The War Begins

With the colossal might of the world’s only superpower at its fingertips, the Bush administration seems drunk on its grandiose schemes and sense of omnipotence. The bludgeoning of the United Nations and the disdain for world opinion can lead to only one conclusion: this administration will allow nothing to interfere with its neoconservative goal of global hegemony - neither international law, nor treaties, nor the concerns and protestations of allies.
As has been true from the dawn of time, those who seek unrestricted power have invariably come crashing down from the heights. Such self-delusional attempts to move beyond the healthy boundaries of human communal interests inevitably meet up with a rude awakening. The Greek myth of Icarus and his father, Daedalus, tells the tale succinctly. These two, in attempting to fly too close to the sun, went hurtling into the ocean as their waxen wings melted from the heat of the solar presence.
And so it will be with the Bush Cabal, though unfortunately, we are along for the ride.
The planetary picture for the duration of this presidential term suggests increasing turmoil and difficulties for the administration. Mr. Bush will continue to take risks based on a false sense of divine authorization for his grandiose and ill-conceived schemes. Eventually, Pluto crossing his South Node in 2004 will lay bare, through crisis, the reckless gambles and the shallow ideology that have fueled Bush's endeavors. His overwhelming hubris will be shot down by the increasing pressure of the two-year passage of Saturn through Cancer, beginning in June 2003. Unfortunately, the cult-like nature of this administration – a kind of group-think that shares a messianic sense of destiny that justifies harsh, thoughtless, and aggressive means to fulfill majestic and deluded goals – is insular and self-perpetuating. Only a series of massive failures will stop it – economic, military, and political. With the invasion of Iraq, the unfolding of their demise has begun.
The chart for Gulf War II is drawn for when the first bombs were dropped, on March 20, 2003, at 5:33 AM in Baghdad. The most significant feature in this chart is the Pluto conjunction with the Midheaven opposing the Saturn conjunction with the Nadir, suggestive of an overwhelming power taking full and brutal control of the situation, polarized by the crushing sorrow and suffering at its roots – the Iraqi people. By using the solar arc to progress the meridian axis, we find that the Nadir (or IC) moves to the precise conjunction of Saturn exactly during the notorious “shock and awe” devastation of Friday, March 21 (through approximately 8:30 PM EST). This movement of the IC serves to trigger a time of great suffering for the Iraqi people, as well as the deep feelings of shame and sorrow for many Americans who are witnessing this war.
Another particularly brutal stage of the war is likely from mid-day Sunday, March 23, through late on Monday, March 24, EST. During this timeframe, the Moon will cross the Pluto/Midheaven conjunction and oppose Saturn (3/23), and the War chart Ascendant will move into an exact square with Pluto (3/23) and then Saturn (3/24). The anguish and distress of the Iraqi people will likely again be at the forefront.
The most significant period of military engagement would seem to span from March 20 through March 30. March 27 through 30 is likely to bring a few days of considerable violence and a final decisive victory of some kind. The transiting Sun will square Mars in the War chart, and transiting Mars will be semisquare to natal Uranus. This first, active stage of the war continues until about April 4, after which the more military focus may subside. However, potentially huge difficulties still loom on the horizon.
The Sun’s position in the War chart is 29 Pisces, the very last degree of the zodiac. The 29th degree of any sign brings with it a certain sense of sorrow and loss. The last degree of the entire zodiac brings as well a very strong sense of the end of a cycle and of things no longer quite right, but without the comfort and hope of having yet begun the next phase. In addition, the Sun position in the Gulf War II chart is Void of Course, meaning it is in a no man’s land where it will make no further aspects until it gets to the next zodiacal cycle, beginning in Aries. The VOC Sun position here suggests that the thrust of war could lead to unexpected and unwanted results. It is as if the goal (Sun) of the chart is no longer anchored in an organized and logical reality. There is an inherent weakness or flaw in the entire venture that can lead to a weakened, confusing, or disjointed outcome.
In addition, the 29-degree Pisces Sun squares the Pluto /Saturn opposition mentioned above. Thus, the goals of the war (the Sun) are continually in a tension relationship with the US military aggression and assumption of power (Pluto/MC), as well as with the suffering of the people (Saturn/IC). As a result of this natal T-square, enormous problems are likely to develop, especially during May, when transiting Saturn squares natal Mercury and the natal Sun of the War chart. With Leo ruling the 6th house cusp, we may see all kinds of complications and difficulties relating to health, sanitation, food and other daily living issues. We may also see the limited ability (Saturn) of American power to control the situation (the Sun) despite considerable power struggles (Sun square Pluto). Moreover, beginning on March 22, transiting Pluto is going retrograde and once again moving towards the Moon in the Iraqi chart. This also suggests a period of great struggle, fear, and affliction for the Iraqi people from now through most of May.
The Mercury station quincunx Pluto from April 21 through May 1, 2003, will be triggering inflammatory and difficult progressions or transits in Bush’s chart, Kim Jong Il’s chart, North Korea’s chart, and the Iraqi chart, as well as setting off the Pluto/Midheaven configuration in the Gulf War chart. This planetary station is likely to unleash a crisis period for Bush on two fronts: North Korea and Iraq. Whereas the circumstances surrounding North Korea may well be of a bellicose and confrontational nature, the Iraqi situation is more likely to be a chaotic unfolding of unforeseen and very troubling events that take Bush further from his stated goals. Though Mr. Bush may see a slight jump in his popularity and approval polls over the next couple of weeks, by mid-April, difficulties will abound as his arrogant and misbegotten foreign policies begin to bear their toxic fruit.
A second thank you (already read on DU). Articles as yours are needed more at times like these because they serve to inform and then to reassure us that Bush will be stopped by the gods, since obviously we mere mortals aren't capable of stopping him

