from outside the state this week because our early poll voting started. Today two of the Republican poll watchers refused to identify themselves as what they are and just said they were observers, until I got out of them that they were lying and who they were. One of them, tried to stop me from handing out "palm voting tickets" to those who wanted them, by telling me I was on County land and doing an illegal thing and he was going to have me arrested. I questioned him as to who he was , several questions, and he continued to try to obscure by being vicious, nasty and attempting to intimidate me. I also had him admit he was a lawyer. He did this in front of voters to create a scene and fear, and also said he was going to have me arrested if he ever heard me tell people again they could drop off their completed absentee I FOUND A COP, pointed him out, and told the cop how he had threatened me and harrassed me. Another fellow came over and told the cop how the same fellow was intimidating and harrassing Afro Americans inside the voting area. I found the Democratic Lawyer poll watcher inside and we both And the cop came out and asked if I was going to be there tomorrow - saying I was very pleasant. :) Another big hee hee hee. But in all seriousness, the Republicans who were sent in from out of state are there to harrass and intimidate. That's their plan of action. It didn't work with me, but I'm concerned about other volunteers who might not be able to stand up to such attacks. With Jupiter and Venus doing good things in my chart currently - I can practically do no wrong - but Mars is approaching an aspect that could give me some trouble on the 27th or 28th. BTW, I'll be at John Edwards' rally tomorrow (isn't he wonderful plus adorable? And the word around here is that Big Dawg - Bill Clinton - is coming here to speechify on the 26th. I've been promised a ticket as close to him as possible. I adore Big Dawg of course and am thrilled that he's coming to Florida. Although we all worry that this will be too much too soon for him after his operation, I also have the feeling that the adoration of the crowds will help him heal that much faster. More later. And please send some white light - I sure don't want to get arrested, and I suspect I've angered those nasty republican beasts who've been sent here. Astonishing how aggressive and rude they are. You bet there's going to be a fight over who wins the election.....and up to no good they are. Oh and by the way, here's the good news: It's looking good for Kerry - but there is nothing, nothing, I wouldn't put past the current sick crop of republicans. Cost: $30 (Cdn.). As it happened, I was getting my flu shot the other day at my local walk-in clinic, and was sitting next to a guy from California. He was in Seattle on business, had heard about this phenomenon, and had driven up. He was originally from Czechoslovakia, and had voted Republican since getting US citizenship. He was talking about how angered he was by the screw-up with the vaccines in the States, and about the whole disparity between drug prices between Canada and the US. He was leaning towards Kerry because of this. He started asking me about the Canadian system, and I started extolling its virtues. To my delight, an older woman nearby overheard us, and chimed in with her support. Bottom line - before he went in to get his shot, he said "I just don't think I can support Bush this year." I think the whole drug importation/flu shot thing might be very big for the Dems this year. Posted by: judi gemini on October 22, 2004 06:59 AMAnd while "The Separate Realities of Bush and Kerry Supporters" may be perversely satisfying to Democrats in its confirmation of blue-state prejudices, it carries a pretty disturbing question for all rational Americans: How can arguments based on fact prevail in a nation where so many people know so little? The human mind is amazing in its ability to rationalize; people don't want to think that what they believe is incorrect, so they end up mounting layer upon layers of fallacy to protect themselves from embarassment. Think of how shocking it will be to many of them one day when the light comes on, and they realize, "Hey, what I've believed all my life just isn't true." In the case of the Bushies, I think many of these folks are duped into thinking that Bush is going to give them a tax cut, and that ends up supporting the other fallacies they end up with. Of course, for some, the core issue is abortion or gay rights. So here comes this guy talking like a bubba, in real simple language; next thing you know, he's snookered just about everybody into thinking he's going to give them what they want, and nothing else matters. It doesn't seem to matter that what he wants to give them is not really in their best interests, or that they may end up getting the opposite of what they think they wanted. For example, if Bush really does succeed in restructuring the tax code, chances are, they're going to pay more in taxes, not less. Then there's talk radio, teaching people to viscerally disdain anyone with a D by their name. I don't know what the solution for this, either, other than to keep talking to them, if you can stand to (I admit that for me, that's hard to do, too hard, for most of us). The challenge is to find a way to connect with these folks on an emotional level, since that's where they're at. I suspect that all that blue and white light that we're sending will help bring some people to the light. It won't be easy, but that's what we hope for, and what we'll probably need if we want to build the force that will bring positive change. This board has been very positive today. I hope y'all don't mind these observations from eighth-grade psychology (or maybe third-grade, I don't know). Keep visualizing winning, and keep standing up for what is right, and we will win! The challenge is to find a way to connect with these folks on an emotional level, since that's where they're at. Old Granny, You have any ideas on what we can do to help Kerry now and after the inauguration? V V notes, Thursday night, Oct. 21: When I came to getting settled into my Kerry picture...the first thing that came was a long dark bank of clouds across the far horizon. I was scared at first, and then said “OK...whatever comes. I’ll go with whatever comes.” The clouds just sat there, unmoving, but a dark presence. It was like I was looking down from a higher vantage point across this scene. John Kerry was standing on a low stage, facing out diagonally to the clouds to the right. He was very focused on the process of creating something, rehearsing a speech, or going through the steps for something, using his hands to make the words in his mind. He had a light...white or very light blue...shirt on and the sleeves were rolled up. And he was standing in a beam of light coming down in an angle from the sky to the left. All alone, but totally unconcerned of this, or even unaware of it. That was the only image I saw. Then spent the rest of the period working on manifesting what I wanted locally working first close and then farther out. ______________

