Fine, fine fellow he is... NOT... got an email from moveon - candlelight vigils are going to be held tomorrow night for the 1,000 fallen troops: "Tomorrow night at 8pm, we're joining with the Win Without War coalition to hold hundreds of candlelight vigils. Gathered together silently in towns across the country, we'll reflect on this terrible moment and honor the fallen. And by focusing attention on the dead, we'll help pressure our national leaders to get us out of this mess. Can you host a vigil? It's a small commitment of time -- you just need to identify a good location and pull together some candles and printed materials for attendees. To sign up to host a vigil, go to: http://action.moveon.org/vigil/newmeeting.html If you can't host, we welcome everyone to attend a candlelight vigil tomorrow night. You can search for one near you at: http://action.moveon.org/vigil/ 865 soldiers have died since President Bush declared, "Mission Accomplished." And yesterday, top Pentagon officials told the New York Times that "insurgents controlled important parts of central Iraq and that it was unclear when American and Iraqi forces would be able to secure those areas." The attacks are increasing, the death toll is rising, and there's no exit strategy to get us out. Posted by: Jo on September 9, 2004 12:14 AMThis is a test, only a test... "AMERICANS WILL COME TOGETHER TO HONOR THE FALLEN AND DEMAND AND END TO THE WAR" Across our nation, people will come together in public parks, at the steps of city halls, outside places of worship and at countless other community places to express our sorrow and to demand that our government level with us about how this killing will stop. A painful milestone has been reached: 1,000 American servicemen and servicewomen have been killed as a result of our nation’s attack on Iraq. Another 7,000 young Americans have been wounded, and as many as 13,000 Iraqis have died as a result of America’s war. Without a plan to bring our troops safely home, more young men and women will have their lives ended in this tragic folly. To find an existing vigil in your community go to:

For years, scientists have been trying to figure out where carbon dioxide goes once humans generate it. Significant amounts billow into the atmosphere. But each year, atmospheric CO2 concentrations have been rising only half as fast as humans supply the gas. The hiding place, it turns out, is the world's oceans. And the implications for marine life are troubling, researchers say. If industrial CO2 emissions continue to increase at their current rate, by the end of the century the surface waters of the world's oceans are likely to become more acidic. Though the change appears subtle, it could threaten key organisms at the base of the marine food chain and further endanger shallow-water reefs, which represent some of the most biologically productive ecosystems on the planet. The absorption of this extra carbon dioxide would induce changes in ocean chemistry not seen for at least 20 million years, some researchers say. More.... From the West Virginia Gazette: Christian values and politics He said: "Beware of the scribes, who like to go about in long robes, and to have salutations in the marketplaces and the best seats in the synagogues and the places of honor at feasts, who devour widows’ houses and for a pretense make long prayers. They will receive the greater condemnation." It struck me that Jesus often reserved his harshest words not for sinners or people who had moral lapses, but for people who made a show of religion to enhance their power, prestige, privilege and wealth. In fact, two major no-nos where Jesus was concerned were using the display of religion for social gain and oppressing the poor. And in his day, the two were usually linked.
In Chapter 6 of Matthew, Jesus advises the faithful to practice prayer, fasting and almsgiving in private, unlike the hypocrites who loved to be seen doing such things.
Those who displayed piety and ignored justice, compassion, and mercy were compared to whited sepulchers or brightly painted tombs that conceal death and decay within.
