At this time, transiting Neptune is conjunct the Pluto in the Constitution chart. Transiting Pluto is moving toward a square with the Sun and an opposition to Jupiter. These aspects, continuing throughout 2005, may be the greatest challenges to our constitutional system of government and our rights to due process and a fair trial since we first became a nation. Neptune tends to confuse issues, and often disguises dubious hidden motives. Pluto threatens destruction of the very foundation of whatever entity it contacts. Keep in mind that one of the greatest powers a President of the U.S.A. has is to appoint Justices to the Supreme Court and other Federal Judges. The Congress has the right of approval, and is currently controlled by the Republicans. The current Court is controlled by Conservatives. This is one of the many reasons we need to vote very carefully in November. At the present time, it seems any one of us could be "detained", accused of being involved with terrorists, and held indefinitely, with no rules about being officially accused of anything, our right to a lawyer or a trial. This is very very scary! I seem to have heard something growing up in America about "liberty and justice for all". Is this concept becoming a distant memory? The Economy: Take your profits this month. Starting around the middle of August through the end of September, there may be a significant sell off in the market, especially in the tech sector that looks so good this month. Another sector that will look better this month are the employment figures. It will seem that unemployment is decreasing, even though much of the workforce continues to be "outsourced" to overseas cheap labor. What will surprise people is that starting the middle of August through late September, there will be a startlingly large number of corporate layoffs and downsizing. There has been a concerted attempt to control oil inflation recently that is doomed to fluctuate out of control. We are decidedly in an oil and gas inflation era now. This will escalate into an energy Armageddon that will hit the world around 2010 if we do not make a gigantic effort to switch to solar, windmill and fuel cell technologies immediately. In recent months, China and Japan have been engaged in a diplomatic battle over access to the giant oil fields in Siberia. The Japanese are dependant entirely on foreign oil, and are lobbying Russia for a 2300-mile pipeline from Siberia to coastal Japan. Fast-growing China, how the world’s second largest oil user after the U.S.A. sees Russian oil as vital for its own "energy security" and is pushing for a 1400 mile pipeline south to Daqing. The rivalry between these two nations is escalating. I have stated in past newsletters that China’s chart and Russia’s chart get hit by the great cardinal T-square in 2010 possibly taking them into an oil war! As long as the present administration is in Washington, the probability of our moving away from fossil fuels is somewhere between remote and impossible. It is up to each and every one of us to promote the new renewable technologies. Weather and Travel: I do not like travel in the 16th or the 25th. Venus just went direct in Gemini and is in the sign until August 7th. In spite of the constant anxiety about terrorists, people will be in the mood to travel and any vacation at all is a mood enhancer! Politics and International Events: With Mars in Leo opposing Neptune in Aquarius in the new moon chart this month, confusion will be rampant. This configuration highlights problems in nations throughout the Mideast, especially Israel. The recent decisions by the Sharon administration concerning Palestinian territory will, once again, run into trouble. The Saudi Arabian government is struggling from within, and their astrological chart will get hit heavily by Saturn in the Fall. Another chart to get hit by the Neptune/Mars is No. Korea. We have recently made them an offer of energy availability in return for their nuclear disarmament. There will be deception and confusion around this issue at this time. Interestingly, both the charts of the full moon July 2nd and the new moon, July 17th set for Washington, D.C. resemble the chart of Pres. Bush. He is heavily under fire this month, but will tend to be quite aggressive and continue to raise copious amounts of cash for his campaign. He needs to "beef up" his security between now and September. Senator Kerry will likely become more outgoing this month and should make a good impression at the Democratic Convention. Mars in Leo harmonizes with his chart and energizes his campaign, which has been overly low-key in the past couple of months. He will announce his running-mate, whose chart I will evaluate next month when we know who he (she) is. Final Thoughts: At the same time, one of the best weapons against anger and anxiety is a sense of humor. The old saying: "Life is too serious to be taken seriously", is appropriate to the times in which we are living. The longer I live, the more life seems like "the theater of the absurd". Who said any of this has to make any sense? Stay tuned! Linda Linda L. Schurman "There are more things in Heaven and Earth, Horatio, (Hamlet 1,5)

Sally, thank you for sharing the perspective of Ms. Schurman; her views are enlightening, especially her economic ones. After all, Bush and his media cohorts have been trumpeting the "wonderful, robust" economy that they hope will reland them in the WH. Posted by: Janet on July 5, 2004 05:01 PMSally, I appreciate your sharing the viewpoints of Linda Schurman, as well as her very basic but helpful astrological insights. (The travel advice was helpful to me as I am traveling at that time as was the stock market advice as I've been deliberating about the 2 stocks I own for a few years now :-) This paragraph in particular is a succint description of the threats adherent in the governmental power balance at this time: "Keep in mind that one of the greatest powers a President of the U.S.A. has is to appoint Justices to the Supreme Court and other Federal Judges. This is very very scary." I am going to email it to all 30+ people on my list as another reason to vote wisely this Nov. Many people are confused by all they're hearing these days and are wary of the sense of urgency us anti-Bushers express. At a family gathering yesterday, my cousin's grandson told her to vote for Kerry because Bush lies. Her answer was "they all do." Her tone told me I'd be wasting time trying to reason with her. Besides, she already knows how I feel since I regularly send "persuasive" political email out. Finally, a sense of humor is great idea. Although I have a serious bent, mine does surface, especially with the encouragement of my playful husband. I wish I could think of some jokes right now but I'm in one of my "serious" moods. I'd like to say something to Jo. Jo, with all due respect, I appreciate your feelings and I'm glad you explained them a little further in your response to Pallas 18 in the last article). I understand the U.S. has an interest in and is influenced by Israel. I don't experience, though, that you perceive that there is good reason for this, although you may. And the article you posted, seems particularly skewed. As to Ralph Nader's suggestion that the U.S. is Irael's puppet? Well that is about as reasonable and sensible as his decision to run for president this time around. Posted by: Sharon Katz on July 5, 2004 06:33 PMThis is one the Constitution seems to have won: "The Year Rehnquist May Have Lost His Court" "This year, there was every reason to suppose the chief justice would want to shape the court's response to the war on terrorism. His 1998 book on the history of civil liberties in wartime reflected his extensive knowledge and evident fascination with the subject by which the term, if not his entire tenure, was likely to be known. If there was a message to be delivered from one branch of government to another, Chief Justice Rehnquist figured to be the one to deliver it. Yet the Guantánamo case found him silently joining Justice Antonin Scalia's dissenting opinion as Justice John Paul Stevens explained for the 6-to-3 majority why the federal courts have jurisdiction to review the status of the hundreds of foreigners detained there. " Jo, your comments regarding Israel are well taken, you are not the only person to have noticed that the US is too involved in Israel and more that a little one-sided, maybe it's because Israel's Venus conjoins the US Jupiter and we just love the country. There have been several middle eastern journalists and historians who have suggested that the Iraq War was at the urging of the Sharon government and those who support him. I even know a couple of Israelies who believe the Sharon government had something to do with this war. Yes I think oil was a big factor but I also think there is much none of us know and all of us try to add our two cents based on partial or dubious information. I think there might have been a variety of factors and we may never know for decades to come who all the players or countries or reasons involved.
