Terrorism, the Olympics, and 9/11
On that fateful day in early September 2001, Americans received a searing wound, a brand in the national psyche that would reshape priorities, policies, and perceptions for years to come. Our naďve bubble of security had been breached, and we spent the succeeding days and months anxiously anticipating a Second Act. The Bush administration’s response was simple and direct: attack the perpetrators, catch them, and “bring them to justice.” Initially, this met a deep, visceral need for revenge, and seemed, as well, an important step toward future security. The War in Afghanistan, aimed at the terrorists and their sponsors, enjoyed universal support. But the administration’s drumbeat soon became monotonous. Anyone who wanted to explore how this could have happened was deemed a traitor and silenced. The spreading mythology was that we were victims of a horrible malignant force, and our sole purpose was to destroy this global evil. How such an event could have bypassed our billion-dollar intelligence network and why we had been attacked in the first place were, for a long time, not part of the national discussion. After much resistance and continual stonewalling from the Bush administration, the 9/11 Commission was finally formed and has been able to explore, to some degree, the enormous intelligence failure that led to this massive terrorist attack on American soil. But the question of why it happened in the first place has been largely glossed over by phrases such as: “They hate our freedom.” This administration clings to the image of a battle against evil and refuses to acknowledge that, however heinous the acts of terrorism, the perpetrators are a part of our collective human family. In fact, the entire story of the events leading up to 9/11 and the subsequent almost three years would surely be told in an entirely different way from the perspective of those who committed and planned that day and the numerous acts of terrorism which have followed. In the Biblical tale of David and Goliath, a peaceful shepherd vanquishes the most powerful warrior of a militarily superior nation that had been invading his people’s homeland. Imbued with a profound trust that God would help him, David defeats the giant Goliath with a simple sling and a stone. Although Goliath’s tribesmen, the Philistines, are known for their advanced weaponry and military skill, they flee in panic after the defeat of their hero. In much the same way, those who today commit acts of terrorism against the United States and its Western allies, see themselves as allied with their own God and fighting a militarily superior force of invaders. These terrorists remember the victory of Arab fighters over the superpower Soviet Union in Afghanistan in the 1980’s and hope for another victory over another Goliath, America, using only their homemade bombs and empowered by a willingness to give their lives. In their own minds, ignoring the raw brutality of the means taken to pursue their chosen ends, they see themselves in a heroic role similar to that of the Biblical David who thwarted invaders to his own land. From the vantagepoint of the West, however, a very different tale might be used to describe the inner essence of this War on Terrorism. Perhaps something along the lines of the Beowulf myth would be seen as more appropriate. In this story, the hero Beowulf has two significant traits: his incredible strength and his willingness to use it to benefit others. After many experiences of killing hideous beasts and foul creatures, Beowulf confronts and kills the monster Grendel, who has been terrorizing the Danes for twelve years. He then kills Grendel’s grotesque mother, who seeks revenge for the death of her son. Here the enemy is purely evil and not human. The hero is noble and powerful and eventually prevails, celebrated by the cult of the warrior in which he lives. The War on Terrorism, as presented by the Bush administration to the American people, bears much resemblance to this tale. The enemy is evil and barely human, and America is the strong and noble force that will eventually prevail. The two sides in this great drama have two entirely different understandings of what the whole story is about. This same pattern of disconnected realities is often found in a dysfunctional married couple. Each blames the other and sees him or herself as the victim. Ideally, the marital therapist will facilitate a dialogue between the two and make sure each really understands the other’s perspective. In addition, each spouse needs to begin to understand how his or her own actions have contributed to the discord. By abandoning the victim role and taking responsibility for being part of the problem, a whole world of possible change and empowerment opens up. The alternative is to remain in what is known as the Drama Triangle, the three corners of which consist of the archetypal three roles: Victim, Persecutor, and Rescuer. When functioning in the reality of the Triangle, people move from one role to the other, often stuck on the merry-go-round indefinitely. The only solution is to get off the Triangle by accepting responsibility and being honest about motives. Thus, the Victim needs to acknowledge and transform his or her own contributory actions in the conflict; the Rescuer needs to be honest about his or her real investment in keeping the rescued victim dependent; and the Persecutor needs to let go of his righteous anger and accept responsibility for the impact of his or her actions. In our War on Terror and our War in Iraq we are very much stuck in the Drama Triangle. In our “rescuing” of the Iraqis from Saddam and the Afghani women from the Taliban, we have not admitted our ulterior and self-serving motives. In our victimhood on 9/11 and in subsequent terrorism, we have not admitted how our military bases in the Middle East, our support of repressive regimes, and our subsequent military action in Iraq have fueled the hatred against us that has led to increasing attacks. And in our stoking the flames of our self-righteous anger against terrorism, we have failed to see how our own deeds have been igniting the fires that rage against us. Until we can be honest about our impact on the situation and take responsibility for changing, we will not move toward a real resolution of this worldwide conflict. Initially, after 9/11, it was considered treason to even speak of American fault in the larger picture of events. Currently, there are some cracks in this façade, most notably in the recent book published by Anonymous, a CIA agent who specializes in terrorism. In Imperial Hubris: Why the West is Losing the War on Terror, Anonymous suggests that it is not who we are that sparks the rage of the terrorists, as suggested by the Bush administration, but what we do – our occupation of Iraq and Afghanistan, our support of corrupt Muslim regimes, and our uncritical support of Israel. The simple and obvious truth here is that while we cannot change who we are, we can certainly change what we do. We can also strive to understand how our actions have impacted others, most notably, how our foreign policy and oil dependency have impacted reality in the Middle East. And we can work to become increasingly independent from Middle Eastern oil and the contortions it forces on our policies in that part of the world. With enlightened thinking and action, the War on Terror doesn’t have to extend into forever. While we pursue those who want to attack us, we can also siphon the blood out of their persuasive appeal to those who are disempowered and angry at our policies. But we need to get off the drama merry-go-round and reclaim responsibility for having helped to shape the landscape. For finding periods that seem more vulnerable to unexpected violence and disruption, astrology can be a very useful tool. One chart that seems to be particularly relevant to potential terrorist acts is based on the 1998 meeting of Osama bin Laden, Ayman al-Zawahiri, and other jihadists, when they joined forces to create the Islamic World Front for the Struggle against Jews and the Crusaders, now currently known more by the name of bin Laden’s original organization, al Qaida. The indication given is that the meeting took place in the “early morning.” I have estimated the time at 7:30 AM, but this is only conjecture. Based on the early morning time, this chart has a 12th house stellium in Pisces – Sun, Jupiter, Mercury, and South Node - square to Pluto. This suggests intensity and fanaticism (Pluto) tied to the group’s goals (Sun), thinking (Mercury), and its religious/philosophical understanding of the world (Jupiter). The likely 12th house preponderance adds an element of total abnegation of self and a feeling of sacrifice to an ideal or belief system that can be somewhat disconnected from normal reality. Moreover, the likely first house Mars placement suggests a very forceful and aggressive manifestation of the group’s presence into the environment. A definite correlation exists between previous terrorist events and the al Qaida chart. During the bombing of the two American embassies in Africa on August 7, 1998, Pluto had moved to an exact square with al Qaida Mercury (5 Pisces 17) and progressed Sun (4Pisces57), and remained stationary there the entire month. In addition, tertiary progressed Sun was conjunct the natal South Node at 10 Pisces 33. During 9/11, the progressed Moon in this chart was conjunct the South Node, and the progressed Sun, at 8 Pisces03, was exactly square the progressed Pluto, and only a couple of minutes past the natal Pluto. This latter aspect suggests months of an intense build-up of energy and secret machinations that culminated when the progression was exact in September 2001. The Madrid train bombing of March 12, 2004, had the transiting Sun at 21 Pisces square to transiting Pluto, with the Sun conjunct the al Qaida Mars at 22 Pisces. It is not surprising that this