I was struck, while reading thru Nancy and Sally's articles last night, how much in agreement they were on Bush's immediate future. I keep wanting to look for some Venusian or Jupiter influence that will bide Bush over this shit-hits-the-fan period he is heading into, but it's not there. If I were to summarize, from reading these alongside Sutton: support for Bush will begin to trail off in mid-April, culmiating in his becoming very unpopular by the end of Summer, with another Martial event happening in September, that culminates with reversing the tables on Bush.

JB - I think the upward blip from the war will pass by mid-April. I think he gets some help in that regard from Uranus square Inaugural Jupiter. Also this progressed Venus opposite his MC is very exact right now. That is a big boost.
But Jupiter remains around his Leo stellium til, iirc, July 18. It crosses his Venus for a week around then, up to the 18th. So we can expect another blip of some kind around then. It is after that that things start to go downhill, from what I can see. This likely war from mid-July through mid-August, and possibly into October, will not go well. There is a big crisis that may be the culmination of the martial energies in the summer, by October. That is when Pluto returns to 19 Sag for the last time (November) and Saturn makes its first crossing (station) very near the US Sun (October). Chiron also will be stationary opposite the US Sun and Bush's Sun in September and October, suggesting the bullying tactics that piss everyone off will be in full throttle and causing big problems. The fall could bring a big crisis for Bushie Boy.
I just read in the Washington Post that the war actually began on Wednesday 1 PM Washington time. Don't know if it makes any difference, but just thought you should know. :-)

My first post here but I've read your wonderful articles for the past 3 months and marvelled at your intuition.
I am a sidereal astrologer and if you look at Bush's PCLR (precession corrected lunar return for anyone else reading this comment) for March you'll notice Jupiter on the ascendant to the minute.
I think he'll be successful for the next month at least.
Also, IMHO Saddaam was born at 5:40 am on 4/28/1937 and that puts Jupiter on the MC and Pluto on the IC. Bush's Saturn falls on Saddaam's Pluto/IC and so he's going to oppress him at home, so to speak.