Word has it on DU that the Kerry campaign has scheduled a press conference tomorrow at 9 a.m. and that the Kerry campaign has also scheduled a press conference at 10 a.m. for...Wes Clarke. However the same person who posted that conjectured that this could be to throw off the media. I wait in suspense to receive the email from the Kerry campaign as subscribers have been promised to receive first notice. I think Clarke would be an awesome choice...and the right one! Yet, I could also live with Gephardt or Edwards. Apparently Kerry spent some time with Vilsach yesterday :-) Pallas, Jo, I have some further questions and thoughts on the Israel-Mideast-U.S. situation. It might be more appropriate to discuss this in separate email. What do bothof you think? Posted by: Sharon Katz on July 5, 2004 07:23 PMA DEAR FRIEND AND READER SENT THIS TO ME TODAY, IT'S AN AWESOME SPEECH AND VERY TIMELY.
Dear Friends,
Stanford University June 12, 2004 Terry Karl Gildred Professor of Latin American Studies and Professor of Political Science President Hennessey, Provost Etchemendy, Trustees, parents, and most especially graduates, thank you for the honor of inviting me to speak to you. In the midst of your celebration, I ask you to pause -- for these are serious times. Archbishop Desmond Tutu, anti-apartheid hero and head ofSouth Africa's Truth and Reconciliation Commission, tells a story (which inspired this talk) about a farmer who raised chickens in his backyard. Amongst this farmer's chickens, there was one that looked a little odd. It behaved like a chicken. It walked like a chicken. It pecked away like a chicken. One day a wise woman came along and said to the farmer: "You know, that isn't a chicken. It is an eagle." The farmer said: "No way. That is a chicken." And he looked at the odd bird and said: "Don't get any fancy ideas. You are a chicken." "I don't think so," said the wise woman. She picked up the strange looking chicken, climbed up the nearest mountain, stood at the edge of a precipice, and waited until sunrise. Then she turned the bird towards the sun and said: "You are an eagle. You can soar. You can change your world. Go fly." The strange looking chicken shook itself and tentatively spread its wings. It looked up at the sky. It looked down -- way down -- to the bottom of the precipice. It took a few steps back in the direction of the other chickens, where it had been so comfortable, where it had a daily routine and food to eat. "Sorry," it said to the wise woman: "I don't feel like an eagle. I feel like a chicken. And I don't think I can fly." "That's your choice," the wise woman said softly. "But remember, you are responsible for the decisions you make. If you don't dare to fly, you will never be fully alive. You will never reach the sky. Even if you feel like a chicken, fly like an eagle." That "strange chicken" comes to mind every time there is a choice between taking an easy path or making a trail where there is no road. After completing my doctorate at Stanford, I conducted research in El Salvador's civil war in the 1980s. Military leaders repeatedly assured me that their army did not commit human rights abuses. But the testimony of countless others told a different story. Salvadorans described how they had been hooded or blindfolded for days; deprived of sleep, food, and water; beaten and shocked; raped and forced to watch the torture and murder of others. At El Mozote, a massacre site where a forensic team would later dig up the bodies of over 100 children under the age of 12, a peasant woman approached me. "You are American. You are powerful. You will find out who is responsible for this." That night, flying back to the United States, I railed against that woman. "Powerful? A general is powerful. A president is powerful. I am five feet tall. I am a woman from Missouri. I don't have tenure. I am not powerful." Now, fast forward two decades to a South Floridacourtroom, in June 2002, where two Salvadoran generals living in the U.S., Generals Jose Guillermo Garcia and Eugenio Vides Casanova, stood on trial, charged with responsibility as their country's top commanders for the abuse of Salvadoran civilians. Three survivors of torture brought the courtroom to tears as they testified about what had happened to them. One of them, Carlos Mauricio, honors us with his presence today. As the expert witness in this trial - a trial that few believed would ever take place and even fewer believed could be won -- I documented how the actions these generals had taken (and the actions that they had failed to take) were interpreted down the chain of command as a "green light" to commit torture. Thus these men should be held responsible for crimes committed against Salvadoran civilians. In their defense, the generals denied their responsibility. They were fighting terrorism. They could not be expected to control the actions of all their soldiers. They were not present when prisoners were humiliated, abused and murdered, and they were not the actual torturers. So why, they asked the jury, were they on trial for what a few "bad apples" had done? Because the law demands it. The doctrine of "command responsibility," the product of an American initiative enshrined in law since the Nuremberg Statutes after World War II, affirms that civilian and military leaders may be held legally accountable for abuses committed by their subordinates -- even when these commanders did not personally order abuses, witness such abuses, have direct knowledge about them or conspire to commit them. This law recognizes the tremendous danger of abuse inherent in war and, in tribute to the awful sacrifices of the Holocaust and those who died in two world wars, it places the moral worth of each and every person at the center of our international order. Rather than permit leaders to turn a blind eye to abuse, it charges both military and civilian authorities with an affirmativeduty to prevent crimes, to control their troops, to act when a crime is discovered, and to punish those found guilty of committing the actual crime - no matter how high responsibility may reach in the chain of command. Thus, a Florida jury found these once powerful Salvadoran generals responsible for gross human rights abuses. In an historic and precedent-setting ruling, a jury of ordinary people reaffirmed the doctrine of command responsibility in an American court. Their verdict, covered in every major newspaper and widely televised around the world, sent a powerful signal. It warned murderers, torturers and dictators to think twice before retiring to the United States. And it demonstrated that, at our best, America's freedoms and the energies of people like our lawyers, researchers, translators - people just like you -- can be harnessed to transcend national borders and to hold even the most powerful to account for their actions against the vulnerable. Which brings me back to the precipice where we left the strange chicken. Our country is at the edge of a precipice. Regardless of how the situation in Iraq finally plays itself out, we are in the midst of one of the greatest and most intractable global crises of modern times. 