A Dangerous Myth
A dangerous myth has been shattered, like crystal hitting a cold stone floor. It is the myth of the indomitable American colossus, a giant striding the Earth among pygmies. Only mere months ago, we heard countless references to our unique superpower status. We were invincible in the eyes of a suddenly nervous world. We would do as we wished, with or without our allies, and held only disdain for those who dared to disagree. But the emerging truth, as currently played out in Iraq, is not nearly so Olympian.
Americans are awakening now out of a dream, foisted upon us by an administration of megalomaniacal dreamers, the PNAC crowd, who view the world as an unruly American province. The plan, shrouded for the benefit of mass consumption in patriotic platitudes and threats to our survival, was to establish an American outpost in Iraq from which to orchestrate a transformation of the entire Middle East. Like accommodating dominoes, the countries in that region would fall to the irresistible force of democracy, sometimes with a little nudging from our omnipotent military, modeling themselves on a newly liberated and pliant Iraq, itself a Mini-me of America. A more myopic and ill-advised plan has not been attempted in recent history. Perhaps it was conceived by the Brothers Grimm. In any event, the magical coach turned into a pumpkin as soon as the smoke from the bombs cleared. Bush’s refusal to cede any real power to the UN derives from an unwillingness to relinquish this plan and its attendant hope of a US power center in Iraq. Increased UN control would allow the Iraqis more latitude to create their own destiny, which may not accommodate American hegemonic interests. This is the elephant in the living room.
Instead of the anticipated rose petals, our soldiers have encountered thorns as the post-war atmosphere metamorphoses into a sullen, angry resistance movement, now increasingly nurtured by Islamic radicals. The birth chart of Gulf War ll clearly intimates that the initial goals of the war will not be accomplished. Born with the Sun in the 29th degree of Pisces, void of course, and square to Saturn and Pluto, the essential meaning of this war will transform itself completely from its original intent. Perhaps the real result will become more apparent when the progressed War Sun moves into Aries by April 2004. Until then, there is the feeling that the purveyors of war claim one thing but are being drawn irresistibly towards another.
It may also be that increasing turmoil and outright rebellion are in the process of manifesting in Iraq. Uranus, the planet of sudden, explosive transformation and rebellion, is just returning to its opposition with Iraq’s natal Sun and Mercury, stationary there through mid-December. Already the level of tension has escalated considerably. The terrorist bombing of the UN headquarters on August 19, followed by the lethal explosion at a Shiite mosque on August 30, and the consequent death of the Iraqi Shiite cleric, Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Baqr al-Hakim, have had enormous repercussions. Numerous international aid workers have fled the country, and the Shiites have now re-formed their militia to better defend their people. This is directly opposed to Pentagon mandate, and it remains to be seen how it will play out.
But the central dynamic for understanding the final two years of the Bush administration is Saturn - the planet that brings limitations, restrictions, burdens, losses, and responsibility. Saturn aspects are best handled with the wisdom of caution, careful planning, compromise, and humility, and, conversely, can elicit painful and difficult lessons in response to impulsive and rash, irresponsible behavior. There are three somewhat overlapping Saturn configurations impacting the US Sun in 2003 and 2004. The tertiary progressed US Saturn (13 Capricorn) is currently in opposition to the US Sun (13 Cancer) for the first time in American history. This began in February 2003 and continues to intensify until it is exact in October 2003. By February 2004, tertiary progressed Saturn moves into a square with US natal Saturn (14 Libra) until early November 2004. In addition, the progressed US Sun (29 Aquarius) is currently semisquare natal US Saturn, spanning the period from August 2003 through August 2004. Finally, transiting Saturn comes within 5 minutes of the US Sun during its station in October 2003 and then returns for the actual crossing in June 2004, essentially impacting the period from late September 2003 through June 2004. Besides the turmoil usually associated with this 30-year cycle, this transit will also trigger the underlying power of the two progressions.
