"Is This The End of Rico?"
Text With Cartoons and Relevant Links Can Be Viewed At Higher Level Astrology
For anyone, like me, who's a big fan of 1930's genre gangster movies, Edward G. Robinson's immortal performance as brash, vulgar psychopathic killer, Enrico (Rico) Bandello in the cult classic, "Little Caesar" is the epitomy of crime drama performances.
The movie depicts the rapid rise to power and fame of snarling, menacing thug, Rico, and his equally expeditious drop back to the gutter that spawned him, ending with one of the most memorable lines in all filmdom; the now infamous epitaph falling from Little Caesar's enraged lips:
"Mother of Mercy! Is This The End of Rico??"
Taking one look at the upcoming Cancer Ingress Chart, the one similar conclusion is, this HAS to be the end of something significant for this current administration. And, like Rico's demise, it promises to be an equally gut-wrenching, fierce, fall from grace.
An examination of the Mid-Heaven, the sector that gives us a clue to the conditions and circumstances surrounding the President (even if HE doesn't have a clue)....Cancer ruling this domain indicates that the Nation's security and well-being are uppermost in our collective psyche. The prevaling fear and apprehension for most people now is being economically vulnerable and incapable of protecting their current lifestyle and status, all Cancerian issues.
Ruler Moon resides in the Sixth, of work and service. This is the area that gives us the best indication of the true underpinnings of the country. Right away we spot some serious trouble brewing; the Moon is NOT in a happy place.
National security conveys an immediate image of apprehension over a terrorist attack, an elevation of the inane color alert system, or suspicious individuals bent on doing harm to The Republic. But that immediate gut level response would be out of place in this situation. Here, with Moon in the Sixth, the house of labor and employment, the national anxiety and concern relates to our own work and productivity.
The hope for a cheery outcome is not promising with the heavy-handed square to Saturn, in its detriment in Cancer, indicating loss and depression. I think we can count on the unemployment rolls continuing to swell during this Ingress period, with those looking for work facing even more dismal prospects. A good deal of the blame for this sorry state will be put on George W. Bush's door step. Sun and Moon, also in a difficult square aspect, indicate that the people, and the president, will be experiencing a time of strong conflicts between them.
The public perception of Bush doing a "good job" will alter drastically as he will have to take responsibility (Saturn) for the mess done through his ridiculous, and unrealistic, economic policies. This financially austere period, for all but the very rich, or very idealistic Pollyanna's among us, is not warmly received by the people.
Moon in Aries indicates impatience to find a workable solution, outrage over broken promises, and a sense of fuming anger that our deepest concerns aren't being faced and addressed. The square to weakened Saturn, never functional in Cancer for the next two years plus, shows that these conditions are not likely to show much improvement during this time, further fueling the anger of a populace who has always voted their pocket books.
Digging deeper, we see that two very substantial and powerful malefics, Mars and Uranus, are residing in the Ingress Fifth. This is the Eighth, of Death, for the Presidential Tenth. Right away we can surmise that there will be issues of intense change, rebirth and renewal confronting the administration during this quarter. This is further accentuated by the square to the North Node, the point of fate and destiny, which is conjunct the Ingress Eighth House cusp.
Chart for Cancer Ingress
Mars warns of violence through firearms or explosions, and Uranus indicates the possibility of an unforeseen sneak attack. This is fortified by Uranus actually ruling the presidential Eighth House, and Mars ruling the house of open enemies. Or maybe it's time to ponder the admonition that a wise man keeps his enemies close...and his friends even closer.
I'm not normally a big fan of vague shadow factors in a chart, which should, in my opinion, stand on its own merit. But, in this case, the results are pretty startling. Since we've been discussing the impact of key planets in the presidential Eighth, let's first take a look at the Part of Death, at 14 Sagittarius. Notice that it's exactly opposing Mercury and Venus, tightly conjunct in Gemini and placed in the Ingress Eighth, a significant "double wammy", as if we needed one. Further, Venus rules the Eighth House itself, and rules the Ingress Ascendant, pointing to a national death.
The Part of Death opposing Mercury also warrants particularly close scrutiny. Mercury rules the Ingress Ninth, which becomes, through our skipping method, the Twelfth of hidden enemies for the presidential Tenth, showing some kind of seriously clandestine activity. Remember, too, that Sun and Saturn are in this sector, floundering under a square from the Moon. This is further bolstered by the revelation that Mercury also rules the Ingress Twelfth, presenting yet another double wammy. Whatever is to unfold during this time period will be kept closely guarded and investigations will likely prove fruitless. The opposition to Pluto only adds to this suspicion.
I find it very remarkable that the Part of Death is also exactly conjunct Pluto, in the 2001 Inauguration Chart, at 14 Sagittarius. This is also closely conjunct that chart's Eighth House! Seems we're getting all kinds of affirmations that point to the dominant theme of this Ingress.