Posted by: Pat C on October 22, 2004 04:02 PMNancy, in rectifying John Kerry's birthchart, here's my 2 cents for what it's worth - I find him to have a very strong Saturnine appearance(especially his face), very much like Abraham Lincoln, even though his initials are the same as JFK, and he himself aligns himself more with that particular President, I find him more Lincolnesque in appearance, which leads me to believe that either the planet Saturn, or the signs Capricorn/Aquarius has a strong influence on his ascendant. Hope he doesn't suffer the same fate as Lincoln though. You can also see how the natal horoscopes of both presidential candidates define their differences in the way they think and view the world. Kerry, the consummate diplomat, is a man of peace, embraces foreign countries and cultures, and views the world in global terms in which global cooperation is an important factor. This comes from the strong Jupiter/Sag. influence in his chart, which also bestows his qualities of sportsmanship. Bush, on the other hand, personifies the true "politician" -slick, and with the ability to twist words and interpret actions to suit the occasion, and advance his political ideologies. He is a man of war and views the world only through an American lens. Garry, that was truly funny. Haha. VOTING AND COUNTING October 22, 2004 - If the election were held today and the votes were counted fairly, Senator John Kerry would probably win. But the votes won't be counted fairly, and the disenfranchisement of minority voters may determine the outcome. ... Last week I described Greg Palast's work on the 2000 election, reported recently in Harper's, which conclusively shows that Florida was thrown to Mr. Bush by a combination of factors that disenfranchised black voters. These included a defective felon list, which wrongly struck thousands of people from the voter rolls, and defective voting machines, which disproportionately failed to record votes in poor, black districts. One might have expected Florida's government to fix these problems during the intervening four years. But most of those wrongly denied voting rights in 2000 still haven't had those rights restored - and the replacement of punch-card machines has created new problems. After the 2000 debacle, a task force appointed by Gov. Jeb Bush recommended that the state adopt a robust voting technology that would greatly reduce the number of spoiled ballots and provide a paper trail for recounts: paper ballots read by optical scanners that alert voters to problems. This system is in use in some affluent, mainly white Florida counties. But Governor Bush ignored this recommendation, just as he ignored state officials who urged him to "pull the plug" on a new felon list - which was quickly discredited once a judge forced the state to make it public - just days before he ordered the list put into effect. Instead, much of the state will vote using touch-screen machines that are unreliable and subject to hacking, and leave no paper trail. Mr. Palast estimates that this will disenfranchise 27,000 voters - disproportionately poor and black. A lot can change in 11 days, and Mr. Bush may yet win convincingly. But we must not repeat the mistake of 2000 by refusing to acknowledge the possibility that a narrow Bush win, especially if it depends on Florida, rests on the systematic disenfranchisement of minority voters. And the media must not treat such a suspect win as a validation of skewed reporting that has consistently overstated Mr. Bush's popular support. http://www.winbackrespect.org/ads/

Have special USPS drop boxes inside banks and at the post offices only for voting and only available for that week once every four years. Would that remove all the problems. I'm dead sure it would be cheaper. Posted by: on October 22, 2004 10:34 PMBreaking News in from dKos!... and you ain't gonna believe this one! ------------------ The Body Endorses The Real Deal Endorsements by individual politicians may not matter a whole lot in most cases -- I mean, look at all the good that Gore endorsement did for Dean. Most pols don't have a fervent personal following who will seriously change their minds about a race because of their leader's endorsement. In short, a pol's endorsement is often just another vote, not much different from yours or mine. Jesse Ventura, on the other hand, isn't "most pols." He's a unique phenomenon, the anti-politician even after serving four years as Governor of Minnesota. Right or wrong, he brought a fiercely independent spirit to the political arena, and he attracted support from a constituency that often sits out electoral politics. Unlike Ahnold, he isn't a party hack, and he never compromised his independent voice. As a result, he still retains the allure, for some Minnesotans, of the last honest man in politics. For that reason, Ventura is one of the very few pols whose endorsement might really count for something -- he may bring a class of voter who otherwise would sit this one out to the polls. And today he endorsed John Kerry. Not only might this motivate some non-voters to pull the lever for Kerry, but it may influence some white males otherwise likely to vote for Bush to really think twice about Kerry. We'll have to see what he says in the days ahead. In any event, I'm feeling a little better about Minnesota right now. Very disturbing Yahoo news article that asks the question whether the Associated Press could rig the election. http://biz.yahoo.com/prnews/041022/phf016_1.html?printer=1 (Sounds silly, but read the article). Just today, I have read almost a dozen separate pieces in counties, precincts and states across the U.S. that there are widespread voting problems even this early. (The reports from Albuquerque were very ominous.) Then, on What Really Happened, the blogger mentions that what if all these 'reported' problems are like a magician's ploy to distract the audience, taking their focus away from what's really happening to make the 'trick' happen. I've been wary of this for the past four years, but all this is beyond belief. Could all this be happening so that the elections have to be 'postponed' due to so many voting irregularities as to prevent certifiable results? Posted by: Susan on October 22, 2004 11:33 PMOK, Pallas 18. We shipped the lawn signs to Delray Beach Kerry Headquarters at 15128 Jog Road, Suite A (I called to get the exact address). The package will arrive by Wednesday (3-day ground was expensive - about 90 bucks). I wrote in magic marker on the outside of the box that it contains lawn signs (wire frames + plastic signs that cover the top). Could you please tell HQ to be on the lookout for it. Even more importantly, these should be distributed door-to-door as time is so short! I am sure you would think of that, but I hate to see the package of 40 or so signs & frames sitting in the corner somewhere at Kerry-Edwards HQ when they could be out there doing some good on someone's lawn in the last 6 days before the election. A little late but they may do some good in the beautiful BLUE State of Florida!!!! Think ocean, not oranges. John Kerry (news - web sites), bracing for a potential fight over election results, will not hesitate to declare victory Nov. 2 and defend it, advisers say. He also will be prepared to name a national security team before knowing whether he's secured the presidency. Six so-called "SWAT teams" of lawyers and political operatives will be situated around the country with fueled-up jets awaiting Kerry's orders to speed to a battleground state. The teams have been told to be ready to fly on the evening of the election to begin mounting legal and political fights. Every battleground state will have a SWAT team within an hour of its borders. The Kerry campaign has recount office space in every battleground state, with plans so detailed they include the number of staplers and coffee machines needed to mount legal challenges. "Right now, we have 10,000 lawyers out in the battleground states on Election Day, and that number is growing by the day," said Michael Whouley, a Kerry confidant who is running election operations at the Democratic National Committee (news - web sites).
