We have just witnessed the stupendous blockbuster hit, Terminator IV, a riveting and suspenseful tale merging the ever-popular superhero genre with reality TV. In this extraordinary story, the glamorous Robotic King of the Befuddling Sound Bite swept into the post-bubble wasteland of a besieged California and single-handedly terminated the corrupt and sinister Gray Politician who had ravaged the land. The audience, well trained by decades of immersion in cinematic experience, was able to suspend all rational thought, and delve into the simple and refreshing plot line in which the mere presence of the dazzling heroic powerhouse could invigorate and galvanize the destitute terrain.
Unfortunately for 21st Century Americans, life doesn't precisely imitate art. Reality is far more nuanced and complicated than a two-hour thriller, and a robust democracy demands a well-informed and intelligent electorate. With each passing election, however, we see glitz and illusion increasing its triumph over substance and rationality. With the ever-expanding hold of the visual media on our imaginations, the candidate who is the most viscerally appealing and whose sound bites best fire the imagination of the masses, tends to win the day, despite his or her past actions, policies, and statements. The media plays its own enormous part in manipulating perceptions - by which stories they pursue and which they ignore, by who gets the most air time, and by the acclaim or criticism they subtly (or not so subtly) infuse into their reporting. More often than not, they follow the best story line, with news rapidly metamorphosing into entertainment. Even worse, they are often guilty of supporting the candidates whose policies are compatible with those of their corporate owners. It is hard to imagine a more dire situation for the future of democracy.
With the victory of Arnold Schwarzenegger, we may have witnessed the perfection of the stealth candidate. Due to his moderate stances on most social policies - abortion, gay rights, etc. - many Democrats felt it would be safe to elect him to office. Religious fundamentalism has so colored the Republican image in recent years that many ignored the lurking dangers of the Governator's economic conservatism - policies that were barely whispered during the campaign. Already, Arnold has expressed that he will be deregulating the California energy industry and settling the pending lawsuit with the energy companies that robbed California of $9 Billion a few years back. Holding out for the full amount had been a Gray Davis priority. Arnold's plan, on the other hand, will redeem only a much smaller sum for the ripped-off taxpayers of California, but it will make the Bush administration and the energy companies very happy.
The rumblings surrounding the political earthquake of Arnold's recent conquest currently run the gamut from Orrin Hatch's fantasy of changing the constitution, so the Austrian-born Arnold can run for President, to liberal Californians planning the next recall. Many are predicting big trouble for the Terminator when he has to get down to real governing and away from his adoring crowds, which have often seemed the primary goal of his political career. There is also the niggling question of the many accusations of groping that swirled around the final days of the campaign. Will Arnold be taken to court to face charges of sexual battery? Will yet more women come out of hiding and join in a rising din of indignation, demanding justice?
According to planetary indications, we can expect Arnold to maintain his current level of popularity and "honeymoon status"' through January 2004, and to only a slightly lesser extent through May 2004. The relevant aspects are: progressed Jupiter trine the natal Midheaven, culminating by late December 2003; progressed Venus sextile natal Sun, culminating by mid-December 2003; progressed Mars conjunct natal Venus culminating in May 2004; and progressed Moon conjunct natal Venus, waxing through all of January 2004.
In addition, some very aggressive action is likely from the new Governor during the first pass of Pluto in opposition to his Mars, from November 26 through December 22, 2003. Due to Mars' natal position in his 12th House, we may also see some sharp back-room dealings and some behind the scene opposition attempting to subvert his efforts. But the primary feeling will be that the new Governor is enacting an all-out offensive to push his agenda. This trend continues to some degree through most of 2004, with increasing intensity beginning again in June and continuing through mid-October 2004, as Pluto returns to a one-degree orb and makes a station opposing Mars.
One difficulty Arnold may encounter during his early months in office is the derailing of his rock solid opinions about finance and how to proceed in this area. In his chart, we find a second house Saturn /Pluto conjunction, indicating someone who has very shrewd ideas about money, is conservative, grasping, and somewhat inflexible. The current Neptune station opposes this Saturn and will turn direct on October 23, bringing confusion and an uncomfortable lack of grounding to the normally stodgy and rigid sense of economic reality of the Governator, impacting him through December 2003.
January 2004 will be a particularly strong month for Arnold due to progressed Moon conjunct natal first house Venus, which in turn is conjunct progressed Mars. I anticipate adoring crowds and lots of accolades at this time. This may well be the high point of a soon to be beleaguered reign. Once the Mars progression conjunct that very attractive first house Venus begins to wane after May 2004, California's new Republican governor will begin to be vulnerable. As the glamour of the Venus energies dissipates, the harsh reality of Saturn will begin slowly to take hold.
July 2004 is the beginning of a very difficult two-year period for the Gropenfuhrer. He will attempt to wield power quite vigorously, and at times contentiously, but he will encounter increasing obstacles and a growing lack of popularity. Saturn will cross both his Ascendant and Mercury in July 2004, bringing some struggles and some unresolvable and frustrating issues. Pluto will be simultaneously opposing his natal, so his response is likely to be quite belligerent, though devoid of his usual charm. The real difficulties begin in September 2004 and continue through July 2006. Transiting Saturn will be conjunct Arnold's natal first house Venus, the source of his striking personal appeal, from September 2004 through May 2005. His much-vaunted popularity will reach a low point during this time. If there is a recall election or a court case during these months, they will not go well for the Governor.
The transit of Saturn to natal Venus is then followed by a 10-month transit of Saturn to natal Sun, from August 2005 through May 2006, also likely to bring tremendous frustration and extremely difficult problems that are not easily managed. Financial troubles in California could be quite extreme since the Sun rules Arnold's second house. Overlapping the Saturn transit to the Sun will be a Saturn transit square to Arnold's Sacramento location chart Midheaven (10 Scorpio) from October 2005 through July 2006. This suggests challenges to his reputation and increasingly difficult career issues.
If Arnold runs for Governor again in 2006, it is not at all clear that he would win. There are no strong Venus aspects to confer an aura of appeal and charisma. It may well be that the Governator is recalled during the long Saturn period coming between mid 2004 and mid 2006, or else he is run out of town for his long string of past sexual predations. No longer blinded by Arnold's photogenic celebrity after May 2004, Californians may choose to terminate his contract.

