The Olympics, Old and New by Isabelle Ghaneh
“In 776 B.C. the first Olympic Games of ancient times were held, an institution which lasted 1,170 years, until 393 A.D. when they were banned as a pagan rite, by the Byzantine Emperor Theodosius the 1st. At first, only free Greek citizens were allowed to participate in the Olympic Games. Later, under the Roman Empire, all citizens of the Empire had the right to participate. The Games took place every 4 years, during the first full moon after the summer solstice. At first they lasted only one day, but as different sports were added, the time required to participate grew longer, reaching 5 days. While the Games were in progress the Ancient Greeks obeyed the rule of the Sacred Armistice, which meant the stopping of all hostilities and forbidding the execution of the death penalty. At first the Sacred Armistice lasted for a month, but later it lasted for three.” See: The Games in Ancient Greece Since the first Full Moon after the Summer Solstice would be on July 23 of 776 B.C.E., a Tuesday, I decided to look at the dates for where the planets where. The planet’s positions are as follows: Sun Cancer 21; Moon Capricorn 21; Mercury Cancer 16; Venus Virgo 3; Mars Capricorn 7 retrograde; Jupiter Taurus 19; Saturn Capricorn 28 retrograde; Uranus Capricorn 1 retrograde; Neptune Aquarius 23 retrograde; Pluto Cancer 4; North Node Leo 27. A plenitude of planets are in either Cancer or Capricorn, with the representation that entails of home, security, proud in one’s country of origin, and status, along with hard work to obtain a goal. All of this is still true today. The comparison between this chart and the upcoming August 13 Olympics is most prominently displayed in the opposition of the original chart’s Venus and the current charts Uranus and ascendant. The original chart’s Neptune and South Node are opposite the current chart’s Sun. The original chart’s Pluto is conjunct the current chart’s Venus and the original chart’s Uranus and Mars are opposite the current chart’s Venus, adding to the strong ties between the two. The current chart is heavily linked to the first chart and the aspects between them are deep and long lasting. “Astronomers pinpoint date of first marathon, according to the 19 July 04 NewScientist.com news service. “The date of the first ever marathon - thought to have been run 2500 years ago by a single sprinter who died after reaching the finish line - has been identified by a team of astronomical sleuths.” http://www.newscientist.com/news/news.jsp?id=ns99996175 August 12, 490 B.C.E. is on a Monday, according to the ephemeris at Astrodienst. That would give the Sun over to Leo at 12 degrees, with the following zodiacal chart statistics: Moon Aquarius 28, Mercury Leo 16 retrograde, Venus 16 Virgo, Mars Aries 1, Jupiter 2 Cancer, Saturn Libra 22, Uranus 26 Taurus, Neptune 19 Scorpio, Pluto 29 Virgo, North Node 14 Aries retrograde. In the first marathon, as the story that it is linked to goes on to explain, we are told of the heroic young man who died to warn his countrymen of impending danger. With the Moon moving quickly into Pisces that day, the theme of self sacrifice would be very evident. Jupiter in Cancer can also show the protective feelings the young man had for his country, Cancer being the sign that symbolizes the home of one’s birth. Pluto and Venus are in Virgo that hot August day, opposite Pisces, which accentuates the theme of self sacrifice, duty and responsibility to others. Mercury is retrograde, so that could explain the young man having to do double duty, and run back a second time, which in the blazing August sun of Greece is what did him in. Looking at Friday’s August 13 current chart, Mercury is retrograde, at 8 Virgo and opposite the ascendant at 7 Pisces. Could this mean there will be questions as to the veracity of the Olympic scores, with questions occurring as to whether or not the athletes themselves have done anything illegal, to doctor up themselves and hence their scores? Could there be questions as to the fairness of the judges, with political concerns creeping into what should be a sporting event totally devoid of political concerns? I know there has been talk of possible terrorism at this years Olympics, and with Uranus conjunct the ascendant and opposite Mercury and Mars, and with Pluto culminating in the tenth house, that could be a possibility. Personally, I find the use of the asteroids a very telling way to decipher some of the smaller symbols in a chart and this chart is no different. With Vesta, named for the vestal virgins, the goddesses of home, hearth and safety, at 26 Pisces and nearly conjunct the fixed star Sheat, I can again hear the echo of the potential for something outside the normal accidents and missteps that can occur at an event of this magnitude. I do wonder if the possibility of a female suicide bomber could play a factor in a possible event of terrorism. I hope not but it is possible. The ascendant of the current chart is in Pisces and ruled by Neptune, adding a sense of confusion into the games, and what that will bring forth is anybody’s guess. Spectators not finding their seats, getting lost, (Mercury retrograde again) etc. are some of the scenarios that could play out. Also, the desire by the producers of this spectacle to have more than a touch of glamour added to the proceedings, to in a sense Hollywoodize it, may also be a factor. On the brighter side, the Part of Fortune is at 3 Aries in this chart, and in the first house. The energy, drive and ambition expended by the athletes will be second to none; they are really going to go all out to prove themselves and