Hello, all, I really enjoy this site and peruse it frequently. Although I am a beginning, wannabe amateur astrologer, I find the explanations and support articles very informative and insightful.
I also want to offer a non-astrological point-of-view, as a military reserve officer who spent many years on active duty, as well as an 10-year resident of Texas - most recently, 8 years in the capital of Austin.
Of the military personnel, active and reserve, I have come into contact with since GWB assumed office, most are republican and fans of the Bush administration. Although many in the military are very intelligent, most prefer to keep things as simple and straightforward as possible - and Bush seems to meet that need for them. They have no time for moral grey areas, and they have little say over what missions they are ordered to execute. Thus, the black-and-white old-fashioned whoop-ass talk from the administration has strong appeal to most of them. Also, they perceive the Bush administration as strong, and most everyone wants a strong, decisive commander-in-chief.
I mention this because I regret and resent that so many hide behind the military in defense of neofascist politics and ideology. I am sick to my stomach of born-again patriots who ran from Vietnam or other conflicts, avoided all military service, but invoke patriotism and support for the military as reasons to browbeat, stifle, and even persecute those who dissent. If my 19 years of service were not for the right to criticize, oppose, and even protest peacefully, then my service has been in vain.
Finally, I want to comment on the ongoing information campaign being waged in the U.S. and abroad. Since the early 1990s, the military has focused considerable effort and resources into information operations. The ongoing lopsidedness of media coverage of the Bush Administration and the war in Iraq is probably attributable, to some degree, to the media's willing complicity in a coordinated information campaign to shape the global information environment, shape support for the U.S. political and military objectives, and influence the American public. Fortunately, the U.S. has little sway over foreign media sources (yet), and Europeans and citizens of many other countries are somewhat sensitive to propaganda. We, in the U.S., don't seem to be so sophisticated. Sadly, this powerful weapon must be controlled and carefully scrutinized, and used strictly for clear military objectives, not to serve the political and economic interests of the few. However, from reading this site, it seems that impending economic woes will force us to face reality and peer behind the curtain at the little man speaking through the loudspeaker of Oz.

Lahiri - Where did you get 4:28 for Saddam? I have been using 4:05 AM, which is close. It has the same houses you mention. A good point about Bush's Saturn on Saddam's Jupiter/Pluto. Bush will certainly clip Saddam's wings.
JC - Thanks for your comments about the military. I am hopeful that the military may eventually give up on Bush just because he has misled (lied) so much. They were promised that Iraq would be easy and that they would walk in like heroes, liberating the land. It isn't happening. They are seen as aggressors and conquerors, and the Iraqis are not happy to see them. This and the strong resistance has been a shock.
There are varying times given for the start of the war. I am sticking with the first bombing of Bagdad when they tried to take out Saddam. But even with the earlier charts, there is still the Saturn/ Pluto opposition square the Sun and Mercury. Thus there is still resistance (Saturn) to the power of the conquerer (Pluto), and great resistance to the basic fulfillment of the goals of the war (both square the Sun). There is also the VOC Sun from early Tuesday through late Thursday, impacting any of the possible charts. So most of the predictions I made will hold, though some may be off by a couple of days.
The Chiron transit opposite Bush's and the country's Sun, which will make its station August through early November, simultaneous to Saturn, should be a real comedown for Bush. I think this will burst a big hole in the arrogant and struting attitude he presents to the world. The transit essentially brings painful experiences for a dominating, arrogant, and narcissistic attiude (all qualites of the Sun gone bad). Currently Chiron is square his Jupiter (3/22 to 4/30). This also brings lessons due to grandiosity and overoptimism. I think we are seeing that right now in how the war is unfolding.

