NIXON/BUSH BY LARRY SHEA
The 30th Anniversary of Nixon’s Resignation and
the Moment of Truth for GW Bush: Saturn’s Transit Conjoins the Natal Sun of Both the USA and George Bush
It is fair to say that nothing quite compels an individual or a nation to concentrate their attention more rigorously upon the defining events in their life and their times than a predictably sobering conjunction of transiting Saturn to their natal Sun. Just such a defining event manifested nearly thirty years ago on the afternoon of August 8, 1974 when an exact transit of Saturn to the USA’s natal Sun took place as a despondent and deeply disturbed Richard M. Nixon went on television, live from the White House, to announce to the nation and to the world his decision to resign from the office of the presidency; official at noon the following day. This unprecedented event was a deeply embarrassing moment in the history of the United States.
This country is now in the midst of another historical moment of embarrassment As Andy Rooney so aptly put it recently, “The day that the world learned that American soldiers had tortured Iraqi prisoners belongs high on the list of worst things that ever happened to our country”. [1] The prisoner scandal has the potential to become for George W. Bush what Watergate was for Richard M. Nixon; his swan song. Astrologically, the parallels between the two scandals are there. Transiting Saturn will have made an exact conjunction to the USA’s natal Sun, just as it did nearly 30 years ago when President Nixon announced his resignation from office. However, an extra dimension has been added in for President Bush with the exact conjunction of transiting Saturn to his natal Sun (A fall from power or prestige due to overweening ambition) occurring only three days after Saturn exactly conjoins the USA’s natal Sun (The judgment of an individual for their failures). As the late important “Watergate” functionary Sam Dash put it when he summed up Nixon’s behavior before his resignation, “Nixon behaved like he was a sovereign who had the authority to act above the law, a president who brought us close to dictatorship.” [2] President Bush has the potential, if not the burning ambition, to surpass President Nixon in both of those capacities.
The fateful decision to turn Iraqi prisons, particularly Abu Ghraib prison, into living hell may have come about when transiting Saturn was stationary for over a week at the end of October 2003. During that period Saturn was only four minutes from an exact conjunction to the USA’s natal Sun (The creation of a cruel and inhuman system). It now seems clear that the criminal system of prisoner detention and interrogation in Iraq had been effectively installed by November of 2003 on specific orders from the highest level at the pentagon. As the Commander in Chief, how could President Bush not have known about these criminal orders?
The attempted cover-up of these despicable war crimes, by the mendacious and diddling Don Rumsfeld and his twisted crew of cowardly lackeys in the pentagon, the private contract companies and the intelligence community began to melt-down and unravel in January of 2004. This was during the period just before Pluto exactly opposed natal Mars (Torture, rape and murder) in the USA’s birth chart on January 26th. Shortly before this date, it had been ascertained by some of Rumsfeld’s boorish henchmen that several condemning photos of these brutal and inexcusable war crimes had gone “rogue”, and that this damning evidence now had the potential to go public.
By the time Uranus had exactly trined the USA’s natal Jupiter on April 24th (A large breaking story), some of the shocking photos from the prison scandal were indeed about to go public on CBS, much to the chagrin of the pentagon and against its expressed wishes. The initial story and a handful of photos from Abu Ghraib prison aired on 60 Minutes on Thursday, April 29th. The next day this deeply disturbing news along with several horrifying images exploded all over the world exactly when Jupiter conjoined the USA’s natal Uranus (Huge shock wave impacts multitudes).
The exact opposition of Pluto to the USA’s natal Mars (A fight for political survival) on May 24, 2004 coincided with the extraordinary broadcast of a blatant propaganda piece about the state of the failed Iraqi war that was delivered by a desperate President Bush from the National War College in PA. This same Pluto opposition (Setbacks from rash actions) also coincided with the bad news that the US military commander in Iraq, General Ricardo Sanchez, who was evidently present during some of the horrific prisoner interrogations at Abu Ghraib prison, was being recalled to the United States earlier than had been expected.
Forebodingly, slow-moving Pluto is not going to be traveling very far from its exact opposition to the USA’s natal Mars (The torturers and their victims). It will exactly conjoin natal Mars again on November 25, 2004. So, it is reasonable to expect a steady stream of bad news about the prisoner scandal and the occupation of Iraq to continue to surface between now and the November election.
Once transiting Saturn has exactly conjoined the USA’s natal Sun (Crisis, denial, pessimism, gloom and failure) on June 11th, the prisoner scandal will have come full circle from its putative beginning in late October of 2003. The Bush administration already knows that it is big trouble politically because of its diving poll numbers. The prisoner scandal and the failed war in Iraq have already been hugely damaging to President Bush’s reputation, and these two paramount issues have the potential to become a serious threat to the only chance that George W. Bush will ever have of being elected president of the United States.
Therefore, you can certainly expect the desperate Bush-Cheney gang of neocon warmongers and fearmongers to respond to their political woes by cranking up the volume of fear (Saturn and Pluto) in order to distract the American people from the prisoner scandal and the quagmire in Iraq. At this point in the election, this failed administration has no other viable option other than to exercise fear. Fear is the only policy that has worked successfully for them in the past, even though this craven policy is currently beginning to wear very thin.
Therefore, they are quite willing to justify a constant barrage of scary terror news (Pluto-Mars), even if they have to fabricate it. As I am writing this piece during the last week of May, it has just been announced in a stunning propaganda display by Attorney General John Ashcroft that federal officials have been picking up non-specific and totally unsubstantiated “credible intelligence” about an imminent terrorist attack by al Qaida somewhere inside the US sometime between now and the 2004 presidential election. To his credit, Homeland Security Secretary Tom Ridge played-down Ashcroft’s totally unsubstantiated threats by refusing to raise the terror alert level.
That Ashcroft’s alleged ‘terror period’ also coincides with the period between Pluto’s two exact oppositions to the USA’s natal Mars (“A police state with rigid military controls”) [3] is troubling, but for another reason. Who would be the actual beneficiary of another terrorist attack or attacks inside the United States between now and the 2004 presidential election? Would it really be Osama’s al Qaida or some other ‘rogue’ terrorist network, or would it be plummeting-in-the-polls George Bush? President Bush’s pathetically low poll numbers prior to 911 skyrocketed after those tragic events. Everyone knows, even the terrorists, that Americans tend to rally around their president in a time of national crisis.
Perhaps the November election would have to be re-scheduled, if a series of small-scale terror events produced a significant amount of casualties? Or even more ominously, a large-scale ‘terrorist’ event could lead, as Condoleeza Rice has suggested, to the cancellation of the November election altogether. Could such an eventuality also lead to the loss of our freedom and rights because our government has been placed under martial law in order to prevent any further mass-casualty producing events?
Just such a frightening scenario was outlined in some detail by the former head of Central Command, retired general Tommy Franks, during an interview that appeared in the December 2003 issue of Cigar Aficionado magazine. [4] But I’ll be even more frank than Tommy was in his interview. What the good general was really talking about was a military dictatorship of the United States with Dick Cheney’s dummy, GW Bush, as the dictator.
So, then the real question becomes: Just how desperate is this “Fourth Reich of the Rich” to hold onto their usurped power? If you think that I am being unnecessarily alarming, then you might want to consider carefully the following statement made by the newly-selected President Bush to the top four congressional leaders from both houses on December 18, 2000: “If this were a dictatorship, it would be a heck of a lot easier, just so long as I’m the dictator.” [5] Now, the way that I read that threatening statement is that, with a very tight Mercury-Pluto conjunction so close to his Leo Ascendant (fearful with a strong urge for power, suspicious and secretive, and The need to communicate to the masses) and an almost as tight third house Moon-Jupiter conjunction (The tendency to play God, or to think that one is actually in two-way communication with God.) very close to his Nadir, this grandly deluded Skull & Bones dude wasn’t even close to half joking with the disconcerted congressmen.
Unfortunately for the vaunted ambitions of this deluded ‘dude’, Saturn will have made an exact conjunction to his natal Sun (loss of authority, power and prestige; defensiveness) on June 14, 2004. Thus begins the moment of truth for this hollow failure of a president: who failed to protect the US from the 911 attacks; who has failed to capture Usama bid Laden; who lied to congress and the American people about Saddam’s WMD in order to cynically manipulate support for the disastrous war in Iraq; who not only has failed to quell the terrorist threat from al Qaida and other terrorist networks around the world but also has increased the threat of terror exponentially; who has tossed America’s moral compass into a murky abyss, and who has turned our many good friends and allies around the world into harsh critics, or worse, of our aggressive, repressive and regressive foreign policies.
Throughout the summer and fall of 2004 Saturn will continue to hector this contemptuous and incompetent presidential poseur. The planet’s onerous influence on him will be preceded by an exact conjunction of Pluto to his true lunar south node (“A tarnished personal destiny”), [6] which will have occurred on June 22nd. A final exact conjunction of transiting Pluto to his true lunar south node will take place on November 2nd of this year, which is, of course, the same day that American voters may finally be allowed to elect their first president in eight years. On July 8, 2004 transiting Saturn will exactly square our fearful leader’s natal Moon (fear of exposure, depression, pessimism, gloom and dejection).
By this time the prisoner scandal will have grown to an even more critical mass during the exact square of Saturn by transit to the USA’s natal Saturn (critical developments, political difficulties and losses) also having occurred on June 22nd. Then on July 18th, transiting Saturn exactly squares the president’s natal Jupiter (numerous failures highlighted, increasing pessimism, feelings of inadequacy, the increasing inability to cope with the future). On September 9th, shortly after the Republican National Convention in NYC (August 30 – September 2), an exact transit of Saturn from Bush’s twelfth house will square his natal Midheaven (loss of power and prestige). If I were this president, then around this time I would be thinking seriously about my impending retirement to ‘el rancho viejo’ in Crawford, Texas.
But Saturn’s heavyweight buffeting of Bush doesn’t end there. The ringed planet’s 2004 finale begins for him with a double-bill thriller as it exactly conjoins his natal Saturn in the twelfth house (a major life crisis, a tragic ending, despairing over one’s failures) on October 8th and then again on its exact retrograde return on December 8, 2004. Oucheroo, that’s two dreaded Saturn returns in the house of self-undoing happening on both sides of the November election. That’s gotta hurt! Could this imperious son of a Bush with his imperial intentions, once again, lose his bid for actual election to the presidency of the United States? Barring a neoconservative ‘October-style Surprise’, which could come in the form of a stage-managed terrorist event inside of the United States at a suitable critical juncture in the USA’s natal chart somewhere between now and November 2, 2004, the answer is an emphatic, “You can bet on it!”.
However, the USA and the rest of the world won’t be completely out of the woods until this lame-duck administration has given up its power during the January 2005 inauguration. The period of time between the election and the inauguration is when things could get really dicey. On December 23, 2004 transiting Pluto will make an exact square to the USA’s natal Neptune (“controls over centers of political power”) [7], The USA’s natal Neptune happens to be very closely conjoined to its natal Midheaven (“spies who undermine the national security”). [8] Unfortunately, we can only speculate as to when Pluto will exactly square the USA’s Midheaven (“destructive self-centered terrorist
actions”). [9] But you get the picture. The Bush administration may not go quietly into history.