9/11 was an earthquake in the psyche of America, and flying airplanes into buildings where people work is a crime against humanity. But the behavior depicted in the terrible photos of the hooded Iraqi led around on a leash and the 37 homicides of prisoners in U.S.detention now under investigation are also criminal acts. While the numbers may not be the same and the circumstances are different, U.S. law and international law are clear: both are crimes against humanity. The simple truth, whether we like to hear it or not, is that since the attacks of September 11, 2001, officials of the United States, from Afghanistan to Guantanamo to Iraq, have been torturing prisoners. They have done this with the institutional approval of the U.S. government advised by memoranda from the President's own counsel, with official declarations aimed at side-stepping the historic safeguards of the Geneva Conventions, and with actual written policies permitting the use of "moderate physical force" - policies that violate rulings by our courts, the European Court of Human Rights, the Inter-American Court, and the Supreme Court of Israel. By the military's own calculation, an estimated 80 percent of prisoners subjected to this treatment are innocent of any wrongdoing. No amount of military power will make up for what we lose if the world at large believes that, despite our years of rhetorical support for rights and democracy, we are prepared to compromise them the moment our own lives become threatened. The dreadful story told by these photographs (and we have not seen the worst of them) has done enormous damage to our moral standing, our strategic power, and our spirit. Today much of the world believes that there is a difference between what Americans claim to stand for and what we actually do in the world. According to a 19 nation poll released last week, a majority now thinks that the United States is having a negative influence on the world; only 37 percent judge our country as having a "positive influence." Listen to the countries polled: Canada, Chile, China, France, Germany, Great Britain, Brazil, India, Indonesia, Mexico, Nigeria, Russia, South Africa, Spain, Turkey, Uruguay and Italy -- and yes, the United States itself. This is an enormous change from the days after September 11 when a French newspaper proclaimed: "We are all Americans." Today, we stand more alone in the world than we ever have. This decline in our reputation is a decline in our security. We live "unavoidably side by side, " Kant said two hundred years ago. But even this great philosopher could not have imagined how enmeshed nations and peoples have become today. Thus what happens in one part of the world -- the dramatic increase in poverty and inequality, the failure to address the terrible consequences of global warming, the catastrophe of AIDS, the nineteen civil wars currently active, the persistence of oil-related crises mixed to dangerous combustion with religious or ethnic conflict in Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Chad and Indonesia -- these will blow back on us. Global problems, no matter how remote they appear, will increasingly affect everything in our daily lives -- from the imperative transition from a fossil fuel energy system (which will happen in our lifetime), to the air we breathe, to the diseases we face, to the safety of the cities we inhabit. These problems cannot be solved with military might alone. They cannot be solved within our borders. And they cannot be solved without friends. Thus we must address the damage that has been done in our name - no matter how far up the chain of command this requires. For our spirit and our security, we must demonstrate that we are a nation of law, democracy, and decency. We must show the world that we will apply, at the very least, the same standards to our own leaders as we have to Salvadoran generals. Which brings me to you - the "strange birds "of 2004. This is your precipice. What will you do about it? What will you do to awaken in yourselves and others a new sense of responsibility for our country and for this world? How will you fight to make your leaders conduct themselves as if they were going to live on this earth forever and be held accountable for its condition? The question is not whether you will be chickens or eagles. You have no choice. You are living in the most powerful country in the world. You are graduating from one of the best universities in the world. Tomorrow you will hold a certificate that does much to ensure your place among the most fortunate of this world. But just as that Salvadoran woman in El Mozote once put it to me, I shall put it to you: You are eagles. The choice you face is whether you will dare to fly. Survey data on your generation as a whole is not very promising. It says that you are primarily interested in acquisition, that you define yourself in terms of possessions rather than "goods of the soul." You are self-interested and care little for developing a moral code, much less for assuming some type of global political responsibility. You do not want to be eagles at all, we are told, but rather successful chickens in a very well ordered barnyard. At Stanford our experience is different. Here students work on women's health in Afghanistan and Chiapas, democracy in China and Kyrgyzstan, and war crimes in Rwanda the Hague. Students build schools in Central America, assist AIDS orphans in South Africa, develop medicines for low income countries, test development strategies, provide education programs for inner-city kids, create a journal to promote human rights and volunteer in virtually every community service organization imaginable. Yet some of these very same students are reluctant to show that they are not simply hard-nosed realists or self-interested balancers of costs and benefits. It is almost as if they hear whispering in their ears the German poet Holderlin, who wrote around 1800 an essay entitled Good Advice. Listen to advice: "If you have brains and a heart, show only one or the other. You will not get credit for either should you show both at once." This isn't good advice at all. Your university years have been defined by two distinct crimes against humanity - September 11 and torture in Iraq. Whatever their differences (and they are different), the lesson from these two crimes is the same: our own security is intimately bound up with our ability to use both our hearts and our brains, to empathize as well as analyze. Crimes like 9/11 or the torture of Iraqi prisoners can only occur when the victims are defined as something less than human; they can only be portrayed as permissible when all lives are not valued equally. Their prevention rests on our capacity to affirm the principles of equal respect, and to expand, not contract, human rights protections both at home and abroad. Being an eagle means becoming citizens who are not simply Americans but who are citizens of this earth. It means raising, not lowering, the bar. We are at a turning point. For all of you who feel helpless, who despair, who are cynical and who do not feel like eagles, remember this. "There are only two kinds of people who tell you that you cannot change the world: those who are afraid to try themselves, and more importantly, those who are afraid that you may succeed." Instead, think of Margaret Mead's well-known phrase: "Never say that the actions of one, two or three ordinary people cannot change the world. It is the only thing that does." Think of Carlos Mauricio, who faced down an abuser. Think of all those people who give a piece of themselves every day, who speak out against the brutality they see, who try to stop impoverishment and the despoiling of our environment, and who understand that ultimately the world cannot be peaceful if some have far too much and others far too little. Take inspiration from these eagles. Shake yourselves, spread your wings and lift off. Whether you run a business or a community organization, a clinic or a school, assume responsibility for the long-range prospects of our country and our troubled earth. Aim high for a world without war and without genocide, a world of respect for all, a world that is far greater than the one we are handing to you. Because, as Eleanor Roosevelt said, "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams." Congratulations, and may you fly!