This article was music to my ears because it gives the hope that the fog might wear off Californians and they'll wake up to their stupidity.
To be fair, it is very hard for an electorate to resist a candidate that is oozing Venus and Jupiter progressions and transits. And he has such a strong Venus already, that when he is under such planets, it is hard to not be swayed.
He also has a chart without much conflict or tension, so he is generally appealing anyway.

Excellent analysis - did not recognize your writing at first ---but things really are getting very unreal...in some (most) corners...as if power to terminate somehow translates to power with the people...if this vote was fair well then all is fair in the love of California's future but I have a hard time believing the voters voted for him...more so than the others? - I guess Bustamante had too much of a stigma to shake from working under Davis...wouldn't be the first political race illusion...Blessings to you for sounding so calm and sane amidst such reckless games of the mediocre ones.

i think the USA right now is so taken with celebrity that a rock star ie mick jagger or david bowie could have run for governer and won! thats how sad things have gotten in this country. on SNL this past saturday night they did a spoof on the governator and i thought to myself that skit really just wrote itself. as my son said, the comedy writers in this country must be very happy arnold won, he'll keep them busy for months to come.

In my industry Madonna has a #1 children's book. She is a hack writer, (none of the reveiwers of significance will review her book), she herself is the product, not the book. The illustrations are just awful, the art college interns at my studio are so much better. To add even moe injury the illustrator gets no credit on the book cover or the a flap jacket bio. I just scratch my head and wonder how a hack celebrity gets to call the shots in an industry they just stepped foot into for the first time. Arndolt is the same way. I am afraid that some people are not only mesmerized by celebrity but are also DUM.
Someone said that Oct 25 would be a very significant (bad) day for Shrub, astrologically. I heard there's going to be a big anti-war rally in LA that day, and maybe other places too. Interesting timing. Anyone going to any of these.

Excellent article, as always. I'm going to save it with my calendar as a reference for unfolding events. I think "M" made a very good point--we don't know--and can't know--if Arnold did legitimately win, because the computer voting machines are controlled by the Republicans who were backing him, and there is no audit trail. Numbers crunchers have already found that an unusually high number of votes went to obscure candidates in computer-vote precincts. Were these Bustamante votes that were skimmed off? We'll never know. It's clear, though that many foolish Californians did vote for him. Please urge your Rep in Congress to vote HR 2239 into law. Thanks.
Regarding the question about Maria, I have not progressed her chart, but she has some interesting transits over the next few years. All of 2004 she is under Neptune: square her Sun and opposite her Moon. She has a 6th house Sun, so her health could be weakened. Moon is in the 4th, and 4th is ruled by the Sun, so I expect her to feel a loss of her family life as it was, be sort of confused and vulnerable in ways she doesn't like. This begins in February, after Uranus is finished with its square of her Venus in January.
Also interesting is that the last two months of Arnold's difficult two years, Maria will have some very strong Saturn aspects: conjunct her Moon and square her Sun in late July and early August 2006. Saturn will be square her Saturn 10/06 to 7/07. These could be very trying times for her since Saturn is very strong and difficult in her chart. Her progressions might show a great deal more info on this. The thing to look for would be whether she is under further difficult aspects besides Neptune when Arnold is, especially from 9/04 onward.