Please welcome Larry Shea our newest contributor to Astroworld. He has written a great piece regarding the connections between Bush/Nixon. Today is the 30th Anniversary of Nixon's resignation, and you will find this timely for the anniversary and events today.
Larry, much thanks and a hearty and big welcome! You have give us much to chew on over the coming days. For starters thought, (and I'll be back after digesting your article further), many of us here sense that the "Bush Administration may not go quietly into history," and that is what concerns us.
Again, WELCOME.
Absolutely great article! Welcome Mr. Shea and I look forward to more!!
It could be in the works as we speak to get certain electors to "vote" for Bush regardless of the outcome in their respective states. December 13, 2004 may be a good day to look at. This would be terrible, as it is actually legal, I believe. And if Kerry's team sued it would go to the Supreme Court and we know how they'd vote. Could they pull it off?? Just a thought.
Wow, the amazing "Captain Sally of Astroworld" has brought aboard another great astrologer! What a fabulous article that Larry Shea has written and with references too! This article sure explains about Nixon better than any history book in school and to combine it with Bushies charts is just brilliant! Welcome to Mr Shea.
I have an astrological question. What Larry says about the Jupiter/Uranus conjunction spooked me because I have a natal Jupiter/Uranus conjunction in Cancer in the 6th that I've had to deal with[the worst being a bizarre bone injury from a car accident that will never heal.]so I'm wandering if that's all I can expect from my nervous couple?
Thanks again...Jill
Really well said Larry Shea ! I am looking forward to more of your work! Welcome!
Well, I'll swan, but that is one amazing article, Larry. Many thanks. Much to think about.
Copied from dailyKos:
"Who knows, maybe John Kerry's convention speech, which the CW has declared had no bounce, was specifically tailored toward bouncing in battleground states. August SUSA polling is showing Kerry beating Bush by 52-41 in Michigan, by 53-41 in Pennsylvania, and by 51-43 in Washington. ARG polling done in August shows Kerry up 50-43 in Florida, and atop Bush 49-42 in New Hampshire. Outside the battleground states, Kerry leads Bush by 20% in New Jersey in a poll done by Rutgers. And Bush leads Kerry by just 2% in Tennessee in a SUSA poll. Both done in August."
Shylurker, I'm hearing that Bush is only up by 5% in the very right-wing state of Georgia!! Only a month ago he was up 15%. I will try to find where I read that, so I can link. Unbelievable!

Tapes Suggest Nixon Prolonged Vietnam War to Aid Re-Election
By Chris Kahn
Associated Press
The Aug. 3, 1972, conversation, which was released in December by the National Archives with other recorded conversations, shows that Nixon did worry about how his administration would be viewed if South Vietnam fell.
Some historians, including biographer Jeffrey Kimball, consider it evidence that Nixon sacrificed American forces in his quest for a second term, keeping them engaged to ensure that the South Vietnamese government wouldn't collapse before the election.

