The Two Elephants
Doomed from its inception, the Bush administration's crusade to "liberate" Iraq has become a violent conflagration of conflicting intentions and discordant ideologies, with the casualties and the potential for disaster increasing daily. The wildfire of nationalism has begun to sweep the land, uniting Sunnis and Shiites for the first time in centuries against a common enemy, the Americans. Already, more troops are being injected into the equation, and the repeated American mantra is that we must "stay the course and prevail," always accompanied by threatening assurances of civil war and regional chaos if we do not. Underlying all of the failures of this war in Iraq, however, and all of the deception used to get us there, is a flawed ideology that obsesses a small cabal of neoconsevatives currently sitting in the highest reaches of power. The ambitious and grandiose plan of men such as Donald Rumsfeld, Dick Cheney, Paul Wolfowitz, and Richard Perle, to name but a few, is well-documented in the writings of the Project for a New American Century (PNAC). In short, it seeks to maximize American hegemony, prevent any other nation from competing with that global dominance - both militarily and economically, and it begins with the ousting of Saddam Hussein and the creation of a puppet democracy in Iraq. According to this plan, Iraq would then become a strategic center for American military power and dominance from which the entire oil-rich Middle East would be policed and controlled. It is important to understand that any significant transfer of authority to the United Nations during the current Iraqi transition, any allowance of the UN to supervise the creation of the new government and its economic foundations, is to relinquish the heart of the neoconservative agenda. This is why the Bush administration has thus far refused. But this refusal has grave consequences. It is increasingly clear to the Arab world, and to Iraq in particular, that America plans to keep huge military bases in Iraq and control its oil resources. The grip of the multinationals on the recreated economy of this devastated land is all too clear. Such actions only feed the resentment and simmering anger of the Islamic world and strengthen the accusations of the terrorists, swelling their ranks. This neoconservative ideology is like the proverbial elephant in the living room. It has recently been buried under a lot of distracting rhetoric about making Iraq a beacon of democracy, just as it was initially hidden by all the lies about Saddam’s weapons of mass destruction and the coming mushroom cloud. But it stands as the true reason for our invasion, and it is the fatal flaw that underlies all of the mistakes, the unrealistic expectations, and the deceptions of the Bush administration’s Iraq policy. Any sane plan to extract the United States from Iraq and from the current fiasco must first and foremost define and then repudiate the entire neoconservative doctrine. The human race is ever-evolving, and one of the signs of that evolution is the increase in attempts at global cooperation and ideals expressed in the 20th and now the 21st Century. The League of Nations, the United Nations, the International Criminal Court, the Kyoto Treaty, and numerous other international treaties, are all examples of this growing phenomenon. The Bush administration's attempts to unilaterally establish our power over other nations and at their expense, while refuting international cooperation, is a throwback to the failures of the imperialism of the past and ultimately will lead to disaster. Iraq stands as the signature of the failed neocon agenda, and the grip of that agenda must be removed from our Iraq policy, or this nation will continue in the downward spiral that has already begun. But there is another elephant in the living room that must also become a central theme in our national discourse. And this is America's addiction to oil. In reality, this elephant helped spawn the first. Without our rapidly growing consumption of a finite resource, would we be establishing a ring of military bases around the Middle East? Would we need to aggressively ensure our oil supply as the likelihood of decreased output rushes toward us from the future? In the life of an addict, the landscape is strewn with the casualties of his addiction. His family, his career, and his finances are all riddled with chaos, but the tendency is to blame his wife, his mother, and his boss rather than to face the truth about his addiction. In reality, it is his substance abuse, including the changes it creates in his behavior and the desperate measures he takes in order to satisfy his dependency, that is the ultimate source of his ever-increasing problems. America's rapidly growing oil consumption is obscenely out of proportion with its percentage of the world's population. But even worse, American military actions, foreign policy, and environmental policy have all been hijacked by this addiction, wildly twisted onto a self-destructive collision course by the contortions necessary to feed a reckless dependency on oil. The neoconservative plan for global dominance is only one example. Our environmental policy is another casualty of our oil addiction. As with the addict who denies as long as possible the ravages his addiction causes on his health, the current administration is resolutely ignoring the coming environmental disaster caused by global warming and the increased pollution in our homeland. Instead, it is focusing on increasing the supply and the out-of-control burning of fossil fuels. Meanwhile, the toxicity of our land and water supply increases, and severe and irreversible climate changes are imminent. What is called for is no less than a paradigm shift in our policies and our world view. The Bush administration is incapable of such a shift, being joined at the hip with the oil industry. Our current government is essentially in bed with our "dealer", the oil companies. And it is the "dealer" who is enriched by our continuing addiction. Talk about conflict of interest! From this point on, our energy policy must be seen as inextricably connected to our foreign policy. Some of the huge sums of money being used to sustain numerous military bases now ringing the Middle East need to be siphoned off in a war on our oil addiction. This would benefit national security, eventually weaken what motivates the terrorists, benefit the environment, create numerous new jobs, etc. We could start with mandating solar panels on all government buildings and public housing. The factories could be located where the most manufacturing jobs have been lost. There is a whole host of polices that can be