Wow. Maria's planets sound almost as difficult as a Saturn Return. Too bad she didn't marry someone more balanced.
Maria has a difficult chart with Saturn conjunct Venus and the Sun and square the Moon. These are all wide, but within 10 degrees, and thus very vulnerable to any touch from Saturn by transit or progression. Arnold has a tension free chart in many respects. He certainly doesn't have the extreme emotional vulnerability that she has and the need to constantly hold on to emotions, at times very painful, also implied in her chart. I think there is a lot of pain that she keeps masked and that he is unaware of in his narcissistic way. People are always very consistent. I can't imagine that he could be so into these humiliating sexual escapades and be a wonderful sensitive husband the rest of the time. The sheer imbalance in these charts suggests a less than balanced relationship: King Arnold and she who is his satellite and just swallows all the little hurts.
You know every time I see the two of them together, she is sooooo stressed. I have the impression she sold her spirit to be with him.
One of the hazards of being a public person and Famous is having people who know nothing at all about you make such outrageous blanket statements such as "she sold her spirit to be with him". Who in the H-E-double hockey sticks are we to say? That's a very unfair statement especially since it's based on someone's opinion and not, that I know of anyway, any actual knowledge of her or why she chose the way she did.
Don't know why that stuck in my craw and I felt the need to address it, but there you go. No offense intended toward anyone. Just, perhaps we can stop and think before we pass judgement on someone? I'm sure, were the situation reversed, we'd feel the pain and frustration they feel if the same or a similar judgement were passed against us. (that made better sense in my head than it did on paper ... sorry)

OK, my last comment on this. I take absolutely no pleasure is the pain of another. I reread my post, and there is no mention of pleasure.....none what-so-ever. So that must be the projection of the reader. I am rather, very happy to witness joy in my fellow human beings. When I see it, I'll say it.
Maria is a very smart woman and I really doubt she has missed the dealings and agendas that have come to pass up to and with the election of Arnold. I am sure she realizes that her husband met quite some time ago with Bush and Ken Lay. I am also quite sure she and her family realize California have been robbed, and Arnold is about to settle with them and end the court cases which would have exposed them. I'll bet she even realizes that was the primary reason for the recall, rather than any real crime committed by Gray Davis. Maria to me, looks extremely miserable and very jittery. Maria has major challenges in her chart, particularly from Saturn. Arnold, the ever faithful spouse, is very ambitious and has very few. Perhaps that's why she looks that way to me.
This site is not being benefited by all the sniping between posters and complaints about some wonderful writing. I'm frankly not use to seeing so much of it here. There is a lot of meanness and stress crackling around our earth, so maybe this is part of it.

Again, I meant no offense with my posting. I truly believe in the power of words, and to say, or even hint at the possibility, that someone might have "sold" one's "soul" to be with someone one could guess the writer finds obnoxious is an incredibly, breathtakingly powerful statement. I think my earlier posting was more a reminder to myself (and those open to such thoughts) to not so quickly judge or berate someone who you believe you disagree with. You never know when the spotlight will be turned on you or the powerlessness you might feel in defending yourself or your decisions. I sincerely hope my earlier posting didn't sound meanspirited, though. That certainly wasn't my intention, and, if it did, I sincerely apologize. I was just trying to stress the importance of trying to be a bit more ... I don't know. Maria may be Arnold's wife, but, by all accounts she's smart as a whip, has been a great mother and, if these Saturn transits are as hard as people suspect they'll be, I feel for her and her kids. One could even suspect, and I don't KNOW, of course, that her Soul has been somehow enlightened or greatly educated by her time with Arnold ... otherwise, one could bravely assume, she wouldn't have linked with him in this lifetime. We'll never know.

I'm with Pat on this one, but I'd also choose less definitive language. But saying Ahnold might be good for Maria's soul is just as much speculation as saying he's stolen it---we're all speculating and giving our opinions here, there's nothing wrong with that. Isn't there a school of thought that says watch out for those "good" charts, the perfect, charming, positive-looking ones? It's my belief that this is because the charts talk about possibilities and forms, they're like the plan or DNA, but it's how people act that determines their characters. A strong chart can still be used in a negative way, and people can overcome the problems of difficult natal aspects. Gregory Maguire's great novel, "Wicked", has a wonderful line about watching out for people who claim to be so good. In this book, the Wizard of Oz is, well, really a very bad wizard. He's fooled an entire land with decades of parlor tricks. Anyway, I see none of the humility or honesty about himself that would make me think Ahnold has a particularly admirable character. He's less hypocritical than Bush, but he still prefers to say "I don't remember saying that", or "That's old news". Riiight. I see an authoritarian personality, even though there is some lip-service to social liberalism. Read his statements. He's not a fan of democracy, he likes what he calls "strong leadership", which is abusive to the ideas of democracy of the people. He thinks most people are sheep who need to be led. I don't know if he's a soul-eater for Maria, but he's something of a soul-eater for California.
IMO the most of this administration and their cohorts around the world sold their souls for a hotdog. No more making excuses for the dark side, it shows in every photo how zoned out they really are. Camelot is BS. My two cents.
I just want to claify that I was saying "spirit", not "soul". To allow your spirit to be crushed, is by far, not the same as selling your soul. Giving up one's soul would be the last act. In this case, I mean spirit.