Wow! This is an a$$ kicking article! What wonderful astrologers are congregating in Astroworld!
I have to wonder what the conservative party springs from? The patterns are dark and the people always seem to suffer such loss.
I do hope there is some peace involved in these times.
Agreed, Pat. Heartily!
Seems the Dems are slowly turning it around (though it's still a long way to Nov 2nd).
Crystal blue persuasion!
And with that, I'll be glad to go to your questions. Go ahead, Helen.
Q The President said at the community college that the people who we're fighting are cruel, have no conscience, and kill innocent people. And my question is, during our two wars in the last three years, have we killed any innocent people?
MR. McCLELLAN: The United States military goes to great lengths to make sure that we minimize any loss of innocent human life, and they go out of their way to make sure that that happens. This administration is strongly committed to making sure we do everything we can to minimize the loss of innocent human life.
Q I didn't ask you that. I asked you if we have killed any innocent people.
MR. McCLELLAN: And I would point out that this -- that the war in Iraq was one where we were able to target and remove a brutal regime from power while minimizing any collateral damage --
Q Did we kill any innocent people?
MR. McCLELLAN: -- or loss of innocent human life. We certainly do not target innocent human civilians. And there are terrorists and others in Iraq, former regime elements who do target innocent civilians, innocent Iraqis. They are enemies of freedom and peace. What we have done --
Q Seventy thousand tons of bombs --
MR. McCLELLAN: -- is liberated the Iraqi people and provided hope for innocent Iraqis.
Q How about the people who are dead?
MR. McCLELLAN: Go ahead.
God I love Helen!
Great article!
An aside to Raj and Abilene: Sun in the 7th problematic?? Mine is in Libra no less. I never go anywhere alone if I can help it even if I just take the dog but I don't consider it a problem. Decision making is a back and forth issue for me. Have to consider everybody else's viewpoint. My problems arise because of the sun's conjunction to Mars and Jupiter, the square to the moon, the inconjunct to the asc and sextiles to Uranus and Saturn.
larry, superb! saturn, you provide a realistic 'look at an old devil.' we're fortunate that the general staff of the services and the ex-generals are largely hostile to bush, rumsfield, and the neocons. these folks would do more than sacrifice soldiers. my impression is that they would trash the whole country to stay in power and avoid retribution. i particularly liked your paragraph beginning with "Unfortunately for the vaunted ambitions ..." reminded me of max weber!
sally, once again, thank you for astroworld!
Sally and Larry:
Both of your articles are wonderful. I love this site.
Question: Isn't it strange that Rice, Rumsfeld and Powell are all laying low? Have they become scapegoats/liabilities?
Mike, believe me, they have trashed the country. The coffers are empty.
I actually once had lunch with Rumsfield. It was at a small company function introducing him as our newly named chairman. This was many years ago. Within three months of that meeting I left my lucrative and promising career. My family and co-workers thought I had lost my mind. To this day I don't know what made me leave so suddenly. It had alway been so odd to me but no so much anymore.
Welcome Larry! Fantastic article...
Another gaffe from the shrub:
Campaigning in Virginia (must not be red anymore!) Bush criticized Kerry's plan to eliminate the tax cuts for those making more than $200,000 a year, saying that the "the rich in America happen to be the small business owners" who put people to work.
Bush also said high taxes on the rich are a failed strategy because "the really rich people figure out how to dodge taxes anyway."
Nah, he didn't say that? Yep!
http://www.dailypress.com/news/local/virginia/dp-va--bushvisit0809aug09,0,6920595.story?coll=dp-headlines-virginia
smiles, blue cheer, vox populi
http://zogby.com/
bush job performance as of 7/29:
negative: 56%
positive: 46%
two further positive points. (1) the national polls are skewed since texas is a big a$$ state and is bush country to the tune of about 60-30%; (2) the gallup poll that showed no election bounce was 2/3rd's before kerry's speech and 1/3rd after. the 1/3rd after sample showed kerry with a 10% bounce. gee, they left this out.
p.s. laurie, can you find me the link or source of the georgia poll? there are a few states (GA, SC)which indicate the whole deal; if bush goes down in either, it is assumed, by this model, that he's done as in stick a fork in him. they may trend early or late but the GA numbers are tres interessant!
Mike, I was in Georgia a few weeks ago and I heard from friends there that Kerry & Bush were within 5 percentage points. Could have been wishful thinking on their part. I apologize for not checking before I posted concerning GA above.
Most polls I see for GA have the Shrub up by 11 or 12 percentage points.

Well written and informative, Larry! Hope to read more in the coming weeks. I cannot shake the feeling that there will be no election. Or, if there is one, a terrible disruption. That is not to say that our future is doomed. Rather, it may just be necessary to effect the changes needed to make us a more humane and humble society.
Dreamed recently that the stock market crashed. I would be curious to know how a potential monetary crisis figures into the coming election fiasco (astrologically speaking).