to put on a good show, if I may use that terminology for a spectacle about athletic prowess and abilities (Neptune again). With the opening chart Sun firmly in Leo, shining down into the sixth house of duty, service and health, the themes of Virgo are again emphasized. Truly the athletes spend a lot of time, money and effort organizing themselves into the peak physical condition needed to perform at this much anticipated ritual. Let us hope nothing comes along to stir up the oyster pot and that we can just relax and watch our fellow compatriots win, lose or draw, all the while cheering them on, not forgetting the supreme sacrifice made by the first Marathon runner, so very long long ago. In that light, here is a little of what the ancient athletes could expect once they got home, (assuming they won): “The winners at the stephanitic festivals had more than crowns as rewards. In triumphant welcomes at their return home they were deluged with honors and privileges -- possibly free meals for the rest of their lives, statues commissioned by their cities or families to be set up at Olympia, a victory ode composed by Pindar or Bacchylides and performed by a chorus in their cities, like Pindar's ode for the winner of the boys' Olympic footrace in 460 B.C.: Now for Alkimedon: blessed with victory at Olympia, by the slopes of Kronos. On first sight he was splendid; sure he proved his beauty in the test.Triumphant from each bout he put his homeland on the herald's lips -'Aegina of the long oars!' Sounds a little harsh to me but there you have it.

Great article Isabelle and every so timely with the games beginning tomorrow. Thank you so much for being one of our contributors you are a terrific asset to this site. Posted by: Sally on August 12, 2004 03:52 PMWhat an interesting article! Very intriguing, too. Many thanks, Isabelle. Now, I must hurry and read it again. Posted by: shylurker on August 12, 2004 04:39 PM another Olympic event, discovering the truth about Here, they say, you will find the real Olympics. Maybe it's the title of the article but it smacks of being sleezy. Maybe sleeze is in and some of us just didn't know it. This is a sad commentary on the Olympics. Well with Pluto in Sagittarius, I expect Collage and professional sports to be next. There won't be one single ideal we've believed that will be untouched. Education, Sports, Politics and government, Religion, the Law, corporations, all that has been operating in the dark regions of our shadows will be treated to the blinding light of the sun. Do you think the US athletes will be booed at the games? If so, do you think it will open any eyes or just close more minds? Posted by: abilene on August 12, 2004 07:16 PMInsightful, Isabelle, many thanks! abilene, I think the booing of the US athletes, which may be inevitable this Olympic Games, will shock many who still believe that we Americans are beloved around the World. And it may help them to further realize that who we have as President, and his or her ability to work with other Nations in good faith, DOES matter. And that's where Kerry has a clear, indisputable advantage over Bush. Posted by: Jonathan on August 12, 2004 07:39 PMVery good article Isabelle! I'm sorry I didn't mention it on my earlier post. Very fine article Isabelle... I find it interesting from my own studies years ago that the events in first Olympics were not restricted to sports: poets and playwrights participated. How wonderful it would be if that returned! Jonathan, I concur that USA participants will be boo'd... but I can hear Dubya's counter now... "they hate us because we're better!" And I have to wonder what Joe Sixpack will say... the same? A word here about Nov. 2nd. I discovered today that the voting machines in all the precincts in our County are being replaced with touch screen... we have had no problems with our present machines, which do leave a paper trail. I called the Governor's office (he's a Repub) to discover in answer to my query that the decision was made by "the Federal Gov't" and is being paid by monies from the HAVA (Help America Vote Act) Act... I swan, I said, imagine that... you mean Mr. Bush is sending some aid to us poor folks in the South? Our teachers have to zerox worksheets for children in their class because there's not enough funds to give the children worksheets... but we get new machines... I visited the County Election Commission a few minutes ago... the old machines are stacked against the wall and the new ones are being sent out to precincts in the county... I called the State Election Commissioner but she was in a statewide meeting with County Commissioners today and unavailable to take my call and all my questions. Her aid did tell me that the papers have been full of the news for some time now, but I informed her that I am very informed and that is not the case. Today's article in the local paper was the first news we had, indeed the Gov's office claimed not to know that machines all over the state are to be replaced... dirty tricks everywhere... well, tomorrow a.m. early I will call the State Director when she returns to her office... I am interested in who initiated this worthless unnecessary expenditure... the local editor has a lot to answer to also, as the article gave no info about the present state of machines, why we were changing out... in other words the 5 w's were nowhere in the article, but the big Dubya was behind in the shadows, in the form of the 'fed gov't'... take a look around your county folks... what's going on? And have you checked to be sure some Freeper hasn't provided your Voter Regis Office with a change of address for you? That was in yesterday's news at Kos... Really sneaky, huh? You go to vote, only to discover you are no longer registered in that precinct? Time to get busy... I'm voting absentee... but I have to wait until after September 15th to do that, because they don't have paper ballots until then! You vote absentee on the touch screen now! Ain't science grand. Heck the Canadians do it all by paper ballot, mark an x in the appropriate circle and each precinct takes about four hours to count, and returns go in... 