In the natal US chart there is a very tight Sun/Saturn square, with Saturn in the 10th house and the Sun in the 8th. This sets up a dynamic struggle between the nation’s goals (Sun), especially those related to the manipulation of both domestic and foreign resources, hidden wealth, and power (8th house), on the one hand, and the need to be a world leader that accepts the limitations of responsibility and working for the greater good (Saturn in the 10th), on the other. The Sun also represents the president, who manifests these goals. Activation of this square (a triple dose of which we are going through currently) often brings great challenges and adverse conditions for the Chief Executive related to these issues of power, responsibility, and resources.
In 1974, Nixon resigned on the day of the exact transit of Saturn to the US Sun. The largely unprepared Truman felt the weighty responsibilities of this transit in 1945 during the final months of World War II, just after the death of FDR. The 2003 - 2004 compounding of this Saturn transit to the US Sun by two progressions suggests that the current burgeoning crises in Iraq and in the domestic economy will go down in history as one of the darkest hours for a US president.
Mr. Bush is likely to be confronted with limitations and failures from every direction. His popularity will likely plummet and the results of his misbegotten policies will become ever clearer. Were he to embrace the humility and pragmatism of Saturn, he might be able to save his presidency. Among other things, he would need to freeze or repeal his tax cuts due to the exigencies of present circumstances. He would need to give command of Iraq to the UN, retaining authority only over US troops. He would need to relinquish the fairy tale of US world domination and rejoin the community of nations as a partner and not a petulant tyrant. He would need to speak the truth.
But you cannot grow a rose out of poppy seeds, and I think it virtually impossible for Bush to see with an unfettered eye, devoid of ideology and illuminated with humility. He does not have the character, the vision, or the courage. And so we must live through our Saturn lessons, spanning from February 2003 through November 2004, with the pain of frustration, failure, and sacrifice in both blood and resources. It is likely these more pragmatic conditions will be met by the next administration, but the price will have been enormous, and the country will take many years to get over the scars.

Nancy:
Wonderful effort...every article of yours reads like a leader in a premimum newspaper, not to mention the acute astrological insight.
Taking Hillary Clinton's birth time as 7:54 pm on 10/26/1947 in Chicago it seems to me that she has a BIG surge of activity coming up in a couple of months. Her precession-corrected solar return (PCSR) for 2003 has Saturn on the MC and her PCSR for 2004 has BUSH's Jupiter/Moon conjunction falling on the MC...(among many other fascinating planetary positions.)
Also her Venus/Mer/Rahu(Node) period starts on Jul 4, 2004 and Ven/Mer/Jup period from Jan 1, 2005....all of which seems to indicate that she will become the next president of the USA.
Regards,
Lahiri
Oops...meant to say "premium"...
Forgot to add that HC's 2004 PCSR has Mars on the MC exactly alongwith Pres. BUSH's Jup/Moon conjunction.
Sorry for hogging a second post.
Lahiri
I agree with Lahiri. This is a wonderfully written article chock full of astrological insight, excellent analysis and enjoyable sentences one can revisit and enjoy time and again. I really enjoyed it.
Wish I had something more specific to offer about the astrology aspect, but that's something for the experts to do. :-)
Jonathan
I'll enthusiastically agree with Lahiri. This is so well written. Reading these words has offered one moment in the universe I can truly appreciate the balance and justice of Saturn. One might think, or should I say hope, that those who opposed this group of thugs might be spared Saturn's lessons. Let's hope the next President can handle the hardships left to him/her in repairing our country. It will be no small task.
Thanks, all!!
Lahiri, I had thought that the latest and definitive birthtime for Hillary was 8 AM, according to Lois Roddon's site. Have you heard something more recently?
Well said Nancy, especially the last paragraph. All that you ascribe to him, is clearly shown in his Asc/Pluto/Mercury conjunction, all in the sign of Leo, and his warped vision in his Sun(ruler of Asc.) square his Moon/Jupiter conjunction. These aspects bespeak arrogance, and a lack of magnanimity - not desirable qualities for a world leader, statesman, or diplomat. Yes, it will take a very long time to repair all the damage done, not only to America but also to the countries on which he has visited his "might is right" policy.