Looks like we've nominated a fighter this time. From the Times-Record, Fort Smith Arkansas- • Arkansas Lawyers for Bush-Cheney ’04 started this summer to assemble a team of about 150 volunteer lawyers. • Astounding all reason, a group run by the Democratic Party of Arkansas has gathered nearly TWICE that, 275 lawyers and law students. (That’s right. Just in Arkansas.) • Nationwide, the Kerry campaign has more than 10,000 lawyers ready to spring to the candidate’s legal defense. • Republicans wouldn’t provide a specific number to our reporter Wednesday, but published reports say they will have attorneys ready in 30,000 precincts. The energies as we approach the weekend are heightened and tense around here. Edwards spoke today, Hillary is coming tomorrow, and Kerry will be here Sunday, and people are coming in looking for tickets for Kerry's speech. A man who contributed 25,000 to Kerry's campaign flew in from Oregon to our Kerry campaign office yesterday and is doing menial work, another couple came in from Boston and will be helping tomorrow, and going to Kerry's speech, others came in from New York . Graham to my letter written months back (August, I believe) with regard to the women and children still being detained. I haven't shared it yet because I am so disappointed. Some of us actually thought we could count on Graham to pursue this, as he is a Lt. Col in the Nat'l Guard. After the usual thank you, etc. he says this: "According to reports, there have been some teenagers detained at Abu Ghraib, who were suspected of criminal activity. While I sincerely recognize your concerns and believe we need to be very careful about how we approach detention issues at Abu Ghraib, I also understand that there is a need to detain individuals who are a threat to American troops and freedom-loving Iraqis. Please be assured that I will continue to monitor Abu Ghraib to ensure that detainees are treated humanely and in accordance with international law." All the news that's untrue to print. :) By Thomas R. Collins Nader backers arrested during Edwards speech in Tamarac BOYNTON BEACH — Vice presidential candidate John Edwards, flashing his pearly-whites, glad-handed and Bush-bashed his way through a Boynton Beach campaign stop late this morning, speaking to about 750 adoring supporters at the Ezell Hester Jr. Community Center. Edwards stood at a podium in a gym and walked around a platform made to look like a boxing ring with the words "Fighting For Us" written on it. But it was more like a back-alley fistfight than a pro-boxing bout — the gloves were off. At the start, he described his favorite moment of the presidential debates, from the second one, a town-hall-style duel in St. Louis. "George Bush himself asked an important question in that debate," Edwards said. "The question was: 'Is my time up yet?' " When the ensuing raucous cheers died down, Edwards said, "Yes, George Bush, your time is up." Edwards went on to promise that presidential candidate John Kerry would reduce health-care costs, would not "outsource" the country's security, would invest in innovative energy sources to reduce the reliance on Middle East oil, and would give support troops in overseas battle and keep the country safe. He accused Republicans of campaigning on fear and warned already worried Florida voters to be wary of attempts to keep people from the polls. One new ad in particular drew Edwards' wrath. The commercial shows a dense forest and wolves resting on a hill. The animals stir and move forward, and an announcer says: "Weakness attracts those who are waiting to do America harm." Speaking at a rally in this battleground state, Edwards said, "They have stooped so low now that they are using a pack of wolves running around a forest trying to scare you and trying to scare the American people." "The president is continuing to try to scare America in his speeches and ads in a despicable and contemptible way. The American people are smarter than they think. They are going to see through all this," Edwards said. When Edwards shook hands afterward, women swooned. Then he left the gym, the song "Johnny Be Good" blaring in the background. The stop was the first of five planned today and Saturday. He goes next to Tamarac, then Jacksonville. On Saturday, he will campaign in Orlando and St. Petersburg, while President Bush stumps in St. Petersburg, Lakeland, Melbourne and Jacksonville. Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry will be at Florida Atlantic University in Boca Raton on Sunday. The second total lunar eclipse of 2004 is visible from the Americas, Europe, most of Africa, and western Asia on the night of October 27/28. Canada and the continental US will see all of totality (weather permitting), but Hawaii will experience only a partial eclipse, as the Moon rises after totality has ended. At 9:14 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time on the 27th the Earth's umbra touches the left side of the Moon. The dark notch grows until it covers the entire lunar surface at 10:23 p.m. Since the envelope of air surrounding our planet bends some of the Sun's light into the Earth's shadow, the Moon will probably remain visible during totality. If our atmosphere is relatively clear, the Moon will be bathed in the reddish glow from sunrises and sunsets around the world. But if the air is thick with clouds, the Moon may look dull grey and dim. Totality ends at 11:45 p.m., and the Moon departs the Earth's umbra at 12:54 a.m. Venus enters Libra joining Mars and Jupiter in that sign.. Saros series 136 started on April 13th 1680. The chart set for the central eclipse moment of this first eclipse is shown above. The series lasts for 1280 years, ending in 2960. The series went Total in 1950, today's eclipse is the 4th Total Eclipse in the series and it is the 19th of the 72 eclipses in the series. The Saros peaks in 2293 AD.