'Course, we couldn't do anything that simple or straightforward here, could we? Sorry, but I am really wound up today! Got my (blue) car plastered with Kerry and Inez (Senate) stickers and I'm loaded for bear! Go blue, Go Kerry, Go Edwards, Go People... Go Dubya, back to Crawford... Namaste Posted by: Jo on August 12, 2004 09:48 PMJo -- how frigtening for you and your state. Howard Dean filled in for Tina Brown (??) on her weekly show Sunday P.M. He had Beverly Harris on with a lap top computer showing him and the whole world how easy it is to change the vote tally through the "back door" of the program. California has my admiration for their willingness to take action to ban all touch screen voting machines. Makes me wonder if Bush is giving funds to all republican states and we just haven't heard about it yet. On another subject, but important...does anybody know if the legal appeal by "Time Magazine" regarding the Plame Investigation will be moved through the system speedily? If not, we won't have the findings of the investigation before the election...right? Posted by: Beverly on August 12, 2004 10:21 PMMakes me shiver to read about your SC surprise, Jo. Beverly, I hope someone does know what's going on with that. And, now, I'd like to ask my question (and hope some of you have answers). Currently, there is a great rush to set up the "Terra-ism Czar" and centralize everything. Clearly, the entire system needs an overall (very deep and wide, and the 911 Commission didn't go as deep and wide as the situation demanded), but this rush to set the thing up has me concerned. Lemme see, they rushed through the Patriot Act and the Iraq War approval. Smirky wants to quickly appoint Goss director of the CIA (and for good reason: Goss will fire up the "bad" side of the agency and he will cover up, stonewall, etc., any and everything having to do with Plame, Chalabi and the more-recent outing of a Pakistan mole inside al-Qaeda. Why are they (and it seems to be bipartisan) so intent on rushing through this "Terra-ism Agency and Czar" thing? Thanks. I'm reminded of the fact that the creation of the 'Homeland Security' dept. (I swan, I still despise that name!) enabled them to bring FEMA in under that umbrella, and then FEMA brought in all the local police agencies... so that what Pallas 18 saw manifest in Savannah this past June will happen in NYC for the RNC to deal with protestors... in other words, the office of the President is omnipotent... it controls the CIA, the FBI, the Secret Service, all state and local police... and dare I say the Pentagon, and it in turn the military, NORAD, etc., etc. So, what could a CZAR accomplish? They already have one... don't they? What am I missing? Brownshirts? Teresa, thanks for the 'upper' --- did you notice the last paragraph: "Only 47 percent of respondents in the recent poll said they were very satisfied that their vote would be counted correctly this time, and only one in five said they were very confident the new touch-screen technology would alleviate Florida's election woes." You're right, Shylurker, DeLay has his fingers in the pie... that hideaway in Crawford makes all sort of mischief accessible, doesn't it? They're going to try the same tactics Pallas 18 described only more extreme and there are going to be so many people that see this as THE moment to protest all *ush stands for. Looks to me like the biggest powderkeg waiting to go off I've ever seen in my lifetime. The one thing I am grateful for is that the DNC went off as successfully as it did. People are going to naturally compare the two conventions in their minds as representative of the parties and as I see it there is no way the Democrats will not end up looking better by comparison. There sure as hell weren't 50,000 people flooding the streets screaming bloody murder that John Kerry and John Edwards are smiling too much for the good of the world. I am going to be praying every night for the safety of everyone in NYC, from every protester, to every resident, even to the low~down rat~bastard neocons. And you can help defeat Bush by doing everything in your power to fight media spin. One of the ways to do it is to help promote and support the kinds of websites that Paul Krugman featured in a New York Times op-ed last week: Media Matters, Daily Howler, Campaign Desk, and so on. Another is to join forces here and form your own media watchdog group. Another is to join John Kerry's Media Corps. Another is to start your own website listing media transgressions and linking to other such sites. (Form a webring.) Another is to come up with creative ideas about how to counter media spin and sharing those ideas here. This is the first step. The next discussion we should have is about the one-dimensional responses to the Kerry-Edwards strategy. Some of you are playing checkers while Kerry is playing chess. I will provide you with some insight into the thinking behind individual decisions. Let's talk. Why not protest the media? Why not stand outside their doors, in their face and demand action? See how their advertisers like it. A convention might show violence, but from where? The Police and Fire Union