Hi Roxanne, You never annoy me I just will agree to disagree. No problemo re the Pope. Especially since he banned condoms. That took real wisdom and clarity. Hey, Pat, thanks for the clarification between spirit and soul. I'm certainly in more agreement with you there. Still hold to my original idea, of course, but Spirit sounds a lot more like what you'd say than your use in that particular sentence of the word "soul".
Crystal, people being paid huge sums of money does not in any way obligate them to be publicly maligned, humiliated or put out for all the "little people" to peck at for their own amusement. I suspect, were you to find yourself in a similar situation and had people demanding you do X,Y and Z and insisting you OWED it to them, you'd rail against that and probably find yourself in agreement with me. No problem with you personally, of course (although you did take a subtley unkind swipe at me in your earlier posting ... no big deal), just your idea that those in positions of public power somehow owe us their lives and privacy. No one owes anyone that... PERIOD!
Astrologically, I know that many people have mentioned the 25th of October as an important date in some way. Is this Saturn related? Or perhaps Mars or Uranus? Any links to the appropriate articles would be greatly appreciated.

Shylurker and Vis, interestingly enough the Supreme Court announced today it is taking on the Pledge of Allegiance (removal of under God) and turned down Ashcroft's pursuit of physicians recommending medicinal pot. That should put rightwing knickers in a twist or the left wing into the bowels of depression. Heard Clinton at the Paneta Inst on cspan, his closing words mentioned something to the effect that the Bush Administration would not be allowed to go so far as to shoot this country in the foot. I don't feel reassured, but then I have Ahnold for gropenator.

What is all this concern with Bush, and Oct 25? All I know is that Oct 25 is the new moon at 1 degree 41 minutes Scorpio which is conjunct Hillary's Sun. Maybe it's the day she announces, and it spells DOOM for Bush (probably wishful thinking on my part).

Alright, here's the bigger picture for Oct. 25 - Sun conj/Moon conj/Mercury. Moon will also trine Mars at 5 degrees Pisces, but most important of all, Saturn goes SR (stationary retrograde) at 13 degrees Cancer, right on Bush's Sun.
The war protesters in droves will be out as Saturn turns retro that day (Oct 25) in Washington, D.C. I hope they stay safe! I can't imagine that it will affect Bush at all as he once said that he wouldn't listen to "fringe" groups.
I read in the newspaper today that Bush's ratings have gone back up to 56%. What the hell?
I have a hard time not seeing the Dems at some point recalling Arnold.

Maybe then.
On the 25th, Saturn turns and then begins separating from the US Sun, though remaining in the neighborhood for several months and crossing it in June (along with Bush's Sun and the GOP Sun at that time). So until the 25th there is a sense of a vise tightening on the US Sun (Bush). After that date, there may be some lessening of some of the tension for a while. The issues don't go away, but may shift. And what I find very interesting, is that around that time (the 27th) Pluto goes back into one degree orb of opposition to Bush's Uranus/progressed MC, just when that aspect is exact (around 11/1). Pluto stays there, waxing, through November. So we leave the waxing Saturn sense of stuckness and failure and move to the waxing tr. Pluto/n.Uranus/prog.MC. feeling of crisis and action and things shifting rapidly.
I think this late October/November period will bring some kind of (likely foreign) policy crisis to Bush. But it will feel different than the current weight of everything failing and the scandal hanging over him like a black cloud (Saturn). It will be more like sudden and powerful events that demand action and strong resolve.
We have seen how Uranus opposing the Iraqi Sun/Mercury has brought increasing demonstrations and increasing violence from the resistance. I would expect that to increase when Uranus turns direct on 11/8 and moves again towards those positions. I don't know if a date has been set for when the Turkish soldiers will enter Iraq, but we should try to note the date on that. If it is in November, we can likely expect trouble, as both the Iraqis and the Turks have been all but promising.
Another interesting aspect is the progressed Moon in Bush's chart which is quincunx his natal Uranus/prog MC this month til 11/9. We can anticipate that this is triggering the Uranus/MC progression. The overlap with Pluto will be the period from 10/27 to 11/9. I think this is a time to watch carefully. Mars will oppose Bush's natal Mars /progressed Sun in the first week of November as well.

This is a bit off topic, however, I've really enjoyed everyone's astrological/political insights.
An astrologer friend of mine suggested (so did another website) that with Bush's progressed Venus and Jupiter forming a conjunction at 25 Libra, he would likely win the race for the White House next year. Any thought's?
I know how favorable Howard Dean's signs are supposed to be. How do they compare with those of Duh-bya(sic)?
I'd be very interested in everyone else's opinion as to what this aspect means.