Venus enters Libra 00-39 GMT. A 'mystic pentagram' forms in the skies today involving the Moon, Saturn, Jupiter, Pluto and Uranus. This brief and tight planetary picture peaks around 03-00 GMT. In Seminole County, for example, Democrats make up 31.7 percent of the registered voters but 40 percent of the early voters. The same was true in Republican-leaning Brevard County, where Fred Galey, supervisor of elections, said that he had no specific figures but that "many more Democrats" are casting ballots than Republicans. In Osceola County, a Democratic bastion, Democrats are turning out for early voting in higher percentages than their share of registered voters, while Republicans are below their registration levels. Now we know, from their own words, that the Bush Regime is a cult -- a cult whose god is Power, whose adherents believe that they alone control reality, that indeed they create the world anew with each act of their iron will. And the goal of this will -- undergirded by the cult's supreme virtues of war, fury and blind faith -- is likewise openly declared: "Empire." You think this is an exaggeration? Then heed the words of the White House itself: a "senior adviser" to the president, who, as The New York Times reports, explained the cult to author Ron Suskind in the heady pre-war days of 2002. First, the top Bush insider mocked the journalist and all those "in what we call the reality-based community," i.e., people who "believe that solutions emerge from your judicious study of discernible reality." Suskind's attempt to defend the principles of reason and enlightenment cut no ice with the Bush-man. "That's not the way the world really works anymore. We're an empire now, and when we act, we create our own reality," he said. "And while you're studying that reality, we'll act again, creating other new realities, which you can study too, and that's how things will sort out. The only way we can fight back against this media dominance by corporations is to elect John Kerry and send the puppet Bush back to the bush-whacked country in Texas he loves. Of course, the mainstream media ignored us, but that scene you see in "Farenheit 9/11," where anti-Bush protesters were five or six deep lining Bush's route up Pennsylvania Avenue, were absolutely accurate. I was there. I saw it. And that same film showed briefly on local DC News. Bush was so terrified at the opposition crowds facing him on both sides that his limo stopped dead for several minutes, while the Secret Service consulted with parade police, then suddenly the presidential limo took off at a sufficient speed that the Secret Service couldn't keep up and were left running on foot well behind the presidential limos. No one could see Bush or his party through the darkened limo windows, but if I've ever seen a coward tuck tail and run, it was during Bush's procession to the White House which he was illegally occupying. The crowds out there were reminding him of that, and he couldn't deal with that. Since his inauguration he's been protected by a bubble so that he never has to confront those Americans who don't agree with him. Posted by: Pat C on October 23, 2004 07:15 PMBy the way, Pallas (or anyone else who knows the answer), when you speak about voting by paper ballot in Florida, do you mean absentee ballot? Or is there another way to ask for a paper ballot? I have one friend in FL (and hopefully there are more - I've lived there almost 30 years) who has asked me how to vote by paper ballot. If you were referring to an absentee ballot, is it too late to go that route? Regarding Pat's post just above, I don't think Jo Ann Simon will feel so alone this time. I hope & pray (and send white light) that, should there be any reason to protest, people will be discipined enough to protest peacefully. Hopefully there will be no reason to protest and we all will be gleefully, bluefully, celebrating a new direction for the U.S.!!! :-) :-) :-) Thanks, Amen, Sharon. You have a friend in New Orleans. I just got an idea. Do y'all remember that post from Salon.com, about the survey by PIPA, the Program on International Policy Attitudes at the University of Maryland? You know, the one entitled "The Separate Realities of Bush and Kerry Supporters," the one that said that most Bush supporters believe (incorrectly) that Bush supports the Kyoto Treaty. Does anybody on this board know if they have put these questions in the form a true-false quiz--or would consider doing so-- one with an explanation of the correct answers? I would think that a true-false quiz on this stuff would be a tremendous service, and maybe some of those Bush supporters who are still using a little more upstairs than their amygdalas might learn something! Hmm, maybe I'll do a Google search, and see what I find out... Posted by: Gina on October 23, 2004 08:33 PMRe: Bush hitting the campaign trail hard. If you have one mailed to you, then you have to request it in time for it to reach you and be returned before 7PM Nov. 2. My political blog is Political Physics at http://politicalphysics.typepad.com/ There are some articles and links there re: the Florida situation, our ability to take back the Senate, a lot on the various forms of voter intimidation and disenfranchisement, and other things of interest, including a few really funny links you're guaranteed to enjoy in this serious season of screaming heads. The Aquarius Papers is located at http://blogs.salon.com/0003573 and is more astrological and metaphysical, but also has a political relevance, since I have many articles there on Bush, Kerry, and the election. I'll be checking back in over the next few days and weeks since this is an awesome blog! Aum and blessings - we're actually better off than we think! Posted by: Robert on October 24, 2004 02:25 AMSharon and all: "By the way, Pallas (or anyone else who knows the answer), when you speak about voting by paper ballot in Florida, do you mean absentee ballot? Or is there another way to ask for a paper ballot?" I can't speak for other than Palm Beach County - but 1) It's too late to get an absentee ballot unless you had already asked for it to be sent to you. Many who had asked STILL haven't received it. I think the last day was to request the absentee ballot here was Oct 18, the day early voting started. 2) In Palm Beach County at the Supervisor of Elections Office in each city you can demand a paper ballot instead of using the electronic machine. We are reccomending that, at least in our early voting, because on Nov. 2 they may not have any or enough paper ballots for the voters. Paper ballots leave a paper trail for recount - voting machines here have no paper trail of the individual vote...just a total - which of course cannot be trusted now that we know how the As far as volunteering for poll watching, here in Palm Beach County you would have had to have volunteered and been certified by the end of last Pallas18 Posted by: Pallas18 on October 24, 2004 02:40 AMSharon, you and your husband could offer to drive people to the polls, or answer phones on voting day. But we have an advantage... we have been there before... we know to expect the unexpected, the unpredictable, the absolute unimaginable from them. Awareness is a mighty tool. You stay 'aware' - not simply to the political situation, but keep yourself safe. I'm sure you know your home has been invaded by folks who do not mind creating havoc. Keep your eyes and ears open. Never occured to me that a suggestion on a blog could be the key! Way to go Astroworld! But the synergy of having the impulse even before the suggestion was made, to me just signifies the strength of the energetic connection moving us all toward this shared destiny. Here's a very interesting article (please read!) about a REAL hero at the WTC on 9-11, who has decided to sue Bush: "He has commenced, as Plaintiff, a federal court lawsuit against George W. Bush, Richard B. Cheney, Donald H. Rumsfeld and others alleging that they and others were complicit in the 9-11 attacks, and either planned the attacks, or had foreknowledge of the attacks and permitted them to succeed, in order to exploit a “New Pearl Harbor” to launch wars against Afghanistan and Iraq." Posted by: Jo on October 24, 2004 12:41 PMRe the endorsements... Sally wrote somewhat earlier that her brother wrote that folks in Kansas were very surprised at the Kansas City Star's(I hope I have this right) endorsement of Kerry. According to the endorsement site: Kerry now leads Bush 70-58 in endorsements in E&P's exclusive tally, and by about 11.9 million to 7.1 million in the circulation of backing papers.