is threatening a strike that week, if the National Guard is called in there could be clashes between those groups or between protestors and National Guard or there could be a pre-programmed terror attack. The energy could go absolutely anywhere. Protestors are "the People" or representative of "the People" and there is nothing to the US Moon from the convention, however I will take a closer look at the progressions of the US chart related to the convention aspects. As for the debates, they should actually favor Kerry. Timing is everything in astrology, it doesn't matter who the person is and Jupiter is coming to Kerry's mid-heaven in October. That's a time when he could stand up and say blah, blah, blah and people will see him as fantastic, even if he sounds like an idiot. I always see the helicopters from my window that the President flies into town on. With good binoculars you can see them at the heliport. (Spit, pew, snork, gag). I had enough of all this during 911. My signs might say: I saw 911 with my own eyes, Go Home! Or Ground Zero is not a tourist attraction, go home! I heard a woman drew a swatstika on her handbag and close up it said 'Vote Republican'. However, I think the best most cleverest is the Billionares for Bush troop (who by the way are looking for volunteers NYC people). They dress up in gowns, tux's, gold chains with giant $ medalians. They have funny slogans like :4 More Wars, Leave No Billionaire Behind. The Republicans have backed themselves into a corner on this one. The far-right is absolutely rabid on the subject and they have all but lost the majority of the American public. The Repugs cannot take it off the ballot and when you factor in the Gay Vote, and their friends and their families, and gays who haven't voted before, the Republicans are looking at a fairly large voting block. It's going to be hard to rally the gay Republican voting block if they don't handle this better than they have. But there's another story from Florida that deserves our attention. State police officers have gone into the homes of elderly black voters in Orlando and interrogated them as part of an odd "investigation" that has frightened many voters, intimidated elderly volunteers and thrown a chill over efforts to get out the black vote in November. The officers, from the Florida Department of Law Enforcement, which reports to Gov. Jeb Bush, say they are investigating allegations of voter fraud that came up during the Orlando mayoral election in March. Officials refused to discuss details of the investigation, other than to say that absentee ballots are involved. They said they had no idea when the investigation might end, and acknowledged that it may continue right through the presidential election. When I asked why [all the people interviewed were black], he said, "That's just the people we selected out of a random sample to interview." Not surprisingly, many of the elderly black voters who found themselves face to face with state police officers in Orlando are members of the Orlando League of Voters, which has been very successful in mobilizing the city's black vote. According to Mr. Egan, "People who have voted by absentee ballot for years are refusing to allow campaign workers to come to their homes. And volunteers who have participated for years in assisting people, particularly the elderly or handicapped, are scared and don't want to risk a criminal investigation." I recall from a psych class the statement that a psychopath (sociopath) is as comfortable with one gender as another sexually, because he (or she) sees all other people as objects anyway. Personally I do believe that Bush is a sociopath. He has no sense of boundaries (have you seen all those pics on the net of him rubbing some bald guy or another's head at public events?) then there was the incident of his drying his hands on the dress of a woman working in a tv studio, his telling the Canadian PM's male executive assistant that "you have a pretty face"--and obviously he doesn't think "evil-doers" (people who disagree with him) have a right to life or liberty or even due process. I think if Bush had grown up in a poor dysfuctional family instead of a rich one he would be in jail right now. Posted by: Barbara on August 16, 2004 02:59 PMOMG. Empty your wallet except for your new id(s) and some cash. Get a well-worn right-wing paperback book and put it in your pocket. Remember your new name. Sign your oath with that name. Wear a Bush/Cheney button. Imagine your persona and be that person. I recommend slightly goofy. She was a Libra and a Southern lady so I was not suprised when she asked the nurse to wait a moment while she spoke with someone the rest of us could not see. Clearly she was asking her (invisible) guide to stand by while she talked with the nurse, Good manners to the end. I am so glad that my daughter was able to speak with her before the end. We loved and honored her, and there were no flowers, and no thoughts that had not been delivered beforehand. It is so comforting to know that we have already loved and honored the wise ones before us. Posted by: on August 16, 2004 07:45 PMThat was me about my dear mother-in-law's passing. Sorry. Posted by: Barbara on August 16, 2004 07:48 PMBarbara Well, this just HAD to be said......G*d is the biggest abortionist around...spontaneous abortion occurrs so much more often than induced abortion that it makes G*d the most prolific of abortionists. In addition, Nature produces (in Pennyroyal, a member of the mint family) an abortifacient which can kill as well as induce menstral flow and induce labor. Men don't take the risk here, women do. And it is THEIR right