implemented, but the public must be educated on the connection between our irresponsible consumption of resources and our foreign entanglements. The terrorists don't "hate our freedom." They hate us being in their world, supporting their repressive regimes, so that we can ensure a steady supply of the black gold into our national bloodstream. It is time we took some responsibility for the mess we are in. This is not to say we don't continue to utilize police and intelligence work and military strikes when necessary to remove terrorism as a threat. But it is to suggest that we had better look at how our own behavior has incited much of the hatred and begin to radically change it. Continuing the Bush/neocon pre-emptive, aggressive policies is a recipe for continuing disaster. It is a policy that dominates, manipulates, and lies in order to control the world's resources as a way to ensure an adequate supply for an inordinate appetite. It alienates and enrages other countries, it empties the treasury, creates wars, and pollutes the world. It is time that our policies not be tainted and distorted by an unhealthy addiction to oil and a corresponding compulsion to control others. When the construction contracts in Iraq and the national resources are returned to Iraqis, and the UN oversees development in a dispassionate way, much of the resentment will dissipate. When our government focuses on developing alternative energy sources and moves away from a need to control and bully the rest of the world, alliances will again be possible. In a globalized world, the goals of our nation - economic, environmental, and even military - will increasingly necessitate coordination and cooperation with international allies. The alternative path will only lead to more and more Iraqs. ****************************** With Iraq as the current battlefield for the neocon agenda, it is useful to look at that nation’s birth chart to glean suggestions as to how the current crisis will unfold. Iraq has been under extremely strong Uranus transits since the American invasion in the spring of 2003. Uranus was square the Iraqi Midheaven from April through July 2003 and stationary opposite the Sun and Mercury from September through mid-December 2003. Both the Midheaven and the Sun in a chart represent the rulership of a nation, and both received direct hits from the planet of sudden upsets and irreversible, swift transformation during 2003. In the spring, this manifested with the fall of Saddam from power, and, in early December 2003, during the final crossing of Uranus opposite the Iraqi Sun, Saddam was found and arrested by the American forces. The first half of February 2004 brought hundreds of casualties from a series of very violent suicide bombings and car bombings, during the final crossing of Uranus square the Iraqi Midheaven. By mid-March 2004, the tumultuous Uranus had moved to its current location, hovering opposite the Iraqi Ascendant where it will remain through January 22, 2005. More than any other, this is the aspect of the rebellion against US authority. Uranus is the planet of independence and freedom, the impulse to throw off restrictions and past impediments. It is the planet of revolution. As long as it is strong in the Iraqi chart, opposing the Ascendant from March 2004 through January 2005, the conditions in the country (Ascendant) will reflect considerable upheaval, and the mood will be one of struggling for freedom and self-expression. It is no coincidence that the revolt of the Iraqis against the British colonial rule in 1920 occurred under the exact same Uranus position that we are seeing presently. During June through August 2004 this disruptive and rebellious energy is likely to be quite strong, with an upsurge of violence and transformative events especially likely during the second half of August 2004. A second aspect of significance in the Iraqi chart is the transit of Neptune currently opposite Iraq’s Mars. This also was quite strong during the initial stages of the war (March through June 2003), returning briefly in January and then for an extensive period during the Neptune station from late August through early November 2004. It brings a feeling of unrealistic hope and expectation that can turn to disillusionment and loss. It also makes pragmatic decisions difficult, with people easily swept up in seemingly visionary but unworkable rhetoric. Clearly, this aspect describes the initial hopes of the early post-Saddam period that were later disappointed and frustrated during the chaotic and dangerous conditions of the occupation. Although not exact at the moment, this Mars /Neptune aspect nonetheless influences all of 2004 and is likely contributing to the growing support of the Sadr rebellion. It seems likely that the late August through early November period will bring some kind of collective vision or hope that may not be very reality-based but may nonetheless be very compelling. It seems to be precipitated by a particularly violent, significant event or series of events in mid to late August 2004. Interestingly, January 2005, when the first elections are scheduled, will bring with it the final crossing of Uranus opposite the Iraqi Ascendant. This suggests some tumult and upsets around election time, but nonetheless, the final phase of a significant transition that will have gone on for almost two years. Intermittently throughout 2005, transiting Uranus will conjunct natal Uranus, which may bring some shake-ups and shiftings to Iraq as it settles into its new identity. But this aspect is nowhere near as volatile as Uranus aspecting the Ascendant or Midheaven, which, as we have been witnessing, is extraordinarily disruptive. One final planetary aspect worth examining is the transit of Pluto square the Iraqi first house Jupiter/Saturn conjunction from December 2004 through December 2005. Following the disruptive and rebellious Uranian energy and the over-idealized Neptunian influence of 2004, this aspect suggests an increase in optimism and general good feeling in 2005, but with some amount of restricted self-expression and struggle. Possibly, it will bring an intensification of deep religious feeling as well. It may be that the Islamic overtones of the newly created state are reflected in this aspect, but there is nothing in the natal chart to suggest a fundamentalist tyranny (the very practical Taurus rules the 9th house). It remains to be seen whether a new hybrid of democracy and Islamic theocracy will emerge that is neither what our current White House resident hopes for nor what he most fears. But under these aspects, it is quite possible, suggesting that the neoconservative agenda will not reach fruition as planned.