Sally, thanks for the article by Ms. Schurman. An old adage says; that every human institution contains within itself the seeds for it's own destruction. After 200+ years, is this again the time of America's downward spiral? As it seems in generations past, the Founder's checks and balances have managed to kick in, to stave off destruction. But now we see one Party, one idealouge, one foreign policy; that is stiffiling debate, reform, change. And this neo-con machine has done it's best to position itself to continue to do so for years to come. (By controlling all the Branches of Governement) Yes this Novemeber, our vote, will be crucial. It would seem in times past, America has taken a break to catch it's breath. For the period of a term or two, of a new Commander in Chief. But then once again the downward spiral begins anew. Another War, another erosion of Civil Liberties, another Campaign, but yet the light of Hope continues to flicker. May the Light continue to shine. Posted by: jamsmitty on July 5, 2004 07:52 PMJo You are right on! Our relationship with Israel and more importantly its power with us is overboard. When over 65% of our Congress state that "we are all Likkud now!" you know something Let's stop sending billions to Israel to build a Sally, Sharon K., thank you, but I will pass on the email discussion. Anything I have to contribute on the mundane and astrology I will post directly to the board. I have lived all of my life as a minority voice in a choir of opposing singers. A white woman born in the South, I have defended people of color all my life and been forced to deal with anger from my family, friends and neighbors. As an adult I turned my back on the protestant faith I was reared in, to embrace a path without form... that defies labels. As an elected official I exposed a gyn/OB who was forcing women on medicaid to undergo a tubal ligation immediately after the delivery of their child. I have had crosses burned in my yard by the KKK. I am not a bigot, I am not anti-Semetic... but I must bite my tongue when interacting with my immediate family who for the most part are rapture ready... with a faint thread of bigotry running through the family tapestry... and big supporters of Dubya. Again, I must bite my tongue when interacting with my neighbors who are also ready to ascend. My adopted daughter was born on the day Roe v. Wade passed... I am pro-choice. Gemini, the rebel of the zodiac rules my nSun and Uranus rules my chart... nMoon in Libra... so, freedom and justice are important to this entity. As they are to all who post here. Everytime someone slams this administration, they in fact slam this country. That's okay with me if that's what it takes to get it on the right track. More than 1/2 the people in the country believe we are on the wrong track. Europeans came to this country, pushed the inhabitants aside, took the land and used inhabitants from another country to run the plantations which grew wealth for the white man. Early on the need for security of the white man was used as the basis for expulsion of the Indian. Some see the ME as sort of a mirror of the Wild West of America. As a collective we have much karma to reap for our past deeds. And like the "birds" referred to in the post by Sally, we can continue to behave as we have in the past, and support those who advocate war and violence as a solution to our problems, or we can look at the problems and endeavor to find other solutions. Part of that endeavor is examining the actions of all parties, not just those that cause us the least discomfort. If we're going to fly, my money's on the eagles... chickens can't make the grade. Posted by: Jo on July 5, 2004 08:32 PM There are many valid point of views expressed on this website. I choose to believe that none of them are meant to inflict harm or express biase, prejudice or anti-semitism, but are meant to add further pieces of truth to the picture. I did some web research and came up with a scholarly, footnoted article at: Put out by an Israeli think tank, it presents a thoughtful, documented view of how Israel is effected by the Iraq invasion. The author is Dr. Dore Gold, author, scholar, and former Ambassador to the U.N.(www.jcpa.org/dgold.htm). Chief among his assertions is the fact that Israel did not consider Iraq a primary threat (but possibly a secondary or tertiary one) because 1) Iraq is not adjacent to Israel as is Syria, a known supporter of terrorism whose missle arsenal was 10 times that of Iraq; 2) Iraq in the past has never posed a real threat to Israel, but has threatened its own populace (the Kurds) and other Mideast countries; and 3) the Iraqui army and military equipment have been so reduced as to have lost most of its potency. Israel's nemesis, however, is Iran and the article explains why. It also explains that the "Neocons" do not have a uniform position in regard to Israel, and, in fact, Perle has proposed that a Palestinian state be created with it's capital "in part of Jerusalem," surely not the position of a true Neocon. It's invaluable and even life saving that the internet allows for the free expression of political opinions. However, as many of us realize and Salley suggested, many of our opinions are not based on complete information. I, therefore, present this article to add to the big picture, since a little knowledge can be a dangerous thing. Posted by: Sharon Katz on July 5, 2004 09:19 PM
http://www.haaretz.com/hasen/objects/pages/PrintArticleEn.jhtml?itemNo=447265 Posted by: wv on July 5, 2004 10:17 PMThanks for sharing all of that, Jo. You are very brave and have truly made the world a better place. It sounds like you have benefited many at the risk of your own safety. It is important to care about and take the part of the underdog. Although the Palestinian people are underdogs, I think the Arab world, Hamas, and Arafat have a lot invested in keeping that the status quo. Otherwise, they would have shown themselves to be partners in peace, Arafat may not have rejected the 1999 peace accord (which Clinton feels he regrets), and funds would not have been channeled to the Arafat bank account in Paris. Apparently a lot of aid has been given to the Palestinians on a monthly basis and much of it seems to end up in weapons and explosives. I think good Palestinian leaders would mobilize the populace to use economic boycotting, non-violent protest, education and business development to accomplish their objectives. However, the terrorists/Arafat will not allow that to happen. I don't claim to see the whole picture but this is my belief. I also believe that the strategy was to provoke and terrorist the beast, the giant, until it struck back and the world could call it a bully. Speaking of Sunday shows, did anyone see that hilarious CNN Unreliable Sources show this morning? It's hosted by this knucklehead from the Washington Post who's been raggin' on me since "Roger & Me." I wasn't half awake while it was on but I think he had some blow-hards on who said, in no particular order of priority, that I was in cahoots with the Taliban, supported Al Qaeda, and dreamed