I rectified Saddaam's birth time using known events such as his assumption of power (17 July 1979 - North Node conj. Saturn in sidereal Leo), his sense of uniqueness - Uranus conj. exalted Sun in the ascendant, etc, etc. As I said, I use 5:38 am in Tikrit, Iraq and it has worked quite well. Incidentally, I am almost certain he has a REALLY good astrologer working with him.
Secondly, the next PCLR for Saddaam on April 19 has Jupiter conjunction his ascendant to the minute !!!!...and Sun on the M/C. So if he survives until then he is going to have his day.
Lastly, IMHO GWB cannot be written off -he has had Saturn near his ascendant from birth and I've not seen a luckier chart than his - so to think that Saturn's arrival on his ascendant will sink him is a bit too easy.
What CAN sink him is his health, and that is where he may be vulnerable over the next year because his PCSR (precession corrected solar return) for the next year has Neptune precisely on the ascendant.

I am not sure who said and has been saying for a long time that the Iraqi people will endure a tremendous amount of suffering resulting from this war. I think it was you Nancy, and it is now becoming apparent in the south of Iraq, and the more the war is prolonged, the greater the suffering will be since Bush and Saddam are both stubborn, and not apt to give in easily. Now that the U.S. forces are encountering unexpected resistance from the Iraqi forces, I think they have abandonded all their previous intentions to limit civilian casualties. There has been a lot of aerial bombardment in the south, and punishing strikes on the Republican Guards stationed in and around Baghdad. They have abandoned their precison cruise missiles, and are now dropping huge bombs from the B52 bombers on the Republican Guards that ring the area around Baghdad city, and out of the view of cameras, so the public (both Western and Arab) cannot see the horror of it. You have to admire the spirit of the Iraqi people, after years of war, and 12 years of sanctions; now this night and day bombardment that they must live with, and yet their spirits have not been broken (at least not on the surface). I think the rebuilding of Iraq is going to be a long and arduous task.
Lahiri, you are probably very good at what you do, but your analysis of Bush depresses the heck out of me. The idea that Bush is so lucky that he'll servive the next year and a half leaves me speechless and heartbroken. Maybe I don't want to deal with the lucky realities of his chart, but goodness, at a time when many of us are feeling so despondent about the reckless behavior of this man, do you have so sound so positive about his outlook? Can't you wait until we're all feeling a bit chipper?

Whether or not people agree with you, I've always believed this forum to be one where you could offer your insights regardless and not be cowed into being "anti-Bush" or "pro-Bush". It's all about astrology! Don't feel you have to be in agreement with others on the sight. Having other ideas based on your knowledge and understanding of astrology helps those of us who are learning to see things differently. So, post as you wish. :-)