al Qaida chart shows tremendous activity during the 2004 and 2005 period. From March through early September 2004, Uranus is conjunct the Sun/Jupiter/Mercury stellium in the 12th house, bringing audacious, stealthy, and surprising moves from the organization. This particular aspect will be very strongly triggered by an opposition from both Mars and Mercury from August 15 through 19. This is likely to be a very dangerous few days, and I am particularly concerned about the Olympics (discussed below) and Iraq during that time. The 1921 Iraqi chart currently has Uranus conjunct its Descendant, bringing ongoing disruption and volatility through August, with this mid-August period being particularly hazardous due to the Mars/ Mercury transit. Also in 2004, from April through September, the tertiary progressed al Qaida Sun is conjunct the tertiary progressed Mars crossing from 16 to 22 Taurus. In addition, from August 2004 through March 2005, the tertiary progressed Jupiter will be conjunct natal Mars at 22Pisces43. Both of these aspects intensify the militancy of the organization and suggest significant aggression from April 2004 through March 2005. More significantly, they will be triggered by transiting Jupiter from August 8 through 22 2004. They will also be set off by the transiting Mars /Sun conjunction on September 11 through September 15 at 20 to 22 Virgo which falls exactly opposite the al Qaida Mars at 22 Pisces. As for the post-election period, December 2004 through November 2005 will bring transiting Pluto to an exact square with al Qaida natal Mars and Uranus conjunct the natal South Node. These aspects suggest more aggression from the jihadist organization in the coming year. Another chart that bears relevance in determining potential terrorist events is that of Ayman al-Zawahiri, one of the top lieutenants of Al Qaida and likely a mastermind of several of its most dramatic attacks. Zawahiri was born on June 19, 1951, in Cairo, no time given. In his chart we find a natal Mercury/Mars conjunction at 19 and 20 Gemini, respectively, receiving an opposition from transiting Pluto through most of 2004. From June through mid October 2004, Pluto makes a particularly potent station opposing both of these positions. This greatly intensifies Zawahiri’s aggressive and manipulative tendency and affords him the possibility of great power and influence during this time. This will be especially true during the first 10 days of August 2004 when Jupiter will be square to transiting Pluto at 19Virgo/Sagittarius42. It will also be true when the transiting Sun and Mars square Zawahiri’s Mars/Mercury positions from September 9 through September 12. Moreover, from September 7 through September 12, transiting Jupiter will be square Zawahiri’s Sun, suggesting he will be feeling confident, optimistic, and successful. Further confirmation of possibly significant events in August and September comes from the chart for the founding of Islam, given for July 15, 622 in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Mars in this chart is at 19Virgo33. From November 2003 through October 2004, Pluto makes a square to the Islamic Mars, inflaming an explosive rage in the Moslem world, especially directed at the United States, which has its own Mars, also being hit by this transit, at 21 Gemini. Thus, the already strong tension between Islam and the United States, shown by the natal Mars square to Mars, is being enormously intensified in 2004 by the fanatical and ruthless Plutonian energy. In July, August, and early September 2004, Pluto will make its station (19Sagittarius32) exactly square to the Islamic Mars, while the same station is squaring Zawahiri’s Mercury/Mars conjunction as mentioned above. Acting as a major trigger to this inflammatory aspect, Jupiter will be conjunct the Islamic Mars position from July 31 through August 6. This is likely to bring dramatic events to the Islamic world, potentially stirring up both anger and sense of great empowerment. With Zawahiri’s Mercury/Mars conjunction (19 and 20 Gemini) in a very close square to transiting Jupiter, it is likely that his actions and thus al Qaida’s, will be involved in these events. Furthermore, both transiting Mars and transiting Sun will be conjunct the Islamic Mars from September 8 through September 11, also setting off the volatile and aggressive Pluto square to Islamic Mars. But unlike the Zawahiri chart which will have Jupiter aspecting the Sun during September, the Islamic chart will have Saturn making its first crossing of the Islamic world’s Sun at 24 Cancer. This suggests that while Zawahiri is happy about the unfolding of events, the general mood in the Islamic world may not be so contented. Although circumstances seem to reach some kind of a dramatic and perhaps violent catharsis in early August, the mood is likely to shift in September to one of more caution, concern, and sorrow, and remain so for several months. Thus, we have seen that the al Qaida chart, the Zawahiri chart, and the Islam chart all suggest some violent and dramatic events are possible in early and mid-August and from September 8 through September 15 2004. Significant terrorism somewhere in the world with likely profound repercussions is a possibility during these times. The chart for the opening of the Olympic games on August 13, 2004, at 8:45 PM in Athens, unfortunately, suggests one potential arena for this explosive energy. In the Olympic 2004 chart, Uranus, at 5Pisces22 retrograde, is in the first house, 4 degrees from the Ascendant and opposite both Mercury and Mars. On the 16th, the Moon, and on the 17th and 18th, both Mercury and Mars will have moved to an exact opposition of Olympic 2004 Uranus, setting off the potential in this very violent planetary combination. Uranus at this time will also be conjunct the Sun/Jupiter/Mercury conjunction in the al Qaida chart (4 to 5 Pisces). These are very explosive aspects and suggest, even without al Qaida, some kind of sudden, highly disruptive and likely violent event or events between August 16 through 18 that will impact the Olympics. The question of a terrorist event occurring again on the US mainland is always lurking in the minds of Americans, especially when dire warnings are streaming out of the White House, as they have been recently. In looking for such indications, significant evidence should show up in the US chart to suggest both violence and sorrow, as well as an impact on the people or the physical homeland (Moon or Ascendant, respectively). The most significant, explosively violent aspect that has been impacting the US since December 2003 and will continue through November 2004 is Pluto opposing US Mars at 21Gemini23. This aspect can be thus far associated with the intensified battle against the Iraqi insurgency and the growing brutality seen in Iraq, including the beheading of prisoners and the abusive pictures emerging out of the Abu Ghraib prison scandal. It generally indicates an intense battle between the United States and a fierce, ruthless, and determined enemy. When Pluto turns direct at the end of August, its impact will increase once again as it waxes toward its final opposition to US Mars, culminating in late November 2004. As with the other charts mentioned above, the Pluto opposition to US Mars will be triggered by the Mars/Sun conjunction of September 7 through September 15, when both planets will square transiting Pluto and US Mars. I have not been able to find any major planetary activity impacting the US 13 degree Sagittarius Ascendant from July through October 2004 as there was on 9/11/01 when Pluto was crossing that point and Saturn was opposed. This suggests that the US homeland will not be directly attacked during this period. However, there are significant aspects from Saturn to both the US Mercury and the US Moon during the fall months to suggest some unhappy circumstances experienced by the US population. Saturn will be crossing the US Mercury three times between August 29, 2004 and May 2005. The first crossing comes during the first ten days of September. This transit suggests severe strain in the area of investment and hidden resources, savings, and possibly currency. One possible manifestation of the volatility and violence of August and September could be a severe disruption in world oil supplies that then adversely impacts the US economy. With foreign jihadists currently leaving Iraq and returning to Saudi Arabia, the potential for disruption in that country will be increasing considerably. Meanwhile, the Iraqi Kurds are growing restless as they wait for some guaranteed protection for their informal independence and their claim on the oil rich Kirkuk. Disruption in that area in August also looms as a threat with potentially severe repercussions. The significant aspects that suggest a rather dour, oppressive time for some part of the US public are the transit of Saturn stationary quincunx the US Moon, in October and November 2004 and the US progressed Moon square to natal US Saturn from mid-December 2004 through mid-January 2005. In sum, there is a great likelihood of increased violence and potential terrorism in early and mid-August and during the week surrounding September 11, 2004 (9/8 – 9/15/04). These events are likely to significantly impact the US and its people, but may not actually take place on the US mainland. The al Qaida chart for 2005 suggests some continuation of its aggressive tactics in the foreseeable future. But we can, perhaps, find some hope in the chart for the founding of Islam, which suggests that the increased rage towards the West felt in the Arab world in the past year may begin to dissipate in 2005. With the expectation of new leadership in the White House in January 2005, we can look forward to more enlightened and less provocative policies in the Middle East in the coming years. This would go a long way in drying up the proverbial “swamp” and leading to a saner world.