"FEAR" is being promoted bigtime by this administration...
http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=676&ncid=676&e=1&u=/usatoday/20040809/ts_usatoday/adcampaignurgesemployersfamiliestoplanforemergency
"FEAR" is the only thing the present administration has going for it. Doesn't that speak volumes for what is going on?
bhakti (last thread?) reminds us we don't need a 'new' Big Daddy... we don't need one at all...
How anyone who lived through the events of 9/11 could rationalize that 'this' administration is keeping us safe is beyond my comprehension! And the invasion and occupation of Iraq has created more 'terrorists' not made us safer.
So how the heck is it that Dubya in strong in the polls on this question? Is it because people are simply too frightened to think? Well the Bushites think so... and they keep that 'fear' factor going... this seems to be the premise underlying all of Michael Moore's documentaries... He maintains White people are frightened... of Black people... of people of color... 'divide and conquer' is the unspoken meme of Karl Rove... he has made psych ops his personal god...
Psychological operations have maximum effect with people who:
have little education
accept information uncritically
benefit from the proposed change
want to believe the propaganda
do not wish to understand their own motivations
The Institute for Propaganda Analysis (IPA) was created in 1937 to alert the public to political propaganda. The IPA identified seven basic propaganda tricks: Name-Calling, Glittering Generalities, Transfers, Testimonials, Plain Folks, Card Stacking, and Band Wagon. According to Combs and Nimmo (1993), "these seven devices have been repeated so frequently in lectures, articles and textbooks ever since that they have become virtually synonymous with the practice and analysis of propaganda in all its aspects."
In The Fine Art of Propaganda, the IPA stated that "It is essential in a democratic society that young people and adults learn how to think, learn how to make up their minds. They must learn how to think independently, and they must learn how to think together. They must come to conclusions, but at the same time they must recognize the right of other men to come to opposite conclusions. So far as individuals are concerned, the art of democracy is the art of thinking and discussing independently together."
http://www.propagandacritic.com/articles/intro.ipa.html
---------------------
These days we spend alot of time talking about people 'waking up' to what is happening in this country. The question arises as to whether or not a democracy can be properly nurtured and sustained without a sufficient number of 'thinking' people... folks who question the mutterings of the 'idiot box' --- We don't want them to simply 'wake up' --- we want them to start thinking... a task many have given up to others.
I am intrigued by the statement above: "So far as individuals are concerned, the art of democracy is the art of thinking and discussing independently together."
I can recall those days in politics when political adversaries could discuss policies and issues and the American people would watch and make up their own mind. They seem to be gone... (the people and the days)... perhaps they were a 'momentary aberration'? Have the transiting outer planets exposed a dying democracy?
Laurie poses a question upthread about possibility of electors voting against their electorate. Larry's excellent article asks about possible martial law. Many other questions about possible scenarios arise --- all generated by this climate of fear we live in...
Are we dead, people? Will we simply accept whatever these fascists dish out, pull the covers over our heads? I don't think so!
The planets pose possibility for various scenarios but the people can and indeed must make choices. We begin with out thought processes... and move on to take action through letters to powers that be, and as bhakti has suggested so many times, boycotts of their commercial products. There's another big tool... turn Fox and CNN off! the major networks too! Jim Lehrer too! Fear Factor and all those other trashy, vacuous, mind-altering 'programs'... get with the real program! Send Dubya clearing brush in Crawford... permanently! Send the Neocons back to the rocks they came out from under! Send progressives to Washington... Send a message people!
Visualize BLUE spreading all across the country... 'clap' ... 'clap'... 'clap'
Namaste
The young emperor has appointed Porter Goss (Florida Republican) as head of the CIA. I was not near a clock, but I do know it was about 8:30 am EDT, Washinton DC. This appointment will have to be approved by the Republican Congress, and I do believe the Senate.
Jo, thanks for watching and listening.
I have a psychological theory based upon my own family. My sister the SCarolina Bush lover always felt intellectually inferior. Truly she's bright and finally got herself a career as a nurse in her 40's after raising two kids. BRAVO. But up til then she relied on her looks (her man ,other men) to solve problems and would always say things like the 'NY intellectuals' or 'you think Southerners are not as smart as Northerners'. I really believe Bush (etc) plays into this intellectual inferiority and makes it seem that it's ok to not think critically. He also promotes image over brains. What it looks like. (Which personally I don''t get since he is gross).
I love the internet. We can all have a dialogue (some of us that is who are not brain dead preachers) and I have no idea of your race, gender, gender orientation, etc. It immediately erases the visual and gets to the heart of the matters. Bushco will always divide.
Ya know, when you are so filled with lack of self esteem things get projected.
Isn't it interesting that Rush projects his denial of his own addiction onto the rock stars. Isn't is fascinating (nauseating really ) that Bushco projects its lack of military experience onto Kerry. These people are so easily transparent. Go to any Alanon meeting and you can see through their denial easily. But without critical thinking the denial becomes facts.
ps Welcome Larry Shea! Thanks for a great article.
Transits have both positive and negative energy.
Saturn opposite my sun made me dig my heels in and work harder and now I feel more established in my career. GW does not know from hard work, so watch out.
For those interested Porter Goss was born on Nov. 26, 1938 in New Haven, CT (GWB's birthplace) Worked at the CIA from 1960 to 1972, went into business in Florida in 1974 and started moving up politically.
Hmmmmmm. Connections. Empire building?
Welcome Larry, what a thoughtful and informative article!.
On a sidebar, what is going on with Kerry. He recently said to paraphrase: Looking back and even knowing that there were no WMD, I would still have gone to war with Iraq. I simply would have done a better job. What is he thinking? Now, everyone I know who is reluctantly supporting Kerry is scratching their heads and feeling bewildered and betreyed. We didn't expect him to be a saviour but he sounds like at his core he's just as destructive as Shrub. Can someone please shed some light on this? Thx.
I thought I heard him saying that he would still have given the authority to the President if he were in Office. He thought the authority was appropriate, but that Bush used it the wrong way. I think he keeps saying Iraq needed to be dealt with, but he would have gone in with allies.
Kerry voted for the authorization to go to war with Iraq AS A LAST RESORT and he is saying that he would do the same now. He has always maintained that Bush rushed to war without exhausting every other avenue.

SWIFT BOAT VETERANS FOR "TRUTH" v. THE TRUTH
Last updated 8/9/04
Many media outlets have been providing a relatively easy outlet for the so-called "Swift Boat Veterans for Truth" (SBV for short; more appropriately described as the Swift Boat Veterans Who Have a Problem With The Truth or as Swift Boat Veteran Flip-Floppers for Bush or as Smear Boat Veterans for Bush). Since the media continues to parade these folks (fondly and appropriately described by Hesiod as "Swift Boat Liars for Bush") before viewers, often without critically examining their egregious charges against Senator John Kerry (some media outlets are far worse than others on this), I wanted to get a clear picture for myself on what is being said and what is really the truth. What emerges is simply the fact that this is the beginning of Part II of The Hunting of the President.
I've tried to group SBV's and their members' claims by topic - to the extent possible. I'm not covering every single claim by every single member of SBV - that is far too much work given the difficulty of responding to reams of fabrications. However, most of the key claims are addressed here.

Update: Man Kerry Rescured Calls Swift Boat Ad False: Gives Vivid Account of Rescue Under Enemy Fire
08.10.2004
In an Aug. 10 opinion piece in the conservative Wall Street Journal , Jim Rassmann -- the man Kerry rescued to win the Bronze Star -- says the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth ad was "launched by people without decency" who are "lying" and "should hang their heads in shame."
We have updated our article to include Rassmann's vivid account of his rescue. It flatly contradicts the Kerry accusers and says Kerry was under fire, and wounded by the blast that threw Rassmann into the water:
Rassmann said that after the first explosion that disabled PCF-3:
Rassmann: Machine-gun fire erupted from both banks of the river and a second explosion followed moments later. The second blast blew me off John's swift boat, PCF-94, throwing me into the river. Fearing that the other boats would run me over, I swam to the bottom of the river and stayed there as long as I could hold my breath.
When I surfaced, all the swift boats had left, and I was alone taking fire from both banks. To avoid the incoming fire I repeatedly swam under water as long as I could hold my breath, attempting to make it to the north bank of the river. I thought I would die right there. The odds were against me avoiding the incoming fire and, even if I made it out of the river, I thought I thought I'd be captured and executed. Kerry must have seen me in the water and directed his driver, Del Sandusky, to turn the boat around. Kerry's boat ran up to me in the water, bow on, and I was able to climb up a cargo net to the lip of the deck. But, because I was nearly upside down, I couldn't make it over the edge of the deck. This left me hanging out in the open, a perfect target. John, already wounded by the explosion that threw me off his boat, came out onto the bow, exposing himself to the fire directed at us from the jungle, and pulled me aboard.
Rassmann said he recommended Kerry for the Silver Star for that action, and learned only later that the Bronze Star had been awarded instead. "To this day I still believe he deserved the Silver Star for his courage," he wrote. Rassmann described himself as a retired lieutenant with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. "I am a Republican, and for more than 30 years I have largely voted for Republicans," Rassmann said. But he said Kerry "will be a great commander in chief."
"This smear campaign has been launched by people without decency," Rassmann said. "Their new charges are false; their stories are fabricated, made up by people who did not serve with Kerry in Vietnam."