Meanwhile, E&P has learned from several sources at the Cleveland Plain Dealer that the paper's nine-person editorial board decided earlier this week that it wanted to endorse Kerry but Publisher Alex Machaskee, who has final say, has decided on Bush. The paper backed Bush in 2000. This has caused consternation in some quarters at the Plain Dealer, with sources telling E&P that the endorsement editorial, which was expected to run Sunday, was put off.
Interesting too to know that Kerry [has picked up 17 Bush papers from 2000, while losing only two Gore papers to Bush.] I have to think about the night's V V pictures this time. Real different and I have to get clear first. Maybe I'll post mine later. OG http://www.editorandpublisher.com/eandp/news/article_display.jsp?vnu_content_id=1000683265 Daily Endorsement Tally: On 'Super Sunday,' Kerry Makes Huge Gains New York Senator John Kerry continued his raid on newspapers that backed President George W. Bush in 2000, grabbing 10 new "flip-flops," as well as The Washington Post. He has now won over at least 21 papers that went for Bush in 2000, while Bush has only earned two Gore papers. However, Bush got a real prize in Ohio, the Columbus Dispatch. Kerry now leads Bush 80-66 in endorsements in E&P's exclusive tally, and by about 12.6 million to 8.1 million in the circulation of backing papers. In gaining the Orlando Sentinel, one of the switches from Bush, Kerry completed a sweep of major papers in top swing stage, Florida. In another surprise, the Detroit News, which has never endorsed a Democrat, and backed Bush in 2000, announced that it would sit out the 2004 election, not happy with either candidate. Bush has lost at least four other papers to the "neutral" column in addition to those that switched to Kerry. The Chicago Sun-Times and the Los Angeles Daily News, which both backed Bush in 2000, also endorsed Kerry. But Bush gained the key Columbus paper. In an editorial it revealed it was "less than enthused about the choices." It said it was troubled by Bush's fiscal policies and the war in Iraq but said that neither Kerry's Senate record nor "his shifting positions during the presidential campaign inspire confidence that he would provide the strong, resolute leadership America desperately needs." Bush also picked up the Houston Chronicle and Denver Post, the latter in a switch from Gore in 2000. William Dean Singleton, now the publisher of that paper, is known as a strong Bush supporter. His MediaNews Group also owns the L.A. Daily News, which Singleton allowed to go for Kerry. More... Interesting times from Marjorie Orr http://www.star4cast.com/index.asp?page=heavenly_display.asp November is way too interesting. Posted by: Pat C on October 24, 2004 05:02 PMGot to post concerning the newspaper endorsements (a few posts above) and Bush winning the important backing of the Columbus Dispatch. Not so sure it is as important as one may think. I live in and was born in Central Ohio, i.e., Columbus. I grew up in a community, Upper Arlington (UA), that is the epitome of Bushworld. For example, Prez #41 has a cousin living on one of the most expensive streets in UA, grandfather Prescott was raised in Columbus, grandfather or great-grandfather founded one of the most exclusive country clubs in Central Ohio to which R. David Thomas, the founder of Wendy's who lived here could not join, and great grandfather or grandfather started one of the most exclusive private schools in the area. Additionally, the Bush family's holding of Buckeye Steel is significant because it may have been used during WW II to support their deals with the Germans. I could go on, but I think this sets the stage. Not surprised that Bush got the the Columbus Disgrace's endorsement (yes, Columbus Disgrace ... that is what we call it here). The paper, one tv and one radio station owned by a family that is, I am sure, very Repug. Even more importantly, I have been purposely driving through UA on my way home from work the last few months and am absolutely astounded at the number of Kerry/Edwards lawn signs. They went up earlier that the B/C signs. They are at least 50% of the lawn signs ... amazing in the heart of Bushworld. They are on the lawns of the most expensive as well as least expensive homes. Everyone I talk to in my age group, 50+ is beside themselves with the way Bush has and is administering. Some are Repugs who will be voting for Kerry. So, take heart, keep the faith ... if UA is this pro Kerry ... hope must be on the way. Blue Crystal Light, Charlene I'm a little hesitant to post this, as I'm sort of "new" to the board, but my V V was a little disturbing - though not entirely disheartening - and rather than wait til after others have posted I thought I'd go ahead and commit to mine. I began, trying to see Kerry first being sworn in. First thing I saw was Kerry suddenly stricken (I feared he'd been shot!) Healers began attending to it and I also approached and helped with the healing - something on the left side, abdominal. I had a sense that this was serious but not fatal - also don't think it was a gunshot. Something more organic, I think. I felt it receiving the healing... Then the whole thing started over, only this time I saw him as he reached the podium, smiled broadly and raised his right hand for the swearing in. Yay! Posted by: KM on October 24, 2004 05:45 PMThe LA Times goes straight to the heart of the matter. "The idea of the United States as an ironfisted theocracy is terrifying, and it should give everyone pause. This time, it's not about policy. This time, for the first time, it's about the nature of American government. That post about the Columbus paper shook me a little, but after reading your post I am much relieved. Astroworlders - wanted to share how the astrological knowledge I've been gleaning here helped out last night in a very "real life" matter. My 30-year old daughter called me, "just to talk". She's feeling very down the last couple of days - and as she started talking about how she felt I suddenly recalled the fact that we are between two eclipses, and I wondered whether these and the general planetary conditions might be one cause of this distress. (This young woman is a successful personal fitness consultant and a powerhouse who hasn't let anything stop her, so to hear her suddenly questioning the very meaning of her life was a little startling. Of course she is turning 30, and that's a milestone of its own - and I can see a life