The U.S. has found itself in an awkward position in Iraq, because it wants Turkey to send troops there, in order to put a Muslim face on the coalition forces, but this plan is vehemently opposed by the Iraqi Governing Council whom the U.S. recognizes as the legitimate interim government since it was appointed by Bremer. The Kurds (who are enemies of the Turks)in the Council fear that the Turks may still have their eye on the oilfields in the north, and might try to take control of that area, so I think that plan will have to be shelved for now. Meanwhile, there's a young upstart Shiite cleric in the south, who is preaching anti-American rhetoric, and has decided to form his own government, with its own militia, very much like what Ahmad Chalabi has done, so sooner or later he will have to be confronted by the U.S. forces. It's beginning to look more and more like Afghanistan with the different warlords staking out their own territory.
Then there's that other hotbed - Israel & the Palestinians. In the past few days, Israel has gone on the offensive again, bulldozing hundreds of homes, and rendering 1200 Palestinians homeless. The confrontation with Syria still hasn't been resolved, so there are many conditions in that area ripe for some sort of explosive situation to develop.
Laurie, Bush will most likely find some excuse not to be at the White House on that Saturday, as he has usually done in the past, when there are anti-war protesters in the area.
Mary - The prog Venus/ prog Jupiter conjunction peaks, by my calculation, in mid-August 2004. That is based on the Sag rising US chart. I know Wolfstar sees it as exactly trine the US Moon, but that is based on the Scorpio rising chart which he uses. The Sag chart has a 27 degree Aqu Moon, not really relevant to this progressed conjunction. I tend to see aspects as waning in influence very quickly after they peak. If there is a strong transit, you might add another month or so, but that is it if you are looking for big events. (For example, the Pluto transit opposing Bush's prog MC/Uranus will be triggering it through November just after it peaks around 11/1.)
I am a great believer in Venus being a big factor in electoral victories. Strong Venus progressions give one the feeling of being loved and adored, of being charming and popular. Election 2000, Gore had Saturn on his Venus; Bush had prog Mercury conjunct Venus, converse prog Moon trine Venus, and converse progressed Sun square Venus, exact in January 01, October 00, and February 01, respectively. The man oozed Venus. People just "liked" him and voted for him even though they didn't agree with him.
That lovely Venus Jupiter progression peaks in 8/04 at 25Libra30 and then both of the planets move into a square with Saturn which is 26Cancer30. By the election that Venus is at 25Libra50, 40 minutes from the exact square to Saturn. In the meantime, the converse progressed Venus is semisquare natal Saturn from about May 04 to Feb 05. In addition, the transit of Saturn will be triggering both of these progressions when it crosses its own place from late September through December 2004. This is not a charming and attractive candidate. This is someone who is stiff and uncomfortable and unhappy. This is not a winner.

a few astro questions:
1) why would Saturn conjuncting arnolds ascendent mean a recall for him? Doesn't Saturn on the ascendant mean more responsibility for someone, more to handle or maybe i should say more than they can handle? i would expect that aspect to mean someone is really overburdened (which sounds right in todays papers everyone and anyone is stiking in the LA area).
2) Maria has looked to me by seeing her picture on tv, very anorexic in recent years, even at the victory night she was at recently with her spouse. How would that show up astrologically in her chart?
3) The eclipse of November 8-9th is supposed to be a very good one for people, with a star of david and many sextiles and trines. Would this help bush and cohorts (hope not) or help any of the dems working against him? The aspects are 16 Taurus/Scorpio. Since those aspects are my personal ascendant, i am looking forward to this eclipse, which i hope promises for some inner wisdom to come with it (we could all use that in these stressed out times). If anone is interested, the are web sites about the eclipse are called a harmonic concordance.

I don't think Saturn crossing his Asc will bring on a recall. I agree it just will give him a lot of work and probably some obstacles to overcome. I think it is primarily significant because it is the begining of several Saturn aspects beginning in July that go for about 2 years for him. The one time crossing to the Asc and Mercury is fairly quick and ultimately of little concern, but the ongoingness of Saturn from July 04 through July 06 could really drag him down, especially with little relief from his playful self-indulgent first house Venus. I think he will be especially vulnerable with Saturn sitting on his Venus from September 04 through December 04. It should be remembered, however, that Arnold has no adverse Saturn aspects in his chart, other than the controlling Saturn Pluto conjunction in the grasping 2nd house. So all of these aspects may not be that difficult, though the length of time will start to really get to him after a while. And Saturn and Venus together are never fun, so we can hope. At the least it looks like he won't be of much help to Bush under those aspects.
I think the strong Saturn aspects in Maria's natal chart, especially Saturn square Moon, give her that anorexic look.
I am not a big user of eclipses, especially lunar. Unless an eclipse falls exactly conjunct either an angle or the Sun or maybe the Moon in a chart, I don't give it much heed. By the way, there was an exact solar eclipse on Gray Davis' Sun just before the energy crisis, December 25, 2000, at 4 Capricorn. I know other astrologrs do use them with great result, but I have never gone in that direction.