of a day gone by when Uncle Saddam brought peace and joy to the world. This thing was so whacked, and they were trying so hard to repeat Karl Rove's talking points, I thought, "Damn -- the box office from last night must have busted through the roof if these guys are that pissed!" So I immediately called up the studio and, sure enough, in just our second weekend, "F9/11" had shot past $50 million! Whoa! More than double what it was last Sunday! No wonder foam is coming out of these guys' mouths! I turned it off and picked up the paper. It was so funny, cause the last thing they were blabbing on about was how dare I -- HOW DARE HE! -- imply that all the loot the Saudi royals and bin Ladens have invested in the businesses of the Bush inner circle would have anything -- ANYTHING -- to do with them getting special treatment after 9/11. And then, there was today's top headline story in the NY Times -- about how five Saudi suspected terrorists in Guantanamo were given back to the Saudis in exchange for 5 Brits the Saudis were holding (and possibly torturing). So, if you are currently incarcerated in Gitmo and reading this, there's your ticket out -- just prove you are a Saudi! When is the real discussion going to begin? If the White House has its way, the CNNs of this country will just keep attacking me with wild-ass claims about how I am in cahoots with Martians or something . And I've NEVER even released a suspected Saudi terrorist! I just made a movie! Geez... Time to head back outside to watch the rest of the fireworks... More later... could someone post the url to MM's blog? Political Wire has posted that they have it from three sources that it will be Gephardt. Mr. Gephardt was the first to publicly call Bush a "miserable failure". Guess Kerry likes his chutzpah! Who knows! As for Clark....Gee, that would be great but I think that the Nominee and his VP choice are usually in the same city at the time of the announcement. Isn't Kerry scheculed to be elsewhere tomorrow? I hope the sources are wrong....I think Gephardt is just a tired old soldier. It would have more of the feel of satisfying the party obligations to the Union bosses rather than choosing a running mate who could bring the juice necessary to get the country's blood moving. Oh well....c'est la vie! Anne Posted by: on July 6, 2004 12:20 AMVP choice? Probably not Gep or Edwards; historically, the VP nominee is usually someone whose name doesn't even appear on the 'short list'. A woman and/or a person of color is long overdue. Nancy Pelosi or Carol M Braun look good to me... Sam Nunn would be a good choice if the Kerry camp believes a white male is the only game in town... I'm sure many of you could name a number of really great candidates... Josh Marshall at TPM has a comment on irrelevance of the 'list'... http://www.talkingpointsmemo.com Posted by: Jo on July 6, 2004 01:03 AMJo, regarding your post above which speaks about a path...without form, I absolutely love the beauty in which you wrote. http://reese.king-online.com/Reese_20040630/index.php Posted by: wv on July 6, 2004 02:40 AMA couple of thoughts (one brief; one bloviatious) first, maya del mar has a wonderful site but i take her predictions with a grain of salt. a california expatriate, i was most interested in the recall race. she came out fore square saying it would be cruz bustamonte 'because he does things right'. shortly thereafter, cruz baby took a couple of million from the indian gambling interests in ca and dropped like a rock. second, some time ago on this forum, i suggested that focusing on the neocons was a waste of time and also played into the hands of extremist elements who use the neocons to flog the anti jewish agenda (you're not anti jewish if you criticize the neocons, you're potentially in a bad neighborhood filled with holocaust deniers etc.). i was castigated and told i was 'high jacking' the discussion, blablabla. i avoided the forum for a couple of months until my spirit guide appeared for the first time, guido, and said 'knock it off.' at the risk of irritating people, let me suggest the following: the neocons are truly offensive --intellectually effete and supercilious, given far too much power for bankrupt ideas. these same neocons share an agenda with *some* in the israeli political milieu. the neocons, however, are the mandarins, the hoplites for the powers that be -- the people behind bush who represent the real money and power in this country. they thought, hey, lets get some oil; bush has a plan, let’s see if it works. the role of the neocons was not germinal; rather, it was parallel and then subservient. how conveeenient that when things go south, the powers that be have two barriers to keep their anonymity; the neocons, and george w. these are the same forces that got fed up with nixon when he was no longer rational and who are quickly showing their distaste for the inefficiencies of bush and his henchmen. fighting over the neocons now is like criticizing the floor traders for the stock crash that started the great depression. they are employees, servants who can be hired or fired at the will of their masters. plausible deniability is the theme of the powers that be -- gee it wasn't us, it was [insert name here: nixon, bush, neocons, cheney]. and the best goes on. we'll serve up a new guy/gal who will fix everything for you, the people…the same people who invariably fall for the side show that blocks the truth; namely that the powers that be consist of aggregated capital and power, served by their confidential and public mandarins…they have no permanent friends or permanent enemies, just permanent interests. everybody is expendible. Hello everybody. Methinks Kerry is planning to anounce his VP pick on Tuesday (tomorrow) morning. I don't care to speculate who it's going to be because the VP pick is almost always somebody out of left field. After all, it's usually somebody we've never (or seldom) heard of. I wish he consulted an astrologer on the matter, but doubt that he did. I hope the astrologers will do commentary on the chart of the VP pick. Nighty night. Dave Posted by: Dave on July 6, 2004 04:33 AMlinda-- interesting predictions though it appears everyone seems to be able to conjur these days--where is the astrology to back them up??????? Posted by: w on July 6, 2004 04:40 AMMost interesting discussion going on at DU. The thread is so huge it is now in "Part 2". Title: "If and When Indictments Come Down in the Plame Case. . . " A Pallas participates, I assume the same who posts here. The thread is very lengthy, even when split into two parts. You might first concentrate on the entries by "H2O Man." He is quite knowledgeable. I wonder if he's not the author of "The Black Commentator." The writing style is very familiar. Posted by: shylurker on July 6, 2004 04:43 AMrandom possibility: general anthony zini (who is from pa). that would blow everybody's mind. Posted by: mike on July 6, 2004 04:53 AMBased on a look at Graham, Gephardt, and Clark, I'd bet it's Clark, or at least Clark plays some speaking role very soon. There's a lot of Neptune in all