to do so. They are their bodies....and only a dominator culture ( to quote Terrence McKenna) would make 1/2 of the human species subject slaves to the other half. Everyone...find a copy of his book Food for the Gods....it explains why our dominator culture is dying and the cooperative culture is reviving. Mike, thanks for the hello about the video. I also have an additional "theme" here....my son-in-law's sister lives in Punta Gorda where her husband is a Sheriff....he was in charge of the shelter in Punta Gorda....and the last people he got in were his wife and baby. Their house is standing, without portions of the roof over the baby's room. They are both 40....she is Leo, I think he is Pisces....his mother died the same day as Reagan in June. Her condo was left to them....her parents here in CA saw the building where the condo is on Saturday on TV...it has been condemned. So talk about a midlife crisis...(haven't we all had this stuff happen? I sure have)....your mother dies and your two "root" homes are destroyed....but at least, although without amenities, they are all alive.
blink blink Judi, glad to hear your family is okay. Weird...while I was posting about Punta Gorda, Janet posted about losing her mother....I didn't understand this exchange by Barbara and Mimi....but in posting about the death of John's mother in June in Punta Gorda I might add that her name was Dotty. That's a sobering experience and everything else does pale. I can share with you that, like the other Sharon, "Shade," I lost my mom 3 years ago, 2 weeks after my wedding (which she could not attend, along with her youngest sister, who we lost 2 weeks later - they were both my best friends). Mom was in a nursing home and, before that, needed assistance for about 5 years due to the onset of dementia and various medical conditions. Yet, somehow, she never lost her strong & fierce individuality, warmth, love, and, best of all, humor. She had given me a large, gold, art-deco locket 30 years before (an 8 year anniversary present from my father). We both had the same initials at the time and these were engraved on the front. During the years, and during our many arguments, she always told me I would miss her when she was gone. She was right, of course, however, I also know she is ALWAYS with me. In fact (and I have mentioned this here previously), my intuitive counselor told me that her energy is around my heart (I especially feel the connection when I wear the locket but also feel it without the jewelry) and expresses herself as a very, very beautiful golden, pinkish light. Mom has passed the information along that I will never be alone -- that no matter what happens in my life -- the rest of my life I will not be alone as she will not leave me. She has also "said" that she is now back in the energy of her youth, very free, very happy, very high energy. Now, this feels true because my mom used to tell me that she was so active and restless that she could never sit still and would bounce and jiggle anytime she was forced to sit still. So, I am happy for her. Please allow yourself all the time and space you need to grieve, and know that, like all of our mothers AND fathers, she will ALWAYS be with you. She will always send you blessings and ease your way. I share this with you, Janet, and with Shade, and with all of you. At that session, all of my relatives sent a group message -- to pray for peace in the Mideast. So I do. Pusuant to that message, I was doing a search on psychic predictions and came across a very nice website: www.stacewolf.com. Under her stuff about the future, she discusses a meditation where she was told that the changes to come will be gradual and much of it will be predicted by scientists in advance, giving folks time to make plans. Her vision of the future holds wonderful things and she seems to say, as Sally does, that life will continue in a normal, natural way, as it does everyday -- with the sun shining and the moon glowing and the stars twinkling every day and night. Love to all, Sharon K Thank you all for your comments concerning my attending the bush/cheney rally. I called to see where I could pick up the tickets and was told a minimum of four times that I must provide a picture id. Not so with the Kerry camp! However, my husband is most uneasy about me attending. He has tried several tactics. First one was that he had a bad vibe about it, which did not work. Second, he repeated my own words of “it doesn’t matter what other people do. It only matters what you do because you’re responsible for you.” That one didn’t work either so he finally said, “you are a terrible liar and you will be a nervous wreck the whole time.” Sorry guys, that one worked. The funny thing is he has no problem with me protesting the rally and would even join me. Nice to have someone looking out for my soul. And slavery, which is where I would come in at, created even more descendants as aristocratic slave owners had slave children. And how many lower level nobles finally had to marry lesser ranked, but richer merchant families to survive, or even had to take up a trade? It is the fundies who have made it so, and Dubya who picked it up and ran with it. What is politial is Iraqi babies being bombed and children playing among undetonated daisy cutters being maimed and killed; Iraqi children being detained in prisons and tortured and raped and some murdered --- while under our care (or lack thereof, or perpetrators thereof). International agencies are screaming for these children to be released to their families. Meanwhile female troops are being raped in the USA military and left pregnant, and they are not