Want more? How 'bout the Soltice Point for the Mid-heaven, EXACTLY squaring the Mars/Uranus conjunction in the presidential Eighth of Death. You might think that protective Jupiter, sitting in the Tenth, would offer some sheltering insulation, but then Jupiter is usually prominent in charts that have an abundance (Jupiter) of death aspects. Supposedly it denotes an easy transition. But to what do we attribute the square between Jupiter, at 16 Leo, and Neptune's Solstice Point, at 17 Scorpio, if not danger and antagonism from covert (Neptune) situations?
An interesting link between this Ingress chart and the Inaugural chart can be seen with Ingress Jupiter opposing Inaugural Mercury, in Aquarius, with Ingress Neptune's Solstice Point, at 17 Scorpio, conjunct Inaugural Mars. The opposition of this extended T-Square falls across the Inaugural Tenth/Fourth axis, with the square landing in the Seventh of close partners and associates. Clearly a dynamic (Mars) difference of opinion and harsh communication (Mercury) carried to extremes (Jupiter), resulting in more corrupt double-talk and vague assurances (Neptune).
I've mentioned the eye-opening revelation that the Ingress Mid-heaven Solstice Point, at 1 Gemini, squares the diabolical conjunction between Mars and Uranus, in the presidential Eighth. Did I also inform you that this 1 Gemini is the EXACT position of the Inaugural Jupiter?? And that Jupiter rules the Inaugural Eighth? Of Death?
Saturn is, of course, the planet of loss and sorrow. As co-ruler of the Ingress presidential Eighth, it has a profound role here of no small potatoes. The conjunction to the Sun, generally the significator of the ruler or president, shows he is in a debilitated state. The square to the Moon shows W's popularity, and public image (Moon) is slipping. But Inaugural Saturn, at 24 Taurus, is significantly close to a conjunction with the Ingress Eighth. By the way, anyone remember the position of the last total eclipse of May 16? That's right.....24 Scorpio, directly opposing the Inaugural Saturn. Is this coincidence? Or Karma?
Look for some more diversions and displays in the form of jingoistic flag waving, as Neptune, in the Fourth, signifying the homeland and sense of national pride and patriotism, in sesquisquare to the Sun, indicates cheap manipulation of our deepest fears and emotions. Meanwhile, the most vulnerable of our society, the oppressed and powerless, represented by Neptune's retrograde condition, will be the first to feel the harsh impact of a weak economy and an idle work force. Neptune rules the Ingress Sixth, adding to more confusion and fradulent promises. Look for scandals, and deception to pace the long-hot-summer months.
We should also be prepared for more sham twisting of the truth, ala a Jessica Lynch type situation, since the Sixth also rules the military. Befuddlement (Neptune) continues to plague the people as the focus on manufactured heroes coached with mock indignant proclamations, questioning our individual and national patriotism, continue to pour forth. Meanwhile, real people, with real concerns and issues continue to go begging as the gap of irrelevance widens.
Considering I've given some heavy hints that there may be some danger lurking in the murky desolation of our public figures, it might be worthwhile to examine key aspects in Bush's natal chart. The Ingress Ascendant opposing his Mid-heaven indicates a time when his thoughts and priorities are out of sync with the mainstream concerns and issues facing the average American families.
Of course this has always been true, it's just becoming more painfully obvious; overseas as well as here on the homefront. Remember witty wag Ann Richards, who lost her seat as governor of Texas to Junior, years ago describing Daddy Bush as a "silly man....born with a silver foot in his mouth." I can't say that things have improved in a generation.
Maybe we should keep a watchful eye on the entrance of Uranus, hovering around W's own Eighth House. Ingress Mars also begins a timely transit of that same sector. However Mars' normal agility and strength of purpose may fall short over the next several months as it turns retrograde, in Pisces, internalizing those normally assertive, decisive qualities, and frustrating George's own cocksure aims as it bounces around, through direct and then retrograde motion, opposing his Virgo Mars. Bush will be revealed for what he really is. And maybe the American people won't like it when they see that their "Wizard" is just another impotent old man.
Further trouble brewing can be seen by noting that the last eclipse, at 9 Gemini, exactly squares Bush's natal Virgo Mars, which also, by the way, conjuncts the US Uranus. With the eclipse conjunct his natal Eleventh House--using Koch--and squaring Bush's Mars, any goals set for provoking yet another war, on a relatively inconsequential foreign country, with the usual smug belligerence and bullying--just to show his is bigger--is likely to meet with frustrating obstruction.
Pay particular attention to the lunation of August 27th. At 4 Virgo it closely opposes Uranus, in the Ingress Chart, at 3 Pisces. Remember Uranus is the ruler of the Ingress Fifth, designated as the Presidential death Eighth. On 8/27 Mars, at 4 Pisces, is opposing the Lunation at 4 Virgo. Jupiter, always willing to expand on our collective pain, has just entered Virgo and is directly opposing tricky Uranus, retrograde in Pisces. Ah yes...even the best laid plans of mice and men often go astray.
At the beginning of this article I alluded to some aspects that could point to possible danger for the leader of the nation. Not wishing to stand in the way of anyone's destiny (cough, cough) remember the key phrase here is "Leader" . To lllustrate that point, allow me to entertain you with a, hopefully, amusing story.
It seems a woman and her husband consulted a gypsy fortune teller. The gypsy took a look at the woman's hand and frankly remarked, "The father of your four children will die, tomorrow morning, on your front door step". Of course her husband was shocked at the horrifying and dire news.
Sure enough, the next day the milkman's lifeless body was found on the couple's front door!

Now, are we thinking Cheney's quite fragile link to life explodes in a heart attack or Bush's Brain Rove gets caught helplessly in an airplane crash, or he suddenly quits to "spend time with his family"? Oh me, oh my, you wouldn't go that far, would you? Well, all the better to contemplate. I know these two men are the true inner "leaders" telling Jr. what to do and what to think nearly every day. With one (or both?) of them gone, what's to happen to the inept outer leader? One answer: exposure.
We as a people will see the real Monty in all his naked glory. Sally, I'm ALMOST feeling sorry for him, but not quite yet.

To Geneva who asked about the Part of Death in the Ingress chart: This is gonna seem kind of schizophrenic....Geneva from Geneva!
The 14 Sag POD is for the Ingress chart. The method is found by taking the ASC, adding the cusp of the 8th (I use Koch)and then subtracting the positon of the Moon. Actually the exact position for the POD, in this Ingress chart, should be 15 Sag 10, but the program I used to find the Arabic Parts puts it at 14 Sag 55, probably due to a difference in databases. Close enough for our purposes. Of course if you favor different House systems, except Equal, the results will vary.
Don't worry about this falling on your ASC, your POD would be entirely different depending on the cusp of your 8th and your Moon. Hope this gives you some assurance.

What happens to the dummy when the ventriloquist has a heart attack? Everyone sees that he has a wooden head. This is a really cool site. Anything in Dubya's chart that would suggest loss of father? All the references to clandestine activity are very intriguing and oh so GOP. Personally, I hope it's Rove. I don't wish death on anyone, I suppose, but if Rove went down, Dubya would be right where he belongs - in a heap on the floor.

Great as usual and much food for thought. Now having studdied 9/11 from day one, I have no doubt that this adminstration plotted and carried out the planes crashing into the towers.
My best common sense reason is where are the pictures from the security cameras in the airports where the quote quote hijackers got on the planes that hit the towers, the Pentagon and the one that crashed in Penn. Your common sense tells you that they have the security cameras and if they where there, then they would have been on TV 24/7. The only picture we saw was of Atta but this picture was taken in another city.
So what do we see on 9/11 that connects to what you have said. Saturn was at 14 Gemini 45 squaring Virgo at 14/15 Sag. We also have an eclispe on May 4, 2004 at 14 Virgo 42. On June 10 we have Saturn at 13 Cancer 13. 2004, I find that when the Sun moves off a connection to a natal planet that endings happen. On that day the Sun will move from a conjunction of the Sun and Bush natal Uranus.
I keep hoping that it takes the form of impeachment, instead of martydoom. Also presidents leave office when Neptune is close to an H 8 to Leo 16. Neptune is at 15 Aquarius. The widest orb of any of the president to H 8 of 16 Leo is Lincoln which is 6 to 7 orb.
Keeping fingers crossed that impeachment is coming. I have noticed on the web, more and more are coming out stronger and stronger that 9/11 was a plot of the adminstration. Impeachment fodder for sure. It is said that the republicans turned on Nixon so that in the impeachment that he would not be asked about the assination of Kennedy. So it may go along these lines also.

Looking more at the ingress chart, I also noticed that the Sun and Saturn is in the 9th house of law and the cusp is square to Neptune (lies). So I get the hunch that this summer is the bginning of the impeachment and the end may come June of 2004.
Jupiter is also square at 16 Leo Mars at 16 scopio and Saturn at 16 Tarus on the elcipse chart of Aug 11, 1999, which I think is still in effect.
Also on June 2004 chart is Pluto on Bush S. Node and Chiron at 25 Capricorn is square Bush Saturn. The moon will square US Neptune that day. Mercury and Jupiter is sq. Bush Mars. And Saturn squares hi and US Sun.
At best I would say he is going to have a bad hair days from the ingress for the next year.

it is important that we don't muddy the facts as to be perceived by the so-called masses as conspiracy theorists, and not lucid, clear-eyed observers to what's really going on, which is still, bad enough.
Does anyone have any thoughts on the amount of money Bush and the GOP are raising for his re-election? And the possibility that, with the economy failing and so many people out-of-work, there could be a backlash to the $200 million purse they're expected to have? Just curious if that's something that could be seen astrologically.

Personally, I don't want any of them to die, I hope they live to see their administration and reputations crumble in the storms of scandal and impeachment. Political and social death are much more important. The Rethugs have to be rebuked for the past decade of crap they've given liberals, and for their winning-is-everything-and-the-only-thing mentality that caused them to steal the 2000 election. Their standard bearers, the Bushes, Cheney, Wolfowitz, Rumsfeld, have to pay for what they've done, and I want to watch it all happen.
I don't know about 9/11 conspiracies---I do suspect, though, that they were incredibly negligent when it happened, unprepared, in spite of all their crowing about how Rethugs are so great on national security. They ignored multiple warnings, from Colleen Rowley, from the Egyptian president who had heard of a plot, etc. Their total incompetence in the face of this catastrophe---failing even to shoot down one of the planes!---is what they're desperate to hide. That's why they try to blame Clinton---never mind that when he went after Osama and even Saddam in the 90s, congressional Rethugs screamed how dare he, and barely allowed it----, and that's why they use the satanic services of Mr. Rove to spin this event in their favor, and even go so far as to hold their convention in NYC near the anniversary. They have no shame. But they know that if the full investigation were allowed to happen, and all the information revealed, they wouldn't be the heroes. They're not the villains, IMO, I'm not that suspicious yet, although I have issues with the Carlyle connection, etc. There's high level corruption, but I think it's about attempts to save their own asses, not to create a national tragedy for their purposes. No, but they did *use* a national tragedy for their purposes, and they don't want us to know how they could have prevented it. Because then the whole house of cards would come tumbling down. This is hundreds of times bigger than Watergate, potentially, and they've been geniuses about protecting themselves and distorting the truth.
When you learn all the facts that show what really happened on 9/11, instead of it clarifies things and gets rid of the muddy water. You just have to read the facts and use logic and common sense. And it becomes completely clear.
Conspiracy means that 2 or more people do something in secracy. So every time you have a surprize birthday party it is a conspiracy. Theory in the scientific sense is that you have had an idea or been told something, and you have tested it and found it true.
It is not some wild crazy thing. It is finding as close as one can to the truth that 2 or more people have gotten together to do something in secret.
I have a couple of big questions about 9/11 myself.
I am not what happens in real life but on tv the air traffic controllers and pilots contact each other on a frequent basis. What I don't understand is--is why th air traffic controller's didn't know something was wron earlier. Furthermore the air traffic controllers should have noticed that the four planes were off course and if they tried to contact the planes, they would have gotten no answer or an answer from someone other than the pilots of the planes. The air traffic controllers should have then contacted the Feds. So what happened??????????

The proof is all there - you just have to connect the dots. Always ask yourself: "Who benefits?" Bush & co. are heavily invested in the energy and military defence contracting companies. These people make money in their sleep when we are at war, and especially when there's an oil field waiting at the end of the battle. They knew.
Okay so for what it's worth, my "theory" is that they knew something was coming. They knew Bush's pResidency was in the crapper - approval ratings in the 40's. They knew the public trusted Repugs more on matters of military and such. And they allowed it to move forward - as a diversion, as a pivot point to stress safety. as a means of stirring fear in the hearts of the average Joe and Jane.
As much as I despise the administration, I don't believe they planned it or were prepared for the enormity of what happened. And I'd like to.

Geneva, your son's article is certainly thought provoking, and it looks like he has a lot of fun doing it too. Hindu/Vedic astrology seems very complex, but I've seen some Hindu astrologers reduce it to a science. They don't even consult books. They just draw these strange diagrams on paper after getting your birth information, and do the interpretation right there, impromptu. It's as if their heads were computers, and they do all their calculations mentally. Maybe they've done it so many times that it becomes second nature, but it is always fascinating to watch them work. I myself have never done a comparison between western and Hindu astrology, so I can't say which system produces the most accurate results. Maybe someone who practises both will be able to answer that question.

I don't know much about Vedic, but his article is fascinating. I'll just bet there is someone willing to do GWB in for their own personal purposes. It will be interesting to see how this plays itself out. However, I sincerely hope that he will not be martyred.

It could also mean the death of the "role of president"... which is fradulant anyway. And there could be several individuals in the "administration" working with others against bush. Having "bad heart" cheney or "loony" rummie in charge of the nation would not be any improvement whatsoever. I don't think the Universe is THAT much of a jokester... going from terribly bad to worse!
I do think there's a coup brewing, however--a giant "Sting" operation so-to-speak--against bushie n' his crew of rapacious child-murdering plutocrats, & that it's been brewing for a long time... waiting for the right moment. How intriguing that the Wall Street Journal editorial page chose the morning of the Movokeon.com online preference poll to publish an endorsement of Howard Dean. It isn't a straightforward endorsement, of course, because Dean's politics are anathema to the Journal's right-wing editors. But it is certainly a plug, from the headline "Dean of the Democrats" to the flattering descriptions of the Vermonter as "the most consequential Democrat challenging President Bush" -- "articulate and smart" -- and as a candidate "touching something deep in the current Democratic psyche."
That perception might be more plausible if Dean had risen above 5 percent in scientific surveys of Democratic voters. (In all of the most recent national polls, he has languished near the bottom with Al Sharpton and John Edwards.) So the Journal's desire to elevate Dean may reflect a degree of wishful thinking on their part, although Dean has attracted a corps of serious, passionately committed activists that other candidates cannot help but envy.
Correctly or not, the Journal editors assume that a Dean candidacy -- with its tendency to "indulge the outraged inner liberal rather than compete for the political center" -- would represent disaster for the Democrats. That's why they welcome and even encourage that possibility, with a slightly ironic echo of Goldwater's doomed glory: "A first or second in the Iowa caucuses would give [Dean] momentum going into New Hampshire, where he and Mr. Kerry would vie to knock each other out. Stranger things have happened and they might again if Democrats next year decide they want a choice, and not an echo."

Rather, if I myself am any indication of the American psyche - we are not there yet - as much as I am ready for the next presidential race - Bush boy's efforts are still crippling people's attention...I have also been thinking how Bush has not delivered on any original platforms of his first race for numero zero and I have faith that many democratic candidates are skirting that issue of military spending (keeping it the same? There is no way - they have reserved the option as democrats more so than any republican has to cut back) because they do not plan to deliver either - things are not what they seem but I am still sure that as the Republican party thus far is not offering any contenders against Bush which leaves the dems open field to kick him out - 'for political reasons'. I just read Kevin's article - things really could get worse before they get better...I read a link from one of the comments posted on Astroworld to a western astrological interprestation of GW's possible demise this fall and really the conclusions were similar that something will happen to Bush (not Cheney) as indicated by his chart and close family...the only thing not predicted was who would endanger the President...Vedic astrology does seem quite probably a more finely tuned method of reading the universe but I do not think (or should I say feel as I am absolutely a novice)western astrology is totally off...I should have a vedic chart done...to compare.

First let me explain that I am only an astrology hobiest. And only research in mundane subjects. Can't read a chart worth a darn. So I have spent lots of time looking at presidents charts that have left office before their term was done.
I think it is significant also that I had been wanting to look at the eclispes compared to the charts of their deaths and only got the eclispes for 1800 a few days ago. I had just taken a quick look at them when I read GC brillient artical. I have spent hours and hours looking for the date she gave. I am sure it has not taken her the best part of the last couple of years, and there in lies the difference between a hobbiest and pro. Every criterior that I have developed for the date that becomes a probability that the president will leave has been meet with her date.
I took the Aug 27 date and did move it a few hours and come up with Aug 28 at noon GMT. When I did the chart, it turned out that US Neptune was on the ascendent. So I stuck with that chart. And it looks like a winner all around.
What I did with eclispes was first I did all the midpoints of the death charts and then compared the eclisps to the Sun/Moon midpoint. What I found was that on 6 out of 7 of these chart midpoints was that an eclispe did make some kind of aspect to these Sun/Moon midpoints and many of them had an eclipse to to make an aspect to the Natal Sun/Moon midpoints. Only Harrison did not have this aspect to the death chart but did to his Natal chart. I could have had bad data on this. In fact there is a 4 degree trian so the data would only be off a few hours to make the aspect. All others had a 1 degree or less orb. or 1 plus 30 min at best. My death charts where based in the place of death. There fore I left Bush at a GMT till we find out where he will be.
I also compared that Aug. 28 chart to many of his family and administration people. These are very significant. I think with a bit of work, I may find out who. I think at this point Chaney will go down with him. This puts Hestard as the president, maybe.
I pick up a lot of court or Bush will be in a foreign place. Perhaps the court means the plotters will be tried.
I also pick up a lot of military (Pentagon) and diffinately a woman is big in this.
I could almost pick out who will be involved out of the charts that I have.
Out of all the charts I do have, only Trent Lott and Hillary Clinton have charts that looks like the things that happen on Aug 28 is to their advantage. I have about 10 or 15 charts that I am using of other people. Both Bush wife and Chaney have transiting Neptune sq their Natal Suns. The daughters have the mid point of Mars/Uranus transiting to Natal Sun. Etc. etc.
Since GC and son are so definitive about what they have found. I think that probably this is going to end in everything coming out and he will be revealed as a murderer along with those plotting against him.
But do remember, I can't read a chart worth a darn.

I agree. Things are as clear as mud right now as to who will rule. At the moment I think Kerry, Gore and Hillary Clinton have the best charts for 2004, but in such a huge, volatile situation it's not so obvious to me. As a matter of fact, I'm pretty sure I am going to be surprised in some ways many times over as all this progresses. Each day offers new outrages for my normal expectations.
I come here because there is foresight and actual brilliance from the astrologers and those who offer comments. It's one of the few truly interesting and inspiring places to come to each day. I'm greatful, especially in these times. Peace and blessings to all of you.

Nothing but lip service
In recent months, President Bush and the Republican-controlled Congress have missed no opportunity to heap richly deserved praise on the military. But talk is cheap — and getting cheaper by the day, judging from the nickel-and-dime treatment the troops are getting lately.
For example, the White House griped that various pay-and-benefits incentives added to the 2004 defense budget by Congress are wasteful and unnecessary — including a modest proposal to double the $6,000 gratuity paid to families of troops who die on active duty. This comes at a time when Americans continue to die in Iraq at a rate of about one a day.
Similarly, the administration announced that on Oct. 1 it wants to roll back recent modest increases in monthly imminent-danger pay (from $225 to $150) and family-separation allowance (from $250 to $100) for troops getting shot at in combat zones.
Then there’s military tax relief — or the lack thereof. As Bush and Republican leaders in Congress preach the mantra of tax cuts, they can’t seem to find time to make progress on minor tax provisions that would be a boon to military homeowners, reservists who travel long distances for training and parents deployed to combat zones, among others.

Jean, you can definitely read a chart, as far as I can see. Terrific analysis, and it really makes me think. I have also been thinking about 9/11, and wondering if perhaps I'm afraid to believe the worst; my gut tells me something much more sinister happened than my brain apparently has been willing to dwell on. I believe in the insights of astrology, and what this tells me is that there is a greater truth behind these events, there's a much wider canvas, and I've been afraid to look too closely. I agree with bbuster that at the very *least*, they knew something was coming, and they let it happen, because they could, and because they felt the end justified the means.

Saddam loyalists ally with Islamists

A shadowy group of Saddam Hussein loyalists calling itself al Awda, meaning “the Return,” is forming an alliance with Islamist militants linked to Al Qaeda for a full-scale uprising against the US-led occupation in mid-July.
The information comes from leaflets circulating in Baghdad, as well as a series of extended interviews with a former official in Saddam’s security services who held the rank of brigadier general.
Al Awda is aiming for a spectacular attack and uprising on or about July 17 to mark the anniversary of the Ba’athist revolution in 1968, the former general said.
The Islamists have indicated they are willing to join forces to battle the Americans, even though they dislike Saddam and his secular Ba’ath Party ideology.
A leaflet by Jaish Mohammed, one of two Islamist groups operating in Iraq, said it was willing to work with the Ba’athists despite Saddam’s repression of Islamic fundamentalism. The leaflet, obtained by The Washington Times, makes a direct appeal for former intelligence officers, security personnel, Fedayeen Saddam members, Republican Guard troops and Ba’ath Party members to join forces.
“The first act will be spectacular, possibly smashing an oil refinery near Baghdad,” said the former general, who has been urged by al Awda to join the leadership of the planned anti-coalition front.

I have been following this discussion with much interest and would like to make a couple comments:
Pat- your excerpt from the Army Times needs clarification. Although I am no fan of this administration, facts are still facts:

First, Iraq and Afghanistan are designated combat zones, so all military service members who spend more than a couple days each month in country are exempt from ALL federal income taxes (still have to pay FICA/SSA taxes) for that month up to the highest enlisted wages (CSM at max pay scale). Some of the military's pay is already tax-exempt by design, anyway. Many states, which have income tax systems, offer similar exemptions. Of course, officers (mostly Lieutenant Colonels and above) might have to pay some taxes on the salary that exceeds that limit, but they have a long way to go before their AGI exceeds the taxable threshold. This exemption is generous, and speaking from experience of having enjoyed said benefits, appropriate.
However, the Army Times is speaking from a lobbyist-journal point of view, asking for more than has ever been offered before - under Democrats or Republicans. Sure, if you're eliminating taxes for the wealthiest, it is fair to ask for some morsels for the troops in hazardous duty areas. But many of these tax exemptions are unprecedented and hard to justify. For example, reservists have been able to deduct travel expenses to training for quite some time: "...minor tax provisions that would be a boon to military homeowners, reservists who travel long distances for training...." All unreimbursed mileage, lodging, and meals are fully deductible as employee business expenses. As for the capital gains exemption, "...easing residency rules for service members to qualify for capital-gains exemptions when selling a home " is pretty extreme and seems unrelated to the ongoing "wars" in Iraq and against terrorism. Moreover, selling one's home while deployed is the last thing that most servicemembers need to worry about, and tax exemptions which may encourage this are insane. Of course, the pay raise caps for privates and second lieutenants are totally unrelated to war, and are unacceptable and insulting. The U.S. military is firmly anchored in fairness and honor, and what is good for higher ranks is good for everyone.
Serving one's country is an honor which deserves fair remuneration; it should not be a free-ride nor profit-making enterprise. Serving in a hazardous duty area should not be a major financial reward nor incentive to support or promote conflict.
Jean- I thought your additions to Geneva's analysis were very good. Your comment "My fear is someone worse getting in office" caused me some concern, however. Although it is hard to imagine who could be worse (Hastert doesn't seem so threatening), I began to wonder if you looked at the chart for Congress's agent Smith - Tom Delay? Does Hastert appear to be in the same "mortal" danger? And does Tom "no-show" deLay(ed) look poised to assume center stage?