Re Porter Goss, he was involved in Iran/Contra and is a Bush family insider. Owes all his loyalty to the Bush family. I've read that he was implicated in CIA drug smuggling/money laundering in Florida during the first Bush presidency.
* [bushaholic] Vs Kerry - Questions About Military Service Revisited http://www.democraticunderground.com/articles/04/08/10_military.html
Classic transference/projection. Bushadruggie apparently told the Air Force what he was & was not going to do... this passes as its "military career." Then, bushaholic et al accuse President Kerry of... well, ordering the Navy to award hisself 3 different medals for valor at 3 different times when Kerry "didn't deserve 'em." The entire Navy was incredibly stupid/disorientated, according to the bushaholics. Otoh, the Air Force apparently had to bend over for bushadruggie's "Daddie in the High Place." So from bushaAWOL's perspective, the story they've created against President Kerry is all very simple, logical & self-evident.
However, the more bushaholics attack President Kerry's military career, the more it brings up its Shadow... Kerry had an honorable military career; bushaDeserter had the opposite. WhaddaHOOT!!
In the fantastic article by Larry Shea, he mentioned a recording of Nixon in 1972 which indicated he had stalled the war in Vietnam (in order to prop up the So. Vietnamese government) until after the election to enhance his chances of reelection.
In this article on Democracy Now, the question is raised whether the current misadministration has leaked information on the Pakistani double agent to derail the 'war on terror'. I think this is a very good question.
Obviously, the quicker the so-called evil doers are caught the less mileage these bushites can get out of waving the terraist flag to keep everyone jittery and obedient.
http://www.democracynow.org/article.pl?sid=04/08/10/149253
Yea... SOME people jittery & obedient. I can't think of any greater waste of time, Life Force, or the soul's need for fun. ;O)
Sally I see Colorado is holding its Primary today. Any thoughts on it's outcome ? Colorado I hear is in play for the Democrats come this Fall. What think ye?
For senate on the Republicans side, Peter Coors and Bob Scheffer, Coors is decidely the better candidate and I thought seriously of changing my registeration to Republican so I could vote for Coors. Bob Scheffer is to the right of Ashcroft and a very dangerous man, he is supported by the right wing stronghold in Colorado Springs, Peter Coors can't hold a candle to even GWB when it comes to the right, so he would be a better choice if push comes to shove.
Dems: Mike Miles (businessman and very much for the little guy) Ken Salazar (a very popular Attorney General here in Colorado, has worked well on both sides of the aisle.) Mike Miles is well liked but a newcomer, don't really know a whole lot about him.
Yes, I do think Colorado could be in play in this election and might swing left, Bill Owens (R Gov.) is losing popularity fast and the majority of Republicans in this state (except for Colorado Springs area) are moderate, and they are not happy with this war.

Al Qaeda plots to influence US elections?
But experts split over who terrorist group wants to 'help' win.
Agence France-Presse reports on Tuesday that Pakistani intelligence officials say they have uncovered evidence which shows Al Qaeda was plotting a series of attacks in order to influence the 2004 US presidential elections.
'The network was looking to strike a major blow ahead of the elections. Al-Qaeda was looking to strike in the United States or its chief allies Great Britain and Pakistan,' said the official, asking to remain anonymous. 'The period before the US presidential elections was very critical,' said the official, who has played a key role in a crackdown against Al-Qaeda in Pakistan over the past month which has netted over 20 suspected operatives.
And Time magazine on Monday quoted a top Homeland Security official as saying that intelligence agencies have "... a number of times picked up information that Al Qaeda wants to attack us before the election, and some of the communications attribute that desire to Osama Bin Laden.

On one of these you can click on the state and see the percentage for Kerry and the percentage for Bush, though I couldn't tell where they get the numbers (maybe that info is on the site and I just overlooked it.)
Anyhow, I clicked on Georgia and it said 52% for Bush and 41% for Kerry. I do know that back in Oct. 2002 Georgia was 64% for Kerry, so in less than 2 years maybe 12% of the Georgia voters have wised up.
Re fear, I like what the astrologers on this site say about changes and changing. All those orbits are turning at different speeeds and the great celestial slot machine will be ringing in a new picture always. The I Ching encourages acceptance of change, too--you can come up with the most propitious hexagram and in it there is the warning that "this is temporary."
The way things have been lately in America the words "this is temporary" are pretty comforting.
In an apparent case of Internet graffiti at an online retailer, the cover of a book critical of John Kerry's war record was altered to appear as if the tract supports the Massachusetts senator. The book cover for the anti-Kerry book "Unfit for Command" was somehow changed Monday on Web bookseller Barnesandnoble.com to read "Fit for Command."
Hmmmm...
A Plame update from WaPo:
Lawyers involved in the case said it appears that Fitzgerald is now armed with a strong and unambiguous court ruling to demand the testimony of two journalists -- syndicated columnist Robert D. Novak, who first disclosed the CIA officer's name, and Washington Post reporter Walter Pincus, who has written that a Post reporter received information about her from a Bush administration official.
Pincus was served with a subpoena yesterday after Hogan's order was unsealed.
One defense lawyer involved in the case said the judge's ruling gives Fitzgerald significant leverage to compel testimony from Novak and Pincus. "This is now open season on these reporters," the lawyer said. The court's ruling establishes unequivocally that "in a grand jury context, reporters don't have a privilege," the lawyer said.
Lucy A. Dalglish, executive director of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, said Hogan's ruling is troubling because it allows prosecutors to make their case by trying force reporters to violate confidentiality commitments, rather than by extracting answers from administration officials.
"You just can't tell me none of the people appearing before the grand jury knows who the leaker was," she said.
As somebody wrote on another blog, the press is suppose to cover the white house NOT cover it up! To Novak, 9-11 changed everything - remember (a**hole).
I'm going to tear myself away from http://www.homestarrunner.com long enough to try and have a coherent thought...
Welcome Larry Shea and thanks to both you and Sally for such an informative and compelling article! Opps! Correction! As you all probably know, what I meant to say in post about poll numbers & Georgia is that in Oct. 2002 Georgia was 64% for Bush and it is now 52% for Bush.

Carol, is his natal Mercury retrograde? The announcement was given during a Merc R. If his natal Merc is retrograde, it can work in his favor, if not, there will be problems.
Congressional intelligence committees' Chairs Porter Goss and Bob Graham, both from Florida, were having breakfast at the time of the 9/11 attack with Muamar Ahmad, head of the Pakistani ISI intelligence service, a man close to bin Laden who had sent $100,000 to Mohammed Atta, the alleged mastermind of 9/11 in August of that year.
Hmmmmmmm... she says... good choice to become Head of the CIA? Don't think so... No one has asked about this. Or about GHWB meeting with Carlyle Group that same day... or about Dubya flying in circles after staring at a goat for 20 mins., then late in the day, landing in Omaha, down the rabbit hole for for a previously scheduled meeting of monied folk with Warren Buffet... Don't mind me... I'll just take my tin foil hat and keep on muttering to myself...

"We at truthout are also concerned that so profound an ally of the Bush administration is poised to take the reins of the CIA while the investigation of the Valerie Plame case is still ongoing. Our readers will recall that Plame was a CIA agent allegedly 'outed' by administration officials in order to silence her husband, Bush critic Ambassador Joseph Wilson. The case is progressing - Patrick Fitzgerald is re-questioning witnesses, members of the media are facing jail time as a federal judge is requiring their testimony before the Grand Jury, and Mr. Bush himself has hired a criminal attorney - and we fear a new Director so closely connected with the administration will hinder this important matter."

Remember Iraq?
--------------
Civilians urged to leave Najaf
By Nicolas Rothwell
11aug04
US troops last night urged Iraqi civilians to leave the combat zones in the Shiite holy city of Najaf, raising speculation of an imminent full-scale offensive against rebel cleric Moqtada al-Sadr and his Medhi Army militia.
Soldiers aboard Humvee military vehicles toured the flashpoint areas of the city, urging the population through loudspeakers to evacuate.
The US move came after Sadr's militia threatened to attack Iraq's oil infrastructure.
As fighting in Najaf and the suburbs of Baghdad continued for a sixth day, and spread south to Basra, production in the southern oilfields was shut down and the world price of crude soared towards $US45 ($62.84) a barrel.
With the security situation deteriorating, Poland, one of the key members of the multinational force seeking to establish peace in Iraq, handed responsibility for the two southern provinces it had been overseeing to the US.
Several blasts were heard near the coalition compound in Baghdad but no casualties were reported.
A critical time for the US-led coalition is at hand, with unrest spreading again to the far south of Iraq, where many of the key oil installations are located. British troops, which patrol the region around Basra, were heavily engaged yesterday, with one soldier killed and five wounded in running battles that left several Iraqi militiamen dead.
Attacks on an oil production compound just outside Baghdad, adjacent to the Shiite militia stronghold of Sadr City, also were reported, despite the imposition of a curfew.