allowed to seek medical advice about termination of the pregnancy nor are they receiving retribution for violation of their bodies. Meanwhile, some American children are going everyday without enough food and without necessary medical care. Mothers are having to work leaving their children at home alone after school. my dear cousins (and fat duncan): i'm adopted so i don'1 know if i'm a prince or a pine cone. when i was about 8, i saw a marx brother's movie set in an imaginary european country, 'fredonia.' there were all sorts of wacky royals and aristocrats. it looked so fun, my fantasy for a few years was that i was the true crown prince of 'fredonia.' after this conversation, i am going to claim this title as my very own. there is just one species, DNA, and were all related; unless, of course, DNA is just a holographic representation of the deeper unifying principle...which i'm sure is ultimately benevolent. janet, my heart goes out to you. Now, Haley Waldman's mother is pushing the Diocese of Trenton and the Vatican to make an exception, saying the sacrament should be changed to accommodate the girl's condition. Roman Catholic doctrine holds that communion wafers must have at least some unleavened wheat, as did the bread served at the Last Supper of Jesus Christ before his crucifixion. In May, the girl received her her first Holy Communion from a priest who offered her a wheat-free host. But last month, the diocese told the priest that Waldman's sacrament would not be validated by the church because of the substitute wafer. Yeah, this is what Jesus was all about...the details. It's a centralising govt. detirmined to take power away from the people even more than we've experienced in the past. How can freedom be defended by the imposition of a Police state? For years and years, Britain has been under terrorist threat and did not resort to 'amber alerts' or 'Patriot acts' - people went on with their lives and the police got on with the job. Since the 90's, this threat has lessened to the point where Northern Ireland is functioning with all parties trying for peace. How? By communication. As is it America, I suspect the terror threat to be a scam - much as Carter's push for a re-call election in Venezuela was in line with the US government agenda. Follow the path of the oil pipelines and you will see the 'terrorist threat'. James Rubin was on C4 the other night confirming that Europe would just have to get used to US foreign policy -I wish I could see an improvement under Kerry but that seems unlikely to happen. It seems to me that you are stuffed no matter who you vote for as both your major parties have been bought up by Corporate interests. They own the Government. They buy your laws. They decide who your 'choice' is between. Your politicians do what they are told. (Edwards was selected as VP candidate after a Bilderberg meeting). This time your choice is between two skull and bones members who are both mega-rich and, according to my research, 3rd cousins. Great choice! Please don't get too defensive - I'm not America bashing - I know it's the same everywhere in the western world. Personally, I think the best thing anyone can do is switch off the telly, radio and stop reading newspapers and log into the net. Find your own 'news' and keep an open mind. By the way Joe, if you think GWB rocks then fine but what's he ever done for you? What have the Republican party ever done for you? How have they made your life better? You've admitted to being in the minority - since when do minorities win elections? 2000? Posted by: Jase on August 17, 2004 04:19 PMHey Jase No, not a minority in politics, a minority on this site. As for what President Bush has done for me, there are so many things he's directly done that a complete list would be difficult to produce. But for example, I run a small business, and with the amount of money I saved with his tax rebates I was able to employ 10 new employees. Also, he has sent more money than any previous president to Africa in search for a cure for AIDs, something that I deeply hope will have a cure found in the years ahead especially since any research will help close friends of mine crippled from the disease. He has also helped to fund faith based initiatives, which are wonderful programs meant to help bring people back to religion and bring them closer to god. I have several relatives who voluntarily enlisted in the militairy, and this President has definitely improved funding, boosted morale and by all means is proud of this country and its achievements. This is of course in stark contrast with the negative things John Kerry has said and continues to say about this country and its militairy. I dunno, for me the choice is obvious. George W. Bush is definitely a better choice than John Kerry, particularly for security and especially for the economy. Posted by: Joe on August 17, 2004 04:46 PMWelcome, Jase! Pres Carter is no oligarch supporter, but helped monitored the "re-call" election forced by the minority group of El pinko-supremacists against Chavez... & they LOST. There's a HUGE difference between President Kerry & bushaholic. For instance, Kerry has a 100% 20-yr record of caring for the Natural World. There's a campaign "out there" to make them the same--to strike dispair/hopelessness into the heart--but they're not the same. Besides, we've already heard that old disingenuous lil tune at the 2000 dyselection... no difference between President Gore & bushaAWOL. Yes, there are... HUGE differences between them. They may all be El pinkos, but they ain't all "oligarchal supremacists!" ;O) Posted by: JoannaOregon on August 17, 2004 04:50 PMThank