three of these transiting charts. Clark has a transiting Venus conjunct his Uranus tomorrow that stands out. If it's Bob Graham, I would expect him to be initially overwhelmed, as transiting Jupiter is conjuncting his natal Neptune that's opposite Saturn. A little later though, it transits over his Moon/Mars conjunction, which makes his a big booming voice of a truthteller, in Virgo. But I don't really see this being the choice. From the looks of it, I'd be surprised to see Edwards get it. He just had a Venus transit over his Jupiter/Moon conjunction, but that's waning, he's last weeks choice for Kerry. There's also a Saturn transiting over his natal Uranus, which doesn't seem like an easy thing, more like a learning experience, though I guess you could frame it as a maturation thing too. Come to think of it though, with the Moon in Pisces tomorrow, maybe it's exactly Neptunian influence that we *should* be looking for in the chart. In that case, it's strongest in Clark and Graham. However, since this is happening without official word, and the moon is in Pisces, it could be a bunch of deception. If the choice *is* coming tomorrow AM, it's when the moon will be waning a conjunction of Uranus. I'd expect an early AM email & buildup leading to the mid-morning announcement. It might prove to be a real shocker, with Uranus involved. What's interesting with Kerry's announcement chart, is that transiting Sun is conjuncting the chart's Saturn, so something structurally is about to change in the way he is viewed, in Cancer, to the American people, and it's going to affect Bush as well. Anyway, just some random thoughts i'd droveby with... Posted by: Vis on July 6, 2004 04:58 AMMichael Moore's blog As for Kerry and his VEEP, all his Gemini opposing his Sun in Sag and TUranus is squaring his natal Uranus, he really doesn't know what to do and keeps going back and forth. On Hardball tonight Joe Trippi says the news will be out on the net by tomorrow. Any one of the potential candidates could astrologically fill the bill, both Dean and Edwards Moon conjuncts Kerry's Mars, he might find their emotional response to issues irritating. Gephardt's Mars conjuncts Kerry's Sun, he would perceive that he and Gephardt make a dynamic team. Wesley Clark just had Saturn square his Moon and when the important discussions were happening, he may have been dismissed then. If he wasn't he could be a possibility because he is a former General and Kerry is afraid of being accused of soft on terror. Graham's South Node is close to the US Sun, and Saturn just went over that point activating his past for him. He may not seem to be a threat to Kerry (by Kerry) All of Carol Mosley Braun's Leo would activite Kerry's Jupiter in Leo and make him seem a more exciting candidate to the people. and I've heard a ton of people wish for Hillary. Any one of these people would be a possibility and a workable possibility. Kerry's progresions are interesting, especially the Moon. Tomorrow, the progressed Moon for Kerry moves into Virgo, and he becomes more detailed and analytical. His natal moon in Gemini, he'll welcome the progression, and it coming up on his MC, he'll feel things building. Kerry's Moon is in Gemini, at '17, which is conjunct John Edwards Sun and progressed Jupiter. So, in that transit of Edwards that I mentioned from a week ago of the Moon, could have been when the deal was made, which, iirc, is about the time when the press just reported that Kerry called Edwards out of Disney World to meet in DC. So, is it Edwards? I don't have a clear shot here, but I like the fact that Kerry's Moon ties in well with him, and so does the announcement chart's interplay of Saturn with Edwards Saturn, which signify's the Democrats in some persepectives. Posted by: Vis on July 6, 2004 05:09 AMVis, it is always grand to see a post from you. I do hope you are right about Clark. Graham knows the 9-11 stuff, but he doesn't "spark." Edwards bothers me as he was invited to this year's Bilderberg conference, and I was concerned that they were indeed interested in getting him to the VP slot since he could help them (Kerry, apparently, attended a year or two, or few, ago, so I guess he's in their pocket, too). Gephardt? Oh, puh-leeze. The one thing I appreciate about that man was during the NAFTA debate when he got up there and said, unabashedly, that he couldn't figure out what it would do. NAFTA was one Clinton eye-wool number, all right, and one I can't forget. Clark will blow them out of the water in terms of their excellent adventure in the ME and in terms of their really crazy response to terr. (I think I owe JoannaO a thanks for that one.) My man is Dean, but I don't think he'd make it. Whatever! Just the ramblings of an old thing. Here we go (I hope) towards Ahhhhhhnold's loss of interest in things political: Vis, I hope you are right about Edwards and I think people would like him with Jupiter conj. his Moon, but even though his Moon and Kerry's is in Gemini I think the conj. of Edwards Moon to Kerry's Mars is an irritant. I do notice that Kerry's Moon conjuncts Edwards Sun and then they both oppose Kerry's Sun and Edward' progressed Jupiter hits that 18/19 Gemini degree being opposed by Pluto, might be a great spark. Partly I think because Kerry has said several times when asked specifically about a candidate from the South (no names mentioned) that he didn't believe that was needed in order to win. True, that could have just been there to put people off the Edwards trail so Kerry wouldn't be in a position of naming a veep before he wanted to do so. Also Edwards Sun has just recently (this last year) gone over the US NN (something new) It's the surprise factor of Kerry's Uranus square Uranus and the decisions made under that transit aren't always wise decisions. However to a more pointed question, do you think the VP has that much of an influence in the presidential race, or will it have this year? Posted by: Sally on July 6, 2004 06:15 AMMr. Vis: * It is time to do Leo Strauss some more. Previously, I have used two Straussian aphorisms or paraphrases: One, Lies are the Grease of Politics and, two, Enemies are Politicians' aphrodisiacs. I added that the core of Strauss's political philosophy is to do whatever it takes to seize power and, having seized power, do whatever it takes to keep power. A simplistic view of Strauss is to take Orwell to the 10th power. From Animal Farm, "All animals are equal, but some animals are more equal than others." Straussians acknowledge being unrepentant elitists. Orwell called them "pigs." In reference to 1984, Orwell was at least 20 yrs early. Orwell was reacting to Soviet Communism. Today, we have George W Bush as supreme irritant. The tsunami of adulation for Reagan is pure Strauss. The so-called "Great Communicator" was, in fact, the "Great Prevaricator." He rarely said what he meant or meant what he said. He mastered the mumble and made a virtue out of poor memory. He communicated most effectively by simply falling asleep to signal his cognoscenti. The avuncular and cockeyed smile along with affectations of cowboy boots