Many have suggested that a large segment of America would turn the other way while Iraqis died, as long as there was oil for their SUVs and their lifestyle continued... but your analogy makes it easier to wrap your mind around... collectively, we in America are the real problem, our addiction is what drives the Neocons --- I applaud your analysis. Posted by: Pat on April 14, 2004 09:17 PMI never go to the wingnut websites, but since I've been surfing dailykos blog I sometimes run across a link to something really incredible... last night there was a link to blogger describing the "rainbow over the White House" and a pic was shown and that was followed by a photo of Dubya and Laura ringed in a rainbow... comments were that "God is a great cinematographer" --- and the blogger went onto say that events in Iraq now indicate we "are making a push for more land, which is welcome" ... she was remorseful over the loss of US lives, but knew their families would be consoled knowing "what glory they had died for"... I was so physically sick I had to rush to the bathroom! This is the kind of sick stuff that is out there... people actually think their god is guiding their great 'son of god' who is often pictured with a halo 'round this head' --- go to Daily Kos and scroll down, you'll get an eyeful if you didn't already know about this trash... Now some may say that the rainbow, halo people are probably practicing the same joy, and maybe they are, but to the best of my knowledge, we don't fake reports, or photos so I'll feel free to say we are by no means the same. We appear to be in the rabbit hole. No neocon would bother to worry about whether anyone but themselves should have any rights at all. All the doctored photos are just another tool for them to expand the borders of la la land, and if Bush brings the end of humanity, well, so much the better. They usually end up in more moderate churches, but I would bet many will end up in some other religion or non at all. By Deborah Zabarenko WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Strange planetoid Sedna, the most distant object in the solar system, was supposed to have a companion moon, but even the Hubble Space Telescope (news - web sites) could not find it, scientists said on Wednesday.
Astronomers who first detected Sedna had expected to find a moon orbiting their discovery, mostly because Sedna was spinning so slowly that they figured a satellite must be slowing its rotation to just one turn every 20 to 50 days. "We were so convinced that there had to be a satellite, because there is no other good scientific explanation for why something will rotate as slowly as 20 days," Mike Brown, an astronomer at the California Institute of Technology, said at a telephone news conference. "Much to our surprise, there's no satellite," Brown said. Sedna, named for the Inuit goddess who created Arctic sea creatures, is the coldest, most distant object ever found in our solar system, three times further away from the sun than Pluto -- at 8 billion miles, the sun would appear so small on Sedna's surface that it could be blocked from view by the head of a pin. Sedna is part of the solar system, but it is not considered a planet. Instead, astronomers consider it a minor planet or planetoid. A HIDDEN MOON? Brown and his colleagues announced the find on March 15, and immediately began searching the area with the orbiting Hubble telescope, expecting to see Sedna's moon. Hubble didn't find one, but it could still be there, Brown said. Sedna's moon might be hiding directly behind it, or the satellite might be fainter than astronomers expected, making it hard for even Hubble to detect. Other possibilities include the notion that Sedna once had a moon, which slowed the planetoid's rotation, but the moon was destroyed by an impact with another cosmic body or was pulled away by a close encounter with another planetoid. Moon or no moon, though, Sedna's status as a planetoid remains unchanged, Brown said. "Whether or not an object has a moon in no way influences what we think of as a planet," he said. "Mercury and Venus have no moons and there's no doubt that they're planets. There are many asteroids that have moons and other objects out beyond Neptune ... which are clearly not planets. so unfortunately this doesn't help to answer the situation." Brown and other researchers believe Sedna is just one of many such planetoids at the solar system fringe. For now, though, Sedna is a cosmic oddball: one of the reddest objects in our planetary system after Mars, it takes a highly elliptical path around the sun, reaching 84 billion miles at its farthest point. The complete orbit takes 10,500 years to complete. Even at its closest to the sun, the temperature on Sedna never gets above minus 400 degrees Fahrenheit. --------------- Apparently Sedna has no moon, and it completes a rotation every 20-50 Earth days. I'm no astrologer, but it would seem to me that this discovery means we're about to have a 3-6 week encounter with dangerous