Not to worry. I really think Bush is doomed, but the real drop hits from August 2004 through the election. He will never get back to where he was post 9/11, with that Jupiter station. Never.
I am not just basing it on Saturn to his Sun (10/03 to 6/04). That is only a part of it. But that transit is also to the US Sun, so the country will not be faring well at all. Remember the US chart has a natal Sun Saturn square, so Saturn to the Sun transits do not bode well. The last time we had that transit, Nixon resigned. The time before was during WWII when the economy was in the sewer and the war wasn't going well.
In the summer of 2004, Bush's progressed Venus peaks in its conjunction with progressed Jupiter. As they begin to wane in this conjunction, both of them enter into the beginning of a square with his natal Saturn. During the election months - September through November - there is a Saturn station conjunct Bush's Saturn and square his MC. Saturn will also be stationary on the IC of the Inaugural chart. I really can't imagine him winning with those configurations.
The winner always (for the last three elections anyway) has a very strong Venus going on - attraction, beloved by thepeople, etc. Bush had numerous Venus progressions for the last election. All three of the last elections the winner has had a Venus Sun progressed hard aspect. Bush has nothing like that next next time, but instead he has prog Venus square Saturn. The best chart by far for a winner is Al Gore. Alas.
Lahiri, there is no need to apologize. My response was meant to share how despondent I felt that Mr. Bush would survive his reckless behavior, not to quiet your writings. For certainly, too much of quieting one's speech is becoming all too frequent, and I don't ever want to participate in silencing an opinion that I don't share. All information is useful. I am not an astrologer, so I come to this site for relief and understanding, and being a Piscean, I met with information, your analysis, that I was unwilling to face. That is not your issue, it is mine. Again, no need to apologize, your analysis is what it is, and I don't know enough to say which astrologer is more accurate than another. That conclusion will take time and distance. I apologize if my comment read other that what is was meant to communicate---my disappointment.
Janet, Lahiri, the change has to come from the people, if not Bush, then there is Cheney, there are many more players supporting the face Bush presents, and represents, which isn't the face most Americans want to see. The change must come from the People. I can think of those pinning their hopes on the Presidential Curse manifesting. Tonight the mother of a Marine said her sons last words to her were 'Mom, we have to do this, we have to'. Tears streamed down my face, I too am a Mother of a Marine, he served in Gulf I, and I cried, because in my heart I don't believe we had to do this, this way.
I am amazed at the negativism I read here about President Bush and the Iraqi War. We all know that George W. wants to vindicate his father, we all know that oil is a key issue in the war, and we all know that although Osama and Saddam are not tied, they are both terrorists capable of gruesome astrocities against us Americans.
Astrology is not an exact science and it is so obvious that most of you are injecting your own political opinions on the situation. I don't particularly like radicalism in either extreme, but the anti-war people in this country and abroad are just making fools of themselves. The post-9/11 comradery and patriotism has quickly given way to partisan attacks from people who resent Bush for winning the election and being so popular. Granted, Bush has a style not suited to everyone, but let me ask you, how is it any worse than Bill Clinton? Politics are a tough business.
I believe that astrological and other forces have a profound influence on our feelings, attitudes and sometimes our actions; but free will, determination, character and circumstance can oversome almost any predilection. Right now what we need is support for our leader, our country and our cause... and most of all, faith in our higher power to see things through.
America is certainly free and anyone can say whatever they want, but I've heard all the Bush-bashing I care for, and I think it's a shame that you can't get with the program. If you look hard enough you can find (or fabricate) scandal and conspiracy anywhere. Rampant skepticism is just as bad as blind obedience... the truth is what we are all after, so I suggest that some of you open your eyes and get off your liberal soapbox. And be careful, you might just get what you wish for...
Mark: You agree that vindication and oil are the keys to our pre-emptive invasion, and that Osama and Saddam are not tied, yet you still think the government is correct in what they are doing? If you think these astrologers are injecting their political opinions in what they read in the stars, then what do YOU read in the stars? It is somewhat tough to find a right-wing astrologer, mainly because most astrologers truly want to help the “whole” of humanity and not just a few rich fat cats. I see nothing but partisan attacks and most, but not all, are from the right, not the left. Concerning Bill Clinton, I would take one Bill Clinton to a thousand Bush’s, and I’m not exaggerating. Clinton was diplomatic. Bush has ruined our reputation in the eyes of the rest of the world that may take literally years to bring back, that is, if we can bump him out of office in 2004 we may have a chance to save face. I CARE about the rest of the world. I care about the U.N. I care about the Kyoto treaty. So did Clinton. What was so wrong with years and years of prosperity and peace? If Clinton could run again, he would beat Bush so bad that Jr. wouldn’t know what hit him.
What we need are more anti-war rallies, more dissent against this government’s antics. He is NOT my leader . . . not the way he is leading now. Faith in our higher power? The higher power here is the PEOPLE of the United States and I am counting on them to come through in seeing this administration for what it is and making sure they get out and vote in 2004. Bush deserves the Bush-bashing he’s getting right now. And there will be more where that came from. He created this mess and we have to lie in it. I wish he just got a blow job and lied about it. I did not start off skeptic, Bush has done it TO me. I want this administration to shape up to be what they COULD have been . . . thinking and acting in the betterment of mankind, not they’re own back pockets – this is what I wish for. If that comes true, then the better for everyone.