Lahiri, I hope you are right concerning Hillary. I am waiting for her to announce. I hope she will not disappoint.
I think you are correct Nancy, about the war in Iraq being very unclear until the VOC progression into Aires occurs of the Sun. From my calculations, this occurs on February 25th of 2004. I have read that Bush wants this done by a year from the date of starting the war, so I would surmise that at that time, the US pulls out of Baghdad, saying the UN is in charge, and Halliburton keeps the oilfields in the south for their own profit.
The failed war will remain the defining issue of Bush. His south node conjunct the charts MH has the whole world watching his destruction (with transiting Pluto conjunct thrown in just for the gods to have some kicks).
This is confirmed by looking at Mercury in the chart, which is progressed to exactitude with the natal Sun on the very same day as when the progressed Sun of the chart moves into Aires from VOC.
IT will be all the Press and Dem candidates are talking about, and Rove (if he's still around) will read the writing on the wall (60% will say pull out now), and hope that the media pulls Bush through another failed policy.
This will all be happening as the Sun transits in the 12th house of the Wars chart THe Sun conjuncting the outer planets (Neptune in middle Feb will break the spell --notice how this coincides with Dem primary elections-- then conjunct Uranus in mid to late Feb) will bring to light the conscious manifestation of the failure.
I'd watch for when the transiting Sun hits the angles previous to this for further shots in the Bush failing here. For instance, two days ago to today, the Sun transited over the DSC, coming from night to day-- the true costs begin to be know to the people.
By mid-December, the Sun will conjunct the chart's MH, and that won't be too wonderful for dubya, ha ha, to say the least.
Maureen Dowd's latest piece in the NY Times describing Bush's adventure in Iraq, is comically entitled:
"From Swagger to Stagger", lol.
Any thoughts on the astrology surrounding Ashcroft's current tour to promote The Patriot Act and Patriot Act II (they sound like Hollywood sequels, don't they?). This may have already been spoken about, and if that's the case, please direct me to the article, but I would like to know his current astrological transits, etc. and the probable outcome of this tour because of it.
Hope that made sense.
Jonathan

Nancy:
It is difficult to take ANY birth data however unimpeachable the source, at face value, without rectification of some sort.
For example, I think Hillary has a strongly Uranian personality and that would put it on the ascendant, in my opinion. Also, her mental toughness indicates a strong 3rd house conjunction of Mars & Pluto. Now, both aspects fall in the right places using 7:54 pm and sidereal Koch houses.
There are numerous other reasons like the above that led me to settle on 7:54 pm at Chicago for HC.

Lahiri
This morning on the Today Show Condi Rice spun the WMD issue as the capture of Saddam who is "synonomous with WMD" is also the capture of the weapons. Oh Big Brother, what a whopper! GWB looks downright dumb in those shots of him from his last speech.
ps I guess 'capture' is the wrong word on my part. Since he still maybe out there. But Condi is still full of it even if she said 'downfall'. The logic is all off.
I'm hoping everyone saw this... it's a WONDERFUL idea!

Joanna - My fantasy is that there will be dancing in the streets all over the planet when Bush is defeated. The whole world hates him and is counting on us to oust the Demon from our midst.
Vis - I think the war will continue til early June. Pluto will be stationary on the MC of that war chart from January through May.It is simultaneously opposite the US Mars. I think the war will intensify and continue its metamorphosis through May at least. I figured the shift into Aries would be about March, but I would give it a month for the smoke to clear so we would know what we had. Bush's progressed Sun conjunct Mars will be exact in late May or so, and Jupiter will be stationary on it during April and May 2004. So I am thinking he will be doing his Commander in Chief role with some relish around then. It may seem successful at first (Jupiter) but I think as Saturn moves to his and the US Sun in June that will quickly pass. The war may cool to some degree in the summer 2004, with us not having much of a victory a all. Pluto moves away from US Mars by December, so I think things will dim considerably after that. But the big drama is likely to take place from January through May, and it could be quite fierce.
great article, but despite reality, most americans are still being lied to and believing it and that is very dangerous, still.
bush is (now) painting iraq as afghanistan, that we are rebuilding a torn country that has been oppressed and destroyed by a murderous dictator. people are thinking that iraq was a mess before we got in, and that it wasn't our bombs and invasion that destroyed that country!
it is very important that americans find out the truth, and they still ARE NOT.
we don't want all this saturn to manifest as the limitation on truth in america, because that's what is happening, in reality.