If "Christian values" are going to be injected into public life, we should at least use the real ones. He projects himself as incredibly strong, but behind closed doors he is incapable of saying no to his biggest financial supporters and his coalition in the Oval Office. He’s been shockingly malleable to Cheney and Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz and the whole New American Century bunch. He was rolled in the immediate aftermath of 9/11. He was too weak to resist it. “I’m not of the school that questions his intelligence,” Gore went on. “There are different kinds of intelligence, and it’s arrogant for a person with one kind of intelligence to question someone with another kind. He certainly is a master at some things, and he has a following. He seeks strength in simplicity. But, in today’s world, that’s often a problem. I don’t think that he’s weak intellectually. I think that he is incurious. It’s astonishing to me that he’d spend an hour with his incoming Secretary of the Treasury and not ask him a single question. But I think his weakness is a moral weakness. I think he is a bully, and, like all bullies, he’s a coward when confronted with a force that he’s fearful of. His reaction to the extravagant and unbelievably selfish wish list of the wealthy interest groups that put him in the White House is obsequious. The degree of obsequiousness that is involved in saying ‘yes, yes, yes, yes, yes’ to whatever these people want, no matter the damage and harm done to the nation as a whole—that can come only from genuine moral cowardice. I don’t see any other explanation for it, because it’s not a question of principle. The only common denominator is each of the groups has a lot of money that they’re willing to put in service to his political fortunes and their ferocious and unyielding pursuit of public policies that benefit them at the expense of the nation.” Posted by: Shade on September 9, 2004 04:20 AMWow, and what exactly were you expecting from a man who was beaten by Bush in 2000? I'll give him kudos for not attacking the President's intelligence like so many ignorant liberals, but I still think Gore is off base when he says the President is a bully. If anything, the actions of Daschle and these fillibusters are bullies abusing a system they were never meant to abuse. The very dispicable activities that John Kerry was so vehemently against he now appears to be pumping up and joining the fray of. I guess now, since John Kerry's campaign is doing these sorts of activities it will not be fair to say that these things are okay to do? The invitation went out from George Allen, the right-wing Senator who once told Republicans at a state convention that their job was not just to beat Democrats but to "kick their soft teeth down their whiny throats". They're taking that money and putting their hate on the air in South Dakota. This week they launched a $2.4 million smear campaign - that's more than $9.00 for every voter in the last election there. Tom Daschle is a good man and a good Senator. And the flood of negativity into his race demonstrates that the national Republican Party has come unhinged. We have a responsibility to stand with him - and against this kind of politics once and for all: https://www.tomdaschle.com/contribute/ Extremists like Allen only thrive politically when they have someone to hate. The need to hate is so strong that one of the groups that has attacked Daschle, the so-called Club for Growth, even attacks other Republicans who don't support its plan to bankrupt our country. I am tired of crackpots with corporate backers polluting the airwaves. Ads like these make people with real problems tune out from politics. People quickly believe that our political process cannot produce serious solutions to our common problems. And if we let people like George Allen and the Club for Growth win, those people will be right. We cannot allow them to win. Join me in supporting Tom Daschle now: https://www.tomdaschle.com/contribute/ When Tom Daschle is sworn in as the new Senate Majority Leader in January he will have prevailed against one of the most negative campaigns in history. Only then will the fringe GOP leadership lose its grip on the Republican Party. And only then will we be able to balance the budget, ensure that everyone has health care, and restore America's moral leadership in the world. Your contribution now is a stand against these tactics not only in South Dakota but everywhere: https://www.tomdaschle.com/contribute/ Thank you. So this week, Mr. Cheney wooed the voters with, Message: You die. The terrible beauty of its simplicity grows on you. It is a sign of the dark, macho, paranoid vice president's restraint that he didn't really take it to its emotionally satisfying conclusion: Message: Vote for us or we'll kill you. Without Zell Miller around to out-crazy him, and unplugged after a convention that tried to "humanize'' him with grandchildren, horses and wifely anecdotes about his inability to dance the twist, Mr. Cheney is back as Terrifier in Chief. Astrology of September In the current month, besides the Mercury retrograde that is passing, the big news is the Virgo New Moon of Tuesday September 14th, which conjuncts Mars and squares Pluto. Pluto has recently stationed, changing its direction into forward motion, and is therefore moving slowly right now