review accompanying the entry into this new life stage. But the focus of her present crisis was relationships...one in particular that has been very off and on over the past couple of years.) So, I mentioned these eclipses to her, and went to a monthly astrology report that I regularly read -- pulled up Scorpio, and voila! There it was, down to the tee!!! Her sudden withdrawal from public interaction, serious consideration of her life's direction, and the resurfacing/resolution of relationship issues that in her case have come to the surface with each of the eclipses in this latest series (the site said they spanned two years)! WOW!! Thanks for all the information that you all make available here - not only does it help with the difficult political situation we're in but you helped me to have an awareness that gave my daughter reassurance that I think she really needed last night. Knowing that this feeling was connected to something larger, something predictable, gave her a sense of calm and a renewed empowerment. Thanks again. Light to all... Since the Bush family was so intimately involved in the whole BCCI/Iran-Contra thing, Kerry is taking on far more than most people realize. I hope he has a small army of bodyguards. “There has never been a guy who has run for president who has, hands-on, known the kinds of substantive things he knows about the world of international crime, about banking and international bank regulation and finance, about the interconnectedness of the world finance system and how various intelligence agencies play into it. Who'll stop the rain Posted by: Pat C on October 24, 2004 07:06 PMDoes anyone here know what consequence comes of a person being registered to vote more than once? I read somewhere that just because you're registered more than once doesn't mean you can vote more than once. I have NO knowledge with which to evaluate this. Reason I ask is, it may be that with an all out registration effort there might be multiple opportunities for a person to register to vote: at a table in a public place, for example; or in response to door-to-door canvassers. No fraudulent intent is required for it to occur. Just a willingness of an individual to register multiple times (I dunno, bad memory - lack of education about the process, etc.) That would be different from registering fraudulent/fictional names, dead people, etc. And it would certainly be different from destroying registrations, right? OK, now my point: The Dems (ACORN) are being investigated for having duplicate registrations [and some dumbell thought to register folks like Mickey Mouse, etc. much to our shame and chagrin]. But the Repubs (Voters Outreach of America) are being investigated for DESTROYING registrations -- and to add another wrinkle, I believe that they were falsely representing themselves in some cases as America Votes (Dem group). In the first case, multiple registrations - not necessarily associated with multiple votes? Also a detectable and correctable situation I should think. In the second, however, a destroyed registration would effectively eliminate a legitimate voter. And since so many states have registration deadlines no chance for folks to take remedial action to re-register. The person's right to vote has truly been denied. Shouldn't the difference in outcomes for these two behaviors be highlighted when they are reported? I was considering sending out some emails, etc. to that effect, but wanted to know first whether I'm thinking straight about this. Anybody? KM, maybe some dumbbell Dem registered "Mickey Mouse"as a Democrat, but don't you think it is more likely that some Rovian Repug did it to discredit all the real new voters who registered Democrat? Probably rules about voter rolls vary from state to state, and maybe even from county to county. Where I live now, the rolls are purged every three years. That is, if you haven't voted in three years your name will be removed and you will have to register again in order to vote. When I moved and registered in a new state, I was still registered in my former precinct in another state. So I was registered in two places--but I just voted in the place where I now live. I don't know if there is a federal law against the same person voting in more than one state. Probably there isn't one, but there should be. I think that it probably hasn't come up very much in the past, but might be a problem in future. BTW, welcome. I'm hoping the horizon is cloudless and we will be able to see at least a partially eclipsed moon rise up from the ocean! [And though I do think it entirely probable that the Repgs seek to discredit us Dems - I also humbly accept the notion that sometimes we are also all too human. At least I am, damnably so sometimes! -- but with the precedent they've already set in misrepresenting themselves as dems, you may just be right!] So whaddya think? I thought to try to get newscasters to "wake up" to how these two reports, even if true, show a greater evil [wouldn't use THAT word with them though] on the Repg side. And Jo - You're right...I've been lurking for quite awhile so maybe this is just "catching up" time ;) Thanks all for your warm welcome. Aloha to you Timothy... I'm going to read your article in a minute, just wanted to make a comment or two before they slip from me... The Neptune Station... it went Direct today and finishes the Station on 29th, right Nancy? I've been waiting for this... I could feel the shift in the energy late last night... dKos has some words on dubya's 'internal' polls which they seem to have obtained some info about... Bush's internal polling paints dire picture for him From a GOP official who has seen Bush's internal polling. "There's just no place where they're polling outside the margin of error so they can say, 'We have this state,'" the official said. "And they know that an incumbent needs to be outside the margin of error." They're sweating. And they'll sweat more as we do our GOTV, GOTV, GOTV. http://www.dailykos.com/story/2004/10/24/153457/95 ---------------- My own intuitive feeling is, this election is going to be like no other in more ways than Karl Rove and his bag of tricks. The people are moving, the energy is rising... like the tsunami Nancy described in her article some months back.. Remember? I feel the ground moving under the shrub, remember Sally? More people are going to vote in this election than ever before... and the MAJORITY are going to vote for President Kerry. He