Oppose Goss as CIA Cheif
To:
Rep. Rush Holt
June 25, 2004
Please oppose Porter Goss as CIA Cheif. Goss didn't even think the Valerie Plame affair merited an investigation. But if you gave him "a blue dress and some dna" then he would have had an investigation. I guess blow jobs are more a threat to national secutiry than outing an undercover CIA agent. This man CANNOT be allowed to run the CIA. See below. Use it against him:
HEADLINE: FLORIDA LAWMAKER SAYS LEAK ISN'T WORTH AN INVESTIGATION
BYLINE: CORY REISS Ledger Washington Bureau
BODY:
WASHINGTON -- Rep. Porter Goss said Thursday that the uproar over allegations that White House officials purposely identified a covert CIA agent appears largely political and doesn't yet merit an investigation by the House Select Committee on Intelligence, which he chairs.
Goss, who was a CIA agent himself from the early 1960s to 1971, said he takes such leaks seriously, but he distinguished between a willful violation of federal law and an inadvertent disclosure.
Goss also said no one from the intelligence agencies has raised the issue with him since syndicated columnist Robert Novak identified the agent in a column July 14.
"I would say there's a much larger dose of partisan politics going on right now than there is worry about national security," said Goss, a Republican from Sanibel. "But I would never take lightly a serious allegation backed up by evidence that there was a willful -- and I emphasize willful, inadvertent is something else -- willful disclosure, and I haven't seen any evidence."

That was really far out, Mike (and Guido)! It's now in "my favorites."
It has been a long strange trip, and I certainly prefer the ones conducted by Owsley than the ones conducted by Nixon-Reagan-Bush-Bush.
Blue cheer to one and all. And crystal blue persuasion, also.
Ain't that the truth, shylurker? I was wondering today if anybody else felt that this was the STRANGEST 4 years of history they've ever lived through? It all seems so surreal and yet it keeps happening---when will the karma wheel turn around and lay these folks low?
A friend of mine suggested I visualize B*sh, Rummy, ChainChainCheney, et al, surrounded by mirrors that reflected their karma back on them...
Oh, and who was surprised that B*sh would appoint Goss to cover his assets on the Plame leak? As expected, Goss is not even in office yet but he's already turned the "spin cycle" up to HIGH.....
mirrors....mirrors....blue light....blue light....crystal blue persuasion(I love that old song.....thanks again shylurker)
Garry, wonderful comments you made, but Mike & Guido are responsible for reawakening the realization that we are the conduits for better times.

It would be nice if she could testify at Goss' senate confirmation hearing, but a federal judge has ruled she can't even tell anyone where she was born or what languages she speaks.

VENEZUELA FLORIDATED
Will The Gang That Fixed Florida Fix the Vote in Caracas this Sunday?
Hugo Chavez drives George Bush crazy. Maybe it's jealousy: Unlike Mr. Bush, Chavez, in Venezuela, won his Presidency by a majority of the vote.
Or maybe it's the oil. Venezuela sits atop a reserve rivaling Iraq's. And Hugo thinks the US and British oil companies that pump the crude ought to pay more than a 16% royalty to his nation for the stuff. Hey, sixteen percent isn't even acceptable as a tip at a New York diner.
Whatever it is, OUR President has decided that THEIR president has to go. This is none too easy given that Chavez is backed by Venezuela's poor; and the US oil industry, joined with local oligarchs, has made sure a vast majority of Venezuelans remain poor.
Therefore, Chavez is expected to win this coming Sunday's recall vote. That is, if the elections are free and fair.
They won't be. Some months ago, a little birdie faxed to me what appeared to be confidential pages from a contract between John Ashcroft's Justice Department and a company called ChoicePoint, Inc., of Atlanta. The deal is part of the War on Terror.
Justice offered up to $67 million of our taxpayer money to ChoicePoint in a no-bid deal for computer profiles with private information on every citizen of half a dozen nations. The choice of citizens to spy on caught my eye. While the September 11 highjackers came from Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Lebanon and the Arab Emirates, ChoicePoint's menu offered records on Venezuelans, Brazilians, Nicaraguans, Mexicans and Argentines. How odd. Had the CIA uncovered a Latin plot to sneak suicide tango dancers across the border with exploding enchiladas?
What do these nations have in common besides a lack of involvement in the September 11 attacks? Coincidentally, each is in the throes of major electoral contests in which the leading candidates -- presidents Lula Ignacio da Silva of Brazil, Nestor Kirschner of Argentina, Mexico City mayor Andres Lopez Obrador and Venezuela's Chavez -- have the nerve to challenge the globalization demands of George Bush.

Isn't it Mercury Retrograde? Wonder if the Porter Goss appointment will really stick?
Went last night to Satire for Sanity ala Air America and missed Janeane's standup but could see her through the window while still on line. Met Randi Rhodes, I said she is an important voice. Very nice, shy. Lynn Samuels was there too and I asked how she could be a call screener for Drudge. She said , 'he's a very nice man'. Say what???? I was still respectful. Randi was lightyears ahead of me, was rolling her eyes to that answer and told me to email her with positive ideas. Got any, blue ones? She reads all the emails.
I think Mercury went retrograde at about 8:30 pm on the 9th.
You are right PatC it did go retrograde on the east coast at just about that time.
Carol, Goss was born in 1938 that changes his chart a bit. Not sure he will be confirmed.
"Not sure he (Porter Goss) will be confirmed." I surely hope not. He will stop the Plame investigation and he will also fire up the "bad" side of the CIA. Hope you've been following the Plame research and discussions over on DU. Extremely troubling stuff involving all the usual old players, but being brought together in considerable detail. Will this never end?
I forgot to mention Washington DC for the announcement. Thanks Sally!
Shylurker, New World Order folks are intermeshed to such a degree, I don't know what peaceloving people are going to do. We'll think of something, one day at a time.
It may be too late, they may already be too entrenched, but if we can take back the Executive in November, and part of the Legislative, we definitely will have a chance. They are getting ready to blow Najaf to smithereens--with our dollars and in our name. With the mid-August tensions looming (as astrologers have told us) . . .! No price is too great for oil, is it?
Do you keep good tabs on your spirit guide?