and stronger in its placement. Also Pluto semi-sextiles and almost exactly parallels Chiron, about thirty degrees away at 20 + degrees of Capricorn. Thus these two planetary symbols of deep soul-level connection with our inner depths are powerfully linked at this time. The Mars - Pluto Square that is highlighted by the New Moon is another potent indicator of our desire nature, where we are compulsively attached, and where tension may arise, and where we may find our underlying drives of passion or suppressed rage potentially rising to the surface. This New Moon is also exactly conjuncts Neptune ( see chart) in the ninth house of the U.S. chart, ruling oil, as well as deception and media hype. We may see acres of spin coming down the pike as this New Moon cycle plays itself out, leading up to the Libra Solar Eclipse of October 13th. This explains alot, sadly. Since we are about to have the new moon stellium conjunct US Neptune.... A Mythic Reality Published: September 7, 2004 The best book I've read about America after 9/11 isn't about either America or 9/11. It's "War Is a Force That Gives Us Meaning," an essay on the psychology of war by Chris Hedges, a veteran war correspondent. Better than any poll analysis or focus group, it explains why President Bush, despite policy failures at home and abroad, is ahead in the polls. War, Mr. Hedges says, plays to some fundamental urges. "Lurking beneath the surface of every society, including ours," he says, "is the passionate yearning for a nationalist cause that exalts us, the kind that war alone is able to deliver." When war psychology takes hold, the public believes, temporarily, in a "mythic reality" in which our nation is purely good, our enemies are purely evil, and anyone who isn't our ally is our enemy. This state of mind works greatly to the benefit of those in power. One striking part of the book describes Argentina's reaction to the 1982 Falklands war. Gen. Leopoldo Galtieri, the leader of the country's military junta, cynically launched that war to distract the public from the failure of his economic policies. It worked: "The junta, which had been on the verge of collapse" just before the war, "instantly became the saviors of the country." The point is that once war psychology takes hold, the public desperately wants to believe in its leadership, and ascribes heroic qualities to even the least deserving ruler. National adulation for the junta ended only after a humiliating military defeat. George W. Bush isn't General Galtieri: America really was attacked on 9/11, and any president would have followed up with a counterstrike against the Taliban. Yet the Bush administration, like the Argentine junta, derived enormous political benefit from the impulse of a nation at war to rally around its leader. Another president might have refrained from exploiting that surge of support for partisan gain; Mr. Bush didn't. And his administration has sought to perpetuate the war psychology that makes such exploitation possible. Step by step, the fight against Al Qaeda became a universal "war on terror," then a confrontation with the "axis of evil," then a war against all evil everywhere. Nobody knows where it all ends. What is clear is that whenever political debate turns to Mr. Bush's actual record in office, his popularity sinks. Only by doing whatever it takes to change the subject to the war on terror - not to what he's actually doing about terrorist threats, but to his "leadership," whatever that means - can he get a bump in the polls. Last week's convention made it clear that Mr. Bush intends to use what's left of his heroic image to win the election, and early polls suggest that the strategy may be working. What can John Kerry do? Campaigning exclusively on domestic issues won't work. Mr. Bush must be held to account for his dismal record on jobs, health care and the environment. But as Mr. Hedges writes, when war psychology makes a public yearn to believe in its leaders, "there is little that logic or fact or truth can do to alter the experience." To win, the Kerry campaign has to convince a significant number of voters that the self-proclaimed "war president" isn't an effective war leader - he only plays one on TV. This charge has the virtue of being true. It's hard to find a nonpartisan national security analyst with a good word for the Bush administration's foreign policy. Iraq, in particular, is a slow-motion disaster brought on by wishful thinking, cronyism and epic incompetence. If I were running the Kerry campaign, I'd remind people frequently about Mr. Bush's flight-suit photo-op, when he declared the end of major combat. In fact, the war goes on unabated. News coverage of Iraq dropped off sharply after the supposed transfer of sovereignty on June 28, but as many American soldiers have died since the transfer as in the original invasion. And I'd point out that while Mr. Bush spared no effort preparing for his carrier landing - he even received underwater survival training in the White House pool - he didn't prepare for things that actually mattered, like securing and rebuilding Iraq after Baghdad fell. Will it work? I don't know. But to win, Mr. Kerry must try to puncture the myth that Mr. Bush's handlers have so assiduously created. Posted by: Shade on September 9, 2004 01:36 PM