This article is not yet on my own site, Starlight News. I have been having some trouble posting there today. Posted by: on July 12, 2004 03:25 PMNancy, thank you for the article. Will you be doing an analysis of the Kerry-Edwards team any time soon? Would love to hear your insights about their relationship and about their composite and respective natal charts on Election Day. Posted by: gbs on July 12, 2004 04:16 PMthis was an incredibly well crafted piece of work, Nancy as usual. You astound me. One of the things you remark upon is the violence that will impact Americans, albeit on probable foreign soil. I have no doubt that the military is in the process of being transformed,in many ways. I think we will see HUGE losses on their numbers from acts of violence. It's also well known that a crash of the U.S. economy is imminent, and your article sheds some definite light on the "when" of this scenario. Thank you. Posted by: Peg on July 12, 2004 04:31 PMMy next article will be on Kerry Edwards, but I have some personal chart readings to prepare first, so it may be several days. Posted by: on July 12, 2004 04:40 PMWhoops! Forgot my name above. Posted by: Nancy Waterman on July 12, 2004 04:41 PMMs. Waterman, This is perhaps the most astonishingly informative, well-written astrological essay I have ever read. You have an extraordinary talent for applying the logic of the stars and planets to important, world-impacting events. Our leaders would do well to have you as a full-time consultant. Thank you for the didactic explanations of your astrological extrapolations as well. Your narrative brings the charts being discussed into a kind of dynamic, living form. Thank you for your enlightening work; absolutey brilliant! Bravo! Dr. William Corrado Nancy, thank you so much for another insightful and well thought out article. My question is on a somewhat unrelated topic: as an astrological novice, could you help me with any insights into when, from an astro point of view, we might FINALLY have either (hopefully) indictments, or at least some sort of resolution in the Valerie Plame affair currently (and for over six months now) being investigated by U.S. prosecuting attorney Mr. Fitzgerald? Richard Astor Posted by: Richard Astor on July 12, 2004 05:18 PMNancy Waterman, you have outdone even yourself! Since I'm the one who has been whining over the past 24 hours for the input of you astrologers, it is my pleasure to say "Thank you!" I wish I had the resources to render that "Thank you" in huge, brilliant letters reflecting the brilliance of your article. Many, many thanks. Richard: I am very interested in the outcome of the Plame investigation and have been following it earnestly. I would like to hear astrology insights about it too. I did post an article on the previous article about the Plame affair. Did you see it or have a chance to read it? I would be interested in your opinion on the article. If it is correct, the Plame outing will have far reaching consequences globally. Posted by: Beverly on July 12, 2004 06:07 PMMSNBC wants to know if you think an election should be postponed due to a terrst attack. Go vote: CNN is asking the same thing. Posted by: shylurker on July 12, 2004 06:11 PMNancy, I am just floored by your analysis. In my Perfectly Visualized Universe all of the crumb~bums in the press are fired and replaced by grounded, thoughtful, intelligent and intuitive writers such as yourself. Thank you. You know I love the mythology (the alchemy between Beowulf/Grendel/Grendel's mum and David/Goliath is brilliant.) All I can say, speaking for all of your dedicated readers, is that we are not worthy. As Jo said on the last thread: They cannot win. They don't know how. They haven't got a clue. Love, laugh, rejoice. It's the best strategy of all. Namaste all~ Thank you, everyone, for your wonderful comments. They are much appreciated. Dommael - I quite agree about the power of visualization, though I often forget about it. In a way, the astrology helps me with it. I keep seeing Bush as miserable and thwarted with so many very difficult aspects all at once during the fall. And I envision the very strong Mars aspect to Kerry and Edwards at the time of the Inauguration as signs of winning. Then I picture Cheney miserable after the Inauguration with the Saturn station opposite his Venus, while Kerry dismantles all of Cheney's handiwork. I also continue to think about the tertiary progresed Saturn that is currently square the US Saturn til early November, and how it will dissipate after November. I think of that 10th house US Saturn as having to do with our country's prestige, which is at an all time low now due to this aspect and the Saturn transit also square that position. The feeling of a vise gripping us seems to dissipate with that aspect, after November. And the US Sun changes signs, giving us a feeling of a fresh start, also in November. So I use the astrological symbols as a way to visualize what is likely or possible to happen. Posted by: Nancy on July 12, 2004 07:37 PMNancy, This article was so well done. The threads are organized and taken to a clear conclusion in a way that made complex material almost easy to follow. This is an amazing in itself. The archtypical, historical-mythical comparisons and the tool of the drama triangle are very elegant and helpful, too. Thank you for undertaking a somewhat Herculean task and giving us a picture of what to expect. I also want to thank Cass in the previous thread, and Dommael, Jo and others who have reiterated the philosophy that we ARE powerful. Our solution is to Take Action and Pray/ Visualize. I am beginning to become involved in voter registration and will continue to help the Kerry campaign until the end. I will continue to visualize peace and a blue U.S. (Jo, I like your blue/purple associations very much and, Jo & & Dommael, I like your poetic visualizations.) Take heart, be strong, the medicine is being mixed and peace will ensue. Let's believe and dare to project that more & more people will disassociate themselves with the violence and corruption, including our own army and the Muslim peoples in the Mideast. Thank you, Pallas, too, and Skylurker, Mike, Dave, etc. for your excellent discussion on the previous thread. Let's not be reactive but tune into the collective mind and form a good and effective plan to restore peace and sanity, even if there is a period of worsening first. Let's know that G-d, the angels, guides & all souls will help restore balance to the earth. Think blue. Think purple. Sharon Posted by: Sharon Katz on July 12, 2004 07:41 PMBeverly, Thanks for the link to Steve Quayle's fascinating website and article re Valerie Plame and the potentially disastrous consequences for the U.S. economy/dollar of high level indictments. I want to tell you about a similar article on the website www. from the wilderness.com called "Coup D'etat". One of the strikingly similar main points is that Bush/Cheney is now "done" because their gross incompetence has greatly displeased the Wall St./big money interests "board of directors" as the author puts it, because they are endangering the U.S. economy. Also there are other minor technicalities such as the fact that the CIA and uniformed military top brass are also determined to take them down. Personally, I don't think the CIA will lay down for the blame re bad WMD advice to Bushco for much longer! One of the astrologers connected with this site(I forget exactly who)predicts a possible financial crisis for the U.S.regarding currency in early September, so perhaps this is when Plame indictments, and the subsequent financial fallout may finally happen! Posted by: Richard Astor on July 12, 2004 07:46 PMOne think I just noticed is that the time periods Nancy singled out that offer the most potential for violence do not include the time of the Democratic Convention, of which I am glad. I have read that Al Queda supports the re-election of Bush and who can blame them? - he is doing their job singlehandedly. On the other hand, I would think that they would also want the Neocons out. Posted by: bhakti on July 12, 2004 08:18 PMNancy, how about the 30 year cycle from Munich in 1972, also held in Europe and now after 32 years Olympics in Athens, in the same vicinity? Saturn Raj - I don't have the chart for the 1972 Olympics. It would be interesting to look at. As for the Plame investigation, I am not sure what to look at. Bush seems to have increasing difficulties come September. Now he is barely treading water, but new difficulties emerge or old ones resurface in September. It is hard to say what exactly is causing it though. The Saturn transit to US 8th house Mercury makes me think that at least one thing will also be impacting the US. I continue to think it will have to do with the economy, at least in part. The Neptune quincunx to his Sun is very strong from now through August 11th. There is a trigger from Mars July 15 -16, and the Sun around August 5. These are possible times for scandals to erupt. Posted by: Nancy on July 12, 2004 09:20 PMAs I gave a little more thought to Olympics, Nancy The year, I got it wrong, it must have been 1940. Posted by: Raj on July 12, 2004 09:42 PMThankyou, thankyou all. You are my shelter from the storm. There is an interesting article by Michael C Ruppert on the possible cancellation of elections legislation soon to be introduced. http://www.fromthewilderness.com/free/ww3/061204_election_delayed.shtml Posted by: Shade on July 12, 2004 09:42 PMFrom Josh Marshall at http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com There certainly is an unseemly eagerness on the part of the White House to canvass ideas (embodied in legislation) for a possible delay of the November election in the event of a terrorist attack, as this and other articles explain. The rationale is that we need to have some policy in place for a possible election postponement before some precipitating event actually occurs. But my understanding is that we already have a policy in place on postponements: i.e., we don't do them. Added to my suspicion is the increasingly common refrain from the White House that the Madrid bombing was responsible for Spanish 'appeasement' in Iraq and the obvious subtext that the answer to any future terrorist attack would be to 'not give in', i.e. reelect President Bush. --------- I see Dubya in Crawford in November clearing brush... he's happy to be out of the White House. Laura is there beside him, beaming... In January, I see Kerry is in the White House, and Teresa is rolling up her sleeves ready to call in the fumigators. John Edwards is having the concrete barricades removed from the grounds, and Morgana, Joanna O. and Shylurker and WV, and I (and whomever else wants to join in) are setting a date after the last frost to plant wild flowers on the lawn... the Demos control the Senate and there's 50/50 in the House. The sun is shining brightly and Congress is settling in to roll back the Patriot Act and thousands of pieces of legislation that the Neocons put in place. Busloads of people arrive daily with petitions for grievances against the Bush/Cheney administration and the new Attorney General is innundated with criminal proceedings against many of the previous administration. The Hague is waiting for delivery of war criminals. Gordon Brown, the new Prime Minister of Great Britain is busy repairing the damage created by the Blair government and has NO plans to meet with President Kerry anytime soon... he is too busy minding his own store, to play gopher, the role of his predecessor. Dr. Howard Dean is busy orchestrating changes in the electoral college, perhaps abolishment of it entirely, along with other antiquated portions of our system. People from every walk of life are active at the local levels, energizing the movement for a new 'Continental Congress' to convene and address the deficiencies that led to the hubris and abuse of power of the Bush administration. Hope is alive and well. Namaste Posted by: Jo on July 12, 2004 09:45 PMJo, You go girl! What a powerful visualization! Posted by: Sharon Katz on July 12, 2004 09:49 PM