forces. Do a google search on the mythology of Sedna. It's a heart-wrenching tale of fatherly betrayal. The fact that there is no moon probably has astrological implications as well. Take all the good things that our moon represents and remove them from the influence of this object. It suggests to me that this object is very very cold-natured (emotionless, unsympathetic, devoid of humanity). This would be consistent with the content of the myth, and the nature of the Sedna planetoid. In my highly amateurish opinion, this does not bode well for the upcoming Mars-Pluto opposition. This is especially true since Sedna is closest in distance to Pluto, and the reddest object in the heavens besides Mars. It would seem to only magnify the enery of the opposition. Does anyone know where Sedna falls in the configuration on the 23rd? If the exploding energy from this coming event is human caused, the Sedna discovery suggests to me a certain degree of unhumanity, raw hatred, and lifelessness. There is a psycological term called projecting or sometimes called mirroring. This is when you reject parts of your own personality and project it or see it in others. This is usuallly the bad (evil) part of yourself or the shadow self. Now I have often wondered when Bush and gang speak that what they are saying about others is just what they are. So I finally get it. All those things that he says about Sadam are the things that part of Bush's personality that he rejects. Murderer he says about Sadam, does anyone doubt that at heart that Bush is a murderer-enjoys it vicariously. Uses weapons of mass distruction on his own people-so what are those radiation tipped bombs but weapons of mass distruction that are making our own soldiers sick and lead to an early death. And on and on. Bush is one sick psyco and is such a lier to himself that he has to try to kill his own evil by trying to kill "evil people." I sure would like to do a blood test on him and find out what kind of meds are keeping him from cracking in public. As a clinician, I am not so quick to use clinical diagnoses. Many people have "traits" without the full diagnosis. None of this takes away from the fact that he is the worst and most dangerous president we have ever seen, whether due to manipulation of him by the neocons, his stupidity combined with grandiosity and delusional thinking, or a latent sociopathy. I also think that cognitive dissonance is the exact reason why people don't see the bad in Dubya. They want to believe in their president, they can't believe he lied, and especially because he is so religious like they are, they can't accept anything that contradicts their preconceived sense of his righteousness. Namaste Jo - Unlike in a natal chart where you can have rather large orbs that are more or less effective, I tend to use a very tight, one degree waxing orb for transits. If it is a three part transit, the entire period will feel the effects, but they are always much stronger during the one degree waxing period. A transiting trine is nice but may not be very impactful. It will be most noticable if it is triggering a natal aspect, if it is part of a prolonged station or at least crosses three times. Also important, transits to personal points are always far more important than to outer planets. A transit of Uranus to your Asc, MC, Sun or Moon, and secondarily Merc, Venus or Mars will be far more important than a transit of Uranus to your Neptune, which hardly counts for anything. Even Uranus to sAturn may shake thing up but it will hit you far harder and more personlly if it is to your Ascendant!! What is the dry drunk syndrome? "Dry drunk" traits consist of: Exaggerated Clearly, George W. Bush has all these traits except exaggerated self-importance. He may be pompous, especially with regard to international dealings, but his actual importance hardly can be exaggerated. His power, in fact, is such that if he collapses into paranoia, a large part of the world will collapse with him. Unfortunately, there are some indications of paranoia in statements such as the following: "We must be prepared to stop rogue states and their terrorist clients before they are able to threaten or use weapons of mass The trait of projection is evidenced here as well, projection of the fact that we are ready to attack onto another nation which may not be so inclined. In short, George W. Bush seems to possess the traits characteristic of addictive persons who still have the thought patterns that accompany substance abuse. Some of these changes may be permanent. Except in extreme cases, however, these cognitive impairments would not be obvious to most observers. Instead of fair and balanced I call their reporting “Sneer and Biased.” – an attitude which seems to have become increasingly pervasive in all media, including blogs. In the book, “Power vs. Force”, Dr. David R. Hawkins, M.D., Ph.D., presents years of research in which he maps levels of human consciousness by assigning vibrational energy values to different emotions.