The entire country is their 'lab'... unfortunately many people are simply not able to discern fact from fiction --- either because they have neither the tools nor the time to find the truth, or any facts contrary to their 'mindset' would bring down their 'house of cards' --- The method employed by this insidious group has been to tie Dubya to their 'god' so that any effort to discredit Dubya is immediately cast aside --- Remember the political climate in this country when Clinton beat Bush I? Bush supporters were not happy campers... they trashed Clinton from the get-go... I expect the same, with greater venom to occur when Kerry wins... As Sally has stated and so many others throughout the country repeat over and over, we must put Progressives and Dems in the Senate and House and in the gov mansions... Additionally, we must excise the liars in the media --- the pundits at Faux Noos, etc. If you're interested in boycotts --- here's a link that will provide names of sponsors of Fox - http://www.debone.com/boycottFoxNewsSponsors.html Best way to fight Faux News and CNN or any others is simply to turn them 'off'... The country is definitely polarized... however, I don't see it as 'they're for Bush' and we're for Kerry... I see it as Bush and his minions have screwed the people of this country and the planet and the clearest path for the people to keep their power and diminish theirs is at the moment Kerry and more Progressives and Democrats in the Senate and House. Meanwhile, those of us who are 'awake' have to work to bring light to those who slumber... Bringing light means having to move into the darkness... When Kerry wins in November, much work will remain to be done... consciousness is rising and we must do our part. Let your light shine --- The following gives me much solace and so I share in the hope it brings comfort to you... "Ours is not the task of fixing the entire world all at once, but of stretching out to mend the part of the world that is within our reach. Any small, calm thing that one soul can do to help another soul, to assist some portion of this poor suffering world, will help immensely. It is not given to us to know which acts or by whom, will cause the critical mass to tip toward an enduring good. Helmed by award-winning Director George Butler, best known for the Arnold Schwarzenegger documentary "Pumping Iron", "The Endurance: Shackleton's Legendary Antarctic Expedition" and a close personal friend of Kerry's for over 40 years, "Going Upriver" shows John Kerry in a manner unseen by the general public until now. Set to make its Worldwide Premiere on Tuesday Sept. 14, at the Toronto Film Festival, the film will be released stateside in select theaters nationwide by THINKfilm on Oct. 1. "I encourage everyone -- Republican or Democrat -- to see this film," said George Butler, director of the film. "This film is as much about an era and the role a devastating war played in dividing our country, as it is about one man. Given our current political climate and involvement abroad, the film is extremely timely and, in my opinion, will resonate on many different levels with the general public, despite political affiliation." .. Distributor THINKFilm is well poised to release the film just having come off of distributing last year's documentary sensation, "Spellbound" garnering the company its first Oscar nomination and becoming one of the highest grossing documentaries of all time. In addition to THINK, Palisades Pictures and Executive Producer, Vin Roberti, have committed upwards of $1,000,000 to support the P & A fund for the film. ..

House votes to block new overtime rules WASHINGTON (AP) - In a sharp rebuke of a new administration policy, the House moved Thursday to block the Labor Department from carrying out overtime rules that critics argued could deprive millions of workers of their overtime pay. The 223-193 vote in favor of blocking the new overtime rules defied the White House, which has threatened to veto a massive spending bill now on the House floor if it contains any language tampering with the rules that took effect Aug. 23. Democrats, united against the rules, were joined by some 20 Republicans in voting for the amendment to a $142.5 billion health and education spending bill. "The administration has chosen this time to institute new regulations which for the first time in 80 years scale back workers' entitlement to overtime pay," said Rep. David Obey, D-Wis., a sponsor of the proposal. Democrats sought to depict the issue as an election-season example of the Bush administration's insensitivity to worker rights, saying the overtime privileges of up to 6 million workers were at risk. The White House and most Republicans insisted the new rules update an antiquated overtime pay system and would add more than 1 million lower-paid workers to those eligible for overtime. "I do think that the clarity that comes with these new rules will help better protect American workers," said Rep. John Boehner, R-Ohio, chairman of the House Education and the Workforce Committee. It was unclear how much impact the House vote would have on the Labor Department rules, the biggest overhaul of overtime regulations in more than half a century. The Senate has yet to take up the health and education bill and the provision could still be stripped out of the final bill when the two chambers, both controlled by Republicans, meet to settle on a final version.