Posted by: Beverly on July 12, 2004 11:10 PMAye, Beverly, that's the word on everyone's lips ~ check out the posts upthread. Raj is correct, there is no legal precedent and the only thing stopping the cabal is the Constitution and our freedom to let the reps know we're not going to stand for this. Can there be any doubt that they're fascists now? A Constitutional amendment would take 2/3rds of the Congress and 2/3rds of the states. It takes a long time and is likely impossible to achieve. I agree that they can't really change the date legally without an amendment. It seems to me that if we actually had a 9/11 type of attack on election day, all they would need to do would be to extend the voting to the next day at noon, giving people an extra morning to finish it up. They would hold the results til noon on the third. But the elections would still have been held on the 2nd, as prescribed by law. One of my clients told me that John McCain today said we should not delay the elections. it just empowers the terrorists. Posted by: Nancy on July 12, 2004 11:39 PMThe whole idea is daft from top to bottom and is a clear example (to me) that the White House is losing it's grip on reality from the top on down. Got this in an email just now - Take Action To Stop Bush From Cancelling The Election A number of groups have started letting writing campaigns today to newspapers and other media outlets to let them know it will not be acceptable for the Bush administration to cancel the November presidential election. As many of you have heard on the news today the Bush administration is considering plans to postpone or cancel or postpone the presidential election claiming a terrorist threat may disrupt the political process. In an article today Capitol Hill Blue described it a "a desperation attempt to hold on to the presidency" In the entire history of our country there has never been an administration that has attempted to stop a presidential election so they could remain in office. Our nation has survived a Civil War, two world wars, the Cold War, the Cuban Missle Crisis, many other wars and natural disasters in over 200 years and has always kept our Constitution intact and has never cancelled a presidential election. We need to get letters to the editor out to local newspapers and media outlets and let them know the American public will not accept this. If you already have a Kerry Volunter Center account, just click on MediaCorps on the left in the Volunteer Center for a list of newspapers and other media outlets in your area. You can send letters to up to 5 newspapers at one time. You can then click the Back button in your browser and you can send additional letters. If you have not signed up for an account please sign up for one now it only takes a few seconds to register. It is important that your voice be heard. The Bush administration has launched their trial balloon to see how much opposition there will be so they can decide if they can do this. We need to let them know they cannot get away with it. If you can please take a few minutes and write letters to the editor in your own words. A sample letter is copied below to give you some ideas of points that can be made. Rob SAMPLE LETTER TO THE EDITOR Dear Editor, Let me see if I understand correctly: In response to an alleged I have a better idea: Let's put all our energy into securing
That's right, Beverly, as Nancy has explained, it will be a very long process, with 2/3 of 50 states Everything comes full circle;case in point the Reagans.Ronny was a Democrat and then the silly excuse he gave for becoming a turncoat repug was that the party left him and now, Ronnie jr. addressing the Democratic convention, saying the Here is the most recent on Tom Delay for anyone interested. Also Washington Post supposed to have a cover story about it tomorrow. Thanks everybody for the conversation about the election delays. What if they sack these plans and go for the provision in the Constitution that gives the President the power to declare Martial Law in case of natural disaster, terrorism, etc. Wouldn't that serve their purpose. What exactly does it say. Does anyone know? I agree that we need to take measures to perserve democracy, prioritize that issue versus postponing/cancelling elections. Seems they have their priorities backwards again. "If people think that the turnout of new voters was high in the year 2000, they haven't seen anything yet," Mfume told a gathering about 7,000 cheering members at during a plenary session at the Convention Center. Mfume also took critical aim at Democrats. "Accountability requires that we reject pandering of both parties," Mfume said. "Every Republican is not our enemy and every Democrat is not our friend. "We still have a society where some in the Democratic Party take our votes for granted, and many in the Republican Party refuse to campaign for them." Despite the tough words against the Democrats, the NAACP announced today that today it would show the movie Fahrenheit 9/11 to its members in the Convention Center's grand ballroom. The documentary film, by Michael Moore, is highly critical of the Bush administration. The Democrats' presumptive nominee, Sen. John Kerry, is scheduled to address the group Thursday. The group also announced that Rev. Jesse Jackson, a former Democratic presidential candidate, will address the convention Wednesday.
A blackout like we had last summer and blamed on AlQ would certainly halt the elections. During his keynote speech at the group's 95th annual convention Sunday night in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Bond also assailed the Bush administration and the Republican Party, accusing the GOP of "playing the race card in election after election." The party appeals "to the dark underside of American culture, to the minority of Americans who reject democracy and equality," Bond said. "They preach neutrality and practice racial division." Many black people are "ready to turn anger into action, to work for regime change here at home," Bond said. "But they have to be asked. Rice Says 'No' to Plan for Delaying Elections WASHINGTON — The head of a new federal voting commission suggested to congressional leaders Monday that there should be a process for canceling or rescheduling an election interrupted by terrorism, but national security adviser Condoleezza Rice (search) said no such plan is being considered by the administration. Federal officials warned last week that intelligence indicates Al Qaeda (search) wants to attack the United States to disrupt the upcoming elections. "There does not appear to be a clear process in place to suspend or reschedule voting during an election if there is a major terrorist attack," DeForest B. Soaries, chairman of the U.S. Election Assistance Commission, wrote in a letter to Republican and Democratic leaders in the House and Senate. The Associated Press obtained a copy of the one-page letter. Rice said the Bush administration, while concerned about the impact of terrorism, is not thinking of postponing the elections. "We've had elections in this country when we were at war, even when we were in civil war. And we should have the elections on time. That's the view of the president, that's the view of the administration," Rice said in a televised interview Monday. more... http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,125454,00.html With Rice stating they aren't going to postpone elections, it sounds like all the publicity got to them. Bravo for all the people spreading warnings of this threat over the media and the internet. Posted by: mike on July 13, 2004 03:51 AMAlthough a plan to re-schedule elections would seem suspicious, I hear true concern on the part of Soaries, Chair of the U.S. Elections Assistance, that were there to be a disruption on election day (power outages; road blocks, etc.) and some areas could not get to the poll, how would it be handled? Especially if people could not get to the polls for quite a while. What he is asking is what will be done and Rice is saying nothing will be done. Thus, it seems, that we might be left with martial law. I heard on the radio today that the Homeland Security Act already gives the prez that authority. Apparently, it states that when the danger level goes into the Red Zone, the prez has the authority to cancel all Government Activities, and seize assets (?) until the threat is no longer imminent. It essentially allows the prez to declare martial law for as long as needed. That could be forever. The radio announcer urged all listeners to contact their senators and congressmen and demand that they question this piece of the Homeland Security Act as it relates to the election and get the administration to state for the record exactly what he is empowered to do during a red alert. Posted by: Stephanie on July 13, 2004 04:33 AMRegarding "any major planetary activity impacting the US 13 degree Sagittarius Ascendant from July through October 2004 as there was on 9/11/01 when Pluto was crossing that point and Saturn was opposed," I think the inclusion of Pluto as a "major" TNO planet needs to include the other TNO's in consideration, so I'll offer that perspective. Pluto is just one of a few other TNO's to be crossing over the US ascendent this decade. TNO Varuna was exactly conjunt Jupiter/USA's Sun/Bush's Sun on 9/11, quincunx the 13' Saj ascendent, which is natally squared by Varuna at 13 Virgo. Saturns crossing over that 13' Cancer point recently has invoked a lot of fear. But as for 13' Sag, it's Quaoar that should be noticed. There are about 7 significant TNO's to watch, and 4 of them are crossing over the USA's ascendent from about 1993 through about the end of this decade. They all conjuncted within a few years in the early 1990's in early Sag, and now are taking turns in crossing over into the first quad of the USA. First Ixion, then Pluto, now Quaoar, and then Ixion. Natally, Quaoar is directly conjunct the USA's Moon, at 27' Aquarius. Right now, it's at 12'05 Sag, and Ixion, at 8'06 Sag right now, will cross over in a few years. We should also take note that the USA's natal Pluto at 27' Capricorn in the second is about to be conjuncted by transiting Chiron, at 23' Rx currently. Natally, Chiron is the lone 4th house planet for the USA's Sag chart, and it is opposite the natal Saturn of USA. So... I don't think I can exclude an attack occuring on the US's soil. There's just too many connections with Bush and the Republicans to these hard aspects. It would be best for the US to get the GOP out of power, so that they con inflict these projections onto themselves and their own infighting, rather than onto the world. The progressed chart of the US has some notable features in November that I wanted to mention. Progressed Mercury is retrograde, is at 27' Aquarius, conjunct Quaoar and the Moon, which is the exact progressed conjunction that the Sun has been pulling away from; and listen to this, will ingress into Pisces exact on the day of the election. That could be seen as a good fresh new beginning, or, in Pisces, heading into the IC, as the final draw down to the depths of the chart, which is where the progressed Sun is headed regardless, for the USA. It'll be a mixture. Of upcoming notable progressions of the USA's chart, over the rest of this decade, here's one that stands out. Progressed Venus conjuncts natal Chiron; and this is opposite progressed Mars turning Rx conjunct the natal Saturn, and then conjuncted by the progressed Moon. That's all mid Aires and Libra angles, so we are talking egos and partnerships, individualism and comminitarian, men and women... things have been out of balance for a long long time, but that's gonna change. This opposition will