WILL win. The PEOPLE WILL WIN. I 'feel' it for the first time... that solid, rock hard, gut, psychic, third-eye feeling --- The moment? I was having lunch with my Dad today, and trying to chat away about any and everything to keep 'politics' from coming up... I've mentioned to y'all that this election is the first time in my life my Dad and I have disagreed about something... he's scared, been watching too much Faux Noos, and thinks dubya is 'doing the best he can'... etc... So, I ask about baseball, his favorite subject, and how it is that the Yanks lost and BoSox won, and he started talking and describing one of the games, and one of the players, who literally flew/dived through the air on his stomach with arm outstretched to catch a ball he couldn't even see... and then to tell me how BoSox were two, then three games down, and came back to win two, then two more straight... his face lit up and I could feel his energy and I said the players simply 'willed it to happen' and he smiled big and said yes, they WILLED it, no other way to explain it... Well, my friends, been to dKos lately, read the comments? How 'bout here? How 'bout other blogs? Will, friends... the sheer WILL of the people... the rising of the consciousness... the movement of the people (ohhh my gosh, I sound like an evangelistic preacher!)... anyway, you get my drift. Start thinking positive, and more positive. Say it... "WE ARE GOING TO WIN", make it happen. Have you ever been in a situation you knew you had to win and all the odds were against you, but you came through? Maybe just a talk with a troubled child, that needed to understand and somehow you magically opened that window, made the connection... We're going to do this I tell you... Namaste Posted by: Jo on October 24, 2004 09:04 PMTimothy - great article. Good logic! I especially like how you keep to the argument, and despite Sarah's failure to "grok" (What the hell is that anyway, or "fisking"?) I thought your argument coherent and persuasive. I looked in on her post and decided that she is, like the rest of the Repgs who are supporting Bush simply a hysteric. Unable to connect with reality or to follow a simple line of logic due to a hijacked amygdala, most likely as a result of 9/11 trauma. I pray for the safety of her husband, though - and all those in harm's way today. Their fear and retreat into denial highlight why we must avoid letting our own reason be similarly diverted into delusion-land. Positive - think positive and stay focused in the moment. Visualize the reality we desire, take responsible action in harmony with our goals, and continue steadily into the light. Use the energies now manifesting...thanks Astroworlders for sharing your great suggestions and connections to the astrological! Timothy, I am overwhelmed... such a great article. My friend you are certainly a gifted writer and solid on your facts... How proud I am to know that one of a-world is writing second (or more?) articles for Counterpunch! Sally said some time back, that if those of us reading and posting had ANY idea of the credentials and life experiences of some of the writers and posters, we would be impressed... Sometimes I really wonder if it is really worth the effort, and just to get that feedback from all of you is heartening. I really do love to read all the fine articles and commentary here. KM- "Grok" is from the classic science fiction novel "Stranger in a Strange Land" about a wise alien come to this strange land of earth. It's been too many years since I've read it to remember exactly, but "grok" in the alien's language meant something like "understand" but in a really deep, cellular level so to speak. That's why it was such a perfect, priceless set-up to find such a classic example of America's failure to understand the Iraq war, and by extention the darkness of the Bush Administration, on a blog called "Trying to Grok." By the way, here is another interesting verse (74) from a different translation of the Tao Te Ching (Daodejing--according to the more up-to-date romanization): "If men are not afraid to die, Perhaps the whole approach to the problem of terrorism is misguided. Posted by: Timothy on October 25, 2004 01:04 AMTimothy - ah, I grok! And it is priceless indeed (sometimes it seems like they make it way too easy)! Thanks for the translation. From your post: "If men are not afraid to die, It's been my belief that this is PRECISELY why the current approach to terrorism is utterly misguided. If they bothered to follow the reasoning, the Repgs could "grok" this as well. Oh...I forgot. That would require using the tools of the "reality-based" community. On the other hand Neptune could be considered the forward movement of the idealistic, I too have visualized Kerry, before I knew today that you all were doing so, and I saw him with his Kerry spoke in Boca Raton today at the Florida Atlantic University Lawn. 7000 seats and 8000 standing college students expected, but between 17 and 20,000 showed up, with the line a mile and a quarter down the main street, Glades Road. Think about that. :) Many are upset that Ed Koch is coming here endorsing Dummy and Ari Fleischer will be at a temple speaking for the chimp. I gave out 600 democratic voting "tickets" between Saturday and today, Sunday to people who requested them. So many stopped to say they were praying that Kerry wins, and like us, that they can't even bear to look at the chimp when he is on tv. Amazing that we all have such a visceral reaction to him that we can't-won't even look at him. Out of the 100's of people who passed by my "station" today only 6 or 7 were obviously repugnant and made nasty comments. One purposely stopped to ask me and bait me why he should vote for Kerry. When I realized what he was doing, I told him I could tell him why he shouldn't vote for the other. He wouldn't stop, and I told him to please go and vote for Bush - and still wouldnt leave until I was repeating Go away, go away, go away. But that type is so rare. It is still 96 to 98 % pro- Kerry in this area. And even in the Northern Florida areas, the dems are out early voting in monstrous numbers - (they don't even realize how many because at least 50% are leaving because there is a two hour wait to vote) while the republicans are behind in voting. I strongly suspect that many republicans are just going to sit home and not vote at all not being able to vote for Kerry, but not able to abide the Bungler. The better for America.