Here's my very calculated prediction the shrub is
trying to pull a nasty stunt on the polli(is it
the citizens) here - the oil slick thief is ready
to dump the useless cheny and is going to pick
McCain as his running mate in a week( before the
cons'convention in late August). This is like a surprise hoping it will stop his falling off the
cliff on the polls, just watch it very carefully as
this unfolds.
They're always trying to scare us you-know-what-less, Raj, with all these terra alerts and threats. What do you see along those lines in our collective future? Many thanks!
Pulling this stunt-August surprise- picking Mccain
skylurker, will really jolt the polls at least a
few % points in favor of the oil slick thief;also
will force upon Kerry for a brand new stratgy because it will offset the veteran edge Kerry has now, since mccain is a veteran himself;besides, mccain being a moderate can sway independents and
moderate voters to their side. This could be a reason mccain did not want to accept Kerry's overtures earlier(since mccain knew it was a possibility) and everyone knows mccain has ambitions for himself to occupy WH. By getting on
the ticket, mccain doesn't have to wait too long for running in 2008(whether they win in 2004 or not)-it will give him a very big head start for 2008 repug nomination etc. So all these arguments
point towards this nasty throwing sand over people
eyes.Also where's cheny-he is not campaigning;he
can always drop off conveniently saying his heart
has worsened because of all his bad intentions and
habits!
Many thanks, Raj. Excellent points, too. I've always wondered how many heart surgeries Cheney has had during his WH occupancy.
Of course, that presupposes he even has one.
Apparently, they've called off the assault on Najaf--temporarily. Whatever that means.
What, then, does McCain's chart, current and future transits portend, anyhow? That picture of him and Smirky hugging recently was unnerving.
McCain is the ultimate Phillipe Floppe if he runs as VP. All his pouty lipped, patronizing, rationalizing, sitting on both sides of the fence rationale and deameanor is incredibly phony to me. Didn't Bush slander McCain and wife in 2000 with a false story about their adopted child? Does this person have an ounce of self respect left? Hope this does not happen.
I think Cheney runs everything, he's Darth Vader.
Raj, I think you may be on to something. I ran up a comp chart on Bush/McCain for DC and the Asc/Dsc axis is 8 deg Virgo/8 deg Pisces, which is very close to the point of Mercury station. Uranus is practically on the Desc, so it makes one wonder. The Dub was kissing on him at the most recent speech.
Being Saturnian, I've been praying that Saturn would get the Dub. Hell, it's gotten me all my life, so why not him? I know, karmic choices, whatever.........anyhow, thanx Larry and thank you Sally for bringing the article to us.
And thanx to Garry for the best viz/med image. I was using gravity, but mirrors, I like that better.
I respectfully disagree, Raj. It is true that from an objective viewpoint bringing in McCain as VP candidate would be a good tactic--but theRepugs ain't objective. Also, right now McCain's support of Bush is a favor. If he were VP candidate, McCain's support would be mandatory. McCain enjoys his quasi maverick status too much to give it up IMHO. Also, while a large part of the population thinks Cheney is "barking mad" and "Darth Vader" as Maureen Dowd said on the Daily Show last night, the Repugs still haven't a clue. Lastly, look at Cheney's transits for the evening of Sept 2, the nomination night of the GOP convention. Cheney has both T Sun and T Venus in his lst house. T Jupiter is near his ascendent opposite T Mars on his descendent and both squaring his natal Pluto in 4th House Leo. Sounds to me like the band is striking up the Darth Vader theme from Star Wars, and Cheney will be happily in the spotlight, dark cloak and all.
McCain's chart is on AstroDataBank. I'm barely semi-literate when it comes to astrology, but I found it interesting that his Pluto is in Cancer in 10th house in sharp opposition to his moon. (Did I read that correctly?) Anyhow, Saturn will be playing a cat-and-mouse game with that opposition over the next year.
And tr Pluto will form a T-square with his Saturn-Venus opposition. Brrrrr.
Uh,oh, hold that last comment. I just noticed that I entered the wrong transit date on Cheney's chart. Be right back.
The McCain/Bush chart shows a sun/pluto conj in leo in the 11th cusping the 12th. I don't like that at all. The Kerry/Edwards chart shows Sun in 12th cusping the 1st, sextile to Jupiter.
Moon in Bush/McCain chart at 6 Sag is square the 7deg Venus/6 deg merc on the Asc. You have the trans mars hitting rx merc opp trans uranus on those points coming up. Does that show an upcoming partnership or breakup? I don't know. Seems very unstable to me.
Shade, I agree with you that Saturn can give hell,
but per vedic astrology, depending on his placement in the chart, whether he is exalted, if he gets aspects from benfics like Jupiter and so
on, for some people, Saturn can be of extreme help
to elevate them to their peaks. So it is possible
and I do hope it is not for the oil slick thief.I know of a person, whose Saturn period(dasa) brought him more kudos, money etc. than the preceding Jupiter dasa!
Regarding the speculation that Bush may get McCain on the ticket, it would be interesting if Kerry were to resurrect the hateful things the Bush Campaign said about McCain's military service during the 2000 Election. Be fascinating to see how Bush responds to his own words (or his Party's words) about his new running mate.
OK, just looked at true transits for night of Sept. 2. Wish I knew Vedic astrology, but even my knowledge of Western astrology is pretty much limited to the action of transits and also the solar return. Anyhow, on that night Cheney will have tSun tMars, and tJupiter in his lst house. tUranus is right on his descendent, which is kind of interesting. tVenus and tSaturn pretty close together in his 11th house. Since his 10th house ruler is Venus this doesn't look like being dumped to me.
Forgot to add that Evangeline Adams said "Saturn never hurts an Aquarius very much." Cheney is Aquarius.
Saturn may not hurt Aquarius(I don't know if it is
never!) is because, Saturn owns Zodiac house Aquarius and Capricorn.People who have Saturn in their Libra, also have less to fear from Saturn
since Saturn is exalted in Libra(still all these
have to be analyzed with all other planets' placements in various houses, aspects and so on)
Bush/Cheney comp chart has Sun in Aries, 27 deg opp mars in libra, 28 deg, squaring Jupiter, at 27 deg Cancer. Trans Saturn will be on that comp Jupiter on election day (in the 12th house). It will be Dub's Saturn return as well, natally.
This T-square falls in the 9th/3rd and 12th houses respectively. Foriegn wars, media control or teflon magic, I am not sure what it is, plus all the 12th house secrecy and god i hope self undoing.................without dragging the whole country down with them. I am going back to the mirrors imagery.
Yes, and speaking as an Aquarius I find that perhaps the hardest thing to bear about him. I thought we Aquariuses were supposed to be concerned with the good of humanity? Or is his the ultimate negative expression of the sign?
(sigh)
I'd really like to apologize for his behavior on behalf of all of us Aquariuses--we're not all that bad! :) Take me for instance, born at 1:15 pm on 1/24/1963 CST in Jackson TN, at the JMC General Hospital....
mirrors....mirrors....mirrors....blue light....crystal blue persuasion....
This is very worrisome, and one more BIG reason Bush must not regain Office. The neocons have openly stated they intend to rewrite history. They think it's good for all the "sheep".

“IRAQ ENDED NUCLEAR AIMS IN 1991”
The head of Iraq's nuclear programme under Saddam Hussein has said Iraq destroyed its nuclear weapons programme in 1991 and never restarted it. There was no capability - there was no chemical or biological or any of what are called weapons of mass destruction. Mr. Jafar also says the British government's assertion that Iraq tried to purchase uranium from Niger is false.