Still, it's sad when some 30 years later, Bush Sr.'s having to send someone over to tutor his (now middle-aged) boy in English and Social Studies. The right-wing has such fits about migrate workers not being able to speak English. Yet, it doesn't bother them one little bit, that their own president can't speak the language properly! Truly ironic.
They were showing several family photos of George, Sr., Prescott, the kids and grandchildren, in a preview of an upcoming interview the former President Bush has set to promote his new book. The pictures were just unsettling. There have been many politicians over the years that I didn't like. This is different. That entire family just gives me the creeps. You look at them and you just know they're crooked. They all have that same nasty, goofy grin.

Nancy, thanks for commenting on Saturn crossing the ASC. because Saturn is on my ASC right now. Plus it recently passed my Venus, which is right next to my ASC. I do feel overburdened with things right now, but it's nothing I can't handle. I suppose that with my ASC right on the US sun, and W's and the gop's sun, I will have problems just like them. I actually was worried because I just read a Lois Rodden interview where she mentions that many deaths occur when Saturn touches the ASC by transit or progression. Yikes! Thanks again.
Frankly, I think it is sick for anyone to be so obsessed with another's anorexia or apparent anorexia. I saw Maria on the night she took to the stage to celebrate her husband's victory with him, and I couldn't help but feel happy for both of them. Her face seemed drawn, but her body looked just fine in that figure flattering dress she was wearing, so Laurie, your surmise could very well be true, that it is a family characteristic. Hope that will put the matter to rest.

The Pope’s legacy

“I thought this was a peace prize and not a prize in sexual ethics,” protested an irate Vatican official, giving voice to the widely held belief that this year’s Nobel Peace Prize went to an Iranian human rights advocate rather than the dying Pope John Paul II because the selection committee disapproved of his hostility to homosexuality, abortion, contraception and women priests. It may be true, for he must have been a leading contender: in the past year no Western leader spoke out so firmly against the invasion of Iraq. But that is not what he will be remembered for.
The man really is dying. Reports that the Pope is now suffering from intestinal cancer in addition to Parkinson’s disease have not been denied by the Vatican, and one of the 31 new cardinals he recently created, Philippe Barbarin, archbishop of Lyons, bluntly said last month: “The Pope is reaching the end of the road. It’s a big responsibility for us. The Pope is in really bad shape.”
Since it will be almost impossible to say harsh things about him when he dies, perhaps we should take advantage of Karol Wojtyla’s 25th anniversary as pope this week (October 16) to make a franker assessment of his impact on the Catholic Church, which still commands the obedience of half the world’s Christians. It has been enormous. Almost single-handedly, he has expelled every trace of modernity from the institution.
The Catholic Church on the eve of Wojtyla’s reign in 1978 was in the midst of a great and promising transformation. The rigid centralism that began with the 16th century Counter-Reformation and culminated in the declaration of papal infallibility in 1870 had been greatly undermined by the Second Vatican Council in 1962. Local languages replaced Latin in the mass, ritual was downgraded in favour of spiritual commitment, and the whole church was in theological ferment.
I did a sort of world tour of the Catholic Church in 1978 as part of a documentary series on the likely impact of the new pope, and though I am not a believer it was a fascinating experience. In southern Africa, Catholics were playing a leading role in resistance to apartheid. In Latin America, the phenomenon of “liberation theology” was reconnecting the church with the impoverished peasant millions whom it had long ignored. In Europe and North America the old hierarchies were all under challenge, but especially the hierarchy of gender. Justice and equality were the themes, and the energy was astonishing.
Twenty-five years later, it is all gone. The collegiality promised by Vatican II is dead, replaced by top-down rule and a stream of decrees on faith and morals handed down by a pope who brooks no argument. Nobody knows how many Catholic priests, nuns and lay theologians have been bullied into remaining silent under threat of excommunication, for neither their names nor their offences are made public, but the victims of what amounts to a new inquisition probably number in the thousands. And liberation theology has been crushed as heresy, leaving the Latin American poor to seek help and hope elsewhere.
The result is many Catholics in the developed world, especially women, have become internal emigres, clinging to their Catholic beliefs but silently rejecting the authority of a Vatican that, in the words of Swiss Catholic theologian Hans Kung (whose license to teach theology in Catholic institutions was revoked by the Vatican in 1979), “has waged an almost spooky battle against modern women who seek a contemporary form of life, prohibiting birth control and abortion (even in the case of incest or rape), divorce, the ordination of women and the modernisation of women’s religious orders.”
Latin America, home to almost half of the world’s Catholics, used to be a place where no other religion had a substantial presence. Under John Paul II, however, the reimposition of the old Catholic hierarchies and orthodoxies has opened the door for evangelical Protestant sects, mostly Pentecostals and charismatics, to snap up millions of poor people who might once have been attracted to liberation theology. In a single generation evangelical Protestants have come from almost nothing to capture the loyalty of about a quarter of Latin America’s population, and they continue to grow very fast. This has happened almost entirely on John Paul II’s watch.
Then there is the fact that Wojtyla has created almost 500 saints, more than all the other popes of the past four centuries together. His candidates for sainthood often mirror his own deeply conservative beliefs, like the hundreds of Catholic “martyrs” of the Spanish Civil War of 1936-39, all supporters of General Francisco Franco’s fascist revolt against the legitimate government, whom he beatified in 2000. Even devout Spanish Catholics were embarrassed.
Much of this has been obscured by the Pope’s rock-star charisma and his constant touring, but John Paul II certainly does not leave the church as he found it. Whether he leaves it either stronger or better is open to question, but it will certainly continue on the course he has set for at least another generation, for an overwhelming majority of the cardinals who will choose his successor are men who share his deeply conservative and centralising views.
They ought to, for he chose them himself. In 15 years on the throne his predecessor, Paul VI, made only 26 new cardinals. In 25 years, John Paul II has made 226.

I think we are getting away from the original purpose of this site by spending so much time and energy trashing Maria S. and now the Pope. As a (lapsed) Catholic myself I find the comments here about the Pope offensive and totally unfounded. Yes, there are problems in the Catholic church that need to be addressed, but that does not make the Pope responsible for what has happened. Nor is he totally responsible for the bad apples (Priests) that have committed sexual offenses with children. The Catholic church is enormous throughout the world and with that huge amount of people involved there are going to be problems, and some are going to be serious. It's no different than if you are the head of a corportation and people working for you in other cities commit awful crimes - it does not make the head guy the responsible party. The Pope is human like all of us and he has done his best to do the job he was chosen to do. I suggest that if you look at other religions you will find sexual crimes against children there too. We just had a local Baptist church here come under fire with the Minister admitting to molesting children. I don't blame the whole Baptist church for it - I blame the Minister himself. Let's try and keep religion out of things here regardless of what your views are as it's unfair to focus on one religion and not all as a whole.

I believe that had this occured, the course of the world could've been altered, and still harbor extreme disappointment towards this Pope because of this. Combined with the article Crystal posted, it seems to me that the Pope has sure blown opportunities for spiritual advancement, for himself and millions of others. The beauty of astrology is that it never asks what religion, tribe, profession, nationality, race, party, or economic situation a person or event might be. It can advise through complex algorithms individually directed. It can reveal a true believer and warn of extremism. Even so, there is always some choice. The most beautiful chart can be used for ill, while the most difficult chart can be used for depth of character and fair mindedness.
I once had a tee shirt. It said, "And God said", then there was a depiction of a long mathematical equation, "And then there was light". I wore it till it wore out.

Anyway, Roxanne, I missed "Nightline", but I did see a great "60 Minutes II" piece on a former assistant to Secretary Powell, who blew the whistle on all the lies and said there was never any evidence Iraq was a threat. He told Powell, who then wnet ahead anyway and lied to the UN. UN inspectors watching the speech from Iraq were *laughing* at Powell's lies and phony evidence. The karma building up against this administartion has to be unbelievable! Lies piled upon lies.

I did my share of Catholic schools and even sent my children there until I woke up to what I finally figured out is wrong with all organized religions. They ALL think they are God's spokesperson and that they have the only ticket into heaven. Years spent since in the south here has give me a whole new outlook on religion - the southern religions are just as bad and maybe even worse in some ways. My neighbors, all fundamentalists and Baptists, think they have the answer and over lawn mowers will stop to talk about who is a going to Heaven and who ain't .. anybody that does not adhear to their faith or rigid moral system ain't. How they think they can play God with everyone else is still a wonder to me! I long ago left the Catholic church because of some issues I had with woman's rights and their rigid views and all that guilt! But, I wonder how you would expect a Pope, any Pope and not just the current one, to suddenly throw away eons of Catholic dogma and fess up to things it's done in the past? Do you seriously think that would ever happen? I think you are barking up the wrong tree if you do. Not going to happen - ever. Nor is any other religion going to come forward and attone for it's sins of the past either. They are all too steeped in their rules and nobody is going to change anything or take that risk. Look at the Episcopal church for goodness sake - they ordain women as ministers and then freak out over a Gay being elected to the same position. Their church is under threat of being split apart by this! I think we are seeing a death bell for organized religions as a whole - you will never change the old ways so it's time to move on in a more spiritual direction. I believe we all worship the same God/creator no matter what your beliefs or religion are. Let's just hope the future brings us together in one spirit where love is the true message. What a great world that would be!
It seems to me that one of the great aspects of this country's birth was the concept that all are created equal, and that everyone has the right to his own thoughts, religion, and speech. The lurking danger with human beings seems to be the tendency to think they know what is right and true and others are wrong. From this often extends the tendency to want to control others based on one's beliefs. We see this in the fundamentalist Muslims, and we see this in the right-wing Christian fundies. The anti-abortion crowd, the anti-homosexual crowd are all offshoots of this. It takes a tremendous inner effort to let others be when they are different in their beliefs. But if humankind can't make this effort, we will be doomed to continuous war and struggle.

I recall that you or perhaps Sally looked at the 2005 Inaugural chart and said that Chiron was prominent and signified a wounded healer. I wonder if this could mean that either Clark or Kerry is elected president. Both of them were wounded in the war and I believe that they would certainly bring healing to our allies and our country’s tarnished reputation. Any thoughts?

I saw Bush tonight on TV, and he doesn't look well at all. His face was puffy, eyes not focused, speech slurred, and he flubbed his lines as usual. I don't know, but he seems to be drugged. Don't be surprised if you hear that he has to be hospitalized, or confined in some manner with that Saturn conjuncting his Sun, although it might be done in a hush hush way and we may never know about it, but something is not right with him.

Tricia, I didn't say there was anything wrong with wondering. I myself said she looked anorexic, but there IS something wrong in obsessing about it. I'm sure you're intelligent enough to know the difference; and you have to be really naive to think that I "adore" them just because I was happy to see them being happy with each other in a hard won victory. I think a lot of people felt the way I did, caught up in the moment, whether or not they wanted them to win. You would really have to be mean-spirited if you didn't. I respect the right to free speech, but it should not be used as a license to be abusive or cruel.

I am Canadian--but I have been watching the goings on in the world and astrologically for quite some time--it has been fascinating!!
Some thoughts--
It would appear that "right" has been working underground, like termites, since about the beginning of the eighties, and not just in the US. The year 2000 is when they seemed to come out of the woodwork all at once, around the world--thankfully most of Canada remained fairly central,though there are some fairly strong pockets of the right.
I see all of the "right" making "asses" of themselves everywhere in the world. This is only beginning to come to light fairly recently. Prior to this, you could only watch in horror and felt like a deer caught in headlights.

Regarding Chiron, I am not an expert. I have been trying to collect data on it for the past few years to get a feel for it. That being said, I am troubled about the Chiron conjunction to the MC in the Inaugural chart. Here are some quotes from Melanie Reinhart in Chiron in the 10th:

W - I wouldn't say no militarism at all, but it is not as pronounced and jarring and problematic as it is in the 2001 chart. The Pluto Mars is 5 degrees apart. Pluto by transit will not trigger it since it is already past Mars. Mars by progression won't get to Pluto within 4 years. By tertiary progression it will reach Pluto, but we are only talking about a couple of months at most. Mars is exactly sextile Jupiter and also sextile Neptune. Mars has no hard aspects. Pluto has a quincunx to Saturn which will cause it to be held back to some degree. Pluto and Mars are corulers of the 7th house. So the quincunx to Saturn (ruler of 10) suggests adjustments necessary as we rebuild alliances.
Compare this to the current Inaugural chart. Mercury and Uranus are in a very close square to Mars (Uranus almost exact). These then form a T square to Saturn (actually Mercury and Uranus are at the T point). This is a huge amount of energy that is never balanced. The administration comes up with radical ideas that upset the status quo (Mercury Uranus in 10), which in turn cause war and anger (Mars) and criticism and forces attempting to hold them back (Saturn). It is always uncomfortable.
Then we have the underlying paranoia and need to control everything qualities of the current administration. Both of the emotional planets - Moon and Venus are in strong aspect to Pluto. The Moon is conjunct Pluto and Venus is square. These qualities have been in the forefront for the past year with the Pluto transit triggering these energies, making its exact square to Venus and its exact conjunction to the Moon. The administration feels itself caught in a desperate battle for survival (both political and with the terrorists). They attempt to control everything to deal with it. The recent Seymour Hirsch article in the New Yorker talks about how they didn't trust the regular intelligence channels. They thought the CIA was purposefully holding thing back. This distrust of other's motives is pure Pluto/Moon/Venus.
The upcoming Inaugural has none of the fanatical, rigid and obsessive Pluto characteristics that this one does. Venus and Mercury are conjunct and exactly trine the Ascendant. They oppose Saturn but by a wide orb, and again, Saturn will not cross them by transit, nor will they reach Saturn by progression. So the inherent energy in this opposition will not eerupt for any extended period. In general, it is a far easier chart, in my opinion.