Not only are these super-high-yield explosives probably being used in many, if not most, of the various suicide and car bombings in Iraq, but these particular explosives are ones used in the triggering process for nuclear weapons. In other words, it's bad stuff. What also emerges in the Nelson Report is that the Defense Department has been trying to keep this secret for some time. The DOD even went so far as to order the Iraqis not to inform the IAEA that the materials had gone missing. Informing the IAEA, of course, would lead to it becoming public knowledge in the United States. I quote from Chris Nelson's summary ... More... Posted by: JoannaOregon on October 25, 2004 06:05 AMClash of the Titans On the downside, however, the public hates Congress these days, and Gephardt will be running as a leader of Congress. In a recent Harris Poll, 45 percent of those queried had an unfavorable view of congressional Democrats. By virtue of its very nature, Congress as a whole is seen as the center of partisan squabbling over such important political issues as presidential impeachment, taxes, and what the government knew about terrorism before September 11. Those familiar with Gephardt’s thinking say the Missourian is familiar with this disadvantage and simply doesn’t care. Gephardt, 61, knows that 2004 will probably be his last chance to run for president. Some in his camp are still smarting over the fact that he didn’t run in 1992, when he decided against it twice during that election cycle. Few realize that he pondered running as late as January 1992, when Arkansas governor Bill Clinton was faltering in New Hampshire, in part over allegations that he’d had an extramarital affair with singer Gennifer Flowers. To this day, some Gephardt allies believe that if the congressman had gotten into the race at that point (already too late to make it onto the New Hampshire ballot), he may have been able to overtake Clinton — who, they point out, did not face premier Democratic talent that year. (Clinton’s competition in the 1992 national primary, the locally much-beloved former Massachusetts senator Paul Tsongas, had been out of politics since 1983 and didn't have much national presence.) If Gephardt does run, and it looks as if he will, what’s to stop the primary from becoming a rematch of the 1988 slugfest between Gephardt and Gore? While it’s true that Gore has been in near seclusion since the 2000 presidential race — making only a handful of public appearances, the most prominent of which was his fiery speech to the Florida Democratic Convention in April — most observers believe he will run in 2004. As the Washington Post’s David Broder noted, although Gore’s been inaccessible for months, the winner of the 2000 election’s popular vote has not come out and said point-blank that he’s not running. That’s why all potential candidates, from Gephardt to Lieberman and Kerry, are readying themselves for a challenge from the former vice-president. So we’re likely to see the two most influential Democrats of their generation face off once again in a presidential primary. What will they do to each other? THE GEPHARDT-GORE rivalry is famous. The two men entered Congress in 1976 and competed with each other for recognition as first of that class. In the 1988 Democratic presidential primary, the competition between Gore and Gephardt became one of the campaign’s subtexts. Each believed that if not for the other, he would be able to defeat Governor Michael Dukakis. Gore adopted Gephardt’s conservative proto–New Democratic image (Gephardt had been a founder of the Democratic Leadership Council); both assumed the trappings of patriotism to win the South. Each criticized the other for flip-flopping on issues. In one presidential debate, in Dallas, Gephardt accused Gore of changing his position on an oil tariff. "Lately, you’ve been sounding more like Al Haig than Al Gore," he said. "That line sounds more like Richard Nixon than Richard Gephardt," Gore fired back. During the campaign, Gephardt’s campaign manager, Bill Carrick, got into hot water after making inflammatory statements about Gore’s campaign team prior to Super Tuesday primary day. "I can’t wait," said Carrick. "It’s blood lust. Let me at him. I think they are the phoniest two-bit bastards that ever came down the pike, starting with Al Gore." Tension between the two simmered through much of the 1990s, as Gore became Clinton’s frontman in favor of the North American Free Trade Agreement and Gephardt emerged as the main advocate of organized labor, which opposed NAFTA. Eventually, largely in response to the threat Clinton faced from congressional Republicans, the two mended faces. When Gephardt decided not to run for president in 2000, Gore wooed the House minority leader, who eventually endorsed him. In the 2000 election, Gore increasingly relied on support from the AFL-CIO and began to sound more and more like Gephardt. And when Gore spoke to the delegates at the Florida convention in April, he did so in full Gephardt-style populist fashion. "I’ve had it," the vice-president said. "America’s economy is suffering unnecessarily. Important American values are being trampled. Special interests are calling the shots." Now, in their most recent reversal, Gephardt has become the hawk on Iraq, while Gore has been silent on the issue. Democratic observers are of two minds about the prospects of a final Gore-Gephardt match-up. On the one hand, they look forward to it as great political theater. "It certainly would be a clash of titans in a way," says one former Gephardt operative. But they also worry that such a contest would only weaken the Democrats. "I don’t think [Bush political strategist] Karl Rove could imagine a better scenario than those two guys squaring off," the Gephardt ally adds. Conventional wisdom holds that Gephardt would be easy grist for Democratic opponents and the Republican attack machine. Indeed, Mickey Edwards — a former Republican congressman from Oklahoma who entered Congress with both men, and who’s currently a professor at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government — is quick to criticize Gephardt for flip-flopping. "The funny thing about Dick Gephardt is that he has been all over the place in terms of his philosophy," Edwards says. "When I first met him he was considered a very moderate centrist Democrat, and then he moved very much to the left." Yet Gephardt, in many ways, is in a much better position to run for president than Gore is. Gephardt doesn’t have the baggage of a recent presidential run. (His 1988 effort has long been consigned to the ancient-history annals of presidential politics.) Plus, he is well placed to run as both a hawk on foreign policy and a lefty on economic issues, where Bush can be exploited — really, the only kind of Democratic candidacy that can win in 2004. "He has the potential to run as an economic populist, social moderate, and foreign-policy hawk, which is the best platform for a Democrat to run on in 2004," says Marshall Wittmann, a political analyst at the conservative-leaning Hudson Institute. "If Gore runs, Lieberman will not, which leaves the Scoop Jackson territory to Gephardt." And as far as the domestic left is concerned, Gephardt remains popular. "I think he’d be a great president," says Barry Bluestone, the director of the Center for Urban and Regional Policy at Northeastern University, and a former Gephardt adviser. "I think Dick Gephardt is one of the brightest people in Congress. I’m impressed with his understanding of the issues and broad progressive outlook. To me, we would have a broad debate about the major issues of the day — Social Security, health care, international trade, and international policy." It’s possible that, as some observers of presidential politics expect, Gore and Gephardt will cancel each other out. But the damage they do while battling could ruin their party’s chances in 2004. I don’t know if anyone watched MSNBC’s Scarborough Country the night they had the “Chief Shifty Swifty” John O’Neill was on pushing his evil book and doing his creepy bizzarro lying about Kerry.