shake it all up and strike a new perspective. That's a real shift of the Mars-Venus energy, pushed along by Moon-Chiron for the US coming up. It'll take 8 years to transpire, when it culminates by 2012. There may be disasters, but that's just one side of the energy, as there are also transformations, just depends on the perspective, and how well you live it. Posted by: shylurker on July 13, 2004 05:15 AM***Good News*** i violated my self imposed boycott of network/cable news today and was rewarded for that lapse with some EXTREMELY good news (cheer up Shylurker). the story about postponing/canceling the elections was all over the place. keep in mind that this started out sunday night with links to a newsweek 'periscope' blurb (not a full article) posted on buzzflash.com and a few leftie blogs. within the course of ONE evening, enough people were mobilized and writing their congressional representatives along with news outlets to push this story front-and-center. the impression i get is that people all over the country got on the internet, saw this, and said ENOUGH ALREADY. this was followed by immediate action via letters to congress and news outlets and then by stories all over the place. the extremely good news is that the amorphous 'we' acted as one and shortened the news cycle. think about the other stories languishing out there that have not had the collective push, e.g., saudi flights after 9/11, bush's harken energy fiasco, corruption a gogo at the pentagon. it took moore to make the saudi flights prominent and still there is no major media focus. the differences between cancelled elections and the other stories are: the election issue is huge and there was a spontaneous, collective, powerful effort to bring it to prominence. i looked at a chart for last night at 10pm EST for ‘the whole world’ on astrodienst. Of note the event chart had a sun at 19 cancer (mid point between the US sun and US mercury); venus at 8 Cancer (midpoint between the US jupiter and US sun); and mars at 8 pices (trine the event chart venus). could this mean our sense of morality and insight was awakened (event venus activated by the US sun and jupiter) and moved from observation and feeling to action (event mars trining event venus) in the form communication (event sun midpoint between US mercury and sun). who knows? Mike, How right you are about the fact that the election issue is huge... this 'leak' may be the tipping point, and the fascists can take credit for bringing it about! I've said before that there are still some things that unite us as Americans... certainly taking away our right to vote in an election is the top of the list... there has always existed the possibility of a blizzard or blackout or some such event to prevent folks from getting to the polls or voting when they arrived... but it has never materialized... now come the folks who couldn't or wouldn't take serious the Aug 6 memo suggesting terrorism on American soil, suggesting more than four months prior to the election that they have 'intelligence' that there may be a terrorist act the day of the election? Forgive me if I find that to be b.s. --- I don't buy the official story for the 9/11 events, so I still find it incredible that 'al-quaeda' [whomever that is] could prevent our Nov 2nd elections from going forward. The events of 9/11 did not happen without 'state' [or 'states'] support and the planning of a massive intelligence system beyond anything the world of Islam possesses... so, in my opinion the only thing we have to fear is 'fear itself' and the Neocons. We are being manipulated. And the way you fight manipulation is to 'call the game' --- the moment you confront the manipulator, name the game... it's over. America is creating its own fear... It's past time to call the game, beginning with Faux Noos and the other media whores, right up to the Big House, which is no longer White. Only I have a problem here as I don't belive a thing the gov. says and definately do not believe that 9/11 was done by mid east hijackers. Remember the picture of Atta in the airport, I forgot where he was, but it was not where any planes took off on 9/11. Yes we saw that over and over. But where were the pictures of any hijackers in the airports on 9/11 in which the planes took off. And how can they have made the mistake of claiming who the hijackers where after looking at the security camera pictures (airports are loaded with security camera's) when at least 6 have proved that they are still alive and well and where not even in the states. Just common sense tells you that there where no hijackers. And there are about 100 of similar things that you can read on the net that proves the point. And Zawahin is has been dead now several months according to the Iraqi's. But Nancy your reading just has to be changed a bit in the wording to tell the real story behind 9/11, etc. Same reading just different who's. We now have 2 things going on since invading Iraq. We have the fake Al quida and the real Al Quida and it is hard to distinguish between the two. You just have to ask yourself who gained by an attack, to figure out which it was. I especially liked the reference to victum, rescurer and prosecutor. The rescurer always gets the boot in the butt by the victum turned prosector. This is because of the psycological stance of each. The Recurer is in the position of You will be OK if you do what I say. Which is just a big discount. The victum says hell no, I won't, I'm the one OK and you are not. So take that. This adminstration is not only doing this to Iraqi but also to the American people. I hope that this game being played out does not lead to blood on our streets, but it might. And I am not talking about outside terriosts. So far what I am seeing in the media is all about Congress passing the referndem. They are not saying that this is only step one and the states must also vote on such matters. It is so clear in the constitution of elections and how to amend the constitution that it is not open to debate even by the supreme court. But this adminstration has broken the constitution several times already, so don't think they won't again. And if they do then Bush assumes not the presendency but dictator. It is so similar how Democratic Germany ended up with Hitler as dictator. And it happened because of the compacency of the German population. Mighty interesting to me that Bush Administration (and within that broad term I include intelligence sources, or at least the ones they had that were 'intelligent' --- we know some of them are not the brightest crayons in the box!) claims they were hit broadside, didn't see the events of 9/11 coming... no siree, not at all... Yet my brothers and sisters, within 24 hours (count 'em) they knew the number and names and ethenicity of all 'hijackers'... Sherlock Holmes was never that fast and determined. But the 'official story' has never corrected those little pieces of untruth... Tied up a little too neatly, too quickly to suit me. Heck they didn't have to steal passports... the names never appeared on the passenger manifests and their pictures are not in the security cameras yet every blessed one of them boarded a plane carrying 'box cutters' and other items that somehow got through the security check. Well, you know there is simply no way to track everything is there? I mean once in a while, things go undetected. But I studied physics (still do) and I have never encountered such tales of the absolute defiance of natural laws, not once, not twice but --- shoot, count 'em! Nineteen times. Instead of diminishing evil, it multiplies it. Through violence you may murder the liar, but you cannot murder the lie, nor establish the truth. Through violence you may murder the hater, but you do not murder hate, In fact violence merely increases hate. So it goes. Returning violence for violence multiplies violence, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that. I've read that some people thought it was odd that right after 9/11, the photos of the "culprits" were instantly located. Also, I recall reading that David Icke thought the whole notion of Mohammed Atta leaving his rental car outside the airport with the Koran was just too flipping obvious. Of course, then he brings up the notion of our illustrious leaders being reptiles, and well...you know the rest. Now as far as possible terrorist attacks, I've been thinking about what we could expect. I've been looking at some major terrorist attacks from this past decade, and I've come to some conclusions. 1) I believe that Al-Qaida wants to establish itself as a world-wide terrorist organization. The history of their attacks shows this. (see below) 2) Al-Qaida seems to be widening its scope. It appears to be using unpredictability as a 'wild card'. This is meant to maximize the fear and uncertainty. In other words, "there is no place on earth where you can be safe". 3) I looked at the dates of the biggest terror attacks. Again, the attacks are spread out over the almanack. Of these 16 most recent attacks, there has been 1 attack in each month, except July which had none. May had 3 attacks. October had 3 attacks, if you include the simultaneous attack on Aug. 7, '98. 4) I believe they are planning some major terrorist attack, but it may not be in the U.S. Chances are that it will be in Saudi Arabia, or some other surprise location. My humble prediction: watch for unexpected targets. This seems to be their modus operandi. Also, they appear to be interested in "sin" targets, such as nightclubs, or maybe bars as a sign of their judgmentalism. I always thought that it was pretty dramatic evidence of the Jupiter cycle that he was elected Govenor when Jupiter crossed his Asc-Mars-Neptune in 1980 and then President twelve years later when Jupiter was just about exactly on the Asc on election day. In showing my friends this i realized that, of course, Jupiter is there again this election day, not as exact a conjunction to the Asc as in 93 but still conjunct. Interesting? I am healed enough to be a whistleblower and have learned it has caused most parties in the Triangle to be really pissed at first but gradually coming to me and treating me with respect and not pulling me into any corners. If they try to I call them on it and can sniff the Triangle coming miles away. http://www.informationclearinghouse.info/article6476.htm Posted by: wv on July 14, 2004 01:38 PMTimothy, Cliss, I don't know of or who David Icke is... but I do know you don't have to believe we are reptiles to discount the 'official story'... and on Al-qaeda, do you have evidence of bin Laden being Al-qaeda? or, for that matter, do you have documentation or evidence of Al-qaeda, outside of their being a creation of the CIA and another foreign intelligence agency in the early 1980s? I grew up with the mantra "the Russians are coming, the Russians are coming" --- now it is "al-qaeda did it, al-qaeda did it" --- When I ask my grandchildren who did something, it is always "not me" --- Not me is the villain in my little world, and al-qaeda in the Big world... Nancy's article above points to several important significant undiscussed points, one being: "In our War on Terror and our War in Iraq we are very much stuck in the Drama Triangle. And in our stoking the flames of our self-righteous anger against terrorism, we have failed to see how our own deeds have been igniting the fires that rage against us." IMHO it does not take a rocket scientist to predict that there will be future attacks against the US outside of and/or on its soil. Look at how many people in the world are angry with our behavior... I suggest we take a moment to look at where our focus is these days --- 7/6 Kerry named Edwards as his VP... the media was focused on Kerry/Edwards, not on Bush... one day later, Mr. Cheney grabs the focus by suggesting there might be a terrorist act on election day. Boy, wouldn't you like to own his crystal ball! 