This story is a perfect demonstration of the difference between the Swift Boat controversy and the National Guard controversy. Both are tales from long ago and both are related to Vietnam, but the documentary evidence in the two cases is like night and day. In the Swift Boat case, practically every new piece of documentary evidence indicates that Kerry's accusers are lying. Conversely, in the National Guard case, practically every new piece of documentary evidence provides additional confirmation that the charges against Bush are true. That really is the heart of the matter. But in telling fashion it's a distinction many miss. -- Josh Marshall Posted by: abilene on September 10, 2004 01:37 AMWhich candidate is being more truthful about his military experience? http://www.misleader.org/daily_mislead/Read.asp?fn=df09092004.html Mike - Mike Bush is ahead in WV by about 8 points. In 2000 http://www.gregpalast.com/detail.cfm?artid=370&row=0 On November 9, 2001, when you could still choke on the dust in the air near Ground Zero, BBC Television received a call in London from a top-level US intelligence agent. He was not happy. Shortly after George W. Bush took office, he told us reluctantly, the CIA, the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) and the FBI, "were told to back off the Saudis." We knew that. In the newsroom, we had a document already in hand, marked, "SECRET" across the top and "199-I" - meaning this was a national security matter. The secret memo released agents to hunt down two member of the bin Laden family operating a "suspected terrorist organization" in the USA. It was dated September 13, 2001 -- two days too late for too many. What the memo indicates, corroborated by other sources, was that the agents had long wanted to question these characters ... but could not until after the attack. By that time, these bin Laden birds had flown their American nest. Back to the high-level agent. I pressed him to tell me exactly which investigations were spiked. None of this interview dance was easy, requiring switching to untraceable phones. Ultimately, the insider said, "Khan Labs." At the time, our intelligence agencies were on the trail of Pakistan's Dr. Strangelove, A.Q. Khan, who built Pakistan's bomb and was selling its secrets to the Libyans. But once Bush and Condoleeza Rice's team took over, the source told us, agents were forced to let a hot trail go cold. Specifically, there were limits on tracing the Saudi money behind this "Islamic bomb." Then we made another call, this time to an arms dealer in the Mideast. He confirmed that his partner attended a meeting in 1995 at the 5-star Hotel Royale Monceau in Paris where, allegedly, Saudi billionaires agreed to fund Al Qaeda fanatics. We understood it to be protection money, not really a sign of support for their attacks. Nevertheless, rule number one of investigative reporting is "follow the money" -- but the sheiks' piggy banks were effectively off-limits to the US agents during the Bush years. One of the men in the posh hotel's meeting of vipers happens to have been a Bush family business associate. MORE! Posted by: Pat C on September 10, 2004 03:56 AMRoderick - I have thought for a long time that the battle against oil trading in euros was a big issue. I think Nicaragua either threatened it or started doing it as well. It would devastate our economy and that would in turn harm the world economy. I think that is the only reason it hasn't happened yet. Otherwise, I am sure the OPEC countries would love to punch us in the gut at this point. The price of oil for us would skyrocket and with it the price of many other things. I have been concerned that the current Saturn transit to US Mercury might hit us in our currency, relating to oil or investments since Mercury is in the US 8th house. So far it hasn't happened, but the transit is active til the spring. What did happen on almost the exact transit was the US death toll in Iraq hit 1000, connecting to Mercury's 8th house of death energy. Posted by: Nancy on September 10, 2004 04:04 AMMike, how could you forget all those coupons that come with the Sunday papers? Posted by: shylurker on September 10, 2004 04:13 AMHere is some interesting reading from a site (www.edtamplin.com), again predicting a Kerry victory: http://www.edtamplin.com/articles/Predictions%202004%20update.html A word on the Presidential elections. John Kerry imposes the aggressive martial energy on the US horoscope. Kerry, born with Mars and Uranus together, brings both to align with America's Uranus. This planet has been so often associated with war or assassinations. Consider that the Civil War began with America's Uranus returning to its birthplace position for the first time, the second return proclaimed D-Day. Kerry's self-sufficient Moon/Saturn combination, falls right on America's Mars. Kerry would like to organise the military, like a real disciplinarian. Being born under a Full Moon is a guarantee of objectivity and usually publicity too. His Sagittarian Sun and Ascendant projects natural