you very much for your welcome, Mimi! Still, they're related, come from the same background, both members of the same club and essentially have the same foreign policy - especially in the key area of the middle east. Joe, thank you for your answer! Does it worry you that the deficit has reached record levels? Not a sound basis for an economy. Still, don't trust the guy. What he has done in Iraq and Afghanistan I find morally repugnant and reluctance to truly investigate 9/11 makes very suspicious of his motives. Anyway, Joe, you speak your mind and vote for what you believe is right. A question for all the astrologers: What are the key indicators in a chart for a country's economy? How does this relate to an election? Can we tell if a state is more geared towards democracy, monarchy or fascism? Posted by: jase on August 17, 2004 05:29 PMWelcome, Jase. Speaking for myself, there is simply NO worse person for the job than George W Bush. I am from Texas, GWB and I go way back. Step one is to get him out of the White House, otherwise there won't be any America left in four years. Step two is to hold Kerry's feet to the fire just as strongly if not more. True, Kerry is from the same world as GWB, but I believe Kerry will be a helluvalot easier to influence than Dimson will ever be. One step at a time, friend, one step at a time. NEW YORK -- An anti-war group and an organization of Arab Americans filed a lawsuit late Friday challenging the city's denial of a permit for a civil rights rally in Central Park two days before the Republican National Convention. The anti-war ANSWER coalition and the National Council of Arab Americans said in the lawsuit in U.S. District Court in Manhattan that they were unfairly denied a permit for an Aug. 28 rally on the Great Lawn by the city Department of Parks and Recreation.
Joe, are you aware that Oscar Wilde was gay? I've been to his grave in Paris, it's covered with kisses in red lipstick, I think from both genders. Are you comfortable with that? Posted by: Joe on August 17, 2004 06:44 PMhow is everyone posting double and triple? http://www.boston.com/news/nation/washington/articles/2004/08/16/returning_troops_lose_benefits/ WASHINGTON -- Increasing numbers of National Guard and Reserve troops who have returned from war in Iraq and Afghanistan are encountering new battles with their civilian employers at home. Jobs have been eliminated, benefits reduced, and promotions forgotten. But some soldiers find that the Uniformed Services Employment and Reemployment Rights Act can't protect them. Larry Gill couldn't return as a police officer in Thomasville, Ala., because a grenade injured a foot, making it impossible for him to chase criminals. Jerry Chambers of Oberlin, Kan., found budget cuts had eliminated his job as a consultant to prevent substance abuse. Ron Vander Wal, of Pollock, S.D., was first told that his job as a customer representative was eliminated. After filing a civil lawsuit seeking damages, he was hired. The Labor Department said the number of complaints would have been higher if the government had not made an aggressive effort to explain the law to employers. Elaine L. Chao , the secretary of labor, said the department is drafting rules to spell out the law's protections for service personnel. "We've got to do everything we can to protect their reemployment rights," she said. The department was receiving about 900 formal complaints a year before Sept. 11, 2001. The statistical picture after that, based on fiscal years ending Sept. 30: 1,218 cases opened in 2002. 1,327 cases in 2003. 1,200 cases from Oct. 1, 2003, through July 31. If projected over 12 months, the figure would be 1,440, the department said. The department upheld or settled soldiers' complaints in one-third of last year's cases, while another third were found to have no merit. The remaining cases are inactive or closed, often because the government lost contact with the soldier or the soldier returned to active duty. When Guard and Reserve troops returned from the first Gulf War, there was one complaint for every 54 soldiers leaving active duty. Currently, with the government's aggressive drive to inform employers of the law, the figure has improved to one in 69. The complaints represent a small percentage of the quarter-million Guard and Reserve troops who have left active duty since the Sept. 11 attacks. Not all returning troops are bitter about their job loss. Chambers, the substance abuse consultant, said budget cuts left his former nonprofit employer no choice but to eliminate his job. "I don't fault them for that, and I don't hold grudges," Chambers said. He was among the lucky ones, finding employment with his Reserve unit, the 1013th Quartermaster Co., based in North Platte and McCook, Neb. For others, finding their jobs gone was a hardship, emotionally and economically. Gill, the former Alabama police officer with an injured leg, had to give up a career that began in 1992 and followed the path his father and brother had taken. While some service members fault former employers for firing them as they served their country, most complaints involved alleged denial of benefits, promotions, and raises, said officials from the Labor Department and a Pentagon organization, Employer Support of the Guard and Reserve. © Copyright 2004 Globe Newspaper Company. Hi Dommael & JoannaOregon and thank you very much for your welcome! I have always found your posts interesting, informative and witty! As I made clear in my first post, I am no fan of GWB at all and I can see why you would prefer Kerry as, in my eyes anyway, he comes across as far more reasonable and intelligent man