'Course you don't need a crystal ball if you have enough control to manifest your dreams, do you? Anyway, here we are, day in day out, talking about the elections being 'suspended', postponed, "al-qaeda attacking" us... Nevermind that more than the usual number of American troops are falling weekly in Iraq (post June 30th), nevermind that Bush is so low in the polls we might forget his name, nevermind that Iraq is even more of a quagmire, nevermind that... well, you get the picture... Just follow the Rove/Cheney bouncing ball, wherever it directs you... let's all sing along now, 1-2-3... "we are not stupid like the Spanish, we will not be duped by the terrorists, we know Bush is best for us, and when the terrorists come, we will lay down our ballots and follow our commander-in-thief (for the second theft) straight into h--- Namaste Posted by: Jo on July 14, 2004 02:09 PM Jo - you are by far the best essayist on this WV, The worst of 9/11 was the demise of our way of life as we thought it to be... even that now appears to have been an illusion. We can wallow in the sorrow of that loss --- or we can visualize and manifest something closer to our ideal, to the 'illusion' we thought there was... it is up to us --- all of us, the people... not to a few who would set themselves up as our leaders without our consent. Nancy's words above suggest to us that we must see ourselves as others (those throughout the world as well as those within our boundaries) see us... it is not a pretty sight... and it is not easy to see. But we must in order to transform. That is truly what tPluto is saying: Change or be changed; transform or be destroyed. Looking at this board, I "see" nothing but strong willed individuals; caring, thoughtful, compassionate people who will not allow destruction but who are willing to transform and are indeed engaging in transformation... if there are so many here, think how many there are elsewhere... tPluto has been conjunct my sister's sun as it opposed my own nSun... for over nine months, she has been engaged in constant change and difficult times... she reached her bottom on June 6th, and battled her way upward... she is making small changes daily, ever upward. tPluto has hit her hard, but she is still here... because she is changing for her own particular higher good... if my sister, one individual, can withstand these difficult times... there is much hope for all of us collectively. It is hope that we must cling to, not the fear dished out daily through the media by those who know the results of psych ops. Nancy mentions cracks in the facade above. Let's widen those cracks by taking responsibility for our excessive behavior, our overconsumption of resources, etc. We are not simply the people... we are the "leaders." Dubya's whole attitude about fighting terrorism just keeps it going and intensifies it. It manifests in all the mistakes he has made, but the source is the attitude: trying to crush it by aggression, making us the victims of this unmitigated "evil". They can on this day, right now - with little provocation - impose martial law if they want to. They're already arresting people with anti-bush tee shirts at rallies, hustling them off to slam city for "trespassing" on public property at a public rally, having them fired from their jobs, for krissakes! They already have the power to do that and the Patriot Act gives them, together with the Justice Dept and FEMA, sweeping authority to imprison dissenters. Now, I don't know how long those draconian measures would stand against a population that is armed, but if the threat happened to be a biological one instead of bombs, wouldn't the population be inclined to stay protected within the confines of their homes - at least for a time? Well, today they have a new sign. It's 20 feet long with 12 inch high red letters and it says "IMPEACH THE ENTIRE ADMINISTRATION!!!" Now that's progress! Hauled off and fingerprinted for wearing a t-shirt saying "Hate Bush"? Susan's right about the powers they assert under the Patriot Act. It's my understanding they have pulled all local police into the FEMA umbrella. Does anyone know if this is correct? And FEMA of course is under the Patriot Act. We are living in a police state. How many times do we have to say that to ourselves before we internalize it? The Patriot Act was rolled out within days after 9/11... they had that prepared beforehand. Any red flags going up? They sure should be. As for the 'Homeland Security' alerts, if they go to 'red' FEMA goes into action, schools, etc go into 'lockdown' --- right? That means you can't pick your children up, right? Because no cars are allowed on the street, right? If I'm wrong about this, please someone correct me... because this is what the schools are telling the children. Posted by: Jo on July 15, 2004 12:57 AMAdding onto your observations, Jo: Local police are now armed to the teeth. For "crowd control" (I hate that euphemism)! So, why are they now armed with so much "crowd control" stuff? Posted by: shylurker on July 15, 2004 01:02 AMIndeed so, Jo! "cheney's et al psych ops" is all they really have... which they practice FIRST on the USian population. It's an old, old Dominator Model trick. If the plutocrat/oligarch/ruler can get the population to colonize their own innards with hisself, that is, the "Big Daddie who's going to take care of you or ELSE!" image, then 98% of their self-serving fear-based plan is a done-deal... for a time. There's a heckovalot more of us than there are pluties, as Dommael has so aptly observed. It takes enormous energy to do what they do--suppress & dominate--so they seek to take/use OUR energy. I, too, see no reason why we should have a Top-down Dominator System either... not whatsoever. After all, "president" is pretty much the same as "king" or "monarch" or "ruler" or "prime minister." "prez" & "pm" is 'sposed to be more palatable than other names... psych-op trick. Thank the Goddess for the Internet!!! Otherwise, we'd be the same baked cookies... We will move into a Partnership Model of human becomings (evolving into human beings)... better sooner than later. We are in the process of "letting go" of many old unworkable patterns & that makes for fear, too. When the lst of the transsaturn planets (uranus in aquarius) began to make a T-sq out of my leo pluto/saturn & scorpio jupiter/mercury/mars, I figured I was a VERY "baked cookie" if I held on to old ways/old days... so I "let go"... an inner attitude. Gender relations(1) -- PARTNERSHIP MODEL : Females & males are equally valued in the governing ideology, & stereotypically “feminine” values such as nurturance & nonviolence can be given operational primacy. -- DOMINATOR MODEL: The male is ranked over the female & the traits & social values stereotypically associated with “masculinity” are valued more highly than those associated with “femininity.” COMPONENT: 2. Violence -- PARTNERSHIP MODEL : Violence & abuse are not structural components of the system, so that both boys & girls can be taught nonviolent conflict resolution. Accordingly, there is a low degree of social violence. -- DOMINATOR MODEL: A high degree of social violence & abuse is institutionalized, ranging from wife-&-child beating, rape, & warfare to psychological abuse by “superiors” in the family, the work place, & society at large. COMPONENT: 3. Social structure -- PARTNERSHIP MODEL : The social structure is more generally egalitarian, with difference (be it based on gender, race, religion, sexual orientation, or belief system) not automatically associated with superior or inferior social &/or economic status. -- DOMINATOR MODEL: The social structure is predominantly hierarchic(2) & authoritarian, with the degree of authoritarianism & hierarchism roughly corresponding to the degree of male dominance. COMPONENT: 4. Sexuality -- PARTNERSHIP MODEL : Mutual respect & freedom of choice for both females & males are characteristic of mate selection, sexual intercourse, & procreation. Primary functions of sex are the bonding between female & male through the give & take of mutual pleasure, & the reproduction of species. -- DOMINATOR MODEL: Coercion is a major element in mate selection, sexual intercourse, & procreation with the erotization of dominance &/or the repression of erotic pleasure through fear. Primary functions of sex are male procreation & male sexual release. COMPONENT: 5. Spirituality -- PARTNERSHIP MODEL : The spiritual dimension of both women’s & nature’s life-giving & sustaining powers is recognized & highly valued, as are these powers in men. Spirituality is linked with empathy & equity, & the divine is imaged through myths & symbols of unconditional love. -- DOMINATOR MODEL: Men & spirituality are ranked over women & nature, justifying their domination & exploitation. The powers that govern the universe are imaged as punitive entities, be it as a detached father whose orders must be obeyed on pain of terrible punishments, a cruel Mother, or demons & monsters who delight in arbitrarily tormenting humans, & hence must be placated. COMPONENT: 6. Pleasure & pain -- PARTNERSHIP MODEL : Human relations are held together more by pleasure bonds than by fear of pain. The pleasures of caring behaviors are socially supported, & pleasure is associated with empathy for others. Care- giving, lovemaking & other activities that give pleasure are considered sacred. -- DOMINATOR MODEL: The infliction or threat of pain is integral to systems maintenance. The pleasures of touch in both sexual & parent-child relations are associated with domination & submission, & thus also with pain, be it in the so-called carnal love of sex or in submission to a “loving” deity. The infliction &/or suffering of pain are sacralized. COMPONENT: 7. Power & love -- PARTNERSHIP MODEL : The highest power is the power to give, nurture, & illuminate life, symbolized since remote antiquity by the holy chalice or grail. Love is recognized as the highest expression of the evolution of life on our planet, as well as the universal unifying power. -- DOMINATOR MODEL: The highest power is the power to dominate & destroy, symbolized since remote antiquity by the lethal power of the blade. “Love” & “passion” are frequently used to justify violent & abusive actions by those who dominate, as in the killing of women by men when they suspect them of sexual independence, or in “holy wars” said to be waged out of love for a deity that demands obeisance from all. (1) Please note that the terms "femininity" & "masculinity" as used here correspond to the sexual stereotypes socially constructed for a dominator society (where masculinity is equated with dominance & conquest, & femininity with passivity & submissiveness) & NOT to any inherent female or male traits. (2) As used here, the term "hierarchic" refers to what we may call a domination hierarchy, or the type of hierarchy inherent in a Dominator model of social organization, based on fear & the threat of pain. Such hierarchies should be distinguished from a second type of hierarchy, which may be called an actualization hierarchy. An example from biology is the hierarchy of molecules, cells, & organs in the body: a progression toward a higher & more complex level of function. In social systems, hierarchies of actualization go along with the equation of power with the power to create & to elicit from oneself & others our highest potentials. -- R Eisler, human relations theorist & author of The Chalice & the Blade. The $7.384 trillion debt limit may need attention before the November election, Timothy Bitsberger, Treasury's nominee for assistant secretary for financial markets, said in a document obtained by Reuters on Wednesday. "It appears very likely the limit will be reached sometime in late September or October, with the most likely date being early October," Bitsberger said in the submission for the record after his Senate confirmation hearing last week.