was pure Hollywood. Today, Santa Barbara morphs to Crawford. A spoiled brat rich kid from Texas via Connecticut upstages Paris Hilton without decorations. Tantrums, anyone? Most observers and commentators see that Straussian political philosophy now guides the NeoCons and that the NeoCons now control the bush [regime]. While I was too naive at the time to know how to name the processes involved, I will now date the Straussian accession with Goldwater's time. The design to seize first the Republican Party and then the US govt on the way to world domination was the driving force behind Barry Goldwater and his legions. Goldwater mellowed with age. The legions stayed armed and formed into phalanx. I can now add that the Straussians are the Wahabi of America, political and religious. As Craig Unger details in his book, House of Bush-House of Saud, these two dynasties run on pure Straussian principles. As I wrote previously, bin Laden and Bush are brothers. Move a step further and Carlyle Group is Strauss in business and finance. Move a pace rightward and find that fundamentalisms of any breed obey Strauss's political philosophies. Trying to shed light on Leo Strauss using Leo Strauss runs immediately into Leo Strauss being Leo Strauss (which is a example of Straussian logics). Leo Strauss as an historical persona ends as an atheist with a Hebrew core who grounded himself in classical philosophies and twisted Plato's Republic into Rove's America. Without ever knowingly pursuing Kabbalah (Hebrew mysticism of a type), Strauss imbibed the arcana of hidden meaning in elaborate constructions penetrable only by initiates. Without ever practicing Tibetan mysticisms, he developed mandala and mantra to put them to shame. Leo Strauss worked hard to confuse analysis while snaring devotees with golden chains of lusts imputed and greeds little satisfied as others might imagine. To place Strauss more concretely, the lusts and greeds he triggers focus almost purely on power. Notice the word "purely." Anyone hear echoes of Aryan racial purity? Who was Leo Strauss and how did he become the NeoCon guru? Earl Shorris, writing in the June 2004 Harper's makes an attempt to probe Strauss and his imputed roles in contemporary politics. Ignoble Liars: Leo Strauss, George Bush, and the Philosophy of Mass Deception. (pps. 65-71) ... This strains the credibility of the Roman Catholic Church to the extreme. The wackos have returned in force. http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20040630-111108-2541r.htm Posted by: Sally on July 6, 2004 06:31 AMForgive me, Mia, for I am certainly no astrologer. However, one of the astrologers who enlightens us here, did/does foresee a success for Dean on the night when the 2004 election returns are in. I'm wondering, on the basis of that, if we cannot win "points" to swing the thing toward truth, honesty, and all that wonderful stuff we love. If I had my druthers: Clark or (should we be so lucky, a female) Mosley-Braun. outside of Hillary has there been any mention at all, or hint from Kerry that it might be someone other than the list of people who were running before Kerry won the nomination? I also think Kerry might pick someone he really likes with Venus turning direct so close to his Mars. Unfortunately the 'dark moon Lillith" (dark evil energy) close to where Venus went retrograde and within spittin distance of Kerry's Saturn. This aspect goes right along with the attorney who filed a suit against Kerry as a Catholic, both Kerry and Edwards are going to have what they really value hit them in the face. The rest of us should try to stay away from hatreds this week and do what we can to spread love, light and honesty. Posted by: Sally on July 6, 2004 06:51 AMInteresting news tidbit this morning. After dimson's trip to (?) Ohio? yesterday his plane developed some sort of problem and another I said it when I first looked at his inaugural chart and I said it here recently. Plane trouble. That inaugural chart calls for plane trouble in more ways than one. Sally, WV, and Jo,
My point in analogy is: if one consistently follows Fox news, and or Rush Limbaugh, and or whether knowingly or unknowingly a preponderance of right wing outlets, one has a very skewed and (rosy) biased view of what this administration is doing in this country. The same condition exists when one consistently subscribes to outlets who present only one biased view of the causes of this war. As far as I can see the State of Israel is not involved in the affairs of this country. But this country is involved in the affairs of the State of Is the United States too involved in the Palestinian issue? In order to be involved in the Then how does it become, as other posters agree and Jo has stated "the State of Israel is too much involved in the affairs of this country." If by this Jo means some wacked out crazy neo-con ideologues who happen to be American Jews are in the pentagon run by Rumsfeld and Cheney by the names of Wolfowitz and Perle and some others are too much involved in the making of this war and this administration's wacked out ideology, I can agree. I can agree that the Christian religious right fundamentalists are too much involved in the politics of this country also. But I cannot agree to the laying of the cause of this war at the feet of the State of Israel. And I do find it to begin to appear to be a bigoted viewpoint. Did I miss proof that Perle and Wolfowitz are Zionists? or Israelis? or agents of the Mossad? Who benefits from America's war on Iraq? Always follow the money. Besides the dimson family, carlyle, halliburton and the oil companies, and various other corporations, the Saudi's benefit. James Baker III has arranged for the Saudi's to be repaid some 19 BILLION dollars (US taxpayer money) that Iraq owed Saudi Arabia, while other debts owed to France, Russia, Germany and so on have been asked to be forgiven. Saudi Arabia feared attack by neighboring Saddam's Iraq.Who is Who benefits? Whose Zionist plot is this? What does the State of Israel get out of it??? Not a repayment of debt from Iraq. Not land. Not oil. Not safety from its neighbors. As Sharon Katz points out Iraq is not a neighboring country to the State of Israel. History repeats itself. And the sound of what is being repeated is not pretty. If anything Saudi Arabia is too much involved in the affairs of this country, in banking, in foreign policy, in oil and energy; in the presidency and the elections of this country, in guaranteeing a lowering of gas prices before the election to make dimson look good, to the point as seen in Fahrenheit that they are the only embassy being guarded by the United States Secret Service. When you want to know what's really going on, follow the money. And them's the facts. http://www.guardian.co.uk/usa/story/0,12271,1112129,00.html "It's greed, not ideology, that rules the White House " Why the US wants Iraq's debts cancelled - and Argentina's paid in full Naomi Klein Contrary to predictions, the doors of Old Europe weren't slammed in James Baker's face as he asked forgiveness for Iraq's foreign debt last week.
The US position has been that wiping out debts would be a dangerous precedent (and rob Washington of the leverage it needs to push for investor-friendly economic reforms). So why is Bush so concerned that "the future of the Iraqi people should not be mortgaged to the enormous burden of debt"? Because it is taking money from "reconstruction", which could go to Halliburton, Bechtel, Exxon and Boeing (and now we know 19 Billion went to pay Iraq's debts to Saudi Arabia as arranged by James Baker III, the same James Baker III who recently boasted in a speech in Russia, that "I fixed the election") It has become popular to claim that the White House has been hijacked by neo-conservative ideologues in love with free-market dogma. I'm not convinced. If there's one thing the Wolfowitz/Baker dust-ups make clear, it's that the ideology of the Bush White House isn't neo-conservatism, it's old-fashioned greed. There is only one rule that appears to matter: if it helps our friends get even richer, do it. " That tabloid rag, New York Post, ran headline at 12:00 midnight that Gep was VP pick! ran it on newspaper (print edition) --- shades of "Dewey Won" --- the other media 'hos' are all over the net with the call, reporting it as breaking news. No need to wonder why we can't get the 'truth in journalism' --- just look at this shining example of reporting the news! I don't have my email, Kerry hasn't spoken, but the media 'knows' --- according to them, it's Gep or Edwards or Clark Nice to see Kerry's face all over the net news anyway! Namaste Posted by: Jo on July 6, 2004 01:01 PMIt's Edwards. Trapper John over at http://www.dailykos.com/ has the story on the front page. Wonder what position Dean will get in Kerry's cabinet? Posted by: Cass on July 6, 2004 01:28 PMCass, one of the Kossacks got their email -- Kerry email: In just a few minutes, I will announce that Senator John Edwards will join me as my running-mate on the Democratic ticket as a candidate for vice president of the United States. Teresa and I could not be more excited that John and Elizabeth Edwards will be our partners in our journey to make America stronger at home and respected in the world. I want you to know why I'm excited about running for president with John Edwards by my side. John understands and defends the values of America. He has shown courage and conviction as a champion for middle class Americans and those struggling to reach the middle class. In the Senate, he worked to reform our intelligence, to combat bioterrorism, and keep our military strong. John reaches across party lines and speaks to the heart of America -- hope and optimism. Throughout his own campaign for President, John spoke about the great divide in this country -- the "Two Americas" -- that exist between those who are doing well today and those that are struggling to make it from day to day. And I am so proud that we're going to build one America together. In the next 120 days and in the administration that follows, John Edwards and I will be fighting for the America we love. We'll be fighting to give the middle class a voice by providing good paying jobs and affordable health care. We'll be fighting to make America energy independent. We'll be fighting to build a strong military and lead strong alliances, so young Americans are never put in harm's way because we insisted on going it alone. I can't tell you how proud I am to have John Edwards on my team, or how eager I am for the day this fall when he stands up for our vision and goes toe-to-toe with Dick Cheney. This is the most important election of our lifetime, and a defining moment in our history. With you by our side every day of this campaign, John and I will lead the most spirited presidential campaign America has ever seen and fight to lead our nation in a new and better direction. Thank you, John Kerry
fasten your seat belts, edwards rocks. he has a gift that allows him to communicate a clear message ('two amcricas') with passion. he also has a lifetime of taking on the cheney's of the world and giving them a good spanking. someone with edward's gift needs just adequate 'stars' to soar above the crowd. aside from edward's gift of communication this says great things about kerry's sense of self and security. he must be very comfortable with who he is to pick someone who clearly 'out shines' him on at the podium. good news across the board!!! Posted by: mike on July 6, 2004 02:34 PMI agree Mike, he has that true gift of the Gemini, the mouth and I love his mouth. In listening to him during the campaign, he was quick with the comebacks and outside of Carol Mosley Braun I thought him to be the best choice, and given the prejudice we have toward women, that makes Edwards the best choice. This is a terrific choice and I think the people will really like him with that Moon/Jupiter conj. Vis was right, it was Edwards. Yeaaaaa Posted by: Sally on July 6, 2004 03:04 PMFrom the beginning of my involvement with the Kerry campaign back in January, the staffers made one thing very clear to me about the VP nominee. The eventual VP pick would be someone that voters in the swing states liked. I would argue that this is one of the main salient features about Edwards that Kerry was looking at in making his pick.