optimism, but it is realistically tempered via its opposition to the Moon and Saturn. Kerry places Neptune on the Midheaven of the United States. Therefore he may come across as a very charismatic character, but will he deliver his promises? The difficulty with this placement lies is bringing things to fruition. Kerry's rise to power has also cost him dearly. As Pluto moved across his Ascendant and birth Sun he lost those close to him and also was operated on for cancer. In true Plutonian terms he has literally risen from the ashes to become a Presidential front-runner leading into the 2004 elections. On the day of the showdown, November 2, Kerry will have the beneficial combination of Venus and Jupiter passing his Midheaven and in his career house. Pluto will still be in the vicinity of his Sun, and the transiting Nodes will move across his Venus. It's a popular arrangement, enough for him to give the biggest race of his life a real shake. Incumbent George W. Bush has to survive a Saturn return to win a second term. It's a case of either kudos for a job well done or the past returning to haunt. Bush does have some difficult aspects on the day. Mars opposes his career related Midheaven. The Sun, which squares Neptune on Election Day, is also squaring his Mercury/Pluto union. On George's progressed chart his Midheaven is in line with Uranus and transiting Pluto comes to oppose his progressed Midheaven. This too supports a sudden change of career. These are the sorts of aspects that propose an overthrow of the existing order. They may serve you well if you are re-structuring your life. But they'd be more productive for someone hoping to secure a surprise win, rather than maintain the status quo, which of course George hopes to do. Posted by: judi on September 10, 2004 06:49 AMJust thought I'd pop on and share these few paragraphs from a site I just found tonight. Several things are well written and do follow the patterns that Sally, Nancy, Chas, and others of you have been talking about. Since I easily pick up on the anxiety, fears and anger in this country, and world too, I thought the following comments helped and acted as a reminder to keep myself from being sucked into the darkness and negativity we are steeped in now.
... The economy will remain somewhat volatile, but will generally move upward for a time. In the U.S., the presidential election outcome will affect it. If big money politics is allowed to stay in power, the gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots” will, of course, increase as that is the agenda of these people.... ...A word about fear… As most of you know who have a metaphysical sensibility, fear brings that of which you are afraid. There is a lot of air-wave chatter about fear, in particular fearing that mysterious creature called a “Terrorist”. This is what I would recommend—do not buy into other people’s interpretation of what’s going on. If your lessons in life bring you close to a terrorist situation, learn what you can from it and move on unafraid, for fear is the enemy. Terrorists want to instill fear. The darkness wants you to be afraid—for in that fear you can be controlled. If you feel afraid, ask God to remove your fear. He will. You can move on in peace. A fully functioning “Light Worker” cannot be in fear. Fear cannot live where love is. Remember too, that there is much profit to be made from chaos and fear. It is to some peoples’ advantage to perpetuate it fear, keep us off-balance, distracted. They know if we are afraid we will buy whatever it is they are selling to be safe. Be careful of this.... ...The War in Iraq… I know we all hope it will somehow resolve itself in a constructive manner, but as long as we in the U.S. misunderstand our role in the big picture, we will experience this war. Our job has never been to beat the crap out of people we perceive as evil. All we can ever do is offer education and physical comforts in the hope of helping victims gather some strength and clarity to change their own reality. Granted, in some cases this is very difficult, but I feel diplomatic negotiations facilitated by an international, unbiased group (the United Nations, for instance) is the only way to accomplish positive change. The current administration is, of course, making many mistakes. They have been very naďve in their perception of how the sea of humanity ebbs and flows in its efforts to grow. They have a rather simplistic notion of performing as the world’s sheriffs in order to force change. Force of any kind will only be met by resistance. How could it be otherwise? So, as long as we are intent on forcing our ideas onto others, we will be in some kind of war. http://www.psychicfred.com/predictions_2004.htm
Sharon....It is interesting to note that the day "Going Upriver" is released the sun, mercury, mars, and jupiter will be on John Kerry's Libra midheaven. Justice will prevail and we should all follow John's example of not falling into the trap of hate. Posted by: teresa b on September 10, 2004 01:04 PMAmen to that, teresa b.