The most recent lie coming out of the duck-lips of bushie as noted by writer, Mark Morford, for SF Gate...
"Plus A Hefty Tip To H. Kissinger, Just For Being You - Mere days before the anniversary of the Sept 11 attacks, shrub said he will seek a whopping $87 billion more from gutted US coffers to fight terrorism in Iraq & Afghanistan & "engage the enemy where he lives," which is, apparently, somewhere where we can't possibly find him because IT'S A GODDAMN INTERCONNECTED GLOBAL SPLINTER NETWORK YOU FREAKIN' MORONS. In an 18-min address bush said, "We are fighting that enemy in Iraq & Afghanistan today so that we do not meet him again on our own streets, in our own cities," with only about ten serious squints to help him make out the big words on the TelePrompTer." http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/n/a/2003/09/07/national1800EDT0515.DTL&nl=fix
(sigh) I love Morford.
Jonathan, that will make a mighty interesting read to commemorate the upcoming 9/11 anniversary.
If you add together the numbers for 11/2/2004 1+1+2+2+0+0+4= 10 which in numerology becomes 1 a new cycle and new begining and 0 with the energy of God/Universe to support this process.
So peace and love be with us all until then.
I enjoyed your article it has been penned with humility.
Britt
Wonderful article, and I think it ties brilliantly to the Guardian piece.
Why does Bush look so hapless and vacant in every picture? It's alarming. Even his eyes and nose are askew, and there's nothing but confusion now. His ignorance mirrors the ignorance of the populace. That's the face America presents to the world: stupid yet mean.
I'll ask again: can anyone explain the meaning of a Mercury retrograde in a chart, or link me to a site that does?
stationary neptune opposes bush's natal pluto--the regenerative plans of first house pluto meet the real world relationships of the seventh house and neptunianly dissolve--- older astrologers used to say that saturn crossing the ascendent leads the native into a new seven year cycle of obscurity-- tony blair's saturn crossed not too many months ago-- soon so to will colin powell's followed in another year and a half or so by mr. bush-- alas for you hillary fans so too will her saturn-- new leaders will have to emerge from both parties--this is the end of a major cycle in civilization--the democrats do not have the backbone to oppose the new money request by bush and so they too are complicit in the coming bankruptcy--they too took enron money--keep on
jonathan - Great article!! it ties in exactly with my article. Meacher is discussing the "elephant in the living room".
Tricia - Mercury retro in a natal chart or in an event chart? Natally it can make a person a little slow in thinking, not stupid, but needing to take it in and digest before speaking forth. My son had a reto Mercury that went direct by progression around age 11. He is now 13. He had asthma as a child (Mercury rules the lungs). He has issues with strabismus and has had three eye surgeries. This mostly resolved. The senses are ruled by Mercury. He is very smart and wise, but a slow reader, and moves slowly through the world (Taurus rising, too).
I have often wondered if there is a correlation between learning disabilites and retro Mercury.
During a retro Mercury period, things often need to be redone before they are done correctly. The worst, imo, is the station. Then everything seems really stuck until Mercury gets moving again. The best example of this is the election of 2000 with Mercury almost exactly stationary, moving direct about 2 days later.
Thank you for the analysis. I have a natal Mercury retrograde, and I'm not a slow reader, but I'm typically laid-back and I would say I often ponder before I speak about something important or serious. Kind of a Silent Bob type! I like to sit and watch a while. I'm a fast walker and cook at lightning speed. But don't ask me to solve a math problem quickly, LOL. Math is my area of learning disability, it's quite pathetic!