As this site notes, the lawyer representing President Bush in the Plame case, James E. Sharp, is also defending Ken Lay in the Enron Götterdämmerung case. Admittedly, it probably doesn't presage a joint defense. But the optics leave a bit to be desired, no? ------------ "So back to our topic at hand. The newly-released Butler Report -- a rough analogue in the UK to the Senate intel report out last week -- not only exonerates Tony Blair's So let's see where this leaves us. From the start of the Niger uranium controversy, or rather since the IAEA dismissed the purported agreement documents as forgeries, the British have stood by their claim that the Iraqis were trying to purchase uranium in Africa and, specifically, that their conclusion was based on sources separate from the discredited documents. And, indeed, the Butler Report repeats precisely this claim: that the UK had "credible" evidence that the Iraqis were trying to purchase uranium in Africa, specifically from Niger and the Democratic Republic of Congo. (The relevant discussions in the Report are on pages 121-225) The report states that, like many other countries, the Brits became aware of an Iraqi diplomat's visit to Niger in 1999 and concluded that this was likely aimed at discussing uranium sales. This judgment was made on the basis of a) Iraq's earlier purchases of uranium from Niger (circa late 70s and early 80s), b) their presumed resumption of a nuclear weapons program, and c) the fact the Niger exports little of value beside uranium. This is a standard part of the story, widely known. The reference to the additional evidence on Niger comes on page 122, paragraph 495 ... During 2002, the UK received further intelligence from additional sources which identified the purpose of the visit to Niger as having been to negotiate the purchase of uranium ore, though there was disagreement as to whether a sale had been agreed and uranium shipped. There was further and separate intelligence that in 1999 the Iraqi regime had also made inquiries about the purchase of uranium ore in the Democratic Republic of Congo. In this case, there was some evidence that by 2002 an agreement for a sale had been reached. If this subject interests you, I'd strongly suggest that you read the whole passage yourself. It's quite brief, no more than a couple minutes to read. Trudeau attended Yale University with Bush in the late 1960s and served with him on a dormitory social committee. ``Even then he had clearly awesome social skills,'' Trudeau said. ``He could also make you feel extremely uncomfortable ... He was extremely skilled at controlling people and outcomes in that way. Little bits of perfectly placed humiliation.'' Trudeau said he penned his very first cartoon to illustrate an article in the Yale Daily News on Bush and allegations that his fraternity, DKE, had hazed incoming pledges by branding them with an iron. The article in the campus paper prompted The New York Times to interview Bush, who was a senior that year. Trudeau recalled that Bush told the Times ``it was just a coat hanger, and ... it didn't hurt any more than a cigarette burn.'' ``It does put one in mind of what his views on torture might be today,'' Trudeau said. Having mocked presidents of both parties in the ``Doonesbury'' strip since 1971, Trudeau said Bush has been, ``tragically, the best target'' he's worked with yet. ``Bush has created more harm to this country's standing and security than any president in history,'' Trudeau said. ``What a shame the world has to suffer the consequences of Dubya not getting enough approval from Dad.'' Rolling Stone was publishing the interview Friday. Remember Abu Ghraib? Remember S.C. (Rep) Sen. Lindsey Graham? I wrote Sen Graham asking him to live up to his promise to discover how far up the responsibility went for what happened at Abu Ghraib. I got a response yesterday that I would like to share with you. Here is an excerpt: "In this situation we need to push politics aside, and prove to the world that in a democracy, when mistakes are made and crimes are committed, those who are responsible are held accountable. The Army has alaready charged and disciplined some of those involved. Investigations are continuing, and more details will come to light during the prosecutions of those involved. That being said, it is important that sergeants and privates do not take the fall for those commanders who bear responsibility for what happened at Abu Ghraib." --------- Kids sodomized at Abu Ghraib - Hersh has seen the videos (From the diaries -- kos) This is a summary of Hersh speaking at the ACLU 2004 America At A Crossroads conference according to EdCone.com (via Oliver Willis). The US Civil Rights Commission has asked Greg Palast to testify before a special commission hearing Thursday, July 15th at 11am, to discuss his continuing investigative reports for BBC Television on Florida and other states' cleansing of Black voters from voter rolls. Palast's reports provide the basis for the story on the vote fix in Florida featured in Michael Moore's “Fahrenheit 9/11.” Palast's latest investigation has uncovered new attempts by the State of Florida to take away the votes of African-Americans - this includes a fix in registries and in ballot counting methods and racial bias in the computerization of the ballot box. "Florida put Jim Crow in cyberspace in 2000 ... and it's looking worse in 2004." The Democratic Caucus of Congress has also asked Palast to appear Thursday morning before the hearings to explain the latest from his investigations of vote fixes and the Bush-bin Laden family connection. Palast will also be a panelist on a joint Minority Outreach Forum sponsored by the Congressional Black Caucus and Senator Hillary Clinton. "I'm happy to speak to Republicans, too,” said journalist Palast, "but I haven't received a request to drop by Dick Cheney's bunker." C-Span is expected to provide coverage of this event. I have a powerful imagination. I can visualize both the best potential that humanity has to offer and the profound depths of darkness we could descend to. This new evidence about what happened at Abu Ghraib is...there is absolutely no word. In putting this into some kind of psychological perspective, I am reminded of some of the classic anti-semitic stereotypes from Old Europe. It used to be widely believed that the Jews did things like what was done (and is probably still being done) in our torture camps. Old patterns of thought and emotion like this do not die out easily. They have been passed along through the generations of fundamentalist Christianity, as these self-rightous people collectively project their worst fears onto the "apocalyptic other." I sense that these projections have been turned on their heads. Falsely projecting fears onto an apocalyptic other for hundreds of generations has trasformed these fundamentalists into the very projections that they fear most. Somehow, in the horror that is Abu Ghraib, a profound truth about human nature is being revealed to the collective consciousness. You are the devil you make. My point, a small one to be sure, was just noticing that come this November election it is there again--just where it was when Clinton was elected Govenor and then again 12 years later when he was elected President. It is there again this fall--right on his Asc, which is powerfully aspected by conjunction with Mars and Neptune. What might this mean? Yes, his book came out and is doing well. But that is now and Jupiter is not there now. It just makes me think that perhaps we haven't heard the last from this one. Garry, wow. That Madsen article makes a lot of sense. There is a big HOWEVER, though. Madsen should have included a number 5 on the list: the Dems need to begin a campaign to educate and warn voters in all states of this danger and instruct them to vote either absentee or early without fail (for all voters in states that allow such early voting as does Texas)so they won't be deterred in casting their vote should these crooks try something like this. Obviously, even those methods of casting a vote are not necessarily tamperproof. I'm just sorry I live in Texas where my vote won't help the Kerry-Edwards team. Posted by: Susan on July 15, 2004 05:42 PMAfter reading the article that Garry linked to, it occured to me that one of the Astrologers here (perhaps Nancy?) mentioned that there was a strong possibility that Schwarzenegger (sp?) could be Recalled by 2006. Could someone confirm or deny this recollection? If the scenario Garry's linked article plays out, then I could easily see the Gov of California being yanked out of there ... as well as the whole country in a political turmoil we haven't seen since the Civil War. Which makes me think of other astrological thoughts about the next several years in this Country made by astrologers on this site. Hmmmmmmm ... A gubernatorial election is taking place in the background of all the adventures of George "Ulysses" Clooney in the Deep South USA in the early part of the last century. One of the campaigners has as his prop a broom. He is going to "clean house" once he's elected governor. Well, Ahhhhhnold used the same prop during his