Also... what about the Scorpionic birthday for the U.S.? Some, though very few, claim that the real birthday for the US is November 1777, when the first colonies were formed, rather than July 4 1776 which was a declaration to break away from England. Any thoughts?
Larry, there is an argument to be made for the 1777 chart. In part many feel that the 1776 chart was a war chart, and the colonies fought for several years. The actual government did not really form until 1789 with the first Congress and George Washington's inauguration which was 04.30.1789 at 12:42pm in New York. My hunch is this is the chart of the US although the colonists elected a President (John Hanson)Inaugurated on 11-5-1781 in York, Penn. But who remembers or cares about John Hanson, he's not even mentioned in the History books, so was the Union even taken that seriously before 1789
Like Larry I would like to know more about Tony Blairs part in this, why doesn't he see that the George Bush administration is leading him on a road to nowhere? and they are only paying lip service to his agenda. This is an "intelligent man" married to a Human Rights lawyer what can he be thinking of? Would love to hear your views on this.
The answer to your question about Tony Blair I think is power and money. Tony was born Mary 6, 1953, 6:10am in Edinburg, Scotland. Tony has a Tarus Sun in the 12th house square his Moon in the 9th. His Jupiter at at 29 Taurus and Mars at 3 degrees Pisces (in it's fall) all in the 12th house. Tony Blair is a great orator, but not necessairly a great man. As far as that is concerned I am not sure how many "great men" we've had that were actually for the people, most were for themselves and the people went along, Bush and Blair aren't much different. I don't think Tony Blair is going to make it politically, but I am quite sure he has a sweetheart deal for him at the Carlyle Group just as John Major landed when he lost the election to Blair.

Interpeting the war chart as an event chart for Iraq might yield the following observations,this is not my speciality but I will do the best I can.
I take the first to be for Iraq and the seventh to be for the US, attacking enemy.If you do the chart for Wash DC then the first would be the US and the seventh would be Iraq, the enemy attacked.I have not done the chart for that location but will shortly.
On any account for this chart the enemy here is seen as not being all powerful as a debilitated Mercury is the ruler of the seventh. Mercury is weak becuase it is is in the sign of its fall, is in the last three degrees of of its sign is combust the sun and is square Saturn.Saturn as it applies to the exact square of Mercury the significater of its attacking enemy indicates increasing difficulties for the enemy and a weakening position of the attacker.
Further more the midheaven is conjunct the Iraq Saturn That has the destructive Pluto on it. This might be bad save that it is at the midpoint of Venus and Moon.Not ony that but the moon venus conjunction in the Iraq chart is around 20 degres Gemini so both moon and venus in this chart are trine the moon and venus i nthe Iraqw chart. This indicates the goverment, the tenth, has the support of the people (moon) as well as its affection (venus) at this time as a result of this attack and though damge to the homeland will be great with Saturn in the fourth opposite Pluto the people will make a great group effort to sruvive what ever comes.
Help will come from foreign countries with the strong mars in the tenth in capricorn ruling the ninth. Mars in it exhaltion sign indicates the goverment is organized prepared to fight and strong in tis leadership.
If it were not for some of the weakensses of the ascendent in this chart Iraq would win this war but they can not do it via the weak Sun and Mercury in the first by themselves. Jupiter the ruler of the first and depositer of Sun Mercury may give them help via its positon in the fifth.As Jupiter also rules much of the ninth and the tenth they may not loose the war as a result of foreign intervention.
Something else of interest is the fact that the solar arc Pluto of the Sibly chart for the US has reached almost to 14 virgo and sits on the seventh of this chart. I believe this indicates that the US, the attacking enemy,is itself being attacked visa its own past as indicated by this position of Pluto which also squares the ascendent in the sibly chart