Oh, and to be totally frank, I'm not particularly good at timed tests, I can freeze. So that also incorporates the "slow thinking" part. Ponder ponder. :)
Mmmmm, I dunno about some of the assumptions made here about Mercury Rx. I have it natally, of course, else I wouldn't feel the need to jump in here. My mother, god rest her soul, was a great astrologer and she taught that retrogradation for any planet generally meant the energy went in first, then out.
For Mercury specifically, it doesn't necessarily mean slow thinking, as the in and out can happen very fast.
A way I've used the in and out positively is that I've consciously, especially when presenting or teaching, taken a moment, built a pause, for the Divine to speak through me, or a participant in the workshop I'm teaching (same thing)or to simply get their attention before beginning to speak.
Since Mercury is so fast,so "mercurial" it's a good enhancement of its qualities to slow it down sometimes.
But "learning disabilities"? Nah, maybe as a secondary effect of the in and out, but not a primary one.
to figure out the merc r grade thing natally, the first thing i'd look for is the house of course, then the aspects..
a gemini with merc r in an 'important' house, wouldn't get out half as easy as say a cancer with it r in an 'unimportant' one.
I have natal Mercury Rx in Gemini. I'm a slow reader but get straight A's in just about anything, including math & science; I love all subjects. Moon in Virgo helps? I got pneumonia at around 21 yrs. of age; after that I've been extremely healthy. I do get lost in my world of thoughts quite often because my mind is so active, so people who try to get my attention may think I'm absent-minded (maybe I am). They have to call on me a few times till they're able to get my attention. It feels like being awakened from one dimension (the world of thoughts) into another (outer reality). It is quite startling but I'm used to it by now. I like to listen and observe and I love to read. I usually win at card games (not a gambler) and am very good at sports. So I guess mercury Rx is not so bad.
Tricia - The same is true of my son - slow to work through math and slow on tests. Mercury is especially important for him since it disposits everything in his chart. I am so grateful it has at least gone direct by progression. You might check when yours went direct and see if anything significant, of a Mercury like nature, happened around that time.
bbuster - It could depend on ths sign as to the speed of Mercury's energy. My son also has some vision issues which could slow him down, but again, this is Mercury in its rulership of the senses.
This brings to my mind Thomas Jefferson's words.
"The presumption of dictating to an independent nation the form of its government is so arrogant, so atrocious, that indignation as well as moral sentiment enlists all our partialities and prayers in favor of one and our equal execrations against the other.
I do not know, indeed, whether all nations do not owe to one another a bold and open declaration of their sympathies with the one party and their detestation of the conduct of the other.
But farther than this we are not bound to go; and, indeed, for the sake of the world, we ought not to increase the jealousies or draw on ourselves the power of [a] formidable confederacy." 1823
"Wretched, indeed, is the nation in whose affairs foreign powers are once permitted to intermeddle." 1787
"The people wish for peace... They feel no incumbency on them to become the
reformers of the other hemisphere, and to inculcate, with fire and sword, a return to moral order."1811
"We would be guilty of great error in our conduct toward other nations if we endeavored to force liberty on our neighbors in our own form." 1793
--The relationship of one nation with a foreign nation rests on natural law and moral principles as well as on recognized international law.
We owe other nations a respect for their chosen form of government as we expect our own form to be respected, and we have no right to interfere in another people's choice of government or internal policy any more than they have to interfere in ours.
"Not in [my] day, but at no distant one, we may shake a rod over the heads of all which may make the stoutest of them tremble. But I hope our wisdom will grow with our power and teach us that the less we use our power the greater it will be." 1815
--Thomas Jefferson
This is a very interesting conversation. I am enlightened and surprised. I am also leaarning to trust my instincts. Thankyou for enlightenment. What are your thoughts about Sylvia the interpretor of insight seen frequently on the Montel tv talk show?