election. I fell on the floor laughing when that photo appeared in the paper. Yessiree, he was going to take care of all the waste, waste, waste in California. He was going to "clean house" when he got to Sacramento. (Among his advisors is one Pete Wilson, a Repug who had many merry adventures with the Legislature himself during his miserable years in Sacto.) We are now 15 days into the new CA fiscal year and there is no end in sight for the budget deadlock. Ahhhhhnold cannot figure out how the heck to pay all the bills without putting us into hock for the next 20 - 30 years, there being no money available to pay for the mess his buddy Ken Lay, et al., got us into by socking it to us a couple of years ago during the "Energy Crisis". Posted by: Pat C on July 16, 2004 11:17 PMIsabelle, My husband & I had a good laugh over the letter to Bush. In synagogue, a different portion of the Old Testament is read each week. On one hand, many of the tenents are good, ethical, uplifting. They feel good and right. However, there is so much there that I don't relate to and don't know how to process! It is a paradox: the ancient religions have so much beauty and are steeped in age and wisdom - but so much is obsolete or primative, like the age in which they were formed. How do we separate the obsolete stuff from the stuff that has merit without altering the intergrity or confusing people? Also, it is interesting how certain elements are conveniently pointed to as the "truth" while other elements are ignored as the obsolete and/or brutal practices that they are. It's a dilema. Nancy, has anyone analyzed Theresa Kerry's chart? * Daily [enron] Reality Check ;O) Slow News Day 7/16/2004 ... Sats are traditionally the slowest news day of the wk by far. Knowing that the Sat paper is the least read newspaper of the wk, & that Sat's newscasts tend to have the lowest audiences, people in the PR business always tell their clients not to do press confs, or release big reports, on a Fri. Reading my Wash Post Sat morning, 7/10, was a rather startling break with that usual pattern. Beginning with the big, top of the fold front page headline, "Panel Condemns Iraq Prewar Intelligence," you got one interesting headline after the next: "Rhetoric on Values Turns Personal," "NRA/Outdoor Writers Have Falling-Out," "bush's War-Era Records Damaged," "New Plan Ordered for Yucca Mt," "bush Criticizes NAACP's Leadership," "Dean/Nader Trade Barbs in Debate Over Election Roles." For anyone interested in prez politics, that's a huge amt to chew on for a wk, let alone a sleepy summer Sat morn. So let me get this meal started: The implications of the intelligence panel's findings are staggering. For a repub-controlled Congressional committee to come out with a report this critical of the bush [regime]'s rationale for war & intelligence apparatus in July of an election yr is stunning. Even tho repub Committee Chair Pat Roberts did his best to cover the tracks of the WH by saying there was no proof that [regime] officials attempted to pressure intelligence analysts, & by trying to pin most of the blame on the CIA, the bottom line conclusions of the report are devastating to the WH: both the WMD rationale & the Osama/Saddam link rationale were dismissed in no uncertain terms by the panel. Where exactly do bush/cheney go from here? The 9/11 commission & the Senate panel report – both chaired by repubs--have conclusively stated that there is no connection between 9/11 & Hussein. And even if you say the bad intelligence is all the CIA's fault, it's still bush's CIA. This repub-controlled committee report is the most devastating blow so far in terms of judgment about the bush [regime]'s honesty/competence on Iraq. ... http://www.americanfamilyvoices.org/projects/DailyRealityCheck.asp?ID=186 Posted by: on July 17, 2004 02:23 AMImportant read: the more of us that know, the worse it is for beelzebush... ;O) * Terrorism and the Election: California is the Target! With the revelations of child prisoners and torture moving above the awareness-horizon, we now see truth revealed; this war is being prosecuted by ignorant, vile, crack heads. We're troubled but now we have no choice, this is the final straw. 'Whoever has ears should hear' applies not just to the select few but to everyone. As the stories, interviews, and pictures of this unfathomable behavior spread, there will be a public movement in this country that won't stop until justice prevails. I say this without any hesitation or doubt. Posted by: mike on July 17, 2004 07:13 AMmike, i loved the way you said that! i feel it! i believe it! no doubt. Posted by: rubaiat on July 17, 2004 07:45 AMThank you, Mike. Posted by: JoannaOregon on July 17, 2004 09:46 AMI guess religion (Pluto in Sag) is on everyone's minds these days, thanks to the aforementioned aspect. Here's a good take again on the fundamentalism some people (Bush & co.) expound on. July 17, 2004 "Jesus merely raised one hand a few inches and a yawning chasm opened in the earth, stretching far and wide enough to swallow all of them. They tumbled in, howling and screeching, but their wailing was soon quashed and all was silent when the earth closed itself again." These are the best-selling novels for adults in the United States, and they have sold more than 60 million copies worldwide. The latest is "Glorious Appearing," which has Jesus returning to Earth to wipe all non-Christians from the planet. It's disconcerting to find ethnic cleansing celebrated as the height of piety. If a Muslim were to write an Islamic version of "Glorious Appearing" and publish it in Saudi Arabia, jubilantly describing a massacre of millions of non-Muslims by God, we would have a fit. We have quite properly linked the fundamentalist religious tracts of Islam with the intolerance they nurture, and it's time to remove the motes from our own eyes. In "Glorious Appearing," Jesus merely speaks and the bodies of the enemy are ripped open. Christians have to drive carefully to avoid "hitting splayed and filleted bodies of men and women and horses." "The riders not thrown," the novel continues, "leaped from their horses and tried to control them with the reins, but even as they struggled, their own flesh dissolved, their eyes melted and their tongues disintegrated. . . . Seconds later the same plague afflicted the horses, their flesh and eyes and tongues melting away, leaving grotesque skeletons standing, before they, too, rattled to the pavement." One might have thought that Jesus would be more of an animal lover. These scenes also raise an eschatological problem: Could devout fundamentalists really enjoy paradise as their friends, relatives and neighbors were heaved into hell? As my Times colleague David Kirkpatrick noted in an article, this portrayal of a bloody Second Coming reflects a shift in American portrayals of Jesus, from a gentle Mister Rogers figure to a martial messiah presiding over a sea of blood. Militant Christianity rises to confront Militant Islam. This matters in the real world, in the same way that fundamentalist Islamic tracts in Saudi Arabia do. Each form of fundamentalism creates a stark moral division between decent, pious types like oneself — and infidels headed for hell. No, I don't think the readers of "Glorious Appearing" will ram planes into buildings. But we did imprison thousands of Muslims here and abroad after 9/11, and ordinary Americans joined in the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib in part because of a lack of empathy for the prisoners. It's harder to feel empathy for such people if we regard them as infidels and expect Jesus to dissolve their tongues and eyes any day now. I had reservations about writing this column because I don't want to mock anyone's religious beliefs, and millions of Americans think "Glorious Appearing" describes God's will. Yet ultimately I think it's a mistake to treat religion as a taboo, either in this country or in Saudi Arabia. I often write about religion precisely because faith has a vast impact on society. Since I've praised the work that evangelicals do in the third world (Christian aid groups are being particularly helpful in Sudan, at a time when most of the world has done nothing about the genocide there), I also feel a responsibility to protest intolerance at home. Should we really give intolerance a pass if it is rooted in religious faith? Many American Christians once read the Bible to mean that African-Americans were cursed as descendants of Noah's son Ham, and were intended by God to be enslaved. In the 19th century, millions of Americans sincerely accepted this Biblical justification for slavery as God's word — but surely it would have been wrong to defer to such racist nonsense simply because speaking out could have been perceived as denigrating some people's religious faith. People have the right to believe in a racist God, or a God who throws millions of nonevangelicals into hell. I don't think we should ban books that say that. But we should be embarrassed when our best-selling books gleefully celebrate religious intolerance and violence against infidels. That's not what America stands for, and I doubt that it's what God stands for.