Evidence Mounts That Bush Officials Are Leaking Old CIA Files to Impact Election
Leaks Disrupt Allied Surveillance Operations Against Al-Qaeda
Cells Had Been Detected Years Ago by US, UK and Pakistan
British MI5 Issues Protest
Confirms TNR Pre-Election "Surprise" Scenario
British intelligence has complained that members of the Al-Qaeda cells that were the target of high profile arrests earlier this week had been the subject of ongoing surveillance. White House-orchestrated publicity about a CIA-initiated arrest of a suspect in Pakistan forced a premature round up of suspects in Britain, compromising a long-term counterterrorism operation in the UK.
Bush Administration figures claim that the arrests have stopped a plot they say was in the works to disrupt the U.S. elections in November. Such an attack would now have to be in the latter stages of preparation, with personnel and equipment in place inside the U.S. and planning nearly completed. Facts instead point to a well-timed roundup of figures long ago identified in old counterintelligence sting operations. Unlike the months preceding 9/11, this time there is no solid, multi-source evidence warning of an imminent attack.
In his weekly radio address Saturday, President Bush all but admitted that the US intelligence has long known details about the alleged plot. Bush said,
"Information from arrests in Pakistan, taken together with information gathered by the U.S. intelligence community, indicated that al-Qaida has cased financial targets in New York, New Jersey and Washington, D.C . . . This information was buttressed by other information we already had." [See, http://www.msnbc.msn.com/ID/5626850]

Atrios has the goods...or rather, Michael Moore is making public a whole lot of footage with Porter Goss.

War? What war?
Until the recent flare-up in Najaf, Iraq had faded from the front pages -- despite continued carnage and chaos. Team Bush couldn't be happier
Despite arriving sooner than expected and catching much of the American press off guard, the June 28 hand-over of sovereignty in Iraq was trumpeted as a momentous event. That night CNN devoted its entire prime-time lineup to analyzing the brief, 15-minute ceremony in Baghdad. Fox News cheered it as "a day that will go down in history." Newspapers the next morning were clogged with reports from Iraq and speculation about what the transfer of political power would mean for the rebuilding of Iraq, as well as for the 140,000 U.S. troops serving there.
The hand-over, though, has done very little to change things for the better in Iraq. In the past six weeks, the country has been gripped in escalating violence, forcing some coalition countries and private contractors to flee for safety. Kidnappings by insurgents have multiplied, as have assassinations, while electricity still remains in short supply. Iraq's national conference -- critical to the eventual implementation of free elections -- has been postponed, and U.S. soldiers continue to die.
"On June 28, my feeling was nothing was going to change because of the hand-over," says Steven Cook, a fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. "There were still going to be car bombings and U.S. soldiers being killed, and that's exactly what's happened. Nothing has changed."
But one thing did change: U.S. press coverage of Iraq. The hand-over marked a turning point in the level and intensity of media interest, which sharply decreased, particularly on the 24-hour cable news channels. "Clearly the volume in press coverage has gone way down," says Cook. "'Sleepy' is a good word to describe it. The coverage doesn't compare with anything we'd seen during the previous 12 months from Iraq. The drop-off has been noticeable."
"From the very beginning this has been an administration that wanted to hide the toll of the war -- and the media have been absolutely complicit in that," says Nancy Lessin, co-founder of the antiwar group Military Families Speak Out. Lessin's stepson, a Marine, served in Iraq during the spring of 2003. "In April of this year, violence in Iraq was up and it was hard to keep the war off the front pages. But as soon as possible the pictures changed. Since June 28, [the war has] been off the front pages again."

I don't watch teevee or read newpapers... even so, I can tell the Excruciating Barf Factor (rather than a Sanity Factor) has gone up several decibels. Speaking of Goss, what I see is merely another white-haired pink-supremacist ethically-challenged guy (they all look alike). One would think that the whole of USian population was white-haired pink-supremacist guys when it's only 39%... two census ago. It has decreased since then. I wonder what planetary symbol might rep white-haired pink-supremacist ethically-challenged boyz. ;O)
Joanna, yup EBF factor is high. Woke up to Cheney implying Kerry was a whimp, wussive, effeminate. With a wife like Teresa I'd say Cheney is smokin somethin' . Gods the repugs are pathetic.
* Director MMoore Quotes Goss on Lack of CIA Credentials
US Congressman Porter Goss, [bushadruggie]'s nominee for CIA director, cld be his own worst enemy when it comes to making the case that he deserves to lead the US intelligence agency. "I cldn't get a job with CIA today. I am not qualified," the FL repub told documentary-maker Michael Moore's production company during the filming of the anti-bush movie "Fahrenheit 9/11."
A day after bush picked Goss for the top US spy job, Moore Wed released an excerpt from a 3/3 interview in which the 65 y/o former Hse of Rep intelligence chief recounts his lack of qualifications for employment as a modern CIA staffer... <a href="http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/nm/20040812/pl_nm/bush_cia_moore_dc_2
(sigh... the drum tap-tap-taps on the DarkSide cancerian bushapuree's sheer lunacy)
Joanna, geeze how embarassing is that! Thanks!
"Yea, tho we walk thru the Shadow of...," Morgana... & the mega-narcissistic "Big Daddy" repubs use--almost exclusively--a damaged ego defense mechanism: transference/projection. As they hiss like Gollum, they are actually telling us all about what they have done, all about what they are doing now, & all about what they plan to do in the future. The illusion is that what they "see" is about all the rest of US & the World... tho we may occasionally act as good "hooks." Sadly-sad, ain't it? ;O)
With Cheney blasting Kerry this morning I'm waiting to hear what John Edwards has to say.
Note derisive chuckles, sounds like the bunch from the lower end of the gene pool had a laugh.
Cheney blasts Kerry
Drawing derisive chuckles from the crowd, Vice President Dick Cheney Thursday blasted Sen. John Kerry for a remark the Democratic presidential candidate made last week about fighting a "more sensitive war on terror" if elected.
http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/
Which reminds me, saw Maureen Dowd on the Daily Show (rerun for us west coasters at 7pm the following night), anyway John Stewart call Cheney a douche bag of liberty. I loved it.
His main audience is 18 - 24, but all the 50 somethings I know also watch it.
Morgana,
Just so you know, the latest poll numbers shows Kerry leading Bush in the 18-24 (or is that 18-29?) age group 51% to 43% or something like that. If the 50 somethings you know watch it, who knows what THOSE poll numbers could be?!?! :-)
* The Ghosts of War
...There are vets [& chickenshits] of all conflicts, who fall in love with the terrible sweet beauty of war. Men who polish their armor long after the parades have faded. Their glory is not in duty, honor, & country; but in the carnival mirrors of their own warped reflections. These are vets who march with swagger & blaring brass, like small boys struggling to be seen & heard. ...
...The WH cld stop this Swift Boat slander, but won't. [bushadruggie] needs the venomous attacks on John Kerry to distract the media & public from the failures of his [unelected] leadership, & from the growing [bloody] stench of Iraq. ...
...This GOP-funded anti-Kerry vets grp is getting lots of free publicity by major networks & cable shows, & lots of discussion about "truth" & "facts" & all the focus-grp tested words. This is a grp that prefers to tongue-polish the buttons of a war dodger & champagne Natl Guard frat boy in an effort to restore their battle honor by tarnishing a fellow vet. ... con't http://www.truthout.org/docs_04/081304X.shtml
Just terrific, wow, thanks sally for posting Larry Shea's insights.
bingo...John Edwards response to Cheney
Edwards, returning to the campaign after a three-day break, took issue with Cheney's comments and his target — Democratic presidential nominee Kerry, a decorated Vietnam War veteran.
"He took that word and distorted and tried to use it to argue John Kerry will not keep the American people safe," Edwards said. "He's talking about a man who still carries shrapnel in his body. He's talking about a man who spilled his blood for the United States of America."