for starters. Hey, it's alright for me I don't have to live under him - or do I? Unfortunately, whilst campaigning financing and lobbyists hold as much sway as they do in DC, I think all politicians are in the pockets of their real paymasters. To my mind that translates into something other than democracy - corporatism, private government? To have real democracy the people need to be listened to ALL the time - not just every 4 years. I also think the powers that be have decided to throw their weight behind Kerry. The US needs more credibility overseas but you're quite right you'll need to watch him. Posted by: jase on August 17, 2004 06:47 PMmisandronist, I meant to write. Considering you don't bother to read what I write, and you insist on making assumptions. I could care less if you choose not to respond. Even if Kerry wins this election, I don't believe we can expect the impossible from him. The plutocracy is ingrained in this country and it will take a major upheaval to dislodge it/them. My belief is that the transit of Pluto thru Capricorn beginning in 2008, will be the force to upend the control of the corporations. A decade from now when Uranus in Aries squares that Pluto in Capricorn and it forms aspects to the USA Sun sq Saturn, that will be key. There will also be the USA Pluto return in 2022. http://www.stariq.com/Main/Articles/P0000518.htm ***The Pluto-Uranus conjunction of the 60s changed American cultural assumptions about race, gender, economic justice and the right of government to induct people into the military. It's therefore a good bet that when Pluto and Uranus create a grand cross with the U.S. Sun-square-Saturn in 2014, we can look for another time of social upheaval and changing cultural assumptions. Whatever revolutionary angst has built up the most force will manifest (Pluto) in ways that cannot be predicted (Uranus). Tied to the Past Although the Pluto-Uranus combinations of the 1700s and 1960s moved us toward democracy, something like an umbilical cord continued to tie us to medieval autocracy. What had developed by the 1990s was governance by plutocracy masked as democracy. The rich still controlled democratically elected lawmakers. The Pluto-anchored grand cross of 2014 appears destined to sever the umbilical cord to medieval autocracy and establish a purer form of democracy. How this will come about, however, is unpredictable (Uranus). ***
"...that is the problem with liberals, you always assume." It's a good thing you can assume we liberals always make assumptions, otherwise I'd have something to make fun of. Jase, I agree with you, but what would you have us do? Shade, you are absolutely right. 2020 when the Grand Conjunction occurs (Jupiter/Saturn) again it will be in conjunction at 0 Aquarius, an air sign. The materialistic heaviness of the last conj. in Taurus (in 2000) will begin to lift and we will be looking at the result of supporting the plutocracy and how that's affected the world. Corporations (global and national) will be experiencing some tremendous upheavals as the people begin to turn on them and see what global havoc they have brought.Pluto is right now moving back and forth over the 1992/93 conjunction of Uranus/Neptune in Capricorn, breaking up what was started at that time, not only for countries, but for the collective and for individuals. Posted by: Sally on August 17, 2004 09:19 PMA few years ago I did some return cycles (amazing how many wars take place with major Gemini outer planet placements)....and a complete Pluto cycle comes in during that decade between 2020 and 2030 from the Revolutionary War beginnings. Neptune completes a cycle in that decade which started during the Civil War and the events leading up to the war. Uranus completes the cycle which started in the Depression....the conjunction of Pluto and Neptune takes 500 years to complete....it last happened in the 1890s, in Gemini. So we won't be around for that completion...(could be the square takes place in that decade). We are in the beginning of a cycle which, going back 500 years to the late 1300's, ushered in the Renaissance. I wonder what they will call THIS cycle? Hey....that royalty thing really pushed some major buttons with some folks....well, don't be so sensitive ..... and don't assume that you are "just peasants"....that is reverse snobbism and probably isn't true anyway.....! BTW....under the first King George (1990, not England!) I lost my home, my career, got audited by the IRS for a tax shelter that was legal when I was in it but congress changed the rules, got fined 100% penalties because my investment LOST money and ended up in chapter 13. Now I am still in chapter 13, and under this King George the Lamebrained, I have no work (advertising gets hit first in a recession) while living in an economy fueled by people who have gotten enormous tax breaks. I don't now make enough money to pay taxes, but I still OWE enormous amounts of back taxes. And we will owe still more because of this illbegotten, rapacious, ugly collection of murderous, cold and nasty neocons. I don't know HOW people can say that Kerry is "no better" than Bush.....since I am at least 10th cousins to both of them, I will be the first to say ..... ideas count....vote the ideas. Don't forget, they said Al Gore and Bush were "just the same".....and no way they would have been, it is just more trash. Tune in and DROP out of major news media. Posted by: judi on August 17, 2004 10:12 PMBoy, it really pisses me off when people say things like "there is no difference" ....they are all just corporate shills.....anyone listening to Kerry or